Freedom school enrollment up 28 percent By Lynn L. Martin Last May, the Freedom public schools ended the year with 71 students. At this point in the 2013-2014 school year, the district has 91 students, an increase of 28 percent. The principal, Brett Hill, said they also have students in all grades. Last year there was no students in eighth grade. Anger at Northwestern Wearing his hat as athletic director, Hill expressed disbelief and anger that the Freedom schools had been booted from the Northwestern Oklahoma State Unviersity (NWOSU) high school basketball tournament this coming season. The NWOSU tournament games were an important part of the Freedom basketball schedule, he said. Hill said, “The decision was made by Joe Phillips, who runs the tournament, and was done without my knowledge, as I was never approached about being taken out of the tournament. We were simply taken out of it!” He said, “I wrote a letter to the NWOSU athletic director and President Janet Cunningham about this debacle. To her credit, Dr. Cunningham did call me back and apologize for this misunderstanding and lack of oversight. Nonetheless, we are out of the tournament. So to replace these missed games, we’ve added a couple with Felt, Okla..” After the board meeting was adjourned, this reporter asked Hill as to “why” Freedom was dropped. Most of the board members chimed-in, “That’s what we would like to know.” Some speculated that they were presuming Freedom might not have enough play-

ers to field a team. Hill responded to that remark by saying “Heck, we’ve had more numbers on our girls team than almost any other squad.” Starting a Three-Year-Old Program Under the agenda item, “New Business,” Superintendent Danny McCuiston asked the board to approve a half-day three-year-old program to be combined with the existing four-yearold classes. He said he had received a couple of requests and the state does pay more for that age group. Board member Concha Herrera said she had been at a school where a three-year-old program worked quite well and it made their entry into the four-year program much easier. However, board member Shane Morris was strongly against the idea saying the Freedom schools had no business of getting into the baby-sitting business. The motion was passed 4-1. Alpha Plus Learning Systems At the last board meeting, the superintendent made a strong plea for the board to purchase participation in the Alpha Plus Learning System, which they approved. This week, they had their first onsite visit from Shannon East, who conducted an in-service workshop to help the faculty and students get going with the program. McCuiston said the school would see dramatic improvements in student performance. He said, “This is a tough, tough track. It is a lot of work but it is well worth it.” He said, “The old way of teaching of starting at chapter one of a text book and working toward the end-

of-chapter test is gone. I’m against purchasing any more text books, and instead want to get our teaching resources from world-wide sources. It won’t cost any more money, and it might cost less.” He added, “Current textbooks in publication usually are poor guides for teaching the curriculum needed for students to be successful on standardized tests and those out-of-date books do not follow PASS or Common Core objectives well.” He warned the board that they will see on the encumbrance list requests for more money for programs like Alpha Plus. He also explained, “I want to prepare you that the lessons your children complete and bring home may take on a different look from what has been traditional.” Hill reminded the board a fund-raising golf tournament sponsored by the Freedom Boosters will be held at the Coldwater, Kan., golf course on Sept. 21. Jan Eden said she thought the participation fee was $40 per person.

Lynn Says

Tips to avoid computer contamination By Lynn L. Martin One of the frequent problems we have at the newspaper and photo studio is when our basic computer software configuration is changed by outside firms in a sneaky way. All of a sudden the user discovers his search engine has been changed or there’s a new home page on the computer. Also, you may find a new anti-virus or anti-malware service installed on your computer. This is usually caused by “tagalong” software. Almost once a day, every computer we operate will display a notice that reads, “An update is ready for your computer. Click here to install.” I actually prefer that my employees say “yes” and install these updates. I realize that’s why larger firms have IT specialists whose job it is to supervise all such installations and the employee is never to say “yes” to update. With about 30 computers between our two sites, and with updates coming almost daily, I do not have time to run around and supervise the updates. So updating by employee is a risk I’m willing to take. What’s interesting is most of these updates are for programs we really need and want from “honorable” firms. We need Adobe Flash, we need Adobe Acrobat, we need to update our anti-virus and anti-malware software. And we need Java. Other than Microsoft, these firms are all guilty of trying to trick us into “tag-along” software. The Microsoft Windows updates are well behaved. Same with Open Office. Watch Out for the Checkmarks Some of the offending “tag-along” participants (like Adobe) place a check mark in a box that assumes you want to

install whatever is tagging along. You need to watch for and UNCHECK those offers. Others are a little more ethical like AVG. They have the check boxes there, but they are unchecked. Attached to this column are a couple of screen-shots illustrating the problem. I do not recommend ignoring all offers of upgrades. If you are frightened to say “yes” to any of them, at least agree to the Microsoft ones that often improve the security of your computer. Do, however, be careful and MAKE SURE the Microsoft update is really from Micro-

soft. I occasionally see junk software offers disguised as if they are from Microsoft. The ones that irritate me most are those that change my search engine from Google to some puny search engine like “Ask” (which usually supplies sponsored results only) or “MyStart,” which is a malware disaster waiting to happen. Microsoft has succumbed to a bit of trickery regarding their “Bing” search engine. Bing is actually very good, but they are struggling to get people to try it over the king, Google.

Afterward, they opened a bid for the resurfacing of a half-mile stretch of road that was left out of the original plan. Venture Corporation located in Great Bend, Kan., sent the accepted bid with a price of $115,875.50. County Commissioner Chad Roach said the work should be completed by the first of November. After the bid acceptance, the board reviewed and approved a five-year plan for county road and bridge improvement. Roach said the list of bridges and roads rarely remains the same for the entire five years. “Every year, due to need or a certain bridge falling in, we rotate See Alfalfa Page 26

Woman charged with theft of prescription drugs By Marione Martin When Carmen residents discovered some prescription medications missing, they told a deputy they were reluctant to believe a friend had taken them. According to documents on file, on July 20 the Alfalfa County Sheriff’s Office received a report from Kendi Wooten that she and her husband, Rhett Wooten, had some pills stolen from inside their residence on E Street in Carmen. She said that both of them had medical procedures performed and had pain medications prescribed. Alfalfa County Deputy Sheriff Blake Trekell first made contact with Kendi Wooten by phone. She told him about a cousin and a friend who had been in her house the previous day. She said the cousin was not alone except to use the bathroom. She said the only person who was in her residence unattended was her friend Jennifer Sabedra. She told Trekell she felt terrible accusing or assuming that Sabedra would do this to them but too many things didn’t add up, and she was the only person they felt it could have been. Trekell arranged to meet with the Wootens at their home at 9 p.m. that evening. He said the residence was clean and well organized. Rhett Wooten showed him their medicine cabinet and explained what pills had been taken. The home had a bathroom with a bedroom next to it and another bathroom located inside the bedroom. Rhett said four or five Endocet

pills had been taken. He also said approximately 20 hydrocodone pills had been taken with two left in the bottle. Both Endocet and hydrocodone are Schedule II narcotics. Rhett also added there was a Valium bottle misplaced in the bathroom that wasn’t where it belongs. The bottle of hydrocodone was in the bedroom in a small tray on top of the dresser. Rhett said the bottle was half full the day prior when he had it. He said the bottles of Valium and Endocet were stored in the medicine cabinet in the bathroom off the bedroom. He said they don’t keep any meds in the main bathroom. Trekell asked the Wootens why they suspected Sabedra. Kendi said she and Sabedra and their children went to a rummage sale in Carmen while her husband was gone for a church function in Cleo Springs. She said Sabedra had purchased some larger items and loaded them into her car. She said she was going to the Wootens’ house to organize the items in her car and asked Kendi to take her kids in her vehicle. Kendi said she left the front door unlocked when she left for the sale a few blocks away. She said she never leaves her door unlocked, which is why the pills had to be taken by one of the two people invited in the house that day. Kendi said when she arrived home, she found Sabedra inside her house and estimated that she would have been there approximately 15 minutes. She again

stated she hated to think her friend would do such a thing, but she couldn’t think of anywhere else the pills would go. Trekell talked to the cousin who said the only time she was alone at the Wootens’ residence was when she used the bathroom. Trekell contacted Sabedra and asked to talk about the time she spent in Carmen. She said she was unable to meet him but wanted to know what was going on. Trekell explained, and Sabedra said she didn’t know what to say. Trekell asked if she was ever inside the house alone, and she claimed she wasn’t. She said Kendi was right behind her when they pulled up to the house. Trekell told her that Kendi said she didn’t arrive until 15 minutes later. Sabedra said it didn’t seem that long. When Trekell asked what she did in the house, she said she went in and used the bathroom. He asked which bathroom she used, and she said she used the one in the bedroom. He asked why she used that one instead of the one she would have walked by on the way to the bedroom, and she said she was looking for tweezers. He asked if she was in any of the Wootens’ drawers or cabinets and she said she had to look around and find feminine hygiene products. Trekell asked if she had taken any of the pills and she adamantly stated that she didn’t. A few days later Trekell contacted Kendi Wooten to see if Sabedra had spoken to her since the interview. Kendi said Sabedra had contacted her about the incident several times worrying about what was being done. Jennifer Sabedra, 37, has been charged with felony larceny of CDS (controlled dangerous substance).

them,” he stated. A total of 14 road crossing permits totaling $16,000 were approved by the commissioners. District 1 had eight permits totaling $13,000; District 2 had five permits at $2,250; District 3 had one permit submitted at a total of $750.

Driftwood Christian Church celebrates 50th anniversary Sunday By Yvonne Miller Sunday, Sept. 1, the congregation of the Driftwood Christian Church (DCC) plans a full day of celebration to commemorate their 50th anniversary. All are welcome to join in the worship and fun. Current minister Max Boothby said the theme of the day is “Glancing at

the Past, Focusing on the Future.” “We are celebrating the past 50 years and dedicating ourselves to another 50 years,” he said. The congregation began in a small, white wooden church in Driftwood led by the first minister, Ed Schmidt, from September 1963 to October 1964. Hiram Cassel next served from Decem-

ber 1964 to April 1968. From April 1968 to May 1969, Albin Covington served followed by Ed McQueen from June 1969 to April 1972. Founding member Sam Schurter recalls they first built an addition onto the little white church before building the new and existing sanctuary in 1975. He said that to his recollection most all the church construction occurred in the 1970s. Sunday Begins with Meeting Past Ministers, Ends with Variety Show and Ice Cream Sunday morning all are invited to start out at the church for a day of celebration as follows: 9:15 a.m. – Continental breakfast and fellowship 9:45 a.m. – Reconnect with former ministers and family See Driftwood Page 40
