Kiowa’s New Hospital CEO Grismer is “invested” in helping facility succeed By Yvonne Miller Already familiar with the Kiowa. Kansas, community before accepting the CEO position at the Kiowa District Hospital (KDH), Margaret Grismer said, “I’m already invested. I want this facility to succeed.” Grismer began her new role Nov. 12. She retired as a captain (0-6) from a 24-

year military career July 1, of which the last 15 were spent in administration with the U.S. Public Health Service. That is a corps of medical personnel who serve in a federal agency and Grismer fell into that category as a nurse. In 2000, Grismer earned a master of science in nursing in the adult nurse practitioner program from the University of Colorado Health Science Center in Denver, Colorado. She first earned her bachelor of science in nursing in nursing in 1991 at Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota. That Minnesota accent is still evident in her speech as Grismer said she still “claims Minnesota as home.” A graduate of El Dorado, Kansas, high school, she has strong ties to Kiowa as her parents Buddy and Donna Williams reside here as do her sisters Tamara and Aimee. She and her husband of 22 years, Allan Grismer, have three sons. The two oldest, Zac and Ryan, spent many of their summers working for farmers in the Kiowa area. Collegeage Zac is at Oklahoma City University in Edmond and Ryan is at Missouri State. Their youngest son, Brent, is in eighth grade and will become a South Barber student. “He loves football and basketball,” his mom said. Of the decision to move their family to Kiowa, Grismer said, “It is time for a life change,” now that she retired from the military of which her first five years were in the Navy. When she first became a nurse, Grismer served at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland. Next she spent 10 years in Denver, then seven years
in Oklahoma before the last three in Springfield, Missouri. She was a director of nurses and then administrator which she said “suits me well.” “With my medical knowledge, I understand the mindset of practitioners,” Grismer said. She’s anxious to work with Kiowa’s established physician Dr. Paul Wilhelm and Christie Leal, D.O.,who will start practicing at KDH in January. “We are all excited to make a team for the future,” Grismer said. Her focus in these first weeks of joining the hospital is “to win the hearts and minds of the staff and develop a team.” At the first of 2015 she wants to develop strategic plans and a timeline. “We’ve got to learn how to maximize our status as a critical access hospital in relation to the Affordable Care Act,” Grismer said. “We’ve got to be on the cutting edge of learning – the whole nation is learning.” She is aware of the many challenges she faces as CEO with a small hospital in these times with financial struggles, government regulations, Medicare reimbursements and so much more. Looking around her office, Grismer said, “It is a blessing to work in this beautiful new facility.” She plans to make the new hospital a reflection of the people and countryside of southern Barber County. She said photographs of cattle, grain, the people, the students of South Barber will “really personalize the hospital for the community.” “This is a great opportunity,” Grismer said of joining KDH. “It helps to know the community and who you are serving.”

By Stacy Sanborn Nine minutes is all it took to almost clear the agenda at Monday night’s Waynoka School Board meeting. Board President Rick George and members Marinda Zook, Donnie Miller and Clint Olson were enough to determine a quorum without the presence of the other member Andy Ferguson. The four, with the help of Superintendent Loren Tackett and Principal Michael Meriwether, breezed through the agenda items, collectively approving the consent agenda (members learned collections through November are up), the schedule for 2015 board meetings, and the adoption of an amendment to Section 125 of the school insurance plan. The amendment will allow faculty to opt out of schoolprovided insurance if the individual wants to pursue other options. In the superintendent’s report, Tackett said there has been informal talk of interest in the old gym on the property downtown. He said he will get with the city attorney to request a formal discussion. During his report, he also stated that a workman’s compensation reimbursement check for $3,683 was received and will go toward the school’s $22,000 yearly premium. Principal Michael Meriwether got his turn to speak and praised the students for the success of their recent play. He said it was a lot of fun for
everyone and this year held the highest record of tickets sold. The night seemed to be coming to a close with only two agenda items left to vote on. Those items, voting to approve or not approve the addition of a junior high girls slow pitch softball team and junior high boys baseball team to the junior high athletic schedule, garnered a lot of attention. The question? Would adding the junior high softball and baseball teams to the spring athletic schedule affect participation in the school’s renowned track program? Three of the four members present didn’t think so. Sole opposition came from Clint Olson, who gave a passionate oration on the school’s history and future with the track program. “To be honest with you, ever since I read the agenda, I have been extremely ill just because I don’t know, and I have checked, but Waynoka School Systems has never caused junior high athletic programs to compete with each other. We have never had kids make those choices. That’s the big thing.” He went on to explain, “My position as a board member at Waynoka schools is not to assume ‘Okay, I’m here and this is what I want to do.’ It is in my view to assume that I am here as an extension of those before me and with those after me in mind. “I want to know institutional knowledge on what’s happened prior
to me, however long it goes to set precedent, what’s happening right now and what’s best for the kids and what’s anticipated in the future and when I see a decision like this that sets a strong precedent of competition, which we have never had before at Waynoka schools, of two programs competing, not at the high school level, but at the developmental level in junior high, to me that’s a big deal. Because when you turn the corner there, you are setting the stage for one to go by the wayside just simply by the popularity of it.” Board President George asked, “If the kids are interested in it, why should we say no?” Olson pointed out that the track program has a tremendous amount of history and legacy and success behind it. The superintendent told members that only about three kids had been participating in track the past few years. Olson replied, “The facility isn’t there, making it difficult to participate. I am just not a believer in kicking something while it’s down,” and expressed concern over long term consequences. When asking others if they see his point, Olson was met with several no’s. Tackett said that if there is no junior high baseball and softball, there should be no high school baseball and softball, citing there is absolutely no reason to have a high school team with no junior high team in place because the kids simply cannot be competitive without the early start at the junior high level. He told Olson, “I don’t understand how you diminish the athletic ability, the try, the want to, the pride of a baseball player and of a track player. I don’t understand that.” George stated that if there was enough interest to field a baseball team, then the school should offer it. Zook pointed out that she and Minutes Clerk Lori Adair used to be on the state track team and still played softball. She said, “To me, you have to make an effort. If kids want to do both, can’t we let them do both?” Trying to prove a point, but veering

Cherokee man charged with child sexual abuse By Marione Martin A Cherokee man has been charged with child sexual abuse in Alfalfa County. On Nov. 25, Ernesto Ray Loya, 43, was charged with child sexual abuse and lewd molestation, both felonies. A warrant has been issued for his arrest. On Sept. 30 District Attorney’s Investigator Steve Tanio informed Cherokee Police Chief Andrew Minson of the allegations against Loya. Tanio said the Department of Human Services (DHS) had received information on Sept. 23 that Loya had molested his minor son in the family home in Cherokee. Tanio said that on Oct. 1 he interviewed the minor son of Loya. The boy said while his mother and younger brother were running errands, Loya dragged him to an upstairs bedroom, blindfolded him and tied him on the bed after removing his clothes. He said Loya inserted a hard object in his rectum. The child said this stopped when the father heard the front door open. He said Loya
threatened him with “something bad” if he told his mother. Tanio said the child also told him about his father using his cellphone to show him a video clip of a man and woman having sex. Also on Oct. 1, Tanio interviewed the mother, Kimberly Loya. She said she took her two sons and left her home after observing her older son had been slapped in the face twice by Ernesto Loya. She said she had obtained a protective order for herself and her sons against Loya. On Oct. 1, Minson obtained a search warrant for the Loya residence, outbuildings and property at 414 E. Seventh St. in Cherokee. The warrant was served on Oct. 2 at 6:30 a.m. by Chief Minson, Officer Matt Jones and Deputy Dillin Munhollan. Loya cooperated with the search including showing officers where to find his cellphone in his pickup. Also seized were numerous adult sexually explicit magazines from the pickup bed, a camper shell in the
driveway, and the closet of the master bedroom. Two of the magazines had “family” in the titles. They also found a desktop computer in the living room. In the master bedroom, a blue soft cloth resembling a rope was found beside the bed near a stack of teddy bears. Under the bears, officers found a sex toy. On Oct. 3, Alfalfa County Sheriff Rick Wallace interviewed Kimberly Loya who said her son had come to her and told her of sexual actions with his father. She said she was aware of pornography in the house. She said Loya used to use the computer to look up porn on the Internet but the computer had not been working for the last year. Wallace said Mrs. Loya told him her son’s behavior had become more withdrawn about six months ago. She attributed this to a change in his medications. Court records show that Kimberly Dawn Loya filed for divorce against Ernesto Loya on Oct. 14.

Kraft family ‘Celebrate Life’ benefit dinner, concert at Baker’s Barn in Alva Friday
Tickets available at Holders, Alva Vision, from Rotarians and rsstewart12@yahoo.com; Silent auction items; Country artist Nathan Wade performs as will some local vocalists By Yvonne Miller A sudden illness this summer and fall took the life of Kevin Kraft, who was well known in this area as a singing, cooking, hardworking cowboy. Area folks who enjoy a grilled steak or salmon at the Vintage House at Burlington probably best knew Kraft as the master griller who created those mouthwatering selections. A Burlington native who farmed and ranched many years, Kraft and his wife Lori also owned Vintage House and moved to Alva in 2010 where they had opened the Vintage Inn Bed and Breakfast. Kraft’s death left a huge void for his family and friends. So now friends want to celebrate life and help out Lori Kraft and her family as she continues to operate her business. Alva woman Rachel Stewart heads up the event. Read her inspiration toward the end of the article. The benefit dinner, concert and silent auction event is this Friday, Dec. 5, 6:30 p.m., at the Greg Baker Barn north of Alva. The address is 30029 County Road 440. How appropriate that there would be a concert featuring country artist
Nathan Wade. A cowboy, Kraft was known for his love of playing guitar and singing throughout his life. A special treat for Vintage House diners was when the Krafts serenaded them in the restaurant. “I had been contacted by an original country artist from Nebraska and turns out Kevin was an original country artist. Many received a copy of his CD at his funeral service. Once I heard Kevin’s music and then Nathan Wade’s music, it just clicked,” Stewart said. She’ll even sing a duet with Wade at the benefit, which will certainly be a crowd pleaser. The reigning Miss Northwestern, Chelsay Adams, will be at the event and will perform a vocal solo that she and Kevin used to sing together. Stewart said a $50 ticket admits one to the BBQ dinner, concert and auction. Stewart said “Smoking Aces” caters the BBQ meal of ribs, pork loin and cornish hen with all of the sides and dessert which she said will be “awesome.” Silent auction items (at press time) include: a cowboy sculpture donated by Eagle Chief Studios out of Tahlequah; two donated pieces by local

photographer Andrew Collin Lauffer; gift baskets; jewelry and various items donated by generous merchants and individuals. Wade will also have merchandise to sell and a portion of the funds will be donated to the family. Stewart said, “Wade is excited to come to Alva and looks forward to sharing his music for an awesome cause!” Wade has opened for entertainers Eric Church, Joe Nichols, Jason Boland, Cody Canada, Granger Smith/Earl Dibbles, Jr. and more. Rachel Stewart Is Paying it Forward Stewart told of her inspiration to organize this benefit. She said, “Thirteen years ago (which would actually be today, Dec. 3) a life event changed the lives of me, Carter and Stephanie forever. This community rallied around and came directly to our aid. A benefit auction was created for college funds for Carter and Stephanie. Those funds have been growing for 13 years and will enable them to meet all the financial demands of higher education and allow them to graduate debt free. I am eternally grateful to all of those who organized, donated and supported that auction. I knew at some point I would pay it forward. God placed the Kraft family on my heart and things just fell into place. “The Alva Rotary Club got word of what I was planning and immediately jumped on board. I am so blessed by this club and their willingness to help. There is no way I could do it on my own,” Stewart said. “I met with a few of the members and we set a date. Once that date was set, the ball started rolling. A huge thank you goes to our amazing sponsors! The kindness, generosity and support of this community and surrounding communities is so amazing and greatly appreciated.” Tickets are available at Holder Drug; Alva Vision; from any Alva Rotary member; or Stewart at rsstewart12@yahoo.com.

Alva man charged with domestic assault By Marione Martin An Alva man was arrested after his girlfriend told police he choked and hit her. Dominique Jean Shillito, 25, has been charged with domestic assault and battery by strangulation, a felony, in Alfalfa County. According to court records, on Nov. 21 at 8:33 p.m. Alfalfa County Undersheriff Glenn Oister was dispatched to the 300 block of North Grand in Cherokee. There he spoke with Rockland Carter who said Lane Fry called and told him her boyfriend beat her up. He said he drove to their residence at 55351 Cleveland Road, Carmen, where he picked up Fry and took her back to his residence. Oister talked to Fry who was sitting on the couch. She said her boyfriend, Shillito, had beaten her up. She said she had returned from a restaurant with food, and Shillito asked why it took
her more than 15 minutes. She said there was loud music playing, and she complained about it. Fry said when she walked by him, Shillito grabbed her from behind and began strangling her. When he finally stopped, she went outside to talk to the neighbors. When she went back to the apartment, they continued to argue. She said Shillito put her phone in his back pocket, grabbed her from behind and started strangling her again. Fry said when she was released, she went to the neighbors and started knocking. She said he punched her in the face with his right fist, and she fell straight back. Oister observed wide red marks all the way around Fry’s neck and that her nose and mouth were red and puffy with blood in her nose and a cut on her upper lip. When he detected the odor of alcohol coming from her breath, he asked her about it. She said
she had three glasses of vodka. She said Shillito had been drinking rum and was intoxicated. Since Fry said she was having difficulty breathing, Oister contacted dispatch to call EMS. Before Fry was transported, her father arrived and said his daughter could stay with him for the night after release from the hospital. Oister and Sheriff Rick Wallace went to the home of Shillito’s mother where they found him sleeping in a bedroom. He was arrested, handcuffed and taken to the Alfalfa County Sheriff’s Department. In a post Miranda rights interview, Shillito told the officers he had a fight with Fry and threw her on the bed but he never choked or punched her. He was booked into the county jail. Pictures were taken of his right hand which was described as having swollen knuckles and three open wounds.
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Prosecutors have charged an 18-year-old Oklahoma man with rape in a case that sparked a protest at Norman High
School. Cleveland County prosecutors filed two counts of first-degree rape Tuesday against Tristen Kole Killman-Hardin. Police say he is accused of assaulting a 16-year-old girl who was intoxicated and incapable of giving consent. District Attorney Greg Mashburn confirmed Tuesday that police were investigating rape allegations by at
least two other girls and that additional charges are "an open possibility." Students claimed school administrators mishandled subsequent bullying of the alleged victim and walked out of school Nov. 24 in protest. Killman-Hardin was booked into the Cleveland County jail Tuesday afternoon on $250,000 bond. Court records do not indicate whether he has an attorney.

The Festival of Trees By Anthony B. Lovelace
Page 41
Just about every home in the United States has one; some homes are decorated with more than one. They come in many shapes and sizes. Some can only be used one year, while others can be used for many years. Today they even come in different colors. You can pick one up just about anywhere, department store, grocery store, or even a convenience store. Some make treks into the country side and cut down their own. I am talking about a Christmas tree. Just what exactly does the Christmas tree symbolize? I could bore you with a long drawn out philosophical dissertation on the history of the Christmas tree, but I would rather spend this time together to take a trip down memory lane, rousing up fond family memories of years past. For this writer that is what elevates the Christmas tree above mediocrity. Memories flood into my mind of the excitement and thrill of decorating the tree after Thanksgiving. I am sure many of you have the same memories of time spent decorating the Christmas tree with your family. It all started with the trip to the tree lot when we would pick out the perfect tree. The aroma of the tree would fill the house and provide the perfect setting for the holiday season. First order of business was getting the tree to stand up perfectly straight in those wonderful metal tree stands, was that not the ultimate lesson in patience! Next came the popcorn strands, made by stringing popcorn with needle and thread, never straying far from the one kernel for the tree; a hand full of kernels for me rule, with three kids this particular rule provided my mother plenty of time in the kitchen shaking that the aluminum popcorn shaker over the stove. She could have given Mr. Redenbacher a tip or two on popcorn. The lights were next, winding strands of lights around the tree so as not to get the strands to close together, then you hung the ornaments made at school and shining glass bulbs of every color. You can't forget the silver and gold tinsel. No Christmas tree was complete until the tinsel was on. Wasn't tinsel an unforgettable invention? After Christmas we would spend the next eleven months cleaning gold and silver tinsel out of the shag carpet and the vacuum cleaner. This same tradition that you and I shared at home can also be found at the Cherokee Strip Museum's Festival of Trees. Each year the rooms of the museum are decorated with Christmas Trees by individuals and families, many are carrying on a family tradition at the museum. When you visit the museum during the Festival of Trees you will see Christmas trees decorated in many different themes by families and individuals from Alva. Buddy Pettit's family and employees decorated their tree in ornaments made from carpet and tile in honor of Mr. Pettit. Emma Lu Lightfoot and Eldena Plain decorated a tree in ornaments that are handmade. The decorating of trees at the museum spans generations, Tena Martin and her four grandkids spent time this holiday season together decorating a tree. With the Christmas season getting in full swing; be sure to take some time with your family and enjoy an afternoon visiting the Cherokee Strip Museum and enjoy the tradition of the Festival of the Trees.
THIS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5TH, DURING THE ALVA ART WALK, THE FESTIVAL OF TREES WILL HOST A SPECIAL GUEST.
Tree decorated by Emma Lou Lightfoot and Eldena Plain
Santa Claus will be at the museum from 5-8 p.m. so that he can take pictures with the children.

Man, woman to be tried in girl's abduction, rape TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A judge found sufficient evidence Tuesday to try a man and woman in the abduction and rape of an 8-year-old girl in Topeka. Jeremy Lindsey, 28, and Michelle Harris, 23, both of Topeka, were bound over for trial after a preliminary hearing in Shawnee County District Court. The couple, who live together and are the parents of a young boy, pleaded not guilty, The Topeka Capital-Journal (http://bit. ly/1CCBpqF) reports. The girl vanished for about six hours in September, setting off a search that ended when the child was found walking along a road about 2 miles from her home. The Associated Press has a policy of not
identifying sexual assault victims. Lindsey is scheduled to go on trial starting March 9 on 10 charges, including rape, aggravated kidnapping and unlawful administration of a substance to the child. Harris will be tried on charges of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated child endangerment. District Court Judge Evelyn Wilson determined the prosecution submitted insufficient evidence to pursue a rape charge against Harris. Wilson ruled that Harris' involvement in the crime started when she picked up Lindsey and the girl from a wooded area and ended when she dropped them off at an abandoned house. Harris' attorney, Mike Warner, argued
that Harris' "failure to be curious" about transporting Lindsey with an unknown girl doesn't amount to intent and was borne out of fear. Witnesses for the prosecution testified that after the girl was abducted from her home, she was taken to three separate locations — twice in the trunk of a car. Detectives and other witnesses testified the girl was drugged, bound with phone cords and gagged with her leggings before setting herself free. Lindsey's attorney, David McDonald, said his client wished to make a statement. Wilson said he could do so only by testifying, which, after conferring with his attorney, Lindsey declined.
Hershey explores removal of corn syrup By Candice Choi NEW YORK (AP) — Hershey is looking at replacing the high-fructose corn syrup in some of its products with sugar. Will Papa, chief research and development officer at The Hershey Co., told The Associated Press the company uses a mix of sugar and high-fructose corn syrup in its products but that it is "moving more toward sugar." "We take into account what consumers want. And consumers are telling us between the two, they prefer sugar," Papa said. A switch to sugar would make Hershey a high-profile example of the move away from high-fructose corn syrup in the food industry. Many people say they avoid it because it has gained a bad reputation for fueling weight gain and diabetes, though health experts says there's not enough evidence to conclude it's any worse than regular sugar. In an emailed statement, Hershey said its work on "exploring" the replacement of high-fructose corn syrup "is just under way" and that it did not have a timeframe on when it might be complete. A representative for Hershey, Jeff Beckman, cited Almond Joy, Fifth Avenue, Take 5 and York as examples of
products that use corn syrup. He said classic Hershey bars are made with sugar. "Our aim is to be transparent with our consumers about the ingredients we use in our products. Once we have more information to share, we will be back in touch," Hershey said in its statement. Other products that have changed from high-fructose corn syrup to sugar include Gatorade drinks and Yoplait yogurt. As for health, the American Medical Association has said there's not enough evidence to specifically restrict the use of corn syrup. The Center for Science in the Public Interest, which advocates for food safety, has also said that there's no evidence that the sweetener is any worse nutritionally than sugar. The Corn Refiners Association, an industry group, has been pushing back at the negative perceptions about high-fructose corn syrup, which is generally cheaper than sugar. In 2010, the association submitted an application to the Food and Drug Administration to have its sweetener renamed "corn sugar" on nutrition labels. The request was denied. The association said it has also commissioned market-research firms Mintel and Nielsen to study perceptions of
sweeteners and shared the results online. For instance, the group notes in media materials that "67% of consumers agree that moderation is more important than specific sweetener types." John Bode, president of the Corn Refiners Association, said in an interview that the number of companies changing from corn syrup to sugar has slowed. Still, he said consumption of high-fructose corn syrup has declined more than other sugars. Part of the reason is that people are cutting back on soda, which he said accounts for a majority of the market for high-fructose corn syrup. In some cases, he noted that companies have switched back from sugar to high-fructose corn syrup after failing to see a notable sales spike. Hunt's Tomato Ketchup switched to sugar in 2010, but then switched back to high-fructose corn syrup in 2012. Lanie Friedman, a spokeswoman for ConAgra Foods, said demand for the version without high-fructose corn syrup wasn't "as strong as expected." She noted the company still offers a 100% Natural line that uses sugar. Among the members of the Corn Refiners Association are agribusiness companies Archer Daniels Midland, Cargill and Tate & Lyle.

Waynoka
off course a bit, Olson spoke about Waynoka school’s ranking on ad valorem values and how amazed he was at just how high Waynoka ranked in comparison with other northwest Oklahoma schools (ninth out of 48). He said they are blessed and have no plan. George countered back that there are many different factors in the rankings, like the square mileage of the districts. Waynoka is the second largest school district square mileage-wise and with all the oil and gas play, it is no wonder they are ranked so high. He said schools in Enid and Kingfisher are ranked high because of the assets they have and the state aid they receive. He said Olson proved nothing with the ad valorem illustration. Olson tried to sum it up by saying the ad valorem is positive and wants to get something long term to address needs, like additional classrooms. Others agreed that more classrooms were needed but discussion of that matter was not on the agenda.
Tackett tried steering the conversation back to the matters at hand when one of the two spectators, JT Holt, spoke up. He essentially agreed with the superintendent, saying that there is no use in having high school teams if no junior high teams are in place. He said this decision directly affects him, as he has a child wanting to play softball, and if the school isn’t going to offer it at the junior high level, he wants to know now. He closed by saying that he thinks kids should be able to make a choice for track or softball or baseball. Before voting, Miller looked at Olson and said, “The more we can offer kids to do, the better off we’ll be. I don’t think this will take away from the kids that want to play track.” Adding junior high girls slow pitch softball and junior high boys baseball to the athletic schedule was approved by George, Miller and Zook. Olson voted no on both. No new business was addressed and the meeting adjourned.
