Goodno comes home as Kiowa Hospital CFO

By Yvonne Miller No tricks, just treats as Janell Goodno began her position as Chief Financial Officer of the Kiowa District Hospital Halloween day.

The treats she brings to Kiowa’s Hospital are seven-and-a-half years experience as CFO of the Stafford County Hospital. It’s also a Critical Access Hospital like Kiowa. CA (typically rural) hospitals receive better Medicare reimbursements.

“There are many financial challenges facing rural hospitals,” Goodno said.

“Our goal is to provide quality patient care while trying to operate efficiently.”

Yvonne Harbaugh of Kiowa. She graduated from NWOSU in 2001. Justin also has ties to Kiowa, attending part of his elementary years here. Justin continues his job as multi-county inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (inspecting primarily retail establishments and some for the FDA.) Their son Colby is a college freshman in Texas, continuing rodeo as a calf roper.

Daughter Ciera is a high school junior and trying to best finish a college course before enrolling at South Barber. Ciera also excels in rodeo events of roping, goat-tying and barrel racing. The couple has near four-month-old twins Janda and Jancey. They are currently residing with her parents and will probably build a home in the country.

The Goodnos were married in Kiowa’s United Methodist Church were she said, “I plan to be active.”

Goodno Discusses Her Role as CFO As CFO Goodno said she’ll look at ways to reduce costs and encourage department heads to stay within their budgets. She’ll also help look at ways to increase revenues by possibly providing more medical services. She’s excited about the future of the hospital in a new facility.

She’ll also be helpful as Kiowa’s Hospital moves closer to implementing Electronic Medical Records (EMR) as federally mandated. The board is in the process of purchasing this costly system. Goodno said Stafford was 30 to 40 percent into the EMR process.

“I am happy I’ll be able to contribute to the hospital foundation,” Goodno said. She was treasurer of the Health Foundation at Stafford; worked with fundraising, marketing and the tax credit program.

Hospital and Manor CEO Aldeen “Van” Vandeveer said of Goodno, “I’m absolutely thrilled to have her here. She comes highly recommended. She’s able to work into our operation smoothly.

Janell is a very knowledgeable young woman – so good at what she does.

She’ll be a distinct asset with the new hospital program. She’s coming in at the right time.”

After being at her new job for a day, Goodno said, “It was busy, but good.”

She described her co-workers as “warm and welcoming.”

“We left Kiowa 10 years ago,” Goodno said. “I thought it was a great community then – but you don’t realize how much until you come back home.”

This position requires the ability to obtain a provisional inspector license and a State Inspector License for plumbing, mechanical and electrical. Must possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record.

Lynn Says & Marisa’s Missives

The prodigal daughter

By Lynn L. Martin Most of this column is written by my daughter, Marisa Dye, and was intended for next Friday publication in the Alva ReviewCourier. I thought I might add a bit more to it and use the combination of the two columns today.

Marisa and I had a cell phone text exchange Sunday that went like this.

Lynn: I’ve heard terrible news. I’ve heard from a granddaughter you are going to the Dark Side and trading your Blackberry for an iPhone.

Lynn: Remember, Steve Jobs died.

Before, when he left, Apple went down the tubes. I’ve failed as a parent.

Marisa: Yes, the inevitable next step is becoming a Democrat. I’m doomed.

Marisa ;) Now, here’s Marisa’s column:

By Marisa (Martin) Dye While I know the story of the Prodigal Son doesn’t mention a daughter, I may have recently earned that title in my father’s view. However, in my version, I didn’t go spend my inheritance (What

inheritance!?!) on wild living. Instead, I broke one of the main requirements to remain a Martin family member in good standing.

The first time I heard the phrase, “You’re not a Martin if…” I was in elementary school.

It was during the holidays.

When I refused to eat a second bite of pecan pie because I thought it tasted gross, Dad proclaimed, “Well, you’re not a Martin if you don’t like pecan pie!” I remember being seriously concerned about this information. Would they change my last name? Would I have to be adopted by a non-pecan-pie-loving family? Luckily, by the time I was a teen, I appreciated the merits of pecan pie as much as I did Dad’s sense of humor.

Other things were added to the list of “Martin requirements” as I grew.

For example, a Martin had to be a Republican. Most importantly, a Martin must never, ever, own or use a product produced by The Company Which Shall Not Be Named (i.e., one represented by a certain fruit).

Since I grew up in a strictly IBM household, I was sheltered from “The

Dark Side” for many years. I took a home-built DOS/Windows-based computer to college. Never was I tempted to stray toward the “fruit” computers, especially as their market-share spiraled downward.

Then, the unthinkable happened – Steve Jobs returned to “The Dark Side”. The company turned around and, a few years ago, my own mother granted my Christmas wish of an &%$% (censored to protect sensitive readers) Shuffle! Even more shocking, a year ago, Dad got a certain smart phone from The Company Which Shall Not Be Named, though he quickly declared it inferior and returned it within days.

Since my childhood brainwashing was still strong in me, my first smart phone was a Blackberry. Alas, RIM’s product quality (and market share) has dropped like a rock, and it’s time to jump ship with an upgrade. After much consideration, and partially influenced by the fact that I work in the education industry, which has always favored “fruit” products, I’m ordering their latest phone. My father’s reaction to the “terrible” news? He texted, “I’ve failed as a parent.” Will I come crawling back, begging for forgiveness? You’ll be the first to know (through Dad’s Lynn Says column, I’m sure).

By Yvonne Miller Can’t believe November has already arrived – but it has. That means it’s time for Border Line Theatre’s fall production at the community building in Kiowa, Kan. The first performance is just one week from Saturday night.

Murder mystery comedy “Done to Death” opens Saturday, November 12 with a dinner theatre at 6:30 p.m.

A matinee performance is at 2 p.m., the next day.

The second weekend of shows is November 19 with a dinner theatre performance and 20th with a matinee.

South Barber teacher Meagan Masters directs this play with a cast of many new faces to the Border Line stage as well as a couple veterans.

Peeking in at rehearsals finds Masters bringing out the best in the characters.

Many portray the world’s most well-respected murder-mystery writers who come together and are “dying” to concoct the perfect unsolvable murder plot. The voice alone of the weird Butler (Gary Jacobs) will have you creeped out and laughing all at the same time.

well Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. Later she served on the Board of Deacons and Board of Trustees, and Church Council. She played in the Bell Choir, and was a member of Pilgrim Daughters where she served as treasurer for many years. She worked for USD 255 for 25 years, retiring in 1990, first as Grade School secretary for four years and then as Board Clerk and Secretary for the superintendent.

She and Leon enjoyed traveling and visited all but two of the lower 48 states, as well as Canada and Mexico.

She enjoyed bridge and was a huge Jayhawk basketball fan. She and Leon shared the enjoyment of most all sports and were avid supporters of school and community activities. She served as one of the four chairmen for funeral dinners at church for 21 years and volunteered regularly for the General Store and American Red Cross Blood Bank.

She was preceded in death recently by her husband, in addition to her parents, and an infant baby sister.

Survivors include her daughter; Linda and husband, Brian Hollis of Wichita; Kansas, son, Larry and wife, Candi Eckert of Louisburg, Kansas, granddaughter, Lindsay and husband, Eric Bishop of Lawrence, Kansas, brother, Max Benningfield and wife, LaDonna of Alva, sister, Dorene and husband, Melvin Joy of Durham, Kansas, brother-in-law, Carl Eckert and wife, Juanita of Kiowa, Kansas, and sister-in-law Edith Boyle of Tracy, California, nieces, nephews and other family and friends Memorials are suggested to Kiowa Congregational United Church of Christ, Kiowa District Hospital, or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice through the funeral home.

received several promotions which led him to Edmond, Alva, Woodward and Muskogee. While working Fred obtained a degree in Business Administration from Northwestern Oklahoma State University. He retired from ONG as Vice President of Operations in 1998.

He received many career related awards and also served as chairman of many service organizations over the years including: Rotary, Junior Chamber, Salvation Army, Muskogee Port Authority and United Way. Fred was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He was a firm believer in God, a loyal Democrat, a die-hard OU football fan, and an avid golfer (making two holes in one).

Fred was preceded in death by a daughter Stacy; his parents; one sister, Geneva Straun; and two brothers, Johnny Helms and Elmer Lee Helms.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn; two daughters and their husbands, Kristi and Jim Wilson and Shary and Charles Meadowcroft; two sons, Fred Helms and Roger and his wife Darla; nine grandchildren, Kacy Wilson, Dillon Helms, Raimi Wilson, Kelli Helms, Carson Helms, Quincy Helms, Addison Helms, Raquel and Johnny Velasquz and Jenny White; four great grandchildren, Alyssa, Kaleigh, Kaden and Kyler; a brother and his wife, Bob and Carolyn Helms; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Alva Municipal Cemetery Memorial Contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice of the Valley Sherman Home.

Graduating from Farry High School in 1948, she attended Northwestern State College in Alva, Oklahoma for one year prior to her marriage to Leon Clyde Eckert on October 16, 1949 at the Cora Nazarene Church. Living their entire married life in Kiowa until Leon’s recent death on October 15, 2011, only one day shy of their 62nd wedding anniversary, they were blessed with two children, Linda Sue and Larry Leon. She has been an active member since joining the Congregational Church in 1953.

Routine and brief describes Alfalfa County commissioner’s meeting

By Roger McKenzie Monday’s meeting of the Alfalfa County commissioners was routine and brief. The top item for county employees was the approval of payroll warrants for payment.

The rest of the meeting consisted of routine approvals. The county clerk was authorized to seek bids on equipment and insulation for a new 2012 Tahoe vehicle which the sheriff’s department plans to purchase via state bid.

Twenty-one road crossing permits were granted. Nine were for SandRidge Services in District 1. RiteWay Construction had six in District 2 and two in District 1. Mid-America Midstream, associated with Chesapeake, got three permits—two in District 1 and one in District 2. A single permit was granted for Select Energy in District 1.

Routine items including the minutes of the previous meeting and maintenance and operations warrants were also approved.

EFFA LOU HERBST CLARKE AMARILLO—Effa Lou Herbst Clarke, 81, of Amarillo, died Monday, October 31, 2011. A memorial service will be Thursday, November 3, 2011, at 1 p.m., at the Northside Church of Christ in Waynoka. Burial will be in Waynoka Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are

eight years before moving to southern California working for numerous telephone companies in construction. He then moved to Arizona where he worked for the Federal Aviation Administration until his retirement in 1985. He was awarded the Secretary of Transportation Award for Valor in 1974 for helping rescue five persons trapped in a crashed private airplane at Grand Canyon National Airport. Since his retirement, he spent many hours working with Baptist Builders constructing and remodeling churches in Arizona and Oklahoma.

He was a member of the Cherokee First Baptist Church and spent his days helping many people and the church with construction and remodeling projects.

Surviving are his wife, Marlene; sister, Laura Meyer and her husband Dennis of Tuttle; brother-in-law, J.N. Gray and his wife Wanda of Jet; brother-in-law, Don Gray and his wife Linda of Hobbs, New Mexico; sister-in-law, Ann Hawkins and her husband Russell of Borne, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters; Joyce Morland and Erma Arnold.

PTO Fall Fest fun at SB elementary Sunday Eat Chili, Cinnamon Rolls, Loaded Baked Potatoes

By Yvonne Miller Kiddos can have a blast bobbing for apples, throwing each other in “jail”, posing for silly pictures and much more at the South Barber PTO Fall Fest Sunday, November 6 from 4-6 p.m. It’s at the elementary school in Kiowa.

PTO President Tiffany Bodemann said weather will determine if the Fall Fest is held on the playground or in the gym.

The community is invited to eat yummy comfort food at Fall Fest.

You’ll find chili, homemade cinnamon rolls, loaded baked potatoes and more at the concession stand.

Buy an $8 wristband at the ticket booth to play unlimited games. Each grade has a PTO representative who helped organize a game or activity which include: PK – cupcake decorating; K – apple toss and pumpkin pond; 1st grade – bobbing for apples; 2nd grade – facepainting

by C.J. Webster; 3rd grade – jail (.25 cents is your bail) and ping pong toss; 4th grade – photo booth; 5th grade – bean bag toss; 6th grade – cake walk.

The junior high cheerleaders organize a Candy Corn Spitting Contest.

Each class created a scarecrow which will be raffled.

Tiffany said proceeds from Fall Fest support projects for PK-6th grade students. She said the PTO is working toward obtaining a 501 (c) 3 status.

NATIONAL FFA AWARDS --- Burlington FFA members who scored at National FFA Convention Agricultural Communications Career Development Event were Molly Vap, Tiffany Rieger, Hanna Newman, Victoria Loeser, and Katelyn Garvie.

Burlington FFA at National Convention Members of the Burlington FFA Chapter in Oklahoma were one of 31 teams participating in the National FFA Agricultural Communications Career Development Event (CDE).

The event was held in conjunction with the 84th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. The team, led by advisor Travis Bradshaw, was awarded a Gold emblem. Members also competed for individual awards with 150 other participants. The event, held at the University Place Hotel in Indianapolis, Ind., is one of many educational activities at the national FFA convention in which FFA members practice the lessons learned in agricultural education classes.

Annual Avard Mountain Man Rendezvous this Saturday Historically-accurate re-enactment You can step back in time to the year 1835 this Saturday when you enter the encampment at this year’s Avard Mountain Man Rendezvous.

Rendezvous was an annual event of autumn in the American wilderness, when mountain men came down from the high country to trade with the flatlanders of the American Plains.

A historically accurate re-enactment of the era is portrayed by folks that come every year to the Avard Lake Park, in Avard, located 13 miles SW of Alva.

These folks are history buffs like no other! Many feel they were born too late and they feel an intense affinity for the time when most of our great country was still wild and mostly undiscovered lands.

Mountain men were very solitary

folks most of the year, residing in the mountains and hills, trapping and hunting animals for the fur trade and many were very skilled in crafting beautiful trade goods such as knives and bead-worked pouches or moccasins and shirts made of hides tanned into creamy smooth leather. These type of goods can still be seen and purchased through this event - some of the participants are crafting during the time they are here and you can observe and inquire about the work.

The public being welcomed into camp on Saturday, November 5th, will have the opportunity to see such entertainment as hawk and knife throwing; that’s tomahawk and knife throwing to you flatlanders. There will also be a Black Powder Shooting Contest

Online poll shows 2-1 vote against street repair charge The chances look slim of financing street repairs by imposing a $5 monthly charge to Alva utility bills, according to an online poll completed Monday on the Alva Review-Courier web site.

To impose the charge, a city-wide election will have to be held. The poll conducted on the Alva Review-Courier web site shows 65% of the respondents would vote against it with 35% in favor.

The poll is non-scientific and didn’t distinguish between registered voters and non-registered among the 201 who responded.

The Alva City Council voted last month to have City Business Manager Steven Brown draft a ballot proposal on the matter. An update on the issue is expected at next Monday’s Alva City Council meeting.

Celebrity Challenge added to NWOSU Ranger Rodeo Performances 7 p.m. Thursday; 9 a.m. & 7 p.m. Friday & Saturday

By Jim Stout Rodeo celebrities have been added to this year’s Ranger Rodeo program including three to challenge the top cowboys for the Ranger Rodeo which begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Woods County Fairgrounds Arena. Slack performance events are 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Famous announcers Ty Dean and Cody Kartack with Left Lane Rodeo Productions have been contracted for the event, according to Interim Rodeo Coach Kody Woodward of Northwestern Oklahoma State University. They will call the shots and keep the pace moving with background and entertainment between contestants.

Thursday night will include the antics of popular bullfighter and Northwestern Rodeo Alum Justin Rumford with his specialty acts.

The students are learning addition and subtraction in math class and are also learning new vocabulary words by reading AR books. They also have a new student teacher, Lexi Powers, who is currently going to college at NWOSU majoring in Elementary Education. She enjoys being around little kids and also loves being a student teacher.

“Burlington has been very welcoming and the people are very nice.

I also have the best cooperating teacher, Mrs. Feely,” said Powers. The first grade class is going to have a great year ahead of them.

A $250 prize has been added to each challenge with either the top collegiate cowboy or the celebrity pocketing the prize money.

the Ranger Rodeo team from Ponca City and Graves and Sartain are also former Ranger Rodeo team members.

Saturday night’s rodeo is billed as a Short Round Final Performance with only the top 10 contestants in each event.

Also on the celebrity list for Saturday is former Ranger Rodeo Coach Shannon Frascht, also a National Finals Rodeo qualifier.

The jam-packed program will include bull riding, bareback and saddleback broncs, calf-roping, steer wrestling, team roping plus Ladies’ barrel racing, goat-tying, and breakaway roping will be offered each night.

Concessions are available and tickets at the door are $6 for adults, $4 12&under.

Wednesday morning, Ranger Rodeo Team members will treat local children to free horseback rides and sawhorse roping events on the Alva square.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Amtrak officials say they have no beef with using cattle-based biodiesel to power their Heartland Flyer train.

The railroad said Monday that a mix of beef tallow and diesel fuel effectively powered the passenger train’s 3,200-horsepower engine. Following a yearlong test on the rails between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth, Texas, an evaluation found that the fuel blend met industry standards, engine wear was limited and emissions were below federal limits for the type of engine using it.

Roy Deitchman, Amtrak’s vice president of environmental, health and safety vice president, said the railroad was able to replace about 35,000 gallons of diesel with a locally produced renewable fuel during the test.

Tallow is often used to make soap or animal feed. Previous tests found that engines running on a biodiesel mix had lower emissions, but further testing

was needed to ensure its gaskets didn’t wear prematurely with an animal-based product in the engine. Amtrak said the blend resulted in no more wear than usual.

The results, presented last week at a railroad environmental conference at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, also showed less pollution.

Amtrak used a $274,000 federal grant from the Federal Railroad Administration and worked with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to test the fuel in a General Electric P328 locomotive. It launched the test during Earth Day festivities in Oklahoma City in 2010.

The train stops daily at Oklahoma City, Norman, Purcell, Pauls Valley and Ardmore in Oklahoma and Gainesville and Fort Worth in Texas. State governments help fund its operation.

While biodiesel can be more expensive than traditional fuel, it can reduce demand for oil.

Timberlake Honor Rolls An error was in material from Timberlake Schools supplied to The Newsgram in last week’s issue. Portions of the story on the Honor Rolls for the first nine weeks should have read as follows.

Timberlake voters prepare for Tuesday’s School vote Voters wishing to vote in Timberlake’s School Bond Election next Tuesday may do so in person or by absentee ballot, according to Election Board Secretary Kelly Stein for Alfalfa County.

A photo identification card will be required for those voting in person, Stein reminded.

“Any item used for proof of identity for voting must have been issued by the federal government, the State of Oklahoma, or a federally recognized tribal government,” Stein said. In addition, the proof of identity must show the name of the person to whom it was issued, a photograph of the person, and must include an expiration date that is after the election date.

Voters who want to cast absentee ballots still can do so at the County Election Board office on Friday, November 4, or Monday, November 7. A two-member, bipartisan Absentee Voting Board will be on duty each day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to assist absentee voters. Stein noted the deadline has passed for obtaining a ballot to vote by mail.
