The Sage Brush Music Festival will be happening in Waynoka on September 15, at the Waynoka Rodeo Grounds. This will be Waynoka’s first ever music festival. The music starts at 2 p.m. and will go all afternoon and into the night. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets, come sprawl out under the sun to soak up the tunes of Ali Harter, The Great American Jug Band, The Aaron Woods Band, The Jake Bowers Band and the Damn Quails. There is a lot of variety between them, so there is great music for people of all tastes. Surprise guests may appear in between bands. While the musicians are strumming, and the listeners are dancing, there will also be a volleyball tournament going on. Teams of 2-6 players can enter the tournament any time between now and

even up to 2:30 p.m. on the 15th. There is an entry fee per player, and prizes will be awarded for first and second place. There will be other games, as well, if you want to play casually. Local famous food vendors Joe Hommertzheim and Delmar Brune will be set up selling delicious hamburgers, barbeque and other great foods and drinks. Everything you’ll need to have

a great day will be available! South Barber School Board closer to adopting drug policy; vandalism reported

By Yvonne Miller South Barber’s Board of Education met for their September meeting Monday night with business conducted in under one hour. President Kent Swartz presided with all members present including: Jeff Black, Deb Helfrich, Bob Schrock, Dana Roark, Janet Robison and Michael Anderson. Superintendent Brad Morris and board clerk Julie Johnson also sat at the table. Giving the South Barber School Site Council report, PK-6 Principal Marcia Cantrell said that after she and the site council members worked on a District Drug Testing Policy for a year, they are satisfied with the document. It is up to the board to proceed with adoption and implementation. The board had their attorney review the proposal. The board decided once they determine cost of implementation, they will seek public input. Copies of the proposed drug policy will be available at the central office. The board may hold a public meeting regarding the policy. Cantrell said site council officers remain the same for this school year: Mark Pollock, president; Dooli Rugg, secretary. — Board approved high school teacher Meagan Masters as assistant high school girls tennis coach. — Current bills of approximately$294,200 were approved for payment. Vandalism In her principal’s report, Cantrell re-

ported a small amount of vandalism to elementary school property. Someone used a knife to slash two tether balls, which cost about $25 or $30 each Morris said. Cantrell said the elementary tennis court nets were also slashed. The superintendent said cost of the nets is around $250. Speculation by those at the meeting was this vandalism could be linked to weekend vandalism that involved slashing many vehicle tires in various locations, primarily in the northeast quadrant of Kiowa. A separate story tells about it. More South Barber School Business and Events Superintendent Morris thanked the Myrtle King Estate for presenting the school district with a $5,000 check. Of that, $3,800 was applied to a matching grant for interactive white boards. The remainder was used to update technology at the school. Superintendent Morris commended Principal Cantrell and secretary Mary Lynn Meyer for their initiation of the school’s building evacuation plan. Friday, August 31, there was a suspected gas leak at the elementary school. Kansas Gas ran three tests of the building and found no leaks. Morris thanked everyone who helped with the situation. A change had to be made in the grade school roofing project. The additional cost is $8,500 that was taken from the contingency fund built into the original cost.

Principal Cantrell and Jr/Sr High Principal Brent Shaffer reported on the ongoing sports activities, teacher trainings, student testing, and many other events. Principal Shaffer reminded that senior Micaela Kirkwood is Miss South Barber and will represent her school in the Miss Cinderella Talent Show and Pageant on the NWOSU campus in Alva, October 11 and 12. Board member Dana Roark is a teacher at NWOSU and also coordinator of the Miss Cinderella Pageant. She encourages the South Barber community to attend the event and support Micaela. South Barber’s Football Homecoming is Friday, September 21. Senior queen candidates are: Keeli Hostetler, Cierra Houlton and Kirsti Summers.

Arrest made in Kiowa tire slashing case

By Yvonne Miller Several Kiowa people found slashed tires on their vehicles Sunday. Scott Rathgeber at D&W said they had six tires slashed on vehicles parked at that business, located in the north end of Kiowa along K2 Highway. Rathgeber said his neighbors who have shops in that area also had tires slashed. He said vehicles parked at the Molz building had 11 slashed tires. Denny Callison had four slashed tires on vehicles at his shop. Just to the south of the shops, two tires were slashed at the David Rathgeber residence. Scott said he heard that a total of nearly 35 tires were slashed around town. It is believed that the vandalism occurred sometime Saturday night or Sunday morning. When contacted by the Newsgram Tuesday, Kiowa Police Chief Steven Johnson confirmed that two of his officers made an arrest Monday night to See Arrest Page 8

Arrest someone suspected in the slashings. The chief said he could not yet provide any details, as the case is under investigation. As reported in the South Barber School Board story, similar vandalism occurred at the elementary school playground that was discovered Monday. Two tether balls on the playground were slashed as were the tennis court nets.

David and Goliath story in Woods County Fair BarBQ Kickoff By Lynn L. Martin About a dozen competitors showed up to participate in the Woods County Fair BarBQ cookoff held Saturday, September 8, 2012. Eleven of these competitors pulled in with huge black cookers drawn by pick up trucks. One team, a 7th grade girl and her Dad, showed up with basically “George Foreman” Grills. The organizers were very careful to identify participants only by numbers drawn from an envelope, so that the judges would have no idea as to which team’s work they were tasting. When prize awarding time arrived, jaws dropped five times in a row as Erica Hildinger, a small blonde 7th grader from Nash who attends Timberlake Schools, strode from the crowd to the grab the first prize envelope in every category: Chicken, Ribs, Pork Butt and Brisket. She and her dad, Barry Hildinger, are natives of the Nash area and compete in many cooker competitions throughout the area. He works at Vance Air Force Base in Enid.
