EXTRA BURDEN ON M50 USERS

Fianna Fáil’s TD for Dublin Mid West, has said that the financial ability of road users, especially commuters and road hauliers, has to be taken into account before any attempt is made to impose VAT on toll charges on the M50 or Dublin Port Tunnel.

“The recent opinion by the European Court of Justice which would force toll operators charge 23% VAT on stateowned tolls, including the M50 and Port Tunnel, would put an excessive

burden on motorists and commercial users, especially those who use the motorways for work,” said Curran.

“Based on the costs of a round trip commute on the M50, a regular commuter can be paying upwards of €1000 per year on midweek tolls for getting to work. Most of these commuters have no realistic alternative but to use the M50 for getting to work.”

“If the ruling is final, the Departments of Transport and

Finance have to work together to mitigate any additional cost to regular commuters.”

“A toll rebate scheme for hauliers and other commercial users on the Port Tunnel and M50 also has to be looked by both Departments, to maintain competitive transport costs for business.

“It is also incumbent upon Minister Ross to ensure that any costs of this ruling do not further decimate the general roads budget.”

has been under consideration since 2010, TII has been taking €17 million per year from the annual allocated roads budget, to cover the cost of paying the VAT to revenue. This has occurred without any additional support from the exchequer.”

“Given the perilous state of the roads budget, this situation cannot be allowed to continue.”

“Since 2012, the investment made in regional, local and national roads is well under the level required to keep up with maintenance repair costs, and again this year the government will be under-spending by an estimated €400 to €500 million, or roughly 50%, below what is required,” added Curran.

“This level of underinvestment in maintaining the roads network of the last five years is irresponsible in the extreme and cannot continue.”

“We have to ensure that a greater level of exchequer funding given to the TII to better fund our ailing roads network,” concluded Curran.

O’CONNOR CALLS FOR ACTION ON CONCERNS OF ST MARKS GAA CLUB

Councillor Charlie O’Connor has called on Council Management to take effective action in respect of the ongoing concerns of St Marks GAA Club on Cookstown Road which has mounted a campaign to deal with anti-social behavior and related matters at their site.

The issues were raised

by Charlie O’Connor, who is also a long time member of the Club, at the September meeting of the Tallaght Area Committee and he sought a report from the

Council following the attendance by officials of the Council’s Public Realm section with the Club, regarding antisocial behavior, poor drainage on some of the playing pitches and the need to have proper boundary fencing around the Club’s Park.

The Council responded to Charlie O’Connor saying that “The request to fence the Park is one that has only recently been made. Due to the area involved and length of fencing required to

surround this Park it will not be possible to include it in the ongoing maintenance or public realm improvement works programme.

It is proposed that a cost estimate will be prepared for this proposal and that it will be considered for inclusion in the Council’s 3 year rolling capital works programme.”

According to Charlie O’Connor, there is strong support among the members of the Tallaght Area

Committee that the provision of a proper fence would be prioritised and the Council has been asked to understand the need for this development.

Councillor O’Connor also asked about the poor drainage on some of the playing pitches and was told that “the Council has been aware of ongoing drainage issues in some locations in the Park and has taken measures in the past to address these matters.

As these

problems appear to persist and have not been satisfactorily addressed by the measures taken by the Council to date it seems that it will now be necessary to undertake a more extensive examination of the drainage in the area to identify the source of these problems and to design a solution to them. This work will commence with a drainage survey which it is hoped will be carried out in the very near future.”

TALLAGHT RECRUITS WOULD BRING GARDAÍ CLOSER TO COMMUNITY

The recruitment of 800 new Gardaí is an opportunity to strengthen the forces links with communities in Tallaght and across Dublin, according to Dublin South West TD and

Independent Minister, Dr Katherine Zappone.

The Minister is welcoming the decision to increase the size of the force and is actively encouraging people in Tallaght with an interest in

PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS TO BECOME PUBLISHED AUTHORS WITH INNOVATIVE NEW PROGRAMME

A free programme for local schools will see young primary level pupils become published authors.

The Emu Ink Schools’ Publishing Programme is an online course, which will open to schools from this month.

The programme was created by Emu Ink Founder and former Newspaper Editor, Emer Cleary and her Software Developer husband, Brian.

The course takes the form of a series of step-by-step lessons, which schools can take part in at a time that suits them during their chosen term.

These lessons include focus on idea generation, character development, plots, dialogue, description and editing, to name a few; and are all in line with the English curriculum.

According to the developers there is no

need to hold a book fair to take part as the programme is all about learning, while ensuring students get involved in the process of becoming real published authors.

Once the course is completely the pupil’s short stories will be turned into a published anthology – the course itself is free, with a minimum order of 50 books (at €10 each) required to take part.

Mrs Cleary said: “We are very excited to be bringing the Emu Ink Schools’ Publishing Programme to life.

There are so many young, talented, aspiring writers out there and, through the programme, these children can realise their dream right now – and become real published authors!

“It is important for schools to know that our programme is not simply a printing

service. We believe that in order to become real authors, writers need to experience what that means and to work for it. So the children will follow the lessons and exercises as they build their stories – eventually seeing their work in print, when they are published as

Emu Ink launched Ireland’s youngest independent author, 9-year-old Joe Prendergast, when the company published Joe’s trilogy The Great Fragola Brothers – which saw him winning RTE’s Young Person of the Year award in 2013.

LUCAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC CELEBRATES 10TH BIRTHDAY!

Established in 2006, the Lucan School of Music is based in Coláiste Phádraig CBS, Roselawn, Lucan, Co. Dublin.

Our doors first opened on Monday 4th September 2006.

We currently have 420 students attending classes at the school each week.

Lucan School of Music teachers cover a wide range of exam boards, but the most popular is the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM). Over 100 students sit RIAM exams in the local centre at Lucan School of Music each year. Around 150 students perform at the annual concert series in the school hall, everyone is given the opportunity to perform on their own or as part of a group / choir / chamber orchestra.

All ages and skill levels are welcome; from preschool children to retired adults, from total beginner to advanced levels.

‘The last 10 years have been challenging, but very rewarding.

The support from parents and teachers, as well as the management / teachers / staff at Coláiste Phádraig has been overwhelming.

We teach all ages, but when reflecting on my time running Lucan School of Music, what strikes me is the progression of the children that have grown up coming to us. It has been amazing to see kids progress from the Introduction to Music on to their instrument. Many of our younger students have gone on to study music in third level. This year I have had job applications from students that came to us as beginners, and have now got third level music qualifications!

The most rewarding thing is when a students come out of their

lessons with a smile and can enjoy their practice at home or share music with family and friends, at any age and any level. It’s not always about exams, but whatever personal goal the student has, and the ability to really enjoy and appreciate music.’

Susan Callaghan, Director History of the Lucan School of Music Susan Callaghan BA is the Director of the Lucan School of Music. Susan received a FETAC Level 2 award in Music Technology at Kylemore College; and BTECH Higher National Diploma in Sound Operations and Production and an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Media Production and Management (Ballyfermot College of Further Education). In recent years Susan has participated in the Kodály Society of Ireland summer course, and completed International Summer School for Kodálybased Music Pedagogy in the Kodály Institute of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Kecskemét, Hungary.

Growing up in Lucan, Susan

played the flute in the Lucan Concert Band for over 10 years. She has played guitar since 1993 and has taught guitar since 1999.

As a songwriter / singer / guitarist Susan has worked with bands in a variety of styles playing live and recording. Currently Susan plays guitar with the Spook of the Thirteenth Lock’s Electric Guitar Orchestra as well as working on her own original music. Susan is Musical Director of four community choirs, two of which are with the organisation Music Matters

in particular working with singers of all abilities who have intellectual disabilities / restricted mobility.

During her third level education Susan taught beginners guitar from her home in Lucan, and the demand for her services grew consistently over the years. Her enjoyment of teaching and the positive feedback she received from students and parents, as well as their requests for classes in other instruments for family and friends, led to her decision to start a music school in the Lucan

We are very lucky to have the use of the secondary school’s facilities, and with thanks to Brian Murtagh, current principal Tony Brady, and the Board of Management we have been very happy there since September 2006. On the first week of opening, there were over 200 students enrolled for class, and the school has grown every since.

TALLAGHT HOSPITAL JOINS FORCES WITH LOCAL ORGANISATIONS AT THE FETTERCAIRN COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR

Tallaght Hospital joined forces once again with other community organisations at the Fettercairn Community Health Fair.

The annual event which

took place at the Fettercairn Community and Youth Centre saw information stands from various local organisations. Tallaght Hospital provided

useful information to attendees about the various services available at the Hospital, including its work on patient advocacy and

volunteer

The Fettercairn Community Health Fair, held yesterday, welcomed over 600 people. In addition to providing information on services, Tallaght Hospital disseminated material about afflictions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Stroke. Dr Ronán Collins, Director of Stroke Services and Consultant Physician at Tallaght Hospital, attended the Fair to give a talk about Stroke awareness, an area of special research for Tallaght Hospital.

Attendees were also able to engage with future developments at the Hospital, at a talk given by the National Paediatric Development Board.

The focus of this talk was on the new satellite centre that will be built on the Tallaght Hospital Campus.

What You Need To Know About Laser Hair Removal

How long does a treatment take?

Well, yes and no. Laser treatments destroy hair follicles, but only a certain percentage of hairs are attached to the follicle at any given time as part of the natural growth cycle. Therefore only the hairs in the active phases will not grow back. This means that each treatment will result in a greater percentage of permanent hair reduction, which can be up to 90 per cent reduction after six session.

Is it safe?

Yes it is but only in the hands of a professional. It is vital that the laser therapist is qualified and that they offer a thorough consultation and patch test prior to treatment. This initial consultation will give you an opportunity ask all the appropriate questions so that you understand how medications, medical conditions, sun exposure, skin type and hormonal changes can affect your response to the treatments. Some medications such as some antihistamines, antidepressants, antibiotics and contraceptives, for example, are light sensitive so make sure your therapist is fully informed.

This depends on the area size, density of hair, speed of machine and your pain threshold. As a basic guide, it will take about 30 to 45 minutes to treat the legs and about 15 minutes to treat facial hair and bikini lines. With laser six to eight sessions are needed (with five to six weeks between each)

When do you start to see results?

When you undergo laser hair removal, all the hairs treated will shrivel during the treatment. The hairs will then start to shed over the next week or two.

RECORD EMERGENCY ACCOMMODATION FIGURES HIGHLIGHT HOUSING DILEMMA of physically getting a child to school.

“The other pattern emerging from these figures is that more and more families are filling the emergency accommodation, as distinct from an individual, with a year-on-year increase of 70% for families and 72% for children.

“These are damning statistics and while the government’s Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness

contains many worthwhile initiatives to provide supports for families with children in emergency accommodation, how these supports will be funded is still not clear.

“These figures mean that 1,130 families, and worryingly 2,348 children, are now living in

unsuitable emergency accommodation.

“Some are selfaccommodating, which means that they have to source the accommodation every day or couple of days. This has huge ramifications for the family and the child in particular with no stability, no access to cooking facilities, many living in one room with all their belongings, and the added difficulty, because of location,

avail of an average of 61 weeks of free childcare with children being admitted from the age of three.

Speaking in Jobstown, Minister Zappone added: “It is always a thrill to return to Rainbow House and to the other services run out of An Cosán in Jobstown.

It is important that we get the message out not just in Jobstown but in all neighbouring

communities that the biggest expansion in the history of the free pre-school scheme is now underway.

The increase of the number of free weeks up to an average of 61-weeks will translate into average savings of €4,000 per child, a €1,500 increase in savings.

This is significant for families right across South and West Dublin, as well as

the entire country.

It is an honour as Minister for Children to see at first hand the incredible work being carried out by Rainbow House and childcare providers in every community.

Their dedication has transformed the lives of children and families and each and every centre is now an integral part of its local community.

CONCERN AT RAT INFESTATION RESPONSE TIMES

Dublin South West Sinn Féin TD, Seán Crowe, has expressed concern at the Health Service Executive (HSE) delays

“The Environmental Health Service, who has overall responsibility for any outbreak of rat or vermin infestation, is clearly under severe pressure supposedly due to staff and other resource difficulties.

“We know that a rat infestation previously plagued a housing estate in Clondalkin

earlier this year and there are similar reports now coming from Ballyfermot, where massive rodents are swarming the area.

“This year has seen an increase in vermin visibility and the amount of calls coming from concerned residents into my constituency office would suggest that the problem seems to be getting worse.

“This may be down to favourable weather conditions but is undeniably linked to the amount of illegal

waste being dumped right across Dublin “The four week response time to a vermin outbreak is unacceptable and needs to be addressed.

I have written to the Minster for Health Simon Harris asking him for an explanation and extra resources to be allocated to the in Dublin’s Pest Control Units if required.

FREE ALZHEIMER’S AND DEMENTIA CARE WORKSHOPS NOW AVAILABLE TO FAMILY CARERS Home Instead Senior Care is offering a unique approach to help families understand and cope with the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Over 30 free workshops are available for families throughout the country and will be taking place over the next four weeks. September is World Alzheimer’s Month, an international campaign dedicated to raising awareness and challenging the stigma associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

According to the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, there are an estimated 55,000 people living in Ireland with a form of dementia and 63 per cent of these people are living at home in the community.

“Given the significant number of families affected by dementia, coupled with the fact that over half of the people we care for are living with a form of dementia, we felt it was important to provide these workshops and support family carers. At present there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, but there is care. Our workshops provide a focus on the care aspect and helping families better understand the disease, it’s symptoms as well as coping mechanisms that will help family carers in their mission in caring and keeping loved ones at home”, says Ed Murphy, CEO and Founder of the Home Instead Senior Care network in Ireland.

Entitled, ‘Confidence to Care’, the dementia care workshops help

family carers gain knowledge and understanding of professional caregiving techniques, ultimately giving them the confidence to care for loved ones at home. The workshops are based on the training programme, CARE: Changing Ageing Through Research and Education, that is provided to Home Instead’s base of 4,000 professional caregivers.

CHANGES TO PAY AND DISPLAY PARKING VILLAGE SPACES

South Dublin County Council introduced 30 Minutes Free Parking in Council owned Pay and Display parking spaces in our seven villages of Tallaght, Clondalkin, Lucan, Rathfarnham, Rathcoole, Templeogue and Palmerstown on 7th April, 2014.

To improve this service, we have made changes to the Parking Pay and Display

Machines to facilitate the issuing of a ticket to customers in order to secure their 30 Minutes Free Parking.

As a result, from Tuesday 6th September 2016 ALL cars must display a valid ticket or permit For 30 Minutes Free Parking – press Green Button to issue ticket and display ticket clearly in your car

To Park for more than 30 Minutes – pay relevant tariff and 30 Minutes Free Parking will be added to the expiry of your ticket Please note 30 Minutes Free Parking can only be availed of once a day – car registrations will be observed by the Parking Warden and any motorists attempting to abuse the

system by availing of the 30 Minutes more than once a day will be subject to a fine.

Our South Dublin Parking Services Wardens have been requested to place notices on all cars for the next few weeks to inform motorists of this change.

A bedding in time will be observed for customers to adjust to the change.

Please note the 30 minutes free parking remains unavailable in residential areas, 10 minutes free grace time is operated in such areas.

A. You can choose to take paternity leave at any time in the 26 weeks following the birth or adoption. 1. Titanic – It may be incredibly long but there is a lot to love about Titanic and the epic love story is at the very centre of that.

Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet have sizzling chemistry and the story of Jack and Rose is a classic.

Although they are from two different worlds they fall

for each other immediately and refuse to let go.

2. Ghost – A classic starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. After he is murdered in a coverup Sam’s ghost stays behind to warn his girlfriend, Molly, that she could be in danger.

He uses a psychic to reach out to the sceptical Molly and much to her amazement – and the amazement of the psychic herself – Sam gets his message across.

3. Lars and the Real Girl – An incredibly offbeat comedy drama that will inevitably make you smile and ultimately make you think. Ryan Gosling is a shy, socially inept young man who finally brings a girl home to meet his family.

The only issue is that she is not real, she is a sex doll he bought on the internet.

Despite their misgivings his family go along with

the delusion and soon the whole town is in on the act. A great film with fantastic performances.

4. PS I Love You – If you can get passed Gerard Butler’s terrible Irish accent then this film is a real tear-jerker about love, life and the pursuit of happiness; even in your darkest days. Holly and Gerry are inseparable soulmates so when Gerry passes away after an illness Holly doesn’t know how she will survive. But Gerry has planned ahead – writing her letters that make her remember what living, and loving, is all about. Bring the tissues for this one!

5. Romeo & Juliet – Clare Danes and Leonardo Di Caprio were perfectly cast in Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 version of the Shakespearean play. This modern twist on an absolute classic has action, drama

‘HELEN AND I’ AT THE CIVIC THEATRE A new play from awardwinning Irish writer Meadhbh McHugh comes to the Civic Theatre this month.

‘Helen and I’ is a dark, clever and in-depth play about the rivalries and frailties that exist within the Irish family.

Druid theatre company will present the play in association with the Civic Theatre from September 27th until October 1st with matinee performances on September 29th and October 1st at 3pm.

The Tallaght venue has made some special changes to accommodate ‘Helen and I’ with a unique and clever seating arrangement situating the audience above the stage – giving viewers a “fly-onthe-wall perspective”.

The thrilling play stars Red Rock’s Cathy Belton in a starring role alongside Rebecca O’Mara, Paul Hickey and Seána O’Hanlon.

‘Helen and I’ is the story of two sisters who return to their family home as their father is dying.

Lynn and her older sister, Helen, have their differences but turn up to

be at their father’s side.

Lynn’s husband, Tony, arrives unexpectedly while Helen’s daughter, Evvy, is summoned to the home.

With the weather hot, humid and uncomfortable family relations soon go the same way – turning the occasion into an unmitigated disaster.

For this tangled Irish family, the only way out is through and they must find a way to talk if they want to see the other side.

The unique seating arrangement and stellar cast make ‘Helen and I’

a thrilling prospect from an exciting and talented Irish writer whose debut radio play, April Showers, won a PJ O’Connor award for new writing in 2014.

The play is directed by Annabelle Comyn with set and lighting Design by Aedín Cosgrove costume design

by Doreen McKenna and sound by Philip Stewart.

PASSENGER ... NEW ALBUM UK singer-songwriter Passenger will release his 8th studio album this week – an impressive feat for an artist that is still just 30-years-old.

The album, entitled ‘Young As The Morning Old As The Sea’, will be released on September 23rd.

Passenger, real name Mike Rosenberg co-produced the new album with Chris Vallejo in Auckland and Sydney.

The first single from the album, ‘Somebody’s Love’, was released earlier in the Summer and received plenty of airplay throughout July and August.

After announced a single gig in Vicar Street this December Passenger added another date due to popular demand.

His gig on December 3rd is already sold out and there are a limited number of tickets left for the extra date on Friday, December 2nd.

Passenger is most wellknown for his stand-out hit ‘Let Her Go’ which was nominated for several awards all over the world.

The song topped the charts in several countries and

was nominated for the Brit Award for British Single of the Year – earning more than one billion YouTube views since it was released.

The prolific artist also won the British Academy’s Ivor Novello Award for Most Performed Work in 2014.

The worldwide tour will feature a full live band, a noticeable difference from the usual one-man show performed by Passenger.

Dates in the UK, Ireland and America will follow the release of the eagerly anticipated album next week.
