Minister Fitzgerald calls on latvian authorities to investigate lack of safeguards applying to contentious ‘ask.fm’ website

Frances Fitzgerald TD, Minister for Children & Youth Affairs has met with Facebook management to discuss online safeguards for children given recent concerns over cyber-bullying and internet safety The Minister met with Simon Millner, Policy Director for Facebook in Ireland and the UK. The meeting took place ahead of the Digital Youth international symposium at the Science Gallery in Dublin. Minister Fitzgerald welcomed “the child-focussed and

user-friendly safeguards and supports which Facebook have put in place to protect children and respond to concerns over cyber-bullying and inappropriate online behaviour.” Following the meeting the Minister expressed “her concern that certain other websites popular among Irish teenagers do not include the same safeguards.”

The Minister made specific reference to the contentious ‘ask.fm’ website which has come to attention

in Ireland in recent weeks due to its use as a platform for cyber-bullying.

Minister Fitzgerald has this morning stated that she intends to ask the Latvian authorities to investigate lack of safeguards applying to contentious ‘ask.fm’ website which is based in that country. Minister Fitzgerald is also to ask her colleague the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, to do likewise. Addressing the Digital Youth Symposium, Minister Fitzgerald spoke of “the

increasing centrality of digital media in our children’s lives.” “New technologies have opened a world of opportunity for our people. young Opportunities which should be accentuated. But it also brings risks must be which mitigated.”

The Minister told the Symposium that “in seeking to respond to cyber-bullying, we should seek to start by addressing bullying in the round. This requires a whole school-and-community

Speaking in advance of the PMB on statutory sick pay Sinn Fein’s spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD said the

government’s proposal to cut illness benefit by way of introducing a statutory sick pay scheme will cost jobs.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said the government should instead raise more PRSI from those employers that can afford to pay it. Deputy Ó Snodaigh said: “By passing an €89 million burden onto employers with no regard to their ability to pay some employers will be forced to close jobs, sick workers will see their pay-packets reduced and discrimination against those with disabilities or recurring illnesses will rise. “The Fianna Fáil motion to be debated this evening rightly condemns the government proposal but they offer no alternative whatsoever. To be credible in opposition you can’t just say no, you must put forward

“I am putting forward an alternative plan which would raise €91.5 million or €2.5 million more than the figure targeted by government. I am tabling an amendment to tonight’s motion proposing that the government instead increase the employers’ PRSI contributions paid by those employers that can afford to pay more without precipitating job losses or pay cuts for those on low and middle incomes. “The government could do this by raising the employer PRSI contribution made on pay exceeding €100,000 to 15.75% which would raise €91.5 million without cutting the Illness Benefit Scheme or costing jobs.”

Dublin South West TD, Seán Crowe, has called on the government to stop its crippling austerity as workers and their families are suffering from its fall out. Crowe was speaking after the release of the latest Irish League of Credit Union’s “What’s Left? Income Tracker”. The tracker found that more than 1.3 million adults in Ireland have less than €50 left over after paying essential bills each month. “The income tracker shows in black white what Sinn Féin has continually argued; we need investment and growth, not more

austerity and social spending cuts. “Those living on €50 or less a month after paying essential bills now amount to 1.3 million adults, with another 1.9 million living on less than €100 a month after paying essential bills. “Looking ahead to this winter, I am extremely worried that households will be under severe pressure to pay heating costs and Christmas expenses. According to the Irish League of Credit Union’s, heating and fuel costs are now the second most essential bill for households. “This 2012 tracker sees Ireland with 42% of

its people having to borrow money to pay bills. Some 70% say they are unable to save any money due to a lack of disposable income, and one in ten say they are unable to pay their bills from month to month. “The income tracker started in March 2011 when this government took power, and it is updated every three months. This latest surveys shows a steady decline in the amount of disposable income that households are left with at the end of the month. "When, if ever will the government wake up

Dale McDermott, who is a local activist and Dublin Organiser for Young Fine Gael said "I really do welcome the recent developments

after a long and hard fought campaign to get this bus shelter for the students and people of Tallaght village".

"This is something which we in Young Fine Gael have demanded from an early stage and managed to get movement on the issue after we wrote to Dublin Bus" he added.

"This is the 21st century, and for one of the busiest areas for public transportation in Dublin not to have a shelter is nothing short of a joke, but I am glad we can fix that for our most vulnerable".

He also said that "I hope that the people of Tallaght village and students of I.T. Tallaght benefit greatly from

this shelter, they deserve it and to see final progress on the issue is a good result".

Dale McDermott also stated "Young Fine Gael worked tirelessly on this campaign but it is a shame that petty claims by other political parties have overshadowed the result for the students and people. I will

indeed be using this bus shelter next week, but I have no doubt I won't see any Labour TD's or Councillor's within a mile of it".

Dale McDermott finished by thanking who everyone supported the campaign and looked forward to its successful installation.

Speaking at the 45th British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly Plenary (BIPA) in Glasgow on the subject of Sign language, Fine Gael Dublin South West Senator, Cait Keane, has called on the Irish and British Governments to proceed with the official recognition of British and Irish Sign Languages, respectively, without further delay.

“I welcome the passing of the motion that I put forward at the meeting of BIPA in Glasgow which calls our respective for Governments to recognise Irish sign (ISL) and British Sign Language (BSL) language in legislation. The Programme for Government commits to introducing various mechanisms to promote the recognition of

Irish sign language in this State.

“I raised this issue in an adjournment motion in the Seanad in July of 2011 and the Minister of State for Training and Skills at the Department of education and Skills, Ciarán Cannon, stated that the National Council for Special education, NCSe, had commissioned an external high-level review of the issues surrounding deaf education, which would offer policy direction to the Government in relation to ISL. “I am urging the to Government acknowledge that people who use ISL want their language to be protected and promoted in the same

way some minority languages are by the Council of europe's Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. I am calling on them to officially recognise ISL by means of legislation.

I have noted that the Welsh & Scottish Assemblies are more advanced in the facilities they provide for their respective sign language. In the UK, there is a verbal recognition of BSL (and ISL in Northern Ireland) but there is no legal recognition and that is what we are advocating for ISL/BSL by passing this motion.”

The local government reforms announced by the Minister for environment, Community & Local Government, Phil Hogan TD, represent the biggest shake-up of local government in the history of the State which will result in greater efficiencies and improved service delivery for the people of South Dublin and people right across Ireland.

“Local government have structures remained largely unchanged for more than 100 years and now more than ever we need to focus on doing more with less and getting better value for money. The reform programme, entitled

‘Putting People First’ will see local government leading economic, social and community development through a more streamlined and better managed system that will save the taxpayer over €420 million when fully implemented. “Reform will be carried out under four main themes; Structures; Funding, Accountability and Governance; economic Development and Job Creation; and Services Delivering efficiently. It will see all 80 existing Town Councils being replaced by a comprehensive system of municipal governance and the number of Councils going from 114 to 31. The number of

Councillors will be reduced by 42% and the number of Council seats will be reduced from 1,627 to no more than 950. “’Putting People First’ aims to address the weakness in the current system and to re-build confidence and trust in local government. It will also place a greater emphasis on responsibility, with a Chief executive Post replacing the local authority manager. tHe laurels Pub raises oVer €100,000 For our lady’s cHildren’s HosPital

Patrons of the Laurels Pub, Clondalkin village have raised over €100,000 to date this year for Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin. Damien Long, manager at The Laurels presented a cheque for the funds raised to Gerry Cully, fundraising manager for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital.

In April, 220 locals accompanied by orthopedic surgeons Pat Kiely and David Moore, took part in a sponsored cycle from Galway to The Laurels Pub in Clondalkin. A group of enthusiastic female advocates showed their support in September by participating in a sponsored walk from The Garda Club in Islandbridge back to the pub. In total, their

admirable efforts raised a remarkable €107,000 for the hospital. Over recent years, The Laurels has demonstrated immense support for the children’s hospital and have become the largest donator in the non-corporate sector. Commenting at the presentation, manager Damien Long said “each year, Our Lady's Children's Hospital treats and cares for thousands of children nationwide. It is a cause very close to all our hearts here in the village of Clondalkin, particularly amongst all the team and punters at The Laurels Pub. Over the past four years we have raised an overall amount of €250,000 for the hospital and hope to continue to show our support for many years to come.”

Jobless generation must be Government priority as long term unemployment increases by 4.6%.

ISMe, the Irish Small & Medium enterprises Association, has called for renewed effort from Government to tackle the jobless situation by increasing support for SMes - the main job creators. The Association warned of the long term effects on the economy and the danger of social unrest as the jobless generation increases.

The latest live register figures from the CSO confirm that unemployment remains stubbornly high 434,200 people with claiming assistance, however the number of long term claimants has increased by 4.6%, up 8,344 in the year. Just as worrying is the reduction in persons under 25 claiming, down from 19.3% in October 2010 to 16.6%, as a result of

laVelle seeks ProVision oF Playing PitcHes at griFFeen Valley Park extension council agree to relocate soil from new Parks depot development works so as to prepare lands for future pitch provision

Cllr. William Lavelle, local councillor for Lucan, has this week called for the provision of additional playing pitches at the extended area of Griffeen valley Park south of the railway line.

Lavelle stated: “I know from speaking with many local sports clubs, including in particular with Lucan Sarsfields GAA club who are located nearby, that there is a significant demand in the Lucan area for additional pitches “The extension of the Grand Canal green route through this area south of the

railway has opened up the area and highlighted the great potential that exists here.. I believe the provision of much-needed playing pitches should be the next phase of development in this area. Clubs like Lucan Sarsfields would benefit greatly from my proposal.”

Last year Lavelle first proposed that pitches should be developed adjacent to the new Green Route extension and that this should be examined in conjunction with the plans to relocate the Lucan Parks Depot to a location south of

However the relocation of depot was delayed due to a Bord Pleanala appeal affecting the associated development of a school at esker Lane. earlier this month Bord Pleanala granted planning permission for the new school at esker Lane. This move now means the council can proceed with plans to move the depot to the location south of the railway. Deputy Crowe said the SUSI online processing of student grants is clearly failing after Sinn Féin received a response to a parliamentary question from the education Minister which

Needless to say, the banks have lobbied strongly against these laws and may yet seek to frustrate them at every turn. However, if the Government remains true to its word, there will be the basis of a properly functioning Insolvency System by the end of this year. The Bill which is currently being discussed, puts in place a comprehensive and new approach to personal insolvency and could have profound consequences for people living with the consequences of debt and negative equity.

Over the next two editions, Romaine Scally Solicitor, of Romaine Scally & Company, Solicitors, Main Street, Tallaght, Dublin 24 (Telephone 01-4599506 email legal@scally.ie) deals with the proposed new Insolvency Legislation and how it might help people trying to cope with high levels of debt. Readers are cautioned to read both articles to ensure that they are fully advised in relation to the terms and conditions of this proposed new legislation.

The first article will discuss matters generally and deal with Debt Settlement Arrangements (DSA). The second edition will deal with Personal Insolvency Arrangements (PIA)

Due to the unprecedented collapse in the financial and property market, with its significant effect on the economy in general and on the property prices, many people are living with very high levels of debt and unable to sell their houses to relieve themselves of the debt as a result of negative equity.

Left to their own devices, financial institutions will never show leniency of their own accord or goodwill. Insofar as any banks are prepared to show restraint, it is only motivated by their own interests and not the interests of the borrowers. The banks hope that property prices will eventually increase so the value of their security would return in the future. Then, they would move against the borrowers for all the monies due, including penalties and accrued interest. The reality however is becoming clearer in that there is no immediate end to our economic problems and therefore some other solution needs to be introduced. This needs to come in the form of the New Insolvency Laws. For the

The word Insolvency is defined as “not being able to pay one’s bills as they become due”. The fact that any of the creditors are being lenient does not change this fact. Hundreds of thousands of Irish people are currently insolvent and many are living literally “on the brink”. Insolvency may be a short term difficulty in which case, the terms of the Personal Insolvency Legislation will not apply. For the legislation to apply, it must be established that a person is both INSOLVENT AND UNLIkELY TO BECOME SOLVENT AGAIN wITHIN 5 YEARS. Given the scale of the crisis in Ireland, most people who are currently insolvent are likely to remain so for a very long time unless there is some system to relieve them. The objectives of the legislation can be listed as follows: -

1. To provide a mechanism whereby unsustainable debt is written off immediately or over time;

2. To provide the opportunity for a “fresh start” for people in all circumstances;

3. To protect as far as possible the Family Home;

To achieve these aims, the legislation has devised two “non-judicial” debt settlement arrangements whereby debtors enter into arrangements with their creditors. The legislation has also reformed the laws relating to Bankruptcy.

While the settlement arrangements do not involve the Courts, a careful analysis of the legislation shows that the Courts will have a very important role on how the legislation plays out. In fact, this legislation may well pitch the Banks against the Judges. Banks that unreasonably refuse to engage with the

spirit of the legislation will need to apply to the Court for Orders against Borrowers. Judges might be reluctant to grant such Orders in circumstances where the Banks are deliberately frustrating the efforts by a hard-pressed borrower to deal with his or her debts.

A DEBT SETTLEMENT ARRANGEMENT (DSA) and a PERSONAL INSOLVENCY ARRANGEMENT (PIA) are arrangements whereby an insolvent debtor comes to an arrangement with his creditors. The difference between the two is that the DSA applies only to unsecured debt while the PIA applies to both unsecured and secured debt. In each case, a proposal is submitted to the Creditor through a PERSONAL INSOLVENCY PRACTITIONER (PIP). A PIP is most likely an Accountant or Solicitor who has been licensed by the Insolvency Agency which is the Agency being established to oversee the operation of the Legislation. As you can imagine, this Personal Insolvency Practitioner is a very important person in this whole new system. His/her role begins in an advisory capacity to the Debtor and once it has been decided which course of action to take, the role progresses on a more formal footing acting as a Mediator between the Debtor and the Creditors. The proposal therefore has a strong element of Independence about it as the PIP has to analyze the Debtors situation and has to look to make the Debtor solvent again within no more than 6 years. The Act gives a non-exhaustive list of the types of restructuring envisaged. The PIP begins by carrying out (in private) a full analysis of the Debtors Financial Position to determine that the Debtor is genuinely insolvent and, despite any forbearance on the part of its creditors, is likely to remain so for five years. The PIP will then inform the Debtor of the range of options most suited to his/her situation. Only then, with the Agreement of the Debtor, does the PIP go out to propose an arrangement to the Creditors. There are two principle objectives of the arrangement. a) TO MAkE THE DEBTOR SOLVENT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

b) TO PRESERVE THE FAMILY HOME Debt Settlement Arrangement (DSA)

A DSA only applies to unsecured lending (i.e. lending that is not the subject of a mortgage and has no upper limit). examples of unsecured debt include personal loans and liabilities arising from personal guarantees. The legislation gives a non-exhaustive list of the types of arrangements envisaged under the DSA including a)

c) A transfer of a specified asset to creditors

It is likely that the concept of payment arrangements will be the most common form of arrangement in a DSA. This will typically be an agreement to repay an amount to the lender over a period up to a maximum of 5 years, after which the residual debt is written off. Importantly, the amount to be paid under the DSA will not depend on the size of the Debt but rather on the Debtors ability to pay. Under the terms of the arrangement, and provided the arrangement is honoured, the balance of any debt due is then written off. The Personal Insolvency Practitioner will be responsible for reviewing the Debtor’s position over the period of the Debt Settlement Arrangement (DSA). Any change in circumstances would involve an alteration to the terms of the DSA. It is suggested that it would be built into any arrangement that an increase in any Debtor's income would not automatically increase the payment to the Creditors. The Debtors should be entitled to substantial benefit from any increase, making this available to the wider economy. A portion may be available to the Creditors. Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has called on the Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs to clarify as to the future of the Language Commissioner. Tallaght Cancer Support Group were founded in February 2007 and have been in their new premises, at Trustus House, 1-2 Main Street, Tallaght, Dublin 24, since June of this year. Tallaght Cancer Support Group are a community based service run completely by volunteers. They are a drop in service for cancer patients, their friends and family. They provide a listening ear to anyone affected by cancer. Their support services include a Counselling Service, Holistic Therapies and Monthly Group Meetings. Tallaght Cancer Support Group are not confined to Tallaght, everyone is welcome. They are the only Cancer Support group for the South County Dublin Area

Tallaght Cancer Support Group do not have medical staff attached to their centre and they will never offer medical advice. However they have a huge amount of literature available and they work closely with local services to provide support and information to people going through cancer, such as Social Welfare, Hospitals etc. Tallaght Cancer Support Group are affliated to the Irish Cancer Society. The Sinn Féin spokesperson on Irish language and Gaeltacht Affairs was responding to a statement issued by Minister Dinny McGinley TD, indicating the Government's intention to subsume An Coimisinéir Teanga into the Office of the Ombudsman. According to Senator Ó Clochartaigh, the statement has added to the uncertainty of the future of the role and that there is little benefit to the State apparent from the move.

When I spoke to them both a little over two weeks ago they had not been consulted and I doubt a comprehensive consultation ensued with them since." Ombudsman's Office will have have control over how the Coimisinéir Teanga fulfils his or her functions. Will he for example, still be able to investigate the Ombudsmans Office itself in relation to breaches of the Official Languages Act, as he has had to do in the past."

"It is unclear also as to what this will mean for the remainder of the staff in the Office of the Coimisinéir Teanga. I understand from the statement that the staff will be merged with the Office of the Ombudsman. Does this mean that they will be based in Dublin - and if so, how will they be in a position to provide an effective service to the Coimisinéir Teanga?"

"The bottom line is that this move does not make economic, or operational sense. The Minister of State and the Minister for Public expenditure and Reform are trying to present this as part of a process of reform and improvement in Public Bodies, but this is a pretence. It is only optics on the part of an incompetent Government desperate to give the appearance of making savings. The result will be the undermining of the Official Languages Act and the crucial role that the Language Commissioner plays in its implementation."

Cllr Breeda Bonner is very pleased with the response of the Council to her motion to Clondalkin Area Committee on the issue of facilities for bicycle parking in Clondalkin.

Cllr. Bonner had pointed out that there were hardly any facilities for bicycle parking in the greater Clondalkin area stating that “As a cyclist myself, I find it very frustrating that it is nearly impossible to find a place to park your bike in Clondalkin. I try to cycle to work and to meetings and to the shops etc, but the lack of proper bicycle parking facilities makes this very difficult. I have been contacted by many residents about this issue, most recently by staff in Ronanstown Youth Service who pointed out the complete lack of bicycle parking in the North Clondalkin area.”

She continued “from Clondalkin into the city is a pleasant, relaxing cycle of half an hour or so. I have to commend the council for the priority they have given to the promotion of cycling as a real alternative to the car.”

Cllr. Bonner has raised this issue before with the council and was always disappointed with the response. However, at the recent Clondalkin Area Committee she feels that “this time it appears that funding has been sourced from the NTA who are actively trying to encourage the investment in cycling infrastructure, and the manager was able to assure me that more bicycle parking would be provided in the Clondalkin area in the very near future.”

Cllr. Bonner actively encourages “more people to get on their bikes! There has been huge investment in cycle paths and cycling really is a great form of transport. It costs nothing after the initial investment, for short journeys it’s often faster than using the car and it has the added benefit of

siMPle burglary PreVention tiPs By Ciarán O’Connell

There is no doubt burglars welcome the dark evenings that winter brings, as they increase the opportunity for their criminal activities. However, by considering some simple security measures, I’m hoping you will see how you can make it more difficult for the opportunist burglar and at the same time reduce the level of anxiety and fears within the household.

We are all beginning to realise that while perimeter security i.e. intruder alarms and CCTv cameras may act as deterrents, they do not necessarily prevent burglars from entering our homes. In fact, when we take time to think about it, we soon realise the main thing they do is tell us that somebody is already on the premises, and for many of us this has already proven to be all to late. Undoubtedly we do need intruder alarms, however, in Ireland today, and unlike anywhere else within the eU, there is an over dependency on perimeter security which often contributes to a cultural under- estimation of the importance of other worthwhile security methods.

Throughout most of continental europe and the UK the term Target Hardening is well known. This means focusing on the physical security i.e. the critical strength and resistance provided by our doors, locks, windows, and glazing. As we improve the strength of these important elements we harden the security at the main entry points of our homes, and make it more difficult for the burglar to gain entry. evidence shows that when the criminal has to spend more than a few minutes attempting to open a lock or a door, he will soon move on to find a softer target, of which you can be assured, there are hundreds located within the vicinity of your own home.

I know you may find this hard to believe but it is estimated that as many as eight houses out of ten with UPvC doors, have locks that can be penetrated in seconds. As was pointed out recently on Joe Duffy’s Liveline programme, the flaw in these locks is a major reason for our burglary epidemic. Therefore, the single most important bit of advice I can give you today is to

have these locks replaced as soon as possible with cylinders that are Safe-Secure, Anti-Bump and Anti-Pick. As there are many lowlife businesses peddling imitations it pays to be safe rather than sorry, and so when you have these installed you should insist on the cylinder manufacturer’s confirmation that all replacement cylinders meet Secure by Design standard, which is also the preferred Garda standard. Those of us unfortunate enough to have been burgled tend to take the matter of home security more seriously than those who have not, and this is resulting in an increasing demand for high-security window and door retractable grilles. While we have become accustomed to seeing these on windows, for those of us also concerned about the lack of security provided by our French or Patio Doors, security grilles are definitely worth considering. If aesthetics are an issue, it should be remembered too that when in use they can be concealed behind closed curtains or blinds (See photo). Nevertheless, when introducing high-security door grilles, great care must be given to the appointment of a permanent and adjacent location of a key, so as not to delay those needing to escape the house in the event of emergency. The Generation €uro Students’ Award challenges TY students to learn about monetary policy instruments, in particular interest rate decisions, and to simulate the role of the Governing Council of the european Central Bank (eCB) to determine the most appropriate interest rate for the euro area. The competition consists of three rounds including an online quiz, a group assignment and a presentation by the finalists to a panel at the Central Bank of Ireland. I do not normally recommend upvc doors to those thinking of having their front or back doors replaced as they are generally very weak and will seldom sustain an aggressive attack from a burglar. Increased lighting should be given major consideration and areas adjacent to the front and back doors should be well lit with sensor lighting. Time switches to provide intermittent lighting inside the house are a huge deterrent and should not only be used when you are away from the house, but also when you are indoors, with feet up and enjoying your favourite soap.

Local T.D., Minister for Children and Youth Frances Affairs, Fitzgerald TD, has launched ‘How We See It: Report of a Survey on Young People’s Body Image’. Young people from right across the country participated in this study which was carried out directly on foot of a key recommendation from Dáil na nÓg 2010 which noted the lack of national data on teenagers’ body image;

77% of participants ranking body image as important to them; 43% dissatisfied with their body-image

decided that this was an issue worth researching. Minister Fitzgerald stated: “Well done to all the young people who participated in this important survey. From meeting with young people right around the country I feel that it is representative of Irish young people in general. The Survey found that body image is a burning issue for young people in Ireland, with 77% of

participants ranking body image as important to them. 57% of the young people surveyed expressed some level of satisfaction with their body image, which means 43% were dissatisfied.” The Survey also found that almost 2 in 3 participants say they feel pressurised to look good for other people. More than half say that comparing themselves with others impacts

negatively on their body image and that body image their interferes with their participation in activities such as swimming, dating and putting photographs on Facebook. The report also contains a number of international comparisons. For example, in Australia only 32% of young people surveyed identified body image as a major concern for them

Dublin Labour MeP emer Costello, has welcomed the eU Commission proposal for a new eU Fund to provide food, clothing and essential goods to people suffering from poverty and social exclusion across europe. “Under the new eU programme, which must now be approved by MePs and Member States social affairs ministers, from 2014 the Government would be able to apply for eU funding to provide through charities and NGOs food, clothing and essential goods such as shoes and personal hygiene goods to the homeless materially-deprived persons, especially children. 85% of the funds would come from the eU and the remaining 15% from the Government.”

new adVenture book raises Funds For cHildren’s HosPital

A new children’s book is hoping to raise much-needed funds for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin. Lucan resident John Devoy decided to become involved when he heard about the shortfall in funding at the hospital and thought that a book he had written would be a good way to “help in some way.”

John is now working with the Children’s Medical and Research Foundation at the hospital to put the profits from the book, “Big Adventures in Little Harristown,” towards raising €4,000 . Four euros of the five euro price goes back to the hospital.

“They were delighted to get on board with the project,” he said, noting that the book is available at the hospital, Abtree books at the Superquinn shopping centre in Lucan, the St. Thomas and Scoil Aine of esker book fairs, and online at johndevoybooks.com. If any other schools would like to get involved that would be greatly appreciated. “I started writing books in 2010 mainly because my son was so interested in reading and I wrote a story called ‘Two Boys Get Lucky’ where he and his brother were the main characters,” he recalled. “I enjoyed the experience so much I kept on writing.”

Erasmus cuts send “wrong signal”

Several MePs have warned that if planned cuts to the erasmus exchange programme go ahead next year, it would be a “serious retrograde step” which would badly impact on disadvantaged students. The european Commission has said that if it cannot address a budgetary shortfall of €90 million, it will be forced to either reduce the number of places offered to students on the erasmus programme, or cut the level of grant aid. About 3 million european college-goers, including at least 3,000 Irish students, are currently engaged in study programmes at foreign universities under the erasmus programme for periods of between 3 and 9 months this year. Irish MeP Liam Aylward said most of the student interns in his Brussels office have availed of the erasmus programme to help kick-start their career. “If I go downtown in Brussels

Independent MeP Marian Harkin has called on europe to show its solidarity with Ireland by coming up with effective ways to ease our banking debts. She was speaking at the european Parliament in Strasbourg, where she said it was time that the eU recognised Ireland’s role in shoring up the euro. “Our banking debt of €64 billion, which Ireland put in place to save German, French and other european banks, as well as our own cannot be left on the

shoulders of Irish taxpayers. It is unjust, unfair and makes the possibility of recovery virtually impossible,” she said. The Sligo MeP who has been twice awarded “MeP of the Year” is known for her hard work, outspoken commitment and fearless sense of justice. Unafraid to call a spade a spade, she denounced what she termed as a ‘Judas kiss’ by German Chancellor Angela Merkel during the recent eU summit attended by Taoiseach enda Kenny. “Having embraced enda Kenny at the summit, Angela Merkel subsequently showed this to be a ‘Judas kiss’ when she ruled out back-dated recapitalisation of european banks,” said Ms Harkin. “Ireland took one for the team when europe badly needed it, and should Germany follow through on its apparent decision to block recapitalisation of Ireland’s legacy debt, it will sadly be a bitter blow to Irish hopes, and another nail in the coffin of european economic solidarity,” she

added.

EU must use new law to punish over-fishing

The eU Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki is being urged to implement the provisions of a new law on unsustainable fishing to crack down on the over-fishing of mackerel by Iceland and the Faroe Islands. The measures, officially signed into legislation last week, allow the eU to block these countries from exporting mackerel and white fish into europe if they continue to fish unsustainably. Irish MeP Pat the Cope Gallagher, who drafted the legislation in direct response to the crisis in the North east Atlantic’s mackerel fishery, said sanctions can now be imposed immediately against Iceland and the Faroes. “The regulation now gives Commissioner Damanaki the necessary tool to introduce hard-hitting penalties against any country engaged
