The new facility will also centralise decisionmaking with regard to commercial policy, R&D and the supply chain needs of Grifols’ Bioscience Division, which specializes in protein plasma therapies.

The company purchased an 11 hectare site from South Dublin County Council in 2012 for a fee in excess of €6 million, joining other multinationals such as Pfizer, Microsoft and Google in the West Dublin business park.

The Bioscience Division global operations centre takes up approximately 22,000 square metres of the overall Grifols site and is a result of the group’s growth strategy, with a strong emphasis on the internationalization and globalization of activities.

Minister Fitzgerald also commended South Dublin County Council on its “foresight” regarding the development of Grange Castle in recent years and the council’s ability to attract top companies.

She said: “I again want to pay tribute to South Dublin County Council describing them as innovative on their initiative and investment in Grange Castle Business Park; and in attracting and sustaining world-class facilities such as the Pfizer facility we have on our doorstep.”

Grifols also announced this week that the group’s global treasury activities, which allows Grifols to operate its own in-house bank, are to be carried out at the Grange Castle facility.

In 2014 Grifols’

Bioscience Division generated sales revenue of €2,513 million which is 75% of the group’s total net revenue.

The new Grange Castle facility is expected to

come on stream in the first half of 2016 with 140 jobs to be created once the site is fully operational while Pfizer expects to recruit for the new positions immediately.

John Curran made the comments after Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald signalled that the force is set to receive new vehicles in the coming months. however John Curran has said the media reports that these vehicles are only being used to replace the existing fleet will be met with huge frustration.

“Fine Gael and Labour seem to be finally waking up to the fact that communities across Ireland are living in fear as a result of a

massive surge in crime.

The closure of Garda stations, the downsizing of the Garda fleet and the reduction in manpower has had a detrimental impact on the force. The policies pursued by this Government have seriously undermined the ability of the Garda force to tackle crime,” said John Curran.

“Minister Fitzgerald recently re-announced funding for the Garda fleet to much fanfare.

She insisted that the force will shortly receive high powered vehicles with the purposes of tackling roaming gangs who are targeting rural areas. however the Minister failed to acknowledge that the force seriously lacks manpower, nor did she highlight that the number of Garda

vehicles nationally has fallen since the Government came to power.

“I am concerned by media reports that that a mere one in ten of the new Garda vehicles can be classed as ‘high powered’.

The vast majority of vehicles are actually family-style cars which are only suitable for day-to-day policing. They will be little use in tackling roaming gangs on our road network as the Minister suggested.

“Fine Gael and Labour have consistently stripped the Gardaí of vital resources. There is no doubt that this has made it harder for Gardaí to do their job.

For example they increased the maximum mileage for Garda vehicles from 200,000km to

300,000km. This has forced Garda cars off the road as a result of increased breakdowns.

As a result of this we have had the bizarre situation where some victims of crime have had to use their own cars to transport Gardaí to and from their stations.

“In fact, even after these new vehicles have been allocated, the size

of the Garda fleet will still be significantly than the smaller number of vehicles available to the force in 2010.

An Garda Síochána needs a significant increase in manpower and resources and not more spin from Fine Gael and Labour to hide the fact that they’ve done nothing but undermine community policing for the last four years.”

The passing of the Marriage Bill 2015 is a victory for all who believe in equality, fairness and justice, according to Independent Senator katherine Zappone.

Irish citizens have sent a powerful message of support to young members of the gay and lesbian community, but we must strive to extend the freedoms of equality to all people of the Republic.

During the Marriage Referendum, Independent Senator Zappone met more than 11,000 people in Tallaght, Rathfarnham and Templeogue during an extensive canvass by local members of the YesEquality campaign.

During this time it became clear that people in Dublin South West believe in equality and it is important that this is reflected not just in terms of marriage but across all

Government policies which impact on local families.

71.3% of Dublin South West said Yes, with tallies demonstrating that some areas in Dublin South West showed massive support for Marriage Equality, with some parts of Jobstown and killinarden voting 85% yes, areas in Fettercairn voting 88% Yes, parts of Ballyroan voting 82% Yes, and estates in Rathfarnham voting 80% Yes.

Senator Zappone added: “A quote from William Butler Yeats reads: “Change comes dropping slow.” When Ann Louise and I first imagined this change we speak of today over 13 years ago - a change for ourselves, for other LGBT people, for Ireland we never thought it would take this long. our work is now almost completed

and we have learned so many things in this length of time and the dropping slow of change.

A prime legacy of the Marriage Equality referendum is the of our experience people, especially our young people, that if you care about a cause, that if you see things that should change, that you want to change, you will know that change is possible.

This can only be a good thing for our Republic, especially as we approach the year 2016.

May the memory that this law embodies provide an ongoing touchstone for our citizens to imagine other change that is necessary to bring about a Republic of Equals for all.

I believe that the days of the 22nd and 23rd of May 2015 will go down in history as some of

Dublin South West representative Seán Crowe TD has said that a Irish Dental Association (IDA) report that suggests 10,000 children under the age of 15 are now ending up in hospitals around the country to have their teeth removed has done us all a favour.

The report blames ongoing Government cuts to the free dental care scheme and Crowe believes that a new approach is needed to end this unacceptable development.

Deputy Seán Crowe said: “The Irish Dental Association has done us all a favour with this latest report. It lays out in black and white that Government cuts to family dental supports since 2010 has been the main cause of children having to be hospitalised to have

their teeth removed.

These cuts combined with the undermining of the highly effective schools screening service and a diet containing too much sugar has meant that many of these services that should be improving are going backwards.

“The cuts are resulting in thousands of young children with chronic dental infection, many whom require of multiple extractions and are waiting up to twelve months for treatment. Figures are up to five times higher than in Britain and in many states across the European Union.

“It is unacceptable that thousands of young people are having undergo the trauma of hospitalisation for multiple dental extractions while the

“A whopping ninety five per cent of these cases would have been avoidable if they had been detected and treated earlier.

“Dental complications can lead to serious illness and disease. If the Government are serious about children and their health, it has

to ensure that dangers are minimised, not just for patient health but also for the savings this could bring to the cost of dental services provision in the longer term.

“The State provides free dental services to persons under 16 years of age. however, reductions in staff and funding have led to

cutbacks in the service and this has resulted in delays in dentist visits with many children not being seen until they are 11 or 12 years of age. Seeing a dentist for the first time at 12 years of age could be too late to stop major problems with decay and gum disease. It is tantamount to shutting the stable door after

the horse has bolted.

“The failure to provide timely screening and treatment of simple problems or early onset of dental disease causes severe deterioration which then requires more complex remedial treatments. The State services often don’t provide these and many families simply cannot afford them.

“In order to make sure children’s dental health is looked after, the free dental care programme needs to be properly resourced and funded.

This makes both immediate and long term sense for children’s dental health but also makes financial sense in the short, medium and long term for the country.”

dubLin mid-west PoLiticians FaiL to PLan For Future transPort needs

“Why have politicians on the west side of Dublin failed to provide, or even plan for the future transport needs of West Dublin?” asked Fianna Fáil General Election Candidate for Dublin Mid-West John Curran.

“The orbital transport route Metro West

linking Tallaght, Clondalkin, Lucan, Blanchardstown and North to the Airport is now not proceeding or even being planned. It is very disappointing for local commuters especially when one looks at the Governments Infrastructure and

Capital Investment Plan 2016-2021 which includes a scaled back version of the original Metro North Project.”

John Curran said: “While everyone recognises that to commence construction of this project was unlikely in the short

term, to not advance the planning process of this project is the wrong decision and shows a worrying lack of vision for public transport in Dublin West.

“Why have politicians on this side of the city failed to provide for the future transport needs

which now need to be planned for?”, asked Curran.

“Funding is being made in the new Capital Plan Building for Recovery for Metro North but there are no plans and no funding to proceed with the Metro West proposal. This is short sighted and a failure on

behalf of Dublin West commuters by our elected representatives”, said Curran “Elected representatives for Dublin Mid-West and Dublin West have sat mutely on the Government benches and allowed this project to be shelved altogether.

This decision to scrap Metro West needs to be reconsidered and allow

the planning process to proceed for this

project.

The entire potential of this project has been lost and scrapped if planning permission if not sought on this project. €18.7m in costs have already been spent on Metro West, this investment will have no value if plans for this project are progressed”, never concluded John Curran.

The price of the average three-bed semi detached house in South Co Dublin has fallen by 4.17% to €345,000 in the last three months, a nationwide property survey has found.

The Real Estate Alliance Average house Price Survey concentrates on the sale price of Ireland's typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an up-to-date

picture of the property market in towns and cities countrywide to the end of September.

According to Anthony McGee from REA McGee in Tallaght, there is a shortage of properties coming to the market in the area, with little or no investors buying and rents continuing to rise.

The average semi detached house nationally now costs €188,102, the Q3 REA Average house Price Survey has found – a slight rise on the Q2 figure of €186,968.

The average three-bed semi price rose by 0.71% to €206,676 in Tier two – the commuter counties and the larger cities over the three month period.

Prices in the rest of the country grew by 2.70% in Q3, to €120,786.

Sinn Féin Clondalkin Cllr Eoin Ó Broin has called on South Dublin County Council to ‘do more to increase the number of electric car charging points across the county.’

Cllr Ó Broin said: carbon ‘Reducing emissions is central to tackling climate change.

Local government has a key role to plan in this.

South Dublin County Council has a demonstrated commitment to play its

part by including climate change as a key element of its Environment directorate.

‘An important part of reducing carbon emissions lies in promoting greater use of electric cars.

Councils and other public bodies including ESB can assist in this by increasing the number of electric car charging points to make the choice of electric cars more viable for drivers.

‘The Council, the ESB and An Gardaí also need

to ensure that electric car charging points are properly marked and not used as car-parking spaced by petrol/diesel cars.

‘Last year I had a motion passed by Council urging the management to do more in conjunction with ESB to increase the number of charging points and to police them better.

‘Progress to date has been slow and in my view the Council need to do more to increase the number of electric

car charging points across the county.

‘In order to highlight the issue again I tabled a motion at this month’s council meeting which was

unanimously passed. I will also be tracking progress on work promised at the monthly council meetings.

‘Tackling climate

change should be one of the priorities of both local and central government. Making it easier for the public to choose carbon neutral forms of transport is

key to this. I hope in the coming year we will see a significant improvement in the number of electric car charging points in South Dublin.

The Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Councillor Sarah holland officially opened the new natural playspace at Avonbeg, Tallaght.

The opening, a celebration of community was attended by children from Scoil Santain, South Dublin County Councillors, residents and local community groups. Important among the guests were the children from the Amplifying Voices group, who worked for several years on getting a playground for Avonbeg.

Their contribution to the playspace was marked by the presentation of certificates by the Mayor and in a

speech by Fergus Finlay, CEo of Barnardos.

The playspace at Avonbeg is unique in its design, with influences from ancient Celtic monuments. It is reminiscent of ring forts with circular mounds and tall standing stones and is a very striking addition to the area.

The playspace has swings, a slide, a giant spinning disk as well as a huge sand pit and lots of hills and rocks for free play. Already the playspace has proven very popular with local children and is also loved by the pupils of Scoil Santain.

Coalition partners Fine Gael and Labour are fast becoming the Laurel and hardy of environmental regulation, with chaotic, contradictory and just plain statements wrong emanating from the government parties as they attempt to talk their way out of their shambolic nonposition on tackling climate change.

Earlier this week, Fine Gael MEP Brian hayes announced that ‘Ireland can meet 2020 emissions targets, according to the EU Commission’. hayes claimed to have been told by EU Climate Commissioner Arias Canete that, allowing for flexibility mechanisms under EU rules, “Ireland is on course to meet its (2020) obligations”.

This statement may have come as a surprise to Commissioner Canete, whose actual report stated that while the EU overall would beat its 2020 emissions targets, “the report warned that Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg and Austria

would miss the 2020 target”, according to Euractiv.

Within 48 hours of hayes’ announcement that Ireland was on target to meet its legally mandated EU emissions reductions targets, his government colleague and Environment Minister, Labour’s Alan kelly, admitted, in a newspaper interview ahead of the UN Global climate summit in Paris, that ‘it is no secret that Ireland is not going to meet the EU greenhouse emissions targets for 2020’. kelly went on to assert – incorrectly – that: “While we won’t meet the 2020 targets we are in a trajectory or a line that is going in the right direction”. Evidence from the EPA flatly contradicts kelly’s view that Ireland is “going in the right direction”. According to the EPA’s latest emissions projections report: “Ireland is not on track towards decarbonising the economy in the long term in line with the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Bill

2015 and will face steep challenges post-2020 unless polices and further measures are put in place over and above those envisaged between now and 2020.”

The chaotic double-speak being engaged in by hayes and kelly may best be explained by Taoiseach Enda kenny’s own dazed and confused performance regarding climate, an issue he has chosen not to understand.

cLondaLkin eQuine cLub ProPosaLs Goes For PubLic consuLtation

Clondalkin Equine Club welcomes the decision of South Dublin County Council to publish proposals to develop an equine facility in Ballyowen Park, Lucan.

The proposal will now go for public consultation.

Clondalkin Equine Club has been working closely with Elected Members of South Dublin County Council and Council officials over a considerable period of time with a view to developing a project which will cater for young horse owners in the area.

“We have worked hard since 2012 gaining allies and support from a wide array of other organisations and individuals nationwide,

including support from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.”

“our vision for the club is that it will be ‘A place to belong’ for young horse owners and young people with an interest in horses.

The project will promote responsible horse ownership through education and participation in the clubs activities.”

Following the public consultation process, the Elected Members of South Dublin County Council will formally decide whether to proceed with the proposed development, and it is expected that, if developed, the Equine Club will operate the facility under a Licence Agreement

with the Council.

Clondalkin Equine Club is anxious that this proposal for a horse project in Clondalkin goes ahead. They have enlisted the support of Crosscare Youth Services in Clondalkin/Ronanstown, My Lovely horse Rescue and the County Dublin Education and Training board to assist with the education and training aspect of the project.

Plans and particulars of the proposed schemes are available for inspection at County hall, Tallaght and Civic office, Clondalkin up to 26th November 2015 and submissions may be made in respect of the proposals to the Council up to 10th December 2015.

Dublin Senator Catherine Noone, has said that revenue from a sugar tax, if it is introduced, should be strictly ring-fenced to improve access to free dental care for children.

"There is no question that consumption of sugar has gone into the stratosphere and that taxing sugar is now accepted as an inevitable reality that we have to face. I believe that a sugar tax would make a real difference in the battle against obesity and it is something that I am going to continue fighting for. Such a tax was introduced in Mexico in october 2013 to combat the country’s alarming obesity problem. It proved successful with a reported 10% decline in sugary beverage consumption in the first three months of its implementation alone. “however, I don't believe that any funds raised from such a tax should simply go into general taxation. I believe that, instead, any money raised from a sugar tax should be ring-fenced to undo some of the damage that sugar does to children's teeth, and a special fund for free children's dental treatments should be created.

“Reports that every year thousands of children under the age of 15 are being admitted to hospital to have teeth removed under general anaesthetic, are very worrying. We need to work to reduce this and this should be a priority in healthcare for the next term of Government.

"I believe this is a rare opportunity to ensure that taxation is used to directly undo the harm caused by the product that is being taxed, and I hope that we can ensure that this happens when a sugar tax is introduced. All children should have access to free dental care in the same way that Fine Gael has ensured that all children under 12 will now have access to free GP care. I hope this will be a priority for the next Government."

Local Councillor Charlie o’Connor has repeated his calls for action to be taken by the Council and the Gardai in respect of criminal activity at Bohernabreena Cemetery. he was responding to concerns expressed by many visitors to Bohernabreena Cemetery who admit to feeling vulnerable when visiting their deceased loved ones.

The matter was raised on behalf of Charlie o’Connor in the Dail recently by his Party colleague Niall Collins TD, the Fianna Fail

spokesperson on Justice and Equality, who asked France Fitzgerald TD, the Minister for Justice and Equality, if she will provide additional resources to An Garda Siochana in Tallaght to take effective action in respect of the issue.

The Minister stated “I am informed by the Garda Commissioner that there have been four crime incidents of thefts from unattended vehicles recorded as having occurred at Bohernabreena Cemetery since January of this year.” She did give assurances that the area will be regularly

policed by uniform and Neighbourhood Policing Units as well as the District Detective Unit and the District Drug Unit.

According to Charlie o’Connor, the Council has previously responded to his calls by agreeing to progress proposals for the installation of a CCTV system in Bohernabreena Cemetery and they have now confirmed that this will be included in the Capital Programme 2016/2018.Council management have also stated that “it is hoped to go to tender in early 2016 for implementation the same year”.

Should i bring this up with my Employer?

In this edition of the paper, Romaine Scally Solicitor, of Romaine Scally & Company, Solicitors, Main Street, Tallaght, Dublin 24, Telephone 014599506 email legal@scally.ie deals with Accidents in the Workplace. q. i work in a warehouse and was injured recently when lifting goods from a height down on to a pallet. i will be out of work for a few weeks and my Employer is not paying me. would i have any cause of action?

A. We are sorry to hear about your accident and hope that you will go on to make a full recovery speedily.

Your Employer has a responsibility to provide you with adequate training, making you aware of the best ways to stay safe in your working environment and avoid personal injury. If you have suffered a debilitating personal injury and feel that inadequate training was directly responsible for the accident which caused your injury then, you may have a cause of action against your Employer. A detailed consultation with a Solicitor would be required to determine what training (if any) you had previously been given by your Employer. Lifting heavy goods from above head height is an action which requires training and instruction and if you were not provided with either then, it seems as if you will have a cause of action against your Employer. We would suggest that you make an appointment with a Solicitor as soon as possible.

A. Whilst accidents arising from inadequate training typically affect those employed in more dangerous industries, nonetheless, there is a potential for anyone to have an accident at work resulting from inadequate training or supervision. Whether you work in a warehouse or an office, your Employer is required to: a) Provided regular training, refresh previously taught skills and teaching new ones; b) Ensure management reinforces the need to follow correct procedures as taught during training sessions; c) Make a full assessment of each Employee’s abilities; d) Ensure that vulnerable Employees, such as pregnant women or temporary workers, are properly catered for in the working environment.

If you believe that your Employer has neglected his duty to provide you with proper training in best practice for your workplace, then you should bring this up with your immediate supervisor and express your concerns. From what you have said, these appear to be perfectly legitimate concerns and indeed, you will be helping your Employer in bringing this to his attention and requesting training for all the staff. If you are met with resistance then you should take the matter further with a more Senior Member of Management although hopefully, there should be no need to take the matter up with the health & Safety Authority. hopefully, your employers will see reason and welcome your suggestions and put proper training in place. q. i have worked with my present Employer for over 12 years. i work in a very noisy environment and now find

that my hearing has been affected. i think that this could be directly related to my working environment. is there anything i can do?

A. The Noise at Work Regulations in Ireland state that Employers are obliged to provide Employees with the correct protective equipment to prevent injury or illness. Therefore, if you feel that you have been the victim of hearing problems due to Industrial Deafness, it is possible that your employer is at fault. There are a variety of working environments that can cause or contribute towards hearing loss with some of the most common including a) factories, b) building sites, c) nightclubs and bars, d) military service, e) transport workers i.e. planes and trains.

Employees who work in noisy working environments, such as the ones described above, will be at risk of suffering from Industrial Deafness. Because this is a known risk, their Employers should do everything in their power to reduce the possibility of hearing damage. This should include providing ear protectors and minimising the level of exposure as far as possible. This is all part and parcel of an Employer’s duty of care which means that he or she must look after the health & Safety of staff while they are at work. If your Employer does not meet this obligation, and you have been the victim of a hearing problem because of your workplace then, you will have been wrongfully injured. This means that you may be in a position to make a deafness claim against your Employer. You will however need to go to your doctor first and arrange for him or her to have you referred to a specialist in hearing problems.

The Specialist should be briefed by you in relation to your working environment and should hopefully be able to make an assessment as to the cause of your deafness. With this information, you should be in a positon to properly brief a Solicitor in relation to a possible claim against your Employer. We wish you the best of luck in this regard. q. i fell off scaffolding at work recently and spent a week in hospital.

My Employer has been paying me while i am out of work and i hope to be able to go back to work within the next two months. i am wondering however whether i might have a claim.

A. This was a most unfortunate accident and in many cases, unnecessary.

Certainly the Building Industry can be a dangerous environment for both workers and the public. Scaffolding accidents have an impact on a variety of trades such as bricklayers, electricians, painters and miners. The health & Safety Executive has found that 72% of employees who suffer from scaffolding accidents said that it was due to planking giving way, slipping or being struck by a falling objects.

Members of the public can also be harmed by falling object. however, Employers must ensure that their staff and members of the public are protected against the threat of the scaffolding accident. There is a legal duty to provide Employees with hard hats and other personal protective equipment, keeping walkways free from obstacles and ensuring that everyone on site has the necessary training.

Unfortunately however, some Employers do not comply with the necessary regulations, putting their Employees at risk. If an accident subsequently occurs, and a member of staff sustained an injury as a result of those breaches then, the Employer will be held responsible. In those circumstances, you will be able to claim compensation for the injuries you have wrongfully experienced. Scaffolding accidents can often lead to serious damage as it is often the case that Employees have fallen from a height.

There can be long-term financial problems for Employees in these situations and it is very important to take legal advice early.

Very often, these scaffolding compensation claims occur due to insecure bracing, poor construction materials and lack of attention to safety procedures. however, this list is not exhaustive and it is important to arrange a consultation with a Solicitor as soon as you are well enough to describe your working environment and prepare a case for compensation. on Monday october 19th Independent Senator katherine Zappone spoke at the launch of ‘Defying Gravity’, an animated film about the story of the Childhood Development Initiative.

The film was screened at the IMC Cinema in the Square Town Centre.

Marian Quinn, CEo of the CDI was also in

attendance, as well as other CDI staff and a number of children and parents who have benefited from the services that they provide. The film is a story of the founding and development of the organisation, 'how one community used science and spirit to make their dream a reality.'

Two of the county’s best young entrepreneurs have won a total investment of €30,000 through the Local Enterprise office South Dublin, as part of the €2 million Ireland’s Young Best Entrepreneur competition (#IBYE).

Aimed at young and aspiring entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 30, Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur competition is an integral part of the Action Plan for Jobs and is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through the network of 31 Local

Enterprise offices.

At a ceremony in South Dublin Local Enterprise office on october 7th, awards were made for South Dublin’s best start-up and best new idea as well as an overall award for the best young entrepreneur in the county.

We have excellent start-ups and in entrepreneurs Ireland – we just don’t have enough of them. It is great to see so many excellent entrepreneurs and business-people getting involved in this competition, and I am delighted to congratulate the local winners. I wish all three winners every success in the later stages of the competition – and wish all participants every success as they grow their businesses and contribute to the job-creation we need”.

Mayor Sarah holland congratulated all the finalists on reaching the final, and complemented them on their very strong business ideas and

significant entrepreneurial ability.

She said that “in the Local Enterprise office, South Dublin, we aim to develop and foster a culture of entrepreneurship within our county.” The Mayor also wished our winners well in the Dublin Regional Final on 4th November.

Speaking at the ceremony, Colm Ward, head of Enterprise from the Local Enterprise office South Dublin paid tribute to all the

young entrepreneurs in the region, saying: “As the first stop shop for entrepreneurs and small businesses, it is heartening to see a growing and vibrant community of young entrepreneurs locally.

Through Business Bootcamps, mentoring and general business advice, the Local Enterprise office plays a vital role in supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs, on a year-round basis. We

will also be working closely with this year’s IBYE winners, to help maximise the return on the €30,000 investment that they have been awarded.”

Mayor Sarah holland will officially launch South Dublin County Council Social Inclusion Week on Monday 16 November 2015 at 12.00 noon in County hall, Tallaght, with special guest Ruth Scott, RTÉ 2 FM Radio Presenter. The launch of Social Inclusion Week will be followed by the launch of the 55 plus Active County Wide Booklet.

The aim of the week is to highlight the positive work carried out by South Dublin County Council and other

agencies to reduce social exclusion and poverty, and to an promote understanding of social inclusion and diversity in the county.

This year marks the 10th Anniversary of South Dublin’s annual Social Inclusion Week, which has been running each November since 2006. Each year there has been a steady growth of strategic partners in the community and other agencies, increasing the level of participation and the quality of events. The number of

groups and communities engaging with the event has increased dramatically.

“Social Inclusion is the process which ensures that those at risk of poverty and social exclusion gain the opportunities and resources necessary to participate fully in economic, social and cultural life and to enjoy a standard of living and well-being that is considered normal in the society in which they live” (Joint Report by the Commission and the Council on Social

Inclusion, office for official Publications of the European Union).

South Dublin County Council plays a key role in the direct delivery of social inclusion actions, programmes and supports to the communities.

Social Inclusion Week provides us with the platform to highlight social inclusion initiatives and promote active citizenship.

Social Inclusion is about creating a society where everyone experiences full and equal participation in

all aspects of life.

Social Inclusion is “Everyone’s Business”.

7 STRATEGiES To SATiSFY HunGER AnD LoSE wEiGHT

overview: how do you now when you’re through eating dinner? The answer might seem obvious. After all, doesn’t everyone put the plate away when they are full? Well no, the leanest people do, according to scientists, but people who are over weight rely more on what are known as cues” for “external example, guys packing a few extra pounds tend to stop eating when: 1. Their plates are clean.

2. Everyone else in their group is finished.

3. The TV show they’re watching is over.

Unfortunately, these cues have nothing to do with how they feel physically.

People’s brains are often out of touch with their bodies. And when eating becomes mindless, over eating becomes routine.

The key player in all of this appears to be a region of the brain called the left posterior amygdale, or LPA. This area monitors the volume of food in your stomach during a meal. Fill your gut to a comfortable

level, and the LPA in your brain tells your body to stop the trouble is it delivers that information at a slower speed than we need it.

Many people consume calories faster than their bodies can say “stop!” so they look to external cues to guide there consumption.

The bottom line in all this is: to shrink your gut, you need to start listening to it.

Simple strategies and you’ll fill up without filling out.

1. Sit down to snack: turns out, the trappings of a formal meal make you think your eating more than you actually are and that may boost satiety levels. A 2006 Canadian study found that when people ate lunch while sitting at set table, they consumed a third less at a later snack than those who ate their midday meals while standing at the counter.

Think of it as the Zen of eating, “if you treat every dining experience with greater respect, you’ll be less likely to use your fork as a shovel,” says sports nutritionist and behavioural psychotherapist Lisa Dorfman, M.S, R.D. “And

that includes snacks as well as your three square meals.”

2. Turn off the telly: university of Massachusetts researchers found that people who watched TV during a meal consumed 288 more calories on average than those who didn’t. The reason: what you’re seeing on television distracts you, which keeps your brain from recognizing that you’re full.

3. Slow down and savour: “pay close attention to those first 3 bites, which people usually wolf down with excitement,” says Jeffrey Greeson, PhD, a health psychologist. In act mimic a food critic: “examine the foods texture, savour the flavours in your mouth, and pay attention to the swallow,” he says.

“Psychologically, this form of meditative eating boosts satiety and promotes a sense of satisfaction for the meal,”

While you’re at it, try spicing up relatively blend fare, such as scrambled eggs, with hot sauce or smoked paprika, hot, flavourful foods help trigger your brain to realize your

eating.

4. Take a bite, take a breath: researchers discovered that consciously slowing down between bites decreases a person’s calorie intake by 10 percent.

Concentrating on breathing helps you, gauge how hungry you are, since it directs your mind toward your body. It’s also quite practical, since you can do it throughout a meal and not draw attention to yourself in a social situation.

5. Don’t share your food: researchers at the state university of New York observed that men who ate with a group of buddies downed 60 percent more calories than when they ate with a spouse or girlfriend.

That’s because people often match their intake of food to that their dinning partners.

Dublin Senator Catherine Noone, has said that a recently leaked Uk health committee study, which highlighted the need to introduce a sugar tax, also contains other health policy lessons for Ireland which should be heeded.

“The report makes eight recommendations, all of which are very specific and prescriptive by their nature. These measures include forcing food manufacturers to reduce portion sizes, as well as the introduction of a sugar tax and some specific restrictions on advertising.

“The obesity epidemic has yet to be truly tackled through any specific budgetary measure, and I believe this is a shame. I believe it’s time we had a cohesive, holistic focus on this matter, perhaps going as far as having a Junior Minister devoted to the matter in the next term. This is going to be the healthcare battle of the next decade, and I believe that we need somebody whose sole focus is on working to prevent it.

"There is no question that consumption of sugar has gone into the stratosphere and that taxing sugar is now accepted as an inevitable reality that we have to face. I believe that a sugar tax would make a real difference in the battle against obesity and it is something that I am going to continue fighting for. Such a tax was introduced in Mexico in october 2013 to combat the country’s alarming obesity problem. It proved successful with a reported 10% decline in sugary beverage consumption in the first three months of its implementation alone.

Although not traditionally recognised as a family holiday halloween is one of best times to get everyone together and celebrate all things scary.

It is an ideal opportunity to stay in, curl up and hide behind the sofa while watching classic horror flicks or entertaining family movies.

In this edition we take a look at the Top Five Films to watch this halloween – but be warned, we don’t recommend watching them alone…

1. hocus Pocus – Probably the most well-known (and best) halloween family movie there is. If you have plans to stay home with the kids then be sure to get your hands on a copy of this film.

3. Beetlejuice – Some of your favourite hollywood actors as you have never seen them before. Winona Ryder, Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin are the epitome of darkly funny in the innovative and way ahead of its time comedy horror.

Michael keaton gives what is arguably his greatest ever performance as Beetlejuice who takes advantage of the undead and the unsuspecting living!

More than 30 years after his introduction to the world Freddy krueger still haunts both young and old as the serial killer who strikes in people’s dreams. Although the special effects are somewhat questionable this movie is a timeless horror classic. Don’t watch it before you head to bed!
