Responding to RTE report that the final cost of modular homes in Dublin could be €243,000, Sinn Féin TD Eoin Ó Broin has said that it is simply staggering to see just how badly the Department of the and Environment Minister Alan Kelly got it wrong. His comments come after reports emerge this evening that Dublin City Council has sought an

additional €500,000 on top of the initial figure of €4,700,000 to pay for an order of 21 units that were meant to be completed in January this year. The unit price would now stand at €243,000.

The Dublin Mid-West TD said: “Reports have emerged tonight that Dublin City Council requested an additional €500,000 in addition to the initial contract cost

of €4,700,000 for the provision of the modular housing units that were meant to be completed in January of this year. This means that the 21 units could end up costing €243,000 apiece.

This is substantially more than councils would pay to purchase existing housing stock. This has been nothing but an expensive PR exercise.

“It is staggering to see just how badly the

Department of the Environment and Minister Alan Kelly got it wrong when it came to modular housing. Far from being a low-cost, speedy alternative to building housing, modular housing has turned into a fiasco.

The Minister and his officials have sold the Council and the people a pup, plain and simple.

“Sinn Féin is not opposed to modular housing as a short term alternative to unsuitable hotel and B&B accommodation for homeless families.

However, if the final cost of the Dublin City modular units is over €200,000, the question has to be asked why the Minister didn’t allow the Council to buy already built homes at the same price and provide people with permanent homes.

“The only solution to the housing crisis is for Councils to be given the funds to build and buy social and affordable housing. Sinn Féin launched a document before Christmas that identified how 100,000 units could be built over the course of two Dáil terms.”

In line with the National Payments Plan, the Department of Social Protection is seeking to reduce cheque usage in the economy. Casuals workers have to date been paid by cheque, which they can lodge direct to their accounts or negotiate at bank or post office counters.

The majority of the Department’s customers who are paid by cheque choose to lodge them direct to their bank accounts.

The Department is now offering these customers the option of being paid direct to their bank accounts.

There has been a very positive response from our customers to the option of this payment method.

Cheque payments are not issued to An Post or through the Post Office and as such do not reduce the number of existing cash payments made through Post Offices under the contract between the Department of Social Protection and An Post.

The option to move from cheque to direct payment to a bank account is entirely consistent with the National Payments Plan and is in line with payment methods that now prevail across the economy.

The Department must consider the most

efficient payment method for its customers who are in employment, most of whom get their salary payment into bank accounts.

To have weekly income (work plus welfare) payable in two different ways is a highly inconvenient and costly way of dealing with people in employment.

The Department’s focus must be on its customers.

In respect of working groups arising from the “Kerr” Report, the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources is actively working with An Post and others to set out a clear implementation plan for all of the actions in the Kerr Report.

The report clearly sets out the challenges that An Post and Postmasters face as they ensure that the network remains relevant in the context of an inexorable shift in consumer preferences, including the trend towards digital transactions.

The Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources anticipates that this work will take no more than 6 months.

The Department of Social Protection is engaging with this process.

€3.7M boost for irish lanGuaGe

Dublin Fine Gael MEP, Brian Hayes has welcomed a European Parliament budget vote in favour of earmarking €3.7 million for the Irish language.

"The vote follows the decision of the Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs, Joe McHugh, to phase out the existing EU derogation on the Irish language by the end of 2021.

"It is very important

that Irish has full working status in the EU and an improved level of services for those who use our native language. The funding will enable the Parliament employ more Irish language speakers and provide extra Irish-language services.

"A number of measures have already been taken by the Government to increase the number of university graduates

from Ireland with the required Irish language skills to work in the EU institutions.

"There will be a significant increase in the number of Parliament's Irish language staff from next year – namely translators and lawyerlinguists to deal with the increasing workload of documents that will be translated into Irish," concluded MEP Hayes.

Census iGnores hoMeless rouGh sleepers

In our issue of 4th April 2016, we published an article about the census and homeless rough sleepers. In response to the article The Dublin Region Homeless Executive have asked us to point out the following:

l A number of Rough Sleeping Counts will take place on the night of the Census nationally (April 24th 2016). l The Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE) is responsible for the delivery of rough sleeping counts in Dublin. The has developed an DRHE extensive methodological approach that is tried and tested and that has succeeded in the delivery of consecutive rough sleeper counts in Dublin

each spring and winter since 2007. l DRHE have advised each local authority outside Dublin on the agreed methodology and process required to ensure a common approach to enumeration is delivered across these local authorities and have issued detailed guidance on same.

DRHE continues to support these local authorities in their preparation ahead of Census night. l CSO staff will participate in the rough sleeping counts in Dublin and Cork as volunteers. l Post each rough sleeping count, the number of rough sleepers will be communicated to CSO along with base-line profile data for rough sleepers

The Union of Students in Ireland has praised the Irish Muslim leaders who made an antiextremism declaration in Trinity College.

USI said extremism is most damaging to the young and impressionable, and violence in the name of religion has cast a negative shadow and false stereotype on peaceful Muslims.

“The discrimination and stereotypes faced by foreign nationals and Muslims because of extremists is unfair, unjust and largely unfounded, as can be seen in shocking documentaries like RTE’s I Am Immigrant” Kevin Donoghue, USI President, said.

“Ireland will only be in a position to tackle this kind of extremism if we become a more tolerant society. One of the ways we can do that is by accepting more refugees affected by these kinds of conflicts. The actions of a tiny majority have cast a terrible shadow over the lives of the vast majority of Muslims. The Union of Students in Ireland is applauding the Irish Muslim leaders for their anti-extremism declaration. Extremism is most damaging to the young, impressionable and those most susceptible to being morally misdirected. It is a shame that the Muslim leaders feel the need to

speak out against extremism and violence, to disassociate themselves from it and to guide Muslims in a different, peaceful direction.”

The Muslim anti-extremism declaration was drawn up to ensure that all visiting Islamic speakers to Ireland preach in a respectful and peaceful way. The declaration was officially launched at Trinity College last Thursday, and was signed by Muslim speaker Shaykh Fakhruddin Owaisi, chairman of the Council of Sunni Imams in Cape Town.

Shaykh Dr Umar Al-Qadri, chairman of the Irish Muslim Peace and Integration Council (Impic) and Shaykh Owaisi were speakers at the Trinity college seminar ‘Preventing radicalisation within the Muslim community’ held to coincide with the launch of the declaration.

The anti-extremist declaration was drawn up by Impic and it states: “I unequivocally reject, disown and condemn all terrorism committed in the name of Islam by any militant group . . . I believe that terrorism is never a legitimate and honourable act of war, but is always a cowardly act of indiscriminate murder. I believe that the sanctity of human life overrides the sanctity of religious laws.”

The Defence Forces are to recruit 1450 new personnel over the next two years – the move has been welcomed

“This latest recruitment campaign will see just over 600 new personal inducted to the Force this year, and a further 850 personnel next year,” Lawlor explained.

“This is good news for people in Tallaght who are seeking a fulfilling career which is challenging, offers clear paths to progress and is rooted in public service,” the Councillor added.

“This year’s campaign will specifically target increased female recruitment using social media channels, digital advertisements and the introduction information programs for women,” he went on to say.

“Just over 6% of Defence Forces personnel are women and the Government has pledged to increase female participation at all ranks.”

It is also proposed to continue with outreach initiatives established in 2014/2015 which seeks to engage with minority communities and new citizens. These measures include Defence Forces presence at citizenship days and direct contact with community groups in order to raise awareness of the Defence Forces and highlight career opportunities. Initiatives established in 2014/2015 continue to develop through active engagement with organisations such as GLEN (Gay, Lesbian, Equality Network) in order to promote the Defence Forces as an employer.

“The Defence Forces is committed to full equality among all its personnel, irrespective of gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Speaking in Dáil Eireann on the Housing Crisis, Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin Mid-West, John Curran called for an allparty national housing strategy which would go beyond the lifetime of this Dáil and put an end to the political titfor-tat that is now a housing emergency.

Speaking in Dáil Eireann, Deputy Curran said: “In order to give housing the urgency and direction it requires a Minister for Housing is essential and flowing from that an all-party committee on housing should be established to adopt an national all-party housing strategy, which would go far beyond the lifetime of this Dáil.

This should provide a better defined approach for the future, that would serve the people who elected us,” said John Curran.

John Curran said, “I would like our housing crisis to be acknowledged as a housing emergency, not because it is a play on words but because it would lend urgency to the response that is required.

That urgency requires both short-term and long-term measures.

Deputy Curran commented on the lack of housing rights within our constitution: “There are constitutional challenges in respect of housing. It is time there was a re balancing of the Constitution in the context of property rights. We should, as an Oireachtas, consider a

proper wording to bring to the people on a right to housing.

A right to housing does not mean a key to a free house, but it should underpin reasonableness and proportionate responses in what we do. If we went no further than putting that on the agenda and advancing that as a meaningful, all-party approach, that would have a significant impact on housing and homelessness and the approach and steps taken by the next Government and future Governments,” concluded Deputy Curran.

Bristol-Myers Squibb and NIBRT Launch €1M Collaboration

Bristol-Myers Squibb have announced a collaboration with the National Institute of Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) in Dublin to establish a process science and technology laboratory that will strengthen productivity of manufacturing processes for biologicals. The lab will house a team of 12 Bristol-Myers Squibb scientists who will complex advance bioprocesses used to produce BMS’s biologics products and benefit from close collaboration with the scientific staff at the NIBRT. The laboratory is expected to be operational by June 2016.

The Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan T.D.,has announced improvements to the student grant scheme for 2016/17.

The Minister’s announcement coincides with SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland) opening its online application system for grant applications for the 2016/17 academic year.

This year’s scheme opened more than two weeks earlier than last year. This represents the earliest ever opening of the scheme.

Minister O’Sullivan said: “The earlier opening date is positive news for students. It should lead to earlier decisions in respect of those students who submit their applications before the priority closing dates. In this regard I would encourage all prospective students to

visit the SUSI website and review the eligibility criteria for student grant funding.

Students who believe that they may be entitled to grant support should submit their applications before the priority closing dates so that they can benefit from earlier decisions and grant support”.

This year’s scheme includes a number of improvements that are consistent with the National Plan for Equity of Access to Higher Education 2015–2019.

students who do not complete their programme in higher education to return to either further or higher education, after a break of five years, without incurring any financial penalties. In previous years students who returned to further education having failed to complete a higher

education course were penalised if they subsequently returned to higher education”.

The new scheme also provides the first increase in more than 15 years in the amount of holiday earnings that students can exclude from their reckonable income for grant assessment purposes.

This threshold has been increased from €3,809 to €4,500 for the 2016/17 student grant scheme.

Minister O Sullivan welcomed the opening of the new scheme and pointed to a wider review of the legislation that underpins the student support area: “The

improvements in the student support scheme for 2016 will assist in widening participation in higher education in line with the objectives of the National Access Plan. My Department is also about to initiate a review of the Student Support Act, which is now 5 years old. This will ensure that the

legislation in this area is reflective of the many changes that have taken place in Irish society since 2011”.

At South Dublin County Councils monthly meeting, the Mayor Cllr Sarah Holland raised the issue of empty NAMA units as a solution to the housing crisis.

The housing team outlined that 591 units were suitable for social housing in the South Dublin County area, of which sales were almost complete on 131.

With almost 9,000 waiting on homes, these units are a drop in the ocean.

Cllr Holland said “We have previously bought Tallaght Cross from NAMA, and this helped somewhat in getting families out of hotels and more suitable into accommodation. There is a

lengthy waiting list for these, and the apartments themselves are regarded as just a temporary measure to give families time to find rented private accommodation.

South Dublin County Housing team are exhausting every avenue available to them to deal with this crisis, but we need the incoming Government change policy – to mismanagement at the top has left us in dire straits.

The only way to alleviate the housing crisis is to build.

We need to replenish our housing stock.

There is a huge overreliance on private rented

accommodation, which without rent controls, leaves landlords free to wring every penny out of renters and is in short supply.”

The motion was entered after it emerged that vulture funds had bought a number of units in Blanchardstown, and had promptly tried to evict over 100 tenants.

Cllr Holland went on to say “NAMA have been tasked with getting the best prices for these loans. In my opinion, we need to strengthen the social clauses to ensure that local authorities are given first refusal.”

Massive crowds turned up last weekend at Murphys Liquidation Furniture, 27 Broomhill Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24 as they celebrated their 2nd birthday with a €120,000 voucher giveaway for the whole weekend. Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr Sarah Holland, has highlighted the hidden epidemic of food poverty in Ireland.

She said “One in ten people in Ireland suffer from food poverty, and this is across every demographic.Those most affected are the unemployed, ill or disabled and lone parents, but increasing numbers of visitors to foodbanks are working.”

Citing the Combat Poverty, European Anti Poverty Network and Safefood EU reports, Cllr Holland said “Demand for food banks is increasing, with Crosscare and Bia Food having to expand their operations across urban centres in Ireland.

8% of Irish people overall live in consistent poverty, a rate which doubled between 2008 and 2014.

Anecdotally, I have heard of parents unable to send their kids to school because they had no packed

lunch to give them, and many kids are turning up at school without breakfast.”

Cllr Holland went on to say “How are parents in these vulnerable demographics supposed to give their kids a warm winter coat, or good shoes, if they can’t even afford to give them a roast dinner once a week?

The cost of living in Ireland is scandalously high school uniforms and voluntary donations, astronomical rents and childcare costs and a lack of social supports for those who need them mean the divide between rich and poor is widening, and becoming normalised.

Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, propped up by Labour, have been at the helm here for nearly 100 years.

Whilst we wait on them finishing their dance, nothing is being done to address the social inequalities they have helped create.

It is time for them to step up to the plate.”

blue skies initiatiVe

A Clondalkin organisation which offers free classes and supports for families and children is calling on people to get involved with the service.

The Blue Skies Initiative has been running in West Dublin since September 2014 and has engaged with over 300 parents and children during that time.

The Clondalkin-based group currently runs the comprehensive UpTo2 programme as well as a number of Early Years initiatives and also works with national schools carrying out training for Speech and Language Support Programmes and Incredible Years Teacher Classroom Management strategies.

The aim of the Blue Skies Initiative is to improve the overall well-being of children and families in the area by using evidenced based programmes which will assist parents in helping their toddlers hit developmental milestones.

Project Coordinator Lorraine Doherty said: “Early childhood is very important in a child’s development. The ABC Blue Skies Initiative aims to embed evidence based programmes in the local community that benefits the overall well-being of all children in the area.

“Training and support for Public Health Nurses, Community Centre staff, parents, Early Years educators, teachers and SNA’s will ensure that a sustainable framework will exist that will help all children reach their full potential.”

The UpTo2 programme, which is designed to help guide pregnant mothers in their role as a new

parent, offers supports from pre-birth until the baby reaches two years of age and is run in partnership with HSE Public Health Nurses, Deansrath Family Centre and Archways.

Delivered by Public Health Nurses, the programme covers preparation for the arrival, Incredible Years Parent & Baby Programme, baby massage, first aid, weaning/feeding, sleeping and crying routines as well as a wide range of other insights and advice for expectant mothers.

The Blue Skies Initiative also delivers an Early Years Programme locally and has trained 49 teachers from Clondalkin and Lucan to deliver the Incredible Years Classroom Dina Programme or Small Group Dina Programme which strengthens children’s social, emotional and academic competencies such as understanding and communicating feelings, using effective problem solving strategies, managing anger, practicing friendship and conversational skills, as well as appropriate classroom behaviours.

Local schools including St. Bernadette’s JNS, St. Mary’s JNS, St. Peter Apostles JNS, Divine Mercy JNS, Lucan CNS, Scoil Nano Nagle, St. Ronan’s National School and Clonburris National School are currently involved with the programme.

“The death of Portuguese mixed martial arts fighter Joao Carvalho after a fight in Dublin, highlights the real dangers of this extreme sport and the need for regulation.

“I was pleased to hear Sport Ireland CEO John Treacy say this morning that Mixed Martial Arts has no place in the country unless the sport implements rules and guidelines that Sport Ireland are going to bring forward.

“I fully support his views and hope that these regulatory guidelines and codes of practice are produced as soon as possible and strictly followed by the sport. If this happens I would hope that any future serious injury or death could be avoided.”

Unknown to him, there were broken bottles in the long grass and he sustained a very nasty cut of his thumb. the doctors are unsure as to whether or not he will get the full movement back in his thumb. Would i be able to make any claim?

Q. i was walking down to the shops recently and had to walk over the rubble of a wall of a house which had clearly been blown down in one of the recent storms. i fell on the rubble and injured my left ankle. Would i have any claim?

A. We are sorry to hear of your accident and hope that you go on to make a full and speedy recovery. With regard to a claim, you may indeed have a claim but it will be against the householder. In other words, the people who own the house are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of their wall, assuming that it is indeed their wall and, as such, it is their responsibility to ensure the safety of passersby if their wall falls down.

Surprisingly, most householders do have insurance to cover these types of accidents, sometimes unknown to themselves. This is assuming that they do of course have household insurance but most people with mortgages will have insurance cover. As such, you will need to notify the householder as soon as possible.

You should consider calling by and explaining what has happened. You should take photographs of the rubble in the event that it is cleared up before you get a chance to record the damage. It is worth asking the householder if they do have insurance cover and advise that, because of your injuries, you are left with no alternative but to sue for personal injuries.

After that, when you have the name and address of the householder, you should attend with a Solicitor to give detailed instructions. We wish you the best of luck.

A. This was a very nasty injury indeed. The thumb is the most important finger on the hand and any injury to the thumb is regarded as being very serious indeed.

I hope that the prognosis improves with time.

With regard to a claim, it is certainly worth investigating the possibility of bringing a claim, particularly in circumstances where the injury is a serious one. You say that the football pitch is owned by the local authority. As such, you should immediately contact the local authority and record the accident to your son.

You should then take photographs of the pitch and, in particular, the area where the broken glass lay concealed. You should have a good claim on behalf of your son if it transpires that the pitch was not properly maintained. In due course, once you attend with a Solicitor and give particulars, it will be necessary to seek the records from the local authority to ascertain how often the pitch is maintained. If they failed to carry out regular maintenance by way of keeping the grass cut, etc. then, they are certainly at risk of being found responsible for your son’s accident.

We would certainly urge you to attend with a Solicitor as soon as possible to take instructions but you should notify the local authority of the accident first by ringing them and asking them for their maintenance section. We wish you the best of luck.

Q. i was shopping with my mother in a shopping centre recently when my mother slipped on what looked to be spilt lemonade. it was impossible to see the liquid as the floor surface is very shiny. She injured herself quite badly and had to be taken by ambulance to hospital. thankfully, nothing was broken but she was very badly shaken.

Would we have any claim?

A. This was a very unfortunate accident and one which your mother probably could not have avoided, given the combination of a clear liquid on a shiny surface. As to whether or not your mother has a claim, this will depend on some extent to the cleaning records of the shopping centre. Most centres employ

cleaners whose job it is to patrol all the floors of the shopping centre according to a strict timetable. If you decide to pursue a claim, your Solicitor will request copies of these cleaning records to see whether or not there was any gap in the cleaning regime and, if so, this might explain the split liquid on the floor which obviously went unnoticed. It may be that a member of the cleaning staff was out sick that day or any other reason why the cleaning was not properly carried out.

This is a matter for your Solicitor and we would urge you to make contact with a Solicitor as soon as possible with a view to discussing a claim. We wish you the best of luck.

Q. i brought my elderly mother on a weekend away to a hotel in Galway for Easter. Unfortunately, my mother fell while she was getting out of the bath and had to be taken by ambulance to Galway Hospital. although nothing was broken, she was extremely shaken and i was very upset for her as she is in her early eighties and is now afraid to go out and certainly is unlikely to come away with me again?

A. This was a terrible accident to happen to your mother. Certainly, any accident like this to an elderly person can shake their confidence badly and affect their quality of life going forward. As to whether or not your mother has a claim, this will depend on the circumstances of the accident and the aides which were available in or around the bath to assist all users in getting in and out safely.

Firstly, any Solicitor will ask your Mother whether or not there was a mat at the bottom of the bath? In addition, where there any grip handles to allow any user to support themselves while getting in and out of the bath. Was the bath fairly high up off the ground resulting in your mother having to manoeuvre herself with some difficulty into the bath? Was there an option of a shower?

All of these questions would have to be answered and we would suggest that you either bring your mother to a Solicitor for a consultation if she is able for it or alternatively, attend yourself and give as many details as you can. I assume that you were sharing the room with your mother and, as such, you will be able to describe the bathroom in detail. Many of the older bathrooms in hotels do fall short in terms of health and safety and, as a result, do expose patrons in general to a risk of quite serious injury. Given the fact that your mother’s recovery may be very slow indeed from such an accident, it would be very important to take legal advice on whether or not a claim exists on behalf of your mother.

Q. i was eating a sandwich which i had bought in the local supermarket at lunchtime recently and suddenly, i felt a terrible pain in my mouth. i spat out what was in my mouth and found a staple. Unfortunately, it has damaged one of my teeth and my dentist said that i will need an expensive repair job, probably a crown. this is likely to cost about €400 and might have to be replaced in the future. in addition, it will require time off work to have the work done, not to mention the fact that i would prefer not to have it done at all as i am terrified of dentists. Would i have a claim?

A. This was a very unfortunate accident and is very clearly a breach of health and safety by the supermarket selling you the sandwich. You most certainly do have a cause of action against both the retailer of the sandwich and the people responsible for making it. You will know yourself whether or not the sandwich was made on the premises in the supermarket or whether you picked up one of the readymade sandwiches sold by the supermarket but made elsewhere.

Either way, you will have a cause of action. The most important thing is to notify the shop of the problem so that they will have the opportunity to make a note of it and check their procedures.

Hopefully you have kept the offending object as it will be important for the supermarket or maker of the sandwich to look through their work practices and establish exactly how the staple got into the sandwich. Most shops and commercial kitchens now enforce rigorous standards of health and safety but, as always, mistakes are made but they will need to trace the staple back to a breakdown in their procedures.

Firstly, therefore you should make a complaint to the shop directly and although you should show the staple to them, you should hold on to it for the time being.

You should then attend with a Solicitor with a view to commencing an action arising from the damage. This action will include not only the cost of the repair work, but also damages for personal injuries arising from the sheer inconvenience of having to have the work done in the first place, together with the pain which you will go through during the treatment. In addition, you should also be paid for any necessary time off work which will be required to carry out the treatment.

Brian Hayes, Fine Gael MEP, said that in light of the new EU VAT rules proposed by the European Commission, the government should permanently reduce the VAT

rate on the construction of new homes and apartments to 9%.

"The European Commission launched a new Action Plan for VAT reform which set out

options to give Member States greater flexibility in setting VAT rates. EU VAT rules have limited Ireland in the past from reducing rates in certain areas.

Whatever the outcome of the new EU VAT regime, I believe it is in Ireland's interest to ensure that favourable rules are in place so that we can meet housing demands.

"The VAT rate was reduced to 9% in the tourism sector in 2011; this was a hugely successful development and there has since been over 30,000 jobs added to our tourism industry."

Roisin O’Connor (15) became one of the 1st generation of Black Belts at Elite Karate Academy at a grading held on 1st of April 2016. In an open grading in front of family, friends and fellow students, Roisin went through an entire syllabus involving single techniques, combinations, partner work and kata (pre-arranged forms).

Every year 1000’s of men woman and children start a journey in the martial arts, with only an elite few making it to 1st Dan level. Having trained in Wado Ryu (The Way of Harmony) Karate-do for over 6 years, Roisin showed the poise, grace, power and humility of a true warrior, and now joins a linage of black belts, four steps removed from the founder of the style in 1922. Her instructor Sensei Gareth FitzGerald says, “Roisin has shown a passion and commitment over the years that belies her age, she has been on a journey to discovery her true potential beyond fear, pain or ego, she embodies all the characteristics of a martial artist, It is my honour to call her my student.”

RSA STUDY GETS MICHELIN SUPPORT

Tyre manufacturer Michelin is supporting the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and its efforts to raise public awareness of the importance of tyre safety.In an analysis by RSA of fatal road accidents occurring in Ireland between 2008 and 2012 just published, defective tyres were identified as the largest single ‘vehicle factor’ involved.

Having inspected tens of thousands of cars, Michelin found that, on average, 57% of those checked had underinflated tyres, of which 33% were ‘dangerously’ or ‘very dangerously’ under-inflated. In addition, some 5% had a punctured tyre and 1% had tread depths below the legal minimum.

Pressures between 8psi and 14psi below the manufacturer's recommendation are classified as 'dangerous' by Michelin, while tyres more than 14psi below the recommended level fall into the 'very dangerous' category.

The Illegals: Nationwide Tour

The Illegals featuring former Eurovision star Niamh Kavanagh will undertake a nationwide tour over the next six months.

Playing the music of The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac the band has been on the road since March selling out music venues and clubs across Ireland and the UK. The Illegals have been playing together for 20 years and will return to a number of local venues to celebrate two decades of entertaining with the classic-rock tribute act.

The new show will include a

very special tribute to Glenn Frey, founding member of the Eagles, who passed away in January.

Fronted by the Niamh Kavanagh, the Illegals show is always rocking – digging deep into the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac backcatalogues.

The show runs for an entertaining three-hours with outstanding vocal harmonies, superb musicianship and unforgettable songs including the classics; Hotel California, The Chain, Desperado, Dreams and more.

The Illegals also cover many of the solo-career tracks from Glenn Frey, Stevie Nicks, Don Henley and Joe Walsh in the tribute show.

The group will return to Dublin to play Draiocht in Blanchardstown on May 14th and the Civic Theatre in Tallaght on June 17th.

Newfound confidence, friendships and a whole lifestyle change awaits those joining Slimming World Classes at the Maldron Hotel.

Leader Pamela Malone has helped members of Slimming World Maldron Hotel shift a whopping 245 stone since January – and she isn’t stopping there!

The Lucan woman started holding Slimming World classes five years ago after she herself shed 7.5 stone in one year on the programme.

She said: “I joined slimming world in 2010 and I lost 7.5 stone by 2011. Whether it is seven pounds or seven stone you have to lose the programme really helps – it teaches you how to cook things and how to change

your lifestyle.

“My family are all doing Slimming World now, my brother has lost 5 stone and my mam is on it. You can still have everything you there are no love, restrictions, it is just a different way of cooking.”

Pamela’s aim for 2016 is to get her clients ready for the Summer months – making them more positive and confident in the process.

She said: “We call our group ‘Inch Therapy’ because it is not just about weight loss, it is about changing your image of yourself, getting your confidence back.

There is no counting of calories or any of that, it really is just back to basics and the whole family see the benefit of it.”

According to Pamela the most rewarding part of leading the group is watching the mind and body transformation as clients reach their target weight.

More than 150 men and women attend Slimming World Maldron Hotel on a weekly basis with four classes taking place on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Two of the recent success stories in the group are members David Caswell, who lost 12 stone over 12 months and Gemma O’Flaherty who has lost a fabulous 5.5 stone.

Pamela also encouraged anyone who wants to join to come along and see what the classes are all about.
