Youth unemploYment unacceptablY high

Sinn Féin Councillor Fintan Warfield has commented on the latest youth unemployment figures released from the CSO, which confirm a youth unemployment rate of 20.1%.

The statistics, taking into account those aged between 15 and 24, have fallen by just two percentage points when compared to the beginning of last year.

Cllr. Fintan Warfield said: “Regardless of circumstance, young people have

consistently paid, and continue to pay the price for Government austerity policies.

“165,000 young people aged between 15 and 24 have left Ireland since the 2011 General Election, while one in six young people born in this state now live abroad.

“The potential of a reformed Dáil, now presents opportunities for a new energy and a strength of vision that can meaningfully deliver for our young people.

continued: “Sinn Féin’s focus for young people remains on the restoration of Jobseekers’ Allowance, a €500 reduction in third level fees, and the of protection vulnerable young people in the workforce.

“That means amending industrial relations legislation to provide for mandatory trade union recognition and collective bargaining rights, ensuring that activation schemes are of high quality and support job creation,

down shutting JobBridge and Gateway, and making greater use of JobsPlus and Community Employment Schemes.

“We will continue to call for an increase in the minimum wage to €9.65 and support the introduction of a Living Wage at €11.45 an hour.

As a first step towards its introduction, the public sector should be made a Living Wage employer.

“Significant investment in capital projects to fulfil the infrastructural needs of the state – in water, housing, schools, health, broadband and transport, and the creation of jobs in our frontline services will also act as a stimulus for job creation in the private sector and above all else, bring our young people home.”

setanta ruling: "do insurers in ireland now need to keep large reserves to provide for the potential follies of others?

In a statement issued

by Jonathan Hehir, Managing Director, www.coverinaclick.ie, he said that “Recent rulings on the liability of insurers to deal with claims stemming from the now defunct insurer Setanta have left a sour taste in the mouths of Ireland’s insurance companies.

Just yesterday the Court of Appeal upheld an earlier judgement that Motor Insurers’ Bureau has to cover €90m cost for the collapse of Setanta Insurance.

“The MIBI will pay the full cost of claims – but the MIBI is funded by insurance companies operating in Ireland. So in essence, these

insurance companies are being made pay for the mistakes of a competitor. And not only was Setanta a competitor of theirs, but it was a competitor that won business by quoting unrealistic pricing and that was essentially a rogue trader in the Irish market.”

“The hundreds of thousands of Euro that will now be paid out in claims will have to come from somewhere – and history tells us that when an insurance company needs to recoup losses such as these, they ultimately look to the consumer to do so.”

Over two hundred people attended the ‘Paths to Freedom’ conference in Tallaght Stadium last week. The conference was introduced by Deputy Mayor, Cllr.

Guss O’Connell who said he hoped that the event would reflect on the ‘idealism, aspirations and hopes of the 1916 leaders’.

RTÉ and broadcaster historian Dr. Myles Dungan was accompanied by leading academics and entertainers who presented a unique package of lectures and presentations to remember the Rising, 100 years on.

The morning was kicked off by Turtle Bunbury, author of ‘Easter Dawn – the 1916 Rising’ who spoke about the lives of the leaders of the Rising, weaving the story of these men with that of the Rising, bringing in some of the other Dublin-born men and women - actors, playwrights, musicians and soldiers - who

played upon the stage that epic week. Myles Dungan then spoke about the rebels’ courts martial and the British response to the Rising which was he said, in retrospect, a huge miscalculation, and of dubious legality, even in the context of a military emergency.

Catriona Crowe of the National Archives of Ireland gave an insight into the lives of the Dublin people in the years immediately before the Rising, reflecting on the inequality that existed in the city, with Dublin having some of the worst tenements in Europe at the time.

RTE broadcaster Joe Duffy spoke about the children who died as a result of the fighting of Easter week 1916, the subject of his recent bestselling book, Children of the Rising.

So far his research has verified forty children aged 16 and under who died violently in the Rising. Using family sources, newspaper

reports, census returns, compensation claims, and death birth certificates, this list is a glimpse of the lives of poor and rich, living side by side in a

cramped, crowded city.

The day was rounded up by Liz Gillis, historian and author, who discussed the vital role that women played in the Easter Rising.

Over 1,000 young people took in Skills for Work Week at Unilever Ireland, Citywest, Co. Dublin. where they learned the skills they need to get back to work as they visit 30 participating companies in 43 locations around Ireland during “Skills for Work Week”. This is the third year of the initiative and involves retail and grocery companies throughout Ireland providing free pre-employment skills for young people under 24 years.

usi welcomes positive impact of gender Quotas in ge, calling it huge progress in gender balance in politics

The Union of Students in Ireland has welcomed the positive impact of gender quota in the 2016 General Election and said it has achieved progress in gender balance in politics. The number of female TDs has increased dramatically since 2011 by 47% and USI said using gender quotas is the fastest way to achieve gender balance in politics.

“The new 32nd Dáil has the highest ever number of female TDs – 22%, up from 15%, an increase of 47%.” Kevin

Donoghue, USI President, said, “But it also means that almost 4 in 5 politicians are still male. While there is a long way to go to achieve true gender balance in politics, the gender quota is a good start. A diversity of voices in our politics will lead to more robust decisions, and help create a more equal, broader and more dynamic society.”

The Union of Students in Ireland organises a Women in Leadership Training weekend every year and had more female speakers than

male at this year’s Student Summit in Dublin castle on the 4th February. The USI said the strength of gender quotas lies in the trickle-down effect.

Gender quotas tend to push women up the ladder and solve the gender imbalance problems in the process. Women in leadership will be more likely to champion women in other areas of the organization and help them to progress.

Over time, this will ensure there are more and more women in senior positions.

“Gender quotas are oftentimes the first steps in achieving gender equality.”

Donoghue said, “They’re like stabilizers in a bike – you take them off eventually but they’re good for the start. Proponents of quotas often suggest that it’s a solution not without flaws but equality never develops organically – there must be action to achieve change. In the case of gender quotas to achieve gender the end balance, justifies the means.”

Clondalkin Councillor Jonathan Graham has requested that the relevant council department carry out overdue works at Neilstown shopping centre.

Graham said: “Neilstown Shopping Centre is more than just an integral part of our local economy. It is home to independent and franchise retailers employing local people, a crèche, a post office and several community facilities. It is regularly busy.

A major problem for the centre was the large volume of surface

water retention on the carpark. A subsequent problem was that the road gullies at the back of the centre were not plumbed in. This was causing a major nuisance for retailers and locals alike with regular flooding of the area when we had heavy rain.

The area around the centre is in the charge of South Dublin County Council. I submitted a motion instructing the

relevant department to carry out the essential remedial work. It is important that this work is to take place. I was happy to table this motion so that Neilstown Shopping Centre is protected and continues to play a vital role in the North Clondalkin community.

I have contacted the retailers to fill them in on work. They are all keen to see it happen as soon as possible.’

public consultation on proposed material alterations to the south dublin countY council draft development plan 2016-2022

South Dublin County Council has prepared proposed changes to the South Dublin County Council Draft Development Plan 2016 – 2022. This marks the third and final stage of a two year plan-making process.

The proposed changes, which are known as Proposed Material Alterations, originated from the consideration of the submissions and observations received between July and September 2015 on the Draft Development Plan 2016 - 2022. The Chief Executive prepared a report on the submissions and the Elected Members considered the report at Special Council Meetings in February 2016, agreeing

proposed changes to the Draft Plan.

The Proposed Material Alterations, an Environmental Report (Addendum 2), an Appropriate Assessment Screening Report and background information documents are available to view or download from the website, Council’s http://www.southdublindevplan.ie/stage-3 and may also be inspected in hard copy format from Thursday 25th February 2016 to Tuesday 29th March 2016 inclusive, Monday to Friday, excluding Bank Holidays at the following locations:County Hall, Tallaght during normal opening hours.

the communitY foundation for ireland launches the Year of #belonging16 bY announcing over €600,000 worth of grants to increase the sense of belonging in ireland.

The Community Foundation for Ireland, one of Ireland’s leading philanthropic organisations has announced that over €600,000 will be awarded to community and voluntary groups across Ireland to increase the sense of belonging in Ireland.

This year of #Belonging16 commences immediately with the announcement of €100,000 in grants being made available for community parties. 400 grants of €250 are on offer to communities across Ireland to host community parties, encouraging locals to get to know their neighbours.

Each community will receive a toolkit from The Community Foundation, along with their €250 grant to host a community party during 2016.

As the centenary celebrations look back on our successes as a nation over the last 100

years, we want to look forward as to how we can ensure the most marginalised groups in our society feel a sense of belonging in their families, communities, work places and wider society.”

This new fund of €600,000 for #Belonging16 will be in addition to the usual funding allocated by The Community Foundation to causes all over the country which last year totalled almost €5 million. . These funds are generously provided by philanthropic donors who utilise The Community Foundation for Ireland for their giving.

“2015 was a very successfully year for belonging by ensuring the LGBT community were fully and The recognised Community Foundation and its donors were a huge supporter of this, however we cannot rest on our

laurels when so many are ostracised and still unrecognised in Ireland, we must continue in our journey to ensure every person living in Ireland feels a sense of belonging” , Roche concluded.

Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has written to the European Commission demanding answers as to why a report highlighting the growing inequality and poverty in Ireland was held back until after the election.

The MEP for Dublin said: “I want to know on whose authority the EU Commission decided to withhold this report.

“If the European Commission took it

upon themselves to withhold it, then it will be yet another unacceptable example of this unelected body trying to influence the will of the voters.

“If, on the other hand, it was on the request of the outgoing government, then Enda Kenny has some serious questions to answer when he comes back before the Dáil.

“The report outlined how Irelands net

childcare costs are the highest in the EU and are not only preventing women getting back into work but are exacerbating child poverty levels.

“It also highlighted gross levels of underfunding in public transport, infrastructure, and education. It cited its concerns around the shortage, housing homelessness and the levels of mortgage

arrears.

“This report vindicates what Sinn Féin have been saying about the need to invest in public services and to bring an end to the austerity agenda. The fact that someone either in the Commission or the Irish Government chose to deny the electorate this information is deeply concerning and I will do my best to ensure that the person responsible be held accountable.”

Newly elected Sinn Féin T.D., Eoin Ó Broin has welcomed the cross party support for his County Development Plan motion placing new density restrictions on the Monastery Road SIAC land. The motion was passed by the Council on February 5th and is now included in the latest draft County Development Plan.

‘The development was strongly opposed by local residents who rightly felt that the density of the development was too

‘Unfortunately South Dublin County Council and An Bord Pleanala though otherwise and granted SIAC a 10 year planning permission.

‘At the recent County Development Plan meeting I tabled a motion to insert a new Specific Local Objective

(SLO) into the 20162021 County Development Plan. The purpose of the SLO is to residential restrict densities on the SIAC land to those of the surrounding housing estates off Monastery Road.

‘The motion was passed unanimously and I am grateful to all the Councillors who supported it.

‘Unfortunately the new restriction does not affect the existing 10 year planning permission. However if the land is not developed within the timeframe of the planning permission the new restrictions would then apply. This would mean that any application for an extension of the existing permission or any new application would have to take into account of the Development Plan’s demand for lower densities.

‘The SIAC development was clearly the last wheeze of a dying Celtic Tiger approach to residential development. It has no place in Clondalkin Village and should not go ahead.

‘Sinn Féin is not opposed to residential and commercial development on this site. However, like the local community, we do believe that any development should be in keeping with the surrounding area and add to rather than overburden the existing community and infrastructure.

Newly elected Sinn Féin T.D., Eoin Ó Broin has described as ‘disgraceful’ a decision by the Department of Social Protection to force long term housing applicants in receipt of rent supplement onto the Housing Assistance Payment. Cllr Ó Broin has said ‘families who have waited 9 or 10 years for a Council house will now have to wait even longer.’ He also accused the Government of ‘massaging housing list

figures’ and ‘trying to introduce this deeply unfair policy after the Dáil had been suspended in the hope that it wouldn’t be noticed.’

Deputy Ó Broin said: ‘When the then Minister for Housing Jan O’Sullivan was introducing the Housing Assistance Payment in 2013 it caused huge controversy.

The original scheme would have seen families who have waited years on the Council

list moving into private rented accommodation and taken off the social housing list.

‘Strong opposition in the Dáil and within Councils forced the government to do a partial u-turn. Families on the Council list who moved into HAP accommodation would be taken off the main Council list and moved to a HAP transfer list. While this would add years to their wait they would at least still

‘When the scheme was introduced in South Dublin County Council in January 2014 the Council took a decision to direct only new applicants to the housing system onto HAP. The reason was those families who had waited 9 or 10 years on the Council list should not be forced to wait any longer as a result of taking up HAP. It was our clear understanding that these families would be left on rent supplement as they were very close to securing a Council allocation.

‘However despite this being the policy of the Council, the Department of Social

Protection has this week written to families who have been on the Council list for over 9 years threatening them of withdrawing rent supplement payments if they do not transfer over to HAP. ‘This is a deeply cynical move by the Government.

They are trying to introduce this unfair policy after the Dáil had been suspended in the hope that it wouldn’t be noticed.

‘They objective is very clear. If a rent supplement claimant remains in their house but transfers the payment over to HAP they will be removed from the primary housing list and the

Government will claim that this list is reducing. In reality they will still be in insecure private rental accommodation and in need of social housing. This is about massaging the housing list figures, not meeting people’s real housing needs.

‘It is deeply unfair to force families who have patiently waited years on the Council list to take up HAP. I will be contacted the Council Housing Department and the Departments of Social Protection and Environment this week calling on them to reverse this deeply unfair decision.‘ Deputy Ó Broin concluded

Some 27 volunteers representing Dublin attended the 46th National Volunteers’ Conference of Foróige, Ireland’s leading youth organisation, which took place recently.

They were amongst the more than 220 Foróige volunteers from all over the country who took part in the conference, themed ‘Young People in 2016 – Shaping Ireland’s Future’, which was held in Hotel Westport in Co Mayo at the weekend.

Speaking at the conference, Chairperson of Foróige Michael Lynskey paid tribute to the Foróige volunteers across the country who give their time to help improve the lives of young people.

“Last year, over 400,000 hours were given freely by volunteers in Foróige – it’s a staggering amount of time, energy and commitment. Our volunteers help equip young people with the skills, knowledge and attributes they need to lead the best lives that they possibly can and we are truly grateful.”

Foróige now works with 54,000 young people and 5,500 volunteers each year through a network of 600 clubs, 150 projects and national programmes such as Entrepreneurship, Citizenship and Leadership.

q. i have just taken out a Grant of probate in my late Father’s estate and should be ready shortly to divide it up between the family members according to the terms of the Will. there is a liability for Capital acquisitions tax and i am unsure whether or not it is my responsibility as executor to ensure that the tax is paid for each beneficiary.

Could you please advise?

A. As it happens, the Executor/Administrator in an Estate is not required to deduct and pay the Capital Acquisition Tax due from the beneficiaries before passing on the bequest. When Probate has been granted, the Probate Office sends a copy of the Revenue Affidavit to the Revenue Commissioners.

The Revenue Commissioners will then issue a Form IT38 to each beneficiary who it understands may have a requirement to pay and file a CAT return. The obligation to pay and file a return rests with the beneficiary. However, in distributing the proceeds of any Estate, it is extremely important to advise the beneficiary, in your capacity as Executor, of their liability to pay Capital Acquisitions Tax and indicate that money should be kept aside for this purpose. It would be unwise for any beneficiary to think that the Revenue may be unaware of their windfall. The Revenue will be well aware of the gift which will have been notified to them by the Probate Office during the course of the administration of the Estate of any deceased and, as such, if they fail to set money aside to pay their liability on time, interest and penalties may apply. We would suggest therefore that in any covering letter to the beneficiaries, you include reference to that beneficiary’s

My aunt died before Christmas and i am living in Germany. i am named as executor and am also the sole beneficiary. i want to apply myself for the Grant of probate but i am informed that i cannot do so because i am living abroad. is this correct.

A. Yes, the information with which you have been provided is correct. As a non-resident Executor, you will be obliged to employ the services of a Solicitor within this jurisdiction to apply for the Grant of Probate on your behalf. In addition, you will need to supply a Personal Public Service (PPS) Number before a Grant of Probate can issue. The Department of Social Protections’ Client Identity Services (CIS) provide a registration service for non-resident applicants who cannot attend at a designated PPS registration centre and who need a PPS number for a transaction with a specified body. Client Identity Services can be contacted using the CIS Secure Online Request form or by phone at 1890-927-999 or 071 967 2616.

As this can take several months to process, it should be done simultaneously while you employ the services of a Solicitor to deal with the Grant of Probate on your behalf. We hope that this has been helpful.

My brother died recently and, although he appointed me as his executor, he has sadly left only debts. i am afraid to start the process of taking out any Grant of probate as i do not want to be responsible for his debts.

Could this be the case?

A. We are sorry to hear about the death of your Brother. In every case, however, if the deceased died insolvent or there is not enough money to meet the bequests made, payments from the Estate are prioritised in the following order: a) Funeral, testamentary administration expenses

and

b) Creditors who have security against the property of the deceased in the form a mortgage, charge or lien (these are different ways of securing loans)

c) Rates and Taxes due at the Testator’s death, wages and salary for work done for the Deceased within 4 months of debt and sums payable by the Estate in respect of contributions payable

by the Deceased in the 12 months prior to death under social welfare legislation. d)

All other creditors

Where any Deceased dies in debt, creditors can only bring a claim against the Estate of the Deceased. In other words, even if there is not enough money in the Estate to meet all the debts, the Executor in the Estate of the Deceased, or any relatives, are not personally responsible or liable for the Deceased’s debts. The liability of any Executor in any Estate is only up to the value of the assets in the Estate and does not in any way extend to the assets of the Executor. We hope that this has been of some comfort.

q. My father says that he is not going to make a will as everything will go anyway to his children equally. our Mother is dead some years now. is he right?

A. Assuming that he only intends his children to inherit, then ultimately, in the absence of a will, the estate of any deceased passes to their next of kin and given that your mother is already deceased, then the children of the deceased are the next in line to inherit and do so equally, with the children of any deceased child taking the share that their deceased parent would have taken or, if more than one, then, in equal shares. The method of extracting that grant however, is different and certainly more costly.

The whole idea of making a will is for the Testator to set out their final wishes in a legally binding format. It leaves nothing to chance and generally rules out arguments as to what any family member thought the Testator meant to say or do.

A will need not necessarily mean that all the beneficiaries, or those who felt they should be beneficiaries, are going to be happy.

However, it is a very clear statement of the Testators wishes and the courts are generally very reluctant to set a will aside. On the other hand, in the absence of a will, it is open to argument that the Testator made certain promises to some family members over others and a court will listen to arguments supporting any such claim. The estate is therefore more vulnerable to claims against it. A child living at home at the time of the parent’s death may argue that they were promised the house. I am not at all saying that this is what might happen in this particular case but, readers would be surprised at how often it does happen.

When a person dies without making a will, the next of kin have to decide who will act as Administrator. Where there is a will, the process leading up to the final distribution of the estate is called, 'Taking

out a Grant of Probate'. Where there is no will the process is called, 'Taking out a Grant of Administration'. The latter is a more complex process and requires the additional expense of an Administration Bond whereby the person or persons acting as Administrator(s) have to take out insurance undertaking to Administer the Estate according to the strict rules of Intestacy (no will). This is to protect those who should inherit according to the rules of Intestacy, in the event that a dishonest Administrator should perhaps deliberately leave out a beneficiary entitled who might, for example, have emigrated years ago and be unaware of the death of a family member, or a special needs child who cannot protect their entitlement. The Probate Office have to insist on this as they have no way of knowing that the documents furnished to them accurately lists all known family members of the deceased who are entitled to share in the estate. Generally, the absence of a will exposes the Estate to possible claims and certainly adds to the cost and time involved in taking out a Grant.

Our advice as always is to encourage people to make a will.

q. My neighbour was doing a Home will recently and asked me to witness the will. she showed me the signing page but not the text of the will itself. although she told me it was her will i have no way of knowing that. Does that still stand? the other witness may have read it but she had already signed and left by time i signed my name.

A. There is a very serious flaw in the signing of this will but it has nothing whatsoever to do with the content of the will. No witness needs to read the text of the will to be a valid witness. This is not and has never been a requirement.

However, what is an absolute requirement is that both witnesses are present at the same time and witness each other’s signature, in addition to witnessing the signature of the Testator. A will can be invalidated if this error comes to light subsequently and the implications of this are very serious indeed. For example, if a parent making a will has good reason to favour one child over another, the child receiving a lesser benefit could challenge the will and WILL be successful if it turns out that both witnesses were not present at the same time. This would result in the Estate of the Deceased parent proceeding as if there was no will and all children would inherit equally.

A solicitor instructed by an aggrieved beneficiary will always check this out as it is surprising how often it happens. You should go and tell your neighbour immediately that there is a problem with her will and explain why. She should re do it as soon as possible.

In contentious business a Solicitor may not calculate fees or other charges as a percentage or proportion of any award or settlement

Mayor Sarah Holland welcomed guests to Ballyroan Library for the launch of the ‘1916 Women Rising up Exhibition’ by Deputy Mayor, Cllr. Francis Duffy.

Speaking at the event Mayor Holland said “It is an enormous privilege to be Mayor of South Dublin County for the centenary of the Rising and I am delighted to be launching this exhibition here this evening as it is a most fitting tribute to the memory of the Women of 1916.This exhibition is a collaboration between my colleague Deputy Mayor, Cllr.

Francis Noel Duffy, South Dublin Libraries and South Dublin County Council’s Centenary Programme of Events to celebrate the forgotten lives of the women who played a pivotal role in the events of 1916”.

Cllr Francis Duffy said “I was first acquainted with the women in this exhibition in 2004 when I was surveying Kilmainham Gaol with from the students Dublin School of Architecture where I lecture. I met Niamh O’Sullivan from the Office of Public Works who facilitated a tour of the Gaol where she spoke passionately about the 300+ forgotten women who were interned for their anti-treaty beliefs in the west wing. I was particularly motivated by her speech about the women who did not have national profile or privilege, like Nurse Elizabeth O'Farrell who accompanied Padraig Pearse in the official handing over the surrender documents”.

The women involved in the struggle for Irish political independence between 1916 and 1923

were part of the long tradition of Irish patriotism. No less than the men, they were willing to give their lives for their ideals and to endure the rigors of hunger strike and separation from friends and family for their beliefs. Young mothers in particular suffered during the long months of incarceration.

However, history has not remembered them

in the same way as their patriotic brothers.

In fact, until very recently they have been virtually ignored.

The story of women revolutionaries in Kilmainham Gaol had almost passed from memory.

In closing her speech Mayor Holland commented “I think you will all agree that the exhibition is fantastic –

and gives a voice to all those women involved in 1916. I would like to say well done to Francis on producing such fabulous work”

The exhibition is currently on display at Ballyroan Library. It will also be going on to Monaghan at a later stage and will tour the Libraries of South Dublin County during 1916.

South Dublin County Council’s Decade of Centenaries events continue with the launch of the South Dublin and the 1916 Rising Exhibition.

The exhibition focuses on local involvement in the Rising. South Dublin County is most associated with the Rising through well-known historical figures such as Patrick Pearse and Eoin MacNeill but the exhibition also includes the stories of lesser known participants.

Although no fighting took place in the villages, South Dublin played its part in making the Rising happen with contributions like route marches, planning, recruiting and even supplying the paper on which the Proclamation was printed.

Speaking at the launch of the exhibition last Thursday, Mayor Sarah Holland said, “For me the legacy of previous generations cannot be left to gather dust in a museum or taken out and paraded on the streets for a day. It must be a living legacy. This exhibition which I am launching here this evening is a most fitting tribute to the memory of the men and women of South Dublin County who played a key role in the events of 1916.”

The exhibition contains artefacts from many private and public collections, and sincere thanks is due to those individuals and institutions who have so generously lent their items for display. the exhibition runs at the County library, tallaght until 27th May 2016.

primarY school pupils put on their europe's number one challenge ‘veg-heads’ for sow & grow 30,000 Irish school children to grow their own veg with GIY & innocent ‘Sow & Grow’ project

GIY & innocent Drinks have launched the fifth annual ‘Sow & Grow’ project, which aims to get primary school children to get their hands dirty while sowing and growing their own vegetables.

This year’s ‘Sow & Grow’ Ambassador and RTE’s ‘Operation Transformation’ nutritionist, Aoife Hearne was on hand to mark the opening date for the project with pupils of Our Lady of Good Counsel Boy’s National School in Drimnagh.

This year’s ‘Sow & Grow’ initiative will facilitate 30,000 primary school children from all across Ireland in their learning to grow cress, peas and spinach. Over the last four years innocent and GIY have facilitated more than 80,000 school children to have their first growing experience in classrooms countrywide.

Teachers and youth-group leaders can now apply for one of the free Sow & Grow packs on sowandgrow.innocentdrinks.comfor their classroom or group. Each pack includes 30 growing pots, seeds, soil, lesson plans and growing guides.

Studies show that children who grow their own food are more likely to eat fruit & veg, show higher levels of knowledge around nutrition and are more likely to continue healthy eating habits throughout their lives.

Registered schools are encouraged to track their growing progress throughout the term by writing about or uploading photos of their vegetables to the Sow & Grow website. For every school that does this, they will receive a Sow & Grow certificate as well the chance to win a class trip to Bloom Festival 2016 and Dublin Zoo, €500 of gardening equipment.

Winners of last year’s Sow & Grow project, Ms Zoe Quinn’s 2nd Class boys of Our Lady of Good Counsel National School, Drimnagh, are well-practiced planters by now. Secondary school students from around Ireland confronted Europe's number one challenge, as they role-played being the Council of the European Union in Dublin Castle last week.

They debated the EU's response to the largest flood of refugees since the Second World War at the ninth annual Model Council of the European Union.

Each of the twenty-eight schools took the part of a different EU Member State in what was to be an intense and well-informed discussion.

Barbara Nolan, Head of the European Commission Representation in Ireland said: "The plight of thousands of migrants putting their lives in peril to get to Europe has shocked us all. It is clear that no EU country can or should be left alone to address these huge migratory pressures. It is Europe's most severe refugee crisis since the Second World War and requires a radical strengthening fo the EU's migration system. This crisis is at the top of the European Commission's agenda".

The event, which is organised every year by the European Commission Representation in Ireland, took place in The Printworks Building in Dublin Castle.

Last weekend saw the first of a number of martial arts events to take place in South Dublin County over the next few months.

The Japan Karate Association European Championships 2016 takes place in the National Basketball Arena, Tallaght from the 31st March to the 2nd April with competitors, delegates and spectators expected from 34 countries, whilst over 2,000 visitors from around the world are expected to descend on Citywest Conference Centre between 15th and 19th of June, for the WUKF World Karate Championships, which has been brought to Ireland for the first time by the Amateur Marital Arts Association of Ireland (AMA Ireland)

“Last year AMA Ireland was awarded €3,000 from South Dublin County Council under the Community Tourism Diaspora Initiative” said Sean O’Brien, Tallaght based President of AMA Ireland. “We received the funding for the 1st AMA Ireland Open International Karate Championships 2015 which was held in the National Basketball Arena in August last year. The event was a great success with teams from Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Romania along with clubs and associations from Dublin competing. We were delighted to be able to apply for the Community Tourism Diaspora Scheme last year, and I can say many of last year’s attendees will be returning to Tallaght this year”.

South Dublin County Council recently launched the 2016 round of the Community Tourism Diaspora Initiative. The initiative builds on the community involvement legacy of The Gathering 2013 and is a joint partnership between South Dublin County Council, IPB Insurance and Fáilte Ireland. It aims to support local community-based events and festivals each year which attract overseas visitors to South Dublin County. Last year, a total of €9,000 was granted to supportlocal events in South Dublin, attracting up to 380visitors from overseas.

The Audi Dublin International Film Festival took place this weekend with Dublin director Paddy Breathnach’s movie Viva scooping the coveted Feature AUDI-ence Award as well as The Dublin Film Critics Circle Best Irish Film Award.

Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr Sarah Holland, proudly launched the exhibition of artefacts relating to the Easter Rising, in County Library, Tallaght.

The exhibition contains items lent by St Johns Ambulance and Dublin Fire Brigade, as well as letters and postcards from the time.

Cllr Holland said: “The legacy of 1916 stays with us, and is a living legacy.

The principles enshrined in the Proclamation have yet to be fulfilled, and are aspirations we should work towards as a society.

The items on display here give a snapshot of what life was like at the time, and also show a fascinating insight into some of the heroines and heroes of the time.

There is a focus on our local history, with key figures such as Padraig Pearse and Eoin MacNeill featuring as well as our local contribution to the Rising – such as the paper the Proclamation was printed on.

Slimming World Consultant Sharon Daly has proved she’s red hot after winning a Ruby Award for her work in helping to tackle obesity in the area.

Sharon who runs the Brookfield Slimming World group at Brookfield Youth and Community Center was delighted to receive the award for inspiring dozens

of people in the local community to start losing weight and to improve their health.

The accolade sees Sharon who lost 2st with Slimming World herself become a Ruby Consultant. The award was created in 2009 to celebrate Slimming World’s 40th anniversary and is given to all Consultants in

the UK and Ireland who welcome 40 new members to their group in one month.

This year is Slimming World’s 45th or Sapphire anniversary.

Console is asking cyclists to get on their bikes to highlight the fight against suicide. Over 300 cyclists took part in last year's Console East-West cycle from Kildare to Galway.

The entry level petrol engine is the 1.0 TSI with 115 PS. The 1.4 TSI comes with cylinder deactivation under partial load and produces 150 PS. The consumption and emissions figures for these engines are between 5.3 and 6.2 litres and between 123 to 141 grams.
