RENT INCREASES ‘NOT MATCHING WAGES’ Dublin South West Sinn Féin TD, Seán Crowe, has said that the recent Daft.ie figures on rent increases highlight the ongoing difficulties that many families are facing. Wages are just not keeping up with the rise in property and rent prices, particularly in the Dublin area, he claims.

Crowe believes that the latest Daft.ie figures reinforce the view that the Government needs to urgently look at introducing rent certainty to alleviate

the pressure on struggling households.

In the Dublin area, rents rose by 11.1% over a 12 month period and cost of renting is highest in the South Dublin area.

Deputy Seán Crowe said: “According to Daft.ie, the average rent in Dublin is running at €1,520. That is 5.2% higher than during the peak Celtic Tiger levels.

“For someone on the average monthly wage of €2,980 living in Dublin, rent for a house

“This means that buying the average house in Dublin is virtually a nogo area for a person on the average wage.

“Continuous rent increases affects everyone dependent on the private rental sector for their accommodation needs. This includes working families who cannot afford to save to buy a home, low

income families that are paying up to 60% of their disposable income on rent, and the increasing amount of students, as there are now 20% fewer properties available to meet this demand.

“In real terms, all of this is leading to a significant reduction in disposable incomes year on year and the erosion of a families’ ability to provide for their housing.

The change is a result of ESB formally notifying the CER on 25th August 2016 that an internal ESB financial reporting error resulted in an over-statement of ESB’s submitted 2016/17 PSO cost amounting to €8.505 million.

SVP welcomes the CER decision to request a comprehensive report on how the error occurred.

“Despite the downward adjustment it still means that the levy on electricity bills will have increased more than fourfold since October 201, when it

stood at €92.12m.” said John-Mark McCafferty, Head of SVP Social Justice and Policy.

The PSO will now add €80.36 (including VAT at 13.5%), down from the proposed €82.04, to domestic bills for the 12 months from October 2016.

The current levy for 2015/2016 is €68.20 (including VAT) for domestic bills.

John-Mark McCafferty said that SVP is repeating its call to have the social impact of the PSO assessed.

“It is imposed on all domestic customers at a flat rate, creating an increased burden on low income customers and those with a history of arrears and

rental market, for both landlords and tenants.

“The Government needs to recognise that rent certainty is key to alleviating

pressure on these households and needs to act accordingly. The latest Daft.ie figures reinforce the view that the Government

needs to look again at introducing rent certainty to alleviate the pressure on those trapped in the rental sector.”

The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) has welcomed the reduction of 2.1% in the proposed Public Service Obligation Levy (PSO) level from 1st October next but still insists that the existence of the levy itself should be reviewed for the sake of fairness to consumers.

A revised document from the Energy Regulator (CER) says that the PSO due to come into effect on 1st October for 2016/17 has been reduced by 12c per month (€1.44 for the year) for consumers.

This revision represents a reduction of €8.505 million to the PSO levy amount of €400.9 million

APPLICANTS URGED TO RETURN HOUSING ASSESSMENT FORM Dublin South West Sinn Féin TD, Seán Crowe, has urged Local Authority housing applicants in the South Dublin County Council area to respond to the Housing Needs Assessment form or face losing their place on the housing list.

Crowe believes that this particular year there is a new dimension and added difficulty for some of the people on the housing waiting lists who are not computer literate as they now have to fill out the Council form online.

South Dublin County Council intends to write to each housing applicant on its Social Housing List prior to 21st September 2016 using the current address they have on file for each applicant.

The onus is on the applicant to inform the Council if they have changed their address and every year huge numbers are removed

for not responding to assessment letter, with many claiming they never got the letter.

Deputy Seán Crowe said: “South Dublin County Council is once again commencing its annual Housing Needs Assessment.

“Once again the Council propose to write to each housing applicant on its Social Housing List prior to 21 September 2016 and will use the current address they have on file for each applicant.

“Every year huge numbers of people lose their place on the housing list by not notifying the Council of their change of address. If someone has subsequently moved address the onus is on the applicant to inform them of any changes.

“The very real danger is they may not get the letter about this yearly assessment and

subsequently lose their place in the queue or get removed altogether from the housing application list. This, in my experience, happens to applicants every single year.

“I would advise anyone who has moved address to notify the Council as they could have their application for social housing terminated.

“This could also have implications for applicants receiving a rental support, as it may be cut. An applicant has to be on a local authority housing list to continue to receive a rental support.

“This year, each applicant will be asked to complete an online form and provide documentary evidence of any changes in their circumstances and return this information to South Dublin County Council.

“I would urge people to simply do just that.

“Anyone who fails to return the housing needs assessment within the specified time allocated, may see their application for social housing support terminated.

“There is clearly a need for an up-to-date live register for South Dublin County Council to assess its housing needs but I would be extremely concerned that this does not change and turn into a cull of the housing list.

SUICIDE OR SURVIVE FUNDRAISER

A Dublin couple are racing around Ireland in an effort to raise €100,000 for Suicide or Survive and highlight mental health issues across the country.

Lisa Jacob and Nikki Dorey are the first allfemale duo to complete the Race Around Ireland challenge which takes in over 2,000km in just 132 hours.

The two women are cycling non-stop for 5.5 days in order to complete the 2,150km mammoth challenge – cycling three hours on, three hours off for almost a week.

Nikki, a former Shamrock Rovers player, has competed in International Triathlons and is a pilot with Aer Lingus while Lisa is a former international hockey player winning 139 caps for Ireland during her playing career.

Both women have been preparing for the challenge for a number of months by training several times and week and putting together an experienced

The challenge started last week and the team has already raised more than €17,500 for the cause.

Lisa and Nikki are very passionate about mental health and are away of the close link between mental health and LGBT equality, especially in the youth demographic.

She said: “What Nikki

and Lisa are doing is truly inspirational.

They have dedicated months of their lives to training, night and day, rain or shine. What they are now embarking on is a true testimony to their incredible generosity and determination to make Ireland a better place.

“They have inspired us enormously with their courage and I know they will inspire countless others. The funds they are raising are so important as we continue to work together to address the tremendous

orthodontic services and waiting lists in this State are so great that, since April 2016, the HSE has undertaken the procurement of orthodontic services with a number of private service providers nationally.

At the end of July, 590 patients had been outsourced to private service providers.

Similarly, as we have seen from recently released figures on the EU Cross-border healthcare directive, orthodontics has been the second most common service and treatment availed of by Irish citizens under the scheme.

“During the recession there was a drastic scaling back across the three main fields of publicly funded dental provision – the Dental Treatment Benefit Scheme (DTBS), the Dental Treatment Service Scheme (DTSS) and the Public Dental Service. Similarly, for those with a severe need who qualify for orthodontic treatment, the wait has been getting longer. At the end of June, there were 42.5 orthodontic specialists in the HSE, with a recruitment pause in place.

“The cuts made across the dental schemes have inflicted unnecessary pain and

suffering. They have caused an increase in the use of more complicated and expensive emergency treatments as a direct result of the removal of opportunities for prevention and early intervention.

This further manifests in a farcical situation where we have greater demand for services, growing waiting lists, a recruitment pause at the same time that the HSE are outsourcing to private service providers and relying on a cross-border directive

to provide services.

“It is important that the Minister now looks to ensuring that there are sufficient personnel in our dental and orthodontic services to meet the demand that is there. It is clear that with the demand that exists, it is not feasible to have a recruitment pause in place given that any rationale of ‘cost containment’ is offset by the fact that the HSE has been forced to outsource these treatment, as well as reimburse costs under the EU cross border healthcare directive.”

SOUTH DUBLIN COUNCIL LAUNCHES NEW ROAD SAFETY PLAN

The Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr. Guss O’Connell has launched South Dublin County’s new Road Safety Plan.

The Road Safety Plan 2016 - 2020 sets out how the Council, along with its partner agencies, will implement the National Road Safety Strategy in South Dublin County.

The plan aims to reduce the number of road collision casualties in South Dublin and increase road safety awareness.

The four main objectives of the plan are: Education - involves campaigns and initiatives aimed at the various age groups to improve road users attitudes and behaviour

towards road safety Engineering - creating a safer road environment that reduces the number and severity of collisions Enforcement deterring inappropriate behaviour on our roads such as speeding and drink driving Evaluation - annually reviewing and assessing our progress towards safer roads This plan was produced by the Council’s Road Safety Working Together Group, an interagency partnership group chaired by Cllr. William Lavelle.

Mayor Guss O’Connell welcomed the new plan and acknowledged the contributions from An Garda Síochána, Dublin Fire Brigade, Road Safety Authority,

National Transport Authority and Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

The Mayor said “I am delighted to have been asked to launch the first Road Safety Plan in the County and I believe this is a vital step in improving the safety of all road users.

By working together we can make our roads safer, we all need to be proactive in our approach to road safety and this plan gives us a pathway to follow towards safer roads for our communities.”

Speaking at the launch, Councillor William Lavelle, chairman, said: “As commuting habits in Dublin change we are now seeing an increased number of people

walking and cycling to work, school, college and social activities.

While this change in mobility patterns is slow, it is growing and is a very welcome change. However, given

the predominantly suburban or rural nature of our County, it is understandable that the car is still the favoured mode of transport for many. This inevitably increases

the danger for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, motorcyclist and pedal cyclists. Being aware of this fact we now must make a strategically planned approach on

how to reduce the risk, frequency and severity of road collisions.”

HOUSING REPORT CONFIRMS DUBLIN BEING HELD TO RANSOM BY DEVELOPERS

Responding to the Housing Supply Coordinating Task Force for Dublin, Councillor Daithí Doolan, Chairperson of Dublin City Council’s housing committee, said: “Dublin is in the midst of an unprecedented housing crisis. This report confirms what many already knew.

Developers are keeping large tracts of land from the market. This serves to keep home prices at a premium for developers. This is unacceptable. It must be tackled.

“I welcome the

recommendations that Compulsory Purchase Order powers should be strengthened. This would allow local authorities to buy some of this land and then commence building of homes. There is enough land zoned for 53,000 homes in Dublin city.

That land could be bought and developed

by Dublin City Council.

“But key to this being successful is adequate funding from the Department of Housing. Consecutive governments have starved Dublin City Council of essential

funding to build homes.

This has directly caused the current housing crisis.That must change. Minister Coveney must release the much promised funding and let Dublin City Council get on with building homes.

“This government claims to have prioritised tackling the housing crisis. Dublin City Council has plans to commence a major building programme on Dublin sites. We can make the crisis history.

What we need is government funding.”

HOME HELP HOURS NEED TO BE INCREASED ACROSS THE BOARD

Fianna Fáil TD and Spokesperson on Dublin John Lahart is urging the government to increase the hours of Home Help Service which is provided to older and vulnerable people nationwide.

Lahart commented, “In Ireland over the next 30 years, the number of people aged over 65 will double and the number aged over 85 will almost quadruple. We are living longer than our ancestors could

ever have envisioned, but inevitably as we grow old we will all experience ailments and disabilities which are part and parcel of ageing.

Budget 2017 must take this reality into account.

“Age Action has recently highlighted the crisis in community care and their latest report detailed that as many as half of their clients in nursing homes, or on the waiting list for nursing homes,

could be at home if the proper supports were provided.

“It was also pointed out that each Community Health Organisation, responsible for providing home care services, has its own system.

Therefore, someone might be getting the home help they need in one area but not be eligible for support on the other side of a HSE boundary.

This lack of consistency in adjudicating the criteria for Home Help only adds to the stress experienced by the elderly. The

provision of Home Help services is imperative for families who are under strain from helping to look after a loved one who may need additional care.

“Fianna Fáil has proposed to offer people a home care package as an alternative to longterm residential care.

This will apply in circumstances where the provision of a home care package is less costly to the State compared to long term residential care. This necessary measure not only benefits the

individual concerned and their families, but also the State due to less demands being placed on longterm residential care services.

“Our health service is already under a huge amount of strain and failing to proactively plan for our ageing population now will lead to a crisis of epic proportions further down the line. Through Home Help we can empower older people to live a full and dignified life in the comfort of their own home.”

TALLAGHT GARDA NUMBERS WHOLLY INADEQUATE

Local Fianna Fáil TD and Spokesperson on Dublin, John Lahart, has said that the number of Gardai assigned to Tallght Garda Station is far below what is required and pales in comparison to other areas of similar population, such as Limerick City.

He said: “The most recent figures made available to me from the Minister for Justice show that there are 175 Gardai attached to Tallaght Garda Station, for an area with a population of approximately 80,000 people. Compare this to Henry Street Garda Station in Limerick City which has a total of 309 Gardai with a population of approximately 60,000.

Lahart said: “The facts of the matter

are, when compared like for like, Tallaght Garda Station and the people it serves are not getting a fair slice of the pie. A lot of the focus recently has been on Dublin’s Inner City, and I understand and support that. However, it is important that the Garda Commissioner displays an equal commitment to the surrounding areas, and this can be done by strengthening the Garda numbers in Tallaght.”

Lahart was speaking in the wake of new figures that were released to him in a response to Parliamentary Questions that he had submitted to the Tánaiste and Minster for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald.

Figures released to Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Louise O’Reilly TD show that since the cross-border healthcare directive was transposed in Ireland in 2014, 535 people have accessed the scheme up to 30th June 2016, with 371 of those in the first six months of this year alone. Fianna Fáil Senator and Seanad Group Leader, Catherine Ardagh has called on the Government to review the current pension system. Those who may have taken time out of the workplace to look after children or to care for a relative are currently being unfairly penalised as they fail to qualify for a full pension.

Commenting on the issue Senator Ardagh said, “I have been

contacted by a number of women who are worried about their pension entitlements.

These are women who have taken a number of years out of work to look after their children, and who now do not have enough contributions to meet the qualifying criteria for the full state pension.

“I have also been made aware of certain cases where people have had to leave work to care for an elderly relative

and are now in the same unjust position.

“The Government must review the current system, which is deeply unfair. People leaving the workforce to care for children or relatives should not be penalised for doing so. They have made a substantial contribution to society, both in their roles in the workplace, and as carers. This needs to be fully realised and recognised by the State.

“This Government

speaks regularly about equality and fairness, but the current pensions system is antiquated and unequal.

“I intend on publishing a bill set to reform woman’s pension’s rights during the forthcoming Oireachtas term.

The new measures outlined in the proposed bill are essential to narrowing the gender gap in Irish women’s pension coverage,” concluded Senator Ardagh.

HSE CONSIDERING NEW LOCATION FOR SINN FÉIN WOULD INVEST OVER €9M IN AMBULANCE SERVICES IN 2017 CLONDALKIN VILLAGE PRIMARY CARE CENTRE Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson for Health Louise O’Reilly has said that more adequate investment in the ambulance service is necessary as the State must guarantee basic levels of care across the country, of which the National Ambulance Service is a key public service.

O’Reillysaid: “Many communities across the State experience lengthy and dangerous delays waiting for ambulances.

We hear every week stories of people waiting long times, even when in a close proximity to hospitals or dispatch centres.

“The State must guarantee basic levels of care across the country. The National Ambulance Service is a key public service.

We recognise that the paramedics in our health service

are working under growing pressure, with rising numbers and increasingly complex callouts. The government has to date failed to support them by providing adequate numbers of staff. We need only look at the recent threats of strike action to see a service and team overstretched, u n d e r f u n d e d and frustrated.

“Since the publication of the Capacity Review, Sinn Féin has been vocal in calling for Government to engage with all stakeholders and representatives of ambulance professionals to agree on a way forward that ensures we have an operational, properly funded and wellresourced national ambulance service that is fit for purpose.

“That report showed

that capacity needs to be increased to meet demands. It pointed to the need for increased resources in terms of personnel, vehicles and technology.

We welcome that, following the WRC talks, commitments have been made to new investment in the service, but we need concrete follow-up on tis. Budget 2017 is the chance to do that and we need to see a plan from the Minister now on how and when it will be rolled out.

“Communities across the country should not have to experience long and dangerous delays waiting for ambulances.

The paramedics and frontline personnel want to ensure quality of care and patient safety and this cannot happen without these commitments in terms of resourcing being followed through on.”

Sinn Féin TD Eoin Ó Broin has received correspondence from the HSE confirming that they are considering an alternative location for the Clondalkin Village Primary Care Centre.

The move comes following a decision of HSE’s private partners to put their land on the Boot Road up for sale.

The HSE have also confirmed that plans for the Rowlagh Primary Care Centre to be located in the grounds of Collinstown College are on track.

Meanwhile the HSE have also confirmed that the provision of Occupational Therapist services for Council tenants applying for home adaptation grants remains unresolved due to staffing shortages.

Deputy Ó Broin said: “Three successive governments have committed to the provision of two primary care centres

in Clondalkin. One in Clondalkin Village and the other in North Clondalkin.

“I recently sought an update for the HSE Regional Manager David Walsh. In his reply he confirmed that the Rowlagh Centre is progressing well and that plans to provide the new facility on the grounds of Collinstown College are on track.

“However he also indicated that the HSE were considering an alternative location for the Clondalkin Village Centre. The move comes following a decision by the HSE’s private partners for this centre to put the Boot Road site up for sale.

“The Boot Road Public Private Partnership caused considerable controversy at the time of application due to the scale of the private elements of the plan including an 80 bed nursing home and large private underground

car park. The decision to grant planning permission was upheld

by An Bord Pleanala.

“While the HSE is not ruling out proceeding with the existing site depending on the intentions of the purchasers of the Boot Rd site they have indicated that the Centre does not have to be built there and an alternative site may be proposed.

“The provision of both of these Primary Care Centres is well overdue and the HSE and Department of Health must ensure that no further delays occur.

People in Clondalkin deserve high quality primary care provided in appropriate modern facilities.

“The HSE have also confirmed that they are still not in a position to provide Occupational Therapy services to Council tenants based in Clondalkin and Lucan applying

for home adaptation grants, despite providing this service to Council tenants in Tallaght.

David Walsh has confirmed that due to staffing shortages there are not in a position to meet this important need.

“As a result very vulnerable people who urgently need their homes adapted are unable to apply for the Council grant unless they can afford to pay for a private Occupational Therapist.

This is resulting in people having to delay their application despite living in property that is no longer suitable for their special needs.

“I have written to the Minister for Health Simon Harris calling on him to provide the funding to address this issue and to ensure that all Council tenants across South Dublin receive the same service from the HSE.”

MINISTER MUST MOVE ON SPORTS CAPITAL GRANT ALLOCATIONS Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin Mid-West, John Curran says sports clubs in Clondalkin and Lucan are losing out on important funding because the Sports Minister has failed to announce the next round of the Sports Capital Grant.

Minister Ross has confirmed that no decision has been taken on when the next round of the grant will be made.

Deputy Curran commented, “It is scandalous that there has been no Sports Capital Grant announcement for 2016. Even if a decision is made in the next few months, the fact of the matter is no money will be drawn down at all this year. This money is extremely important for sports clubs and communities across the country with many depending on this funding to buy new equipment and upgrade and improve facilities.

“There appears to be no credible reason as to why this year’s announcement has not been made, but it is not acceptable that clubs across the country are being left high and dry. The last round of applications for the scheme was in 2015 and an announcement for this year is long overdue. I am worried by Minister Ross’ lax attitude, and particularly his comment that “no decision has been taken on the timing of the next rounds of the SCP”.

“This scheme should not be allowed to fall off the Minister’s agenda. It is a vital resource for communities the length and breadth of the country, who are now missing out on essential funding.

Minister Ross needs to address this issue without delay and announce the next round of applications”.

SEARCH FOR IRELAND’S BEST YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR GETS UNDERWAY IN SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY €2 million investment fund to support young entrepreneurs, aged between 18 and 35

The latest search to find Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur (IBYE) is getting underway in South Dublin County this week, through Local Enterprise Office South Dublin.

With a €2million investment fund available, including a €50,000 investment fund for South Dublin winners, the enterprise initiative from the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and Enterprise Ireland attracted 1,400 applications across the country last year and supported over 450 young entrepreneurs through training, mentoring and direct financial assistance.

Announcing the start of this year’s programme, the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Ms. Mary Mitchell O’ Connor T.D. said: “The quest to find Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur is one of the most

exciting initiatives to create new businesses and new jobs in recent years. IBYE generates that “can-do” spirit in which young people excel.

I want to foster that spirit and to demonstrate that there is help out there for any young person that wants to take a risk and start their own business. The firststop-shop to get advice and support on starting a business is your Local Enterprise Office.

I want to congratulate the Local Enterprise Offices on rolling out IBYE and I look forward to meeting Ireland’s young entrepreneurs up and down the country.

I would encourage all young entrepreneurs, between the ages of 18 and 35 to talk to their Local Enterprise Office about the IBYE programme and discuss their business ideas.”

The initiative is coordinated by all 31 Local Enterprise Offices and begins with a nationwide

competition across three categories at county level: Best Idea, Best Start-Up Business and Best Established Business. Around 450 applicants, across every Local Authority area, will be invited to regional ‘Entrepreneur Bootcamps’ in November, to help them develop their business and new venture ideas.

Speaking about Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur (IBYE), Minister for Employment and Small Business, Pat Breen T.D., said: “Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur (IBYE) initiative offers a very significant stepping stone into the world of running your own business for young people aged 18 to 35.

It’s not just the scale of the investment fund on offer that makes IBYE so important, IBYE entrants can go on to receive intensive enterprise boot camp training from their LEO

under the programme, to help them establish and develop their entrepreneurship careers. The level and depth of the business mentoring, training and advice available during the LEO bootcamps has proven to be extremely effective in helping young ambitious business people to cope with all aspects of running a business, especially the preparation of focused business plans. Such plans are an essential tool for making a success of any business.

IBYE has proven to be a great success in all the regions and I would encourage young people with a business idea or currently running a business to apply for Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur”.

With an investment fund of €50,000, Local Enterprise Office South Dublin will award six investment prizes to three category winners and three runners-up,

before the Regional Finals early next year.

The local winners in the Best Start-Up and Best Established Business categories will receive €15,000 each and the two runnersup will each receive €5,000.

The Best Business Idea winner locally will receive an investment prize of €7,000 and the runnerup will receive €3,000.

Colm Ward with the Local Enterprise Office explains: “The €50,000 investment fund for our winners is a very important part of the competition and will help more young entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and

create more jobs here locally. Other business supports, such as management training, networking and oneto-one mentoring are also at the heart of the IBYE competition. 450 young entrepreneurs benefitted from these business supports last year, so the rewards are there for participants, as well as for the winners. Taking part in IBYE will help Ireland’s young entrepreneurs to move their businesses to the next level, whatever stage their business is at.”

The competition is now in its third year and last year’s local winners were: Pewter Games

studios in the Best Business Idea category and Muscrai Suction Excavation Ireland Ltd in the Best StartUp Business category.

The county’s Best Young Entrepreneur for 2015 was Christopher Conlan of Pewter Games Studios.

NEW CHAIRMAN APPEALS FOR SCHOOLS TO HELP PREVENT CHILD DROWNINGS “30 children drowned in ten years yet curriculum remains largely untaught” The Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Simon Coveney TD has announced the appointment of Martin O’Sullivan as Chairman of Irish Water Safety, the statutory and voluntary body established to promote water safety.

“I am honoured to be appointed as Chairman of Irish Water Safety (IWS).

It is an organisation with a rich history of volunteerism and is deeply committed to these volunteers who teach swimming, lifesaving and promote

drowning prevention initiatives nationwide.” said Mr O’Sullivan.

“I commend our volunteers for organising winter and summer classes in lifesaving and I strongly appeal to those with children in their care to enrol them in our upcoming annual lifesaving classes nationwide.

Over 110,000 certificates were issued last year as volunteers teach the skills necessary to maintain a corps of trained lifeguards for pools and beaches

and give the public water confidence and water survival skills.”

“The winter series of classes run by our volunteers for children and adults nationwide complement the water safety curriculum that we developed for primary schools.

Thirty children aged fourteen and under drowned in the last ten years so I appeal to schools to teach water safety in the classroom so that children learn good habits.”

Q. In assessing the contribution for the Fair Deals Scheme, can you give us some advice as to what assets are taken into account? My father who is currently being assessed for the scheme gave a gift to each of his four children of €5,000 last year. Should this be included in the assessment?

BIFE AND IT TALLAGHT SIGN PROGRESSION AGREEMENT

Bray Institute of Further Education (BIFE) BIFE have just signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT) at the BIFE campus. This is following the recent new agreement with BIFE signed by IADT, Carlow IT and BIFE. This new agreement between Tallaght Institute and BIFE will bring advanced entry to graduates of courses at BIFE to a wide variety of courses in IOT Tallaght leading to honour degrees.

Given that BIFE have an outstanding reputation in Further and Higher Education, these agreements further enhance BIFE’s position

as the leading Institute in this region. These agreements articulate links between BIFE in key areas across a wide range of disciplines.

The Principal Ray Tedders stated that WICKLOW/ South Dublin has key sectors such as film making ,tourism, computer technologies, and health care to name but a few employing many graduates from BIFE. BIFE has developed its links with these Higher Education Institutes and this allows BIFE graduates to study locally and get progression routes to Higher Education Institutes.

meet local, regional and national needs.

It was very significant that the Government Minister Simon Harris TD took the time to attend the formal signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between BRAY Institute and Institute of Technology Tallaght.

He congratulated Dr. Thomas Stone, President of the IOT Tallaght and the Principal of Bray Institute Ray Tedders on the signing of the agreement between their Institutes. He noted that a lot of work was put into getting this agreement finalised by the staffs of their Institutes. The benefit will be felt

by Learners who will have pathways open to them and to staff who will work more closely collaboratively.

GAEL LINN ANNOUNCED A NEW PROGRAMME OF EVENTS

Gael Linn – the organisation which aims to foster the Irish language and heritage across the country – has announced a new programme of events for 2016-2017.

The new schedule is aimed at both primary and second level schools nationwide and will begin next month.

Niamh de Búrca from Gael Linn explained: “The aim is to inspire and encourage pupils to use whatever Irish they have both inside and outside the classroom, through participation in traditional music and song, debates and public speaking and school variety and talent shows.”

In October second level students will have the opportunity to take part in the renowned Gael Linn debating competitions; Comórtas Uí Chadhain for Irish medium schools and Comórtas an Phiarsaigh for all other schools.

Scléip, the contemporary talent competition for AllIrish second level schools will also return, providing a platform for aspiring rock and pop bands, singers, dancer and actors while

Siansa Gael Linn, now regarded as the most prestigious competition for teenage traditional musicians and singers, starts later in the year.

The finals of the hotly contested competition will take place at the National Concert Hall next April.

This year Coirm, a series of one-day festivals held in eight centres throughout the country, will give primary schools from

A scheme to promote the use of the Irish language amongst young people will also be run by Gael Linn during the school term.

There will also be debating competitions for third level students and a variety of courses and musical evenings for adults hosted

The organisation also distributes the famed Fáinne – worn as a symbol of being able to, and willing, to speak Irish – with three rings to choose from, according to language ability.

PARIS MOTOR SHOW PUTS SPOTLIGHT ON THREE LATEST MERCEDES-BENZ MODELS

Mercedes-Benz is using the Paris Motor Show to highlight three of their latest new models – the C-Class Cabriolet, E-Class Estate and GLC Coupé.In the offing too, though wrapped in secrecy until its unveiling, is a model they describe under the working title ‘Electric Sub Brand’.

Being rolled out to dealers countrywide, the two-door, open-top C-Class Cabriolet – the first convertible produced

in C–Class form - is a car that their sales manager in Ireland, Ciaran Allen says ‘is crafted for cruising’.

With a soft top that can be opened/closed in just under 20 seconds, even at speeds up to 50 km/h, it comes with a comfort pack that makes post-Summer open-top motoring entirely possible.

Items that will help motorists to enjoy summer into autumn, top down motoring

include neck-level heating for driver and front seat passenger and an electric draught stop system that delivers maximum open-air comfort, even at low temperatures.

Vehicles (LCV) up 11% (1,815 ) on the same month last year (1,642) and currently, year to date, are up 22% (24,545) overall. While Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) registrations, are also up 49% for the month of August (251) 2016 when compared to August last year (169), with registrations up 41% year to date.

Commenting on the figurers SIMI Director General Alan Nolan said “The Motor Industry has

been working hard to deliver the continuing level of growth in what has been a noticeably more difficult market since June. As we move toward the end of 3rd quarter of the year the Industry remains focused on business still to be done, with strong offers still available for consumers. In contrast with the era before the two-period registration system was introduced, when sales were all but finished in the first quarter, the interest

in new vehicle sales now tends to carry to the end of the third quarter, but obviously at a lower rate.

We believe the Industry is still on course to deliver close to 150,000 new car sales by the end of the year, indeed new car sales have already generated €1.2 Billion for the Exchequer in VRT and VAT receipts.

Our Industry currently employs over 42,000 people nationwide and it is crucial that

the provisions in the forthcoming Budget for 2017 support rather than undermine the State’s tax revenues and employment across the sector. It is important that Budget 2017 contains measures that improve the position of both consumers and businesses.

The potential for post-Brexit Sterling exchange rates to drain business away from the Irish domestic economy was highlighted by the increase of 76% in the

number of Imported Used Cars in July, so clearly the last thing we need at this stage is any further damaging tax increase in the forthcoming Budget.

Suggestions of piecemeal increases on diesel fuel or indeed on Road Tax being considered, at a time when soaring insurance costs are already impacting, would be damaging and extremely ill-conceived given that a new EU emissions regime is being rolled-out

from next year which will require a major review of our current environmental taxation.

Our Industry, like the rest of the domestic economy, needs stability and as much certainty as is possible to support consumer and business confidence, especially given concerns regarding Brexit, in order to support a continuation of the recovery and progress of the past few years.”

The movie is the brainchild of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg who have worked together on so many of tongue-incheek movies over the last 10 years including Knocked Up, Superbad and Pineapple Express.

The creators of This Is The End have brought together some Hollywood heavy hitters for this hugely clever, but slightly slow-moving, adult animated comedy.

Frank is a sausage who dreams every day of being ‘chosen’ with Brenda, a bun that resides in the package next to his.

The two live in Shopwells Grocery Store where all of the food on the shelves believe that humans are gods who choose them to bring to the ‘great beyond’ to live a better life.

What the food does not know, however, is that humans buy sausages, buns, potatoes, crisps, carrots and condiments to consume – killing their foodie friends and family in the process.

The idea is brilliant, the puns are stunningly good and the visuals are very funny but, in all honesty, some of the jokes fall a little flat.

Sausage Party sets out to shock viewers first and foremost so some of the gags get a little left behind in favour of extreme language and over the top sexual innuendo.

That said, there are some truly hilarious moments in the movie, mainly when the food is killed off – either through spillage on the shop floor or at the hands of the dastardly humans.

When Frank learns the truth about the ‘great beyond’ he tries to warn the other food and bring them together to fight back against the barbaric human gods that

would consume them.

Kristen Wiig voices Brenda and delivers some of the best lines in the movie as she questions whether she brought this disaster upon herself – and if she has sacrificed too much for Frank.

James Franco, Edward Norton and Salma Hayek all voice characters as well as the brilliant Michael Cera and Jonah Hill.

Make no mistake Sausage Party is not for the fainthearted or the easily offended – but if you like your humour completely irreverent and pretty filthy then this movie will make you laugh-out-loud.

Although not friends when they first met in university the two scarers soon formed a strong bond.

There is lots to like about this movie for and adults – and it is a great way to get the youngsters back into schoolmode. Funny, clever and visually great.

THE WHISKEYS OF IRELAND A children’s novel that is relatable, well-written and engaging Hannah in the Spotlight is the first in a series of books from author Natasha Mac a’Bháird.

The book, which is published on September 5th, tells the story of 12-year-old Hannah who is on her Summer holidays from school and gets lumbered with her four younger siblings on a constant basis.

She dreams of going to drama camp like the other girls in her school but she knows that helping her mother out is more important.

Despite missing out on drama camp Hannah is determined to start up her own project along with friends Laura and Ruby and new neighbour Meg. The girls decide to form Star Club; their very own drama club which will give them each a chance to shine.

However, between babysitting duties, Star Club and coping with her unruly siblings Hannah has a lot on her plate and new friend Meg is being very mysterious indeed.

Disaster strikes when Hannah’s big sister obligations clash with Star Club and Meg starts to keep

secrets from the other girls.

But whatever happens, the girls each believe that the show must go on in the name of Star Club.

Hannah in the Spotlight offers lots of thrills and spills for drama fans from the age of 10-years-old and there is plenty to like in the first book in the series with much more to come.

Author Natasha has already been shortlisted for a Reading Association of Ireland Award for her

previous book Olanna’s Big Day and was highly praised by critics for Missing Ellen which was included in White Ravens 2014, the International Youth Library’s annual selection of the best books for children worldwide.
