Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Justice Niall Collins has pledged to tackle the scourge of crime in Dublin.

Deputy Collins said: “The dramatic increase in crime in Dublin coupled with the Government’s policy of slashing Garda numbers has resulted in many people living in fear in their own homes, in businesses under continuous threat of

theft and anti-social behaviour on our streets.”

Fáil is “Fianna committed to tackling the crime epidemic in Dublin and ensuring that all citizens can live in safety and without fear.”

Deputy Collins was speaking at Leinster House after reviewing current crime figures with Dublin Spokesperson Senator Darragh O’Brien.

Deputy Collins said: “The most recent crime stats showed that burglaries in Dublin were up almost 15 per cent year on year. Rape and sexual assaults were up 15.4% with public order offences up 8.4%. This cannot continue.”

Senator O’Brien said: “Dublin has almost 700 fewer gardai in 2015 compared to 2010.

Fianna Fáil will reverse this.

He added: “We will establish a dedicated Garda Public Order Unit for the city centre to combat drug dealing and anti-social behaviour on the capital’s main commercial streets.

This unit would be present and visible on Dublin’s main streets 24/7 and have its membership numbers ring-fenced from all other Garda units.

laBour proposes 3 more months of parental leave

Labour is proposing that parents in Dublin South West get an extra three months of paid parental leave if it returns to Government, according to local Councillor Pamela Kearns.

She confirmed that the proposal is part of a major Labour plan to ‘drive up the quality of childcare and drive down the costs’.

“Fianna Fáil believes that now is the time to establish Community Courts in the capital to deal with low level offences such as vandalism, shoplifting and drug use. These courts would involve input from the local community and local businesses. Community Service Orders handed down by these courts would ensure that the offender would give back to their

community by carrying out work in the area where the offence took place,” concluded Senator O’Brien.

Deputy Collins added: “Fianna Fáil will also introduce a mandatory three year jail term for criminals convicted of burglary and a minimum of seven years on the third burglary conviction. We will also establish a Sentencing Council to promote consistency in sentencing.

“The fact is that we have a government that talks tough but is fundamentally soft on crime. That needs to change and Fianna Fáil will deliver that change.”

A new support group for parents bereaved by suicide has been set up

by Clondalkin woman Carol Cosgrove.

Carol lost her 21-yearold son, Daniel Dempsey, to suicide in September 2014 and sought out a group to help her cope through the grief of losing a child.

However, she was surprised to find that there were no services for parents who had lost a child to suicide – and immediately decided to set up a support group.

Although there were groups for families bereaved by suicide Carol believes it is

important to have a parent-only group were people whose children have committed suicide can speak freely and openly and approached the Dolcain Project to help spread the word.

Carol said: “The group is specifically for parents because it is easier to talk to other people who are in the same position. I was contacted by another parent two weeks after Daniel died and talking with another parent who had experienced it really helped.

“Because suicide is such a different type of death talking to another parent really helped me – I didn’t have to censor what I said, she wasn’t offended by it. A lot of

people don’t know what to say to you and some people won’t even say the word ‘suicide’.”

The first meeting of the new support group was held on November 23rd in Tús Nua on Nangor Road in Clondalkin.

There is also a Facebook page for parents who would like more information called Hope Parents Bereaved by Suicide.

Carol said: “The feedback so far has been quite good. There is a remembrance night at the Civic Offices in Clondalkin on Monday, December 21st and I am talking at that and then the next meeting of the group is Monday, January 11th.”

Carol will also host a play aimed at 13 to 25year-olds called Bring Me Back Alive in Bawnogue on January 22nd – with free entry for all.

The mother-of-three admits it has been a struggle since Daniel passed away with her two other sons, Sean and Jack, also trying to come to terms with their grief.

She said: “I have kept busy over the last year, that’s all I can do, but talking helps. It is so important to talk about it. And to let teenagers know that if they are having difficulty they should talk to someone – people are afraid to talk about suicide in case they give people ideas but we need to talk about it.”

The parents support group will meet again at the remembrance night in Clondalkin on December 21st and the next meeting will be held in Tús Nua on January 11th from 7pm to 8.30pm when any parent who has been bereaved by suicide is welcome to attend.

Crowe opens novas housing in firhouse

Dublin South West Sinn Féin TD, Seán Crowe, officially opened Novas’ Bellevue Children’s Home and Haarlem Court Apartment Complex.

Deputy Crowe said: “I was delighted to be asked to open Novas’ new children’s home and apartment complex.

“The Haarlem Court apartment complex comprises of eight two-bed apartments, which are special needs social housing units with all tenants coming from the South Dublin County Council lists. Some of the residents were formerly homeless, others have children with special needs or have physical disabilities themselves.

“The Bellevue Children’s Home is a six-bed service for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children entering the state. It is the only service of its kind

in the State.

“Each year 70 to 80 unaccompanied minors enter the state seeking asylum and we are all aware of the horrific situation in the Mediterranean, where hundreds of children have died trying to reach acquire refuge in the EU. Ireland needs to play its part in providing refuge to children fleeing war, famine, and oppression, and these services show positive leadership from civil society.

“This service is a beacon of light for vulnerable people, it is a good news story that all the local and national politicians are extremely proud of.

“Well done to everyone associated with this fantastic and much needed development.”

small-loan sCheme to ComBat moneYlenders launChed

Tánaiste Joan Burton T.D., and the Minister of State at the Department of Social Protection, Kevin Humphreys T.D., have formally launched the Personal Microcredit Scheme to help eligible borrowers struggling to access low-cost credit and thereby combat moneylenders.

The scheme, which has been driven by Minister Humphreys, will operate on a pilot basis for the next six months in more than thirty Credit Unions.

The scheme will see Credit participating Unions offer a new “It Makes Sense” loan to eligible borrowers who may otherwise be unable to access low cost credit. The pilot scheme is open to social

welfare recipients who collect their payment in cash at a Post Office and have access to the Household Budgeting Scheme as the loan repayment method.

The loan value will range from €100 to a maximum of €2,000.

The interest rate will be not more than 12% (APR 12.68%).

Speaking at the event, Humphreys Minister said: “The lack of access to low-cost credit for individuals and low-income households has long been a cause of concern and I am delighted to welcome this pilot scheme which will provide local, easily accessible and low-cost loans to those who need them. While this is a pilot scheme, the aim is to learn from the pilot

and make any required adjustments before moving to a full national roll-out. In addition, learning from the pilot will inform the further development of the scheme so that it can serve a wider audience who currently find themselves unable to avail of low cost credit.”

The Tánaiste said: “We developed this scheme to both assist lowincome households and combat moneylenders at the same time. We know full well the exorbitant and punitive rates charged by many moneylenders for which there is no justification.

This scheme is an important step in combating that situation, particularly in the run-up to Christmas, a financially

difficult time for many households. While this pilot only provides for small loans to social welfare recipients who are paid in cash at post offices, I am confident we will be able to roll it out on a phased basis for low-income households not in receipt of social welfare, and for social welfare recipients who receive their payments electronically. I am confident that all the stakeholders will rise to that challenge and I look forward to the scheme being extended to a wider range of borrowers who find themselves unable to access low cost credit.”

Paying tribute to the participating Credit Unions, Minister Humphreys said: “I want to thank all Credit

Unions which volunteered to be part of this initiative. I want to acknowledge the commitment and effort invested in the development of the Scheme.”

Minister Humphreys also acknowledged the important role played

by An Post. “I also want to acknowledge An Post’s role in the development of the scheme by facilitating repayment of loans through the Household Budgeting facility which it operates on behalf of the Department of Social Protection.”

The Pilot will be monitored and evaluated on an ongoing basis and it is intended that it will be rolled out to Credit Unions nationwide in 2016.

mep warns against eu plans for ChemiCal washes on ChiCken

Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has commented on revelations that the European Commission has proposed a new measure which will allow chemical washes containing peroxyacetic (PAA) acid, an antimicrobial rinse, to remove bacteria from poultry intended for human consumption.

Ms Boylan said: ‘Campylobacter is the most common cause of food poisoning in the EU which absolutely must be tackled but the use of chemical washes is not the answer.

‘Aside from concerns surrounding the actual efficacy of such chemical washes, consumers do not want to eat meat with these kinds of treatments and it ignores the ‘farm to fork’ approach.

‘There are serious concerns that the use of acid at the end of the food chain to decontaminate food for consumption will encourage lax producers to ignore the need to improve poor hygiene measures which cause the bacteria in the first place. Emphasis should be placed on prevention and improved hygiene along the food chain rather than using chemicals to make up for the lack of it.

‘Furthermore, such washes wouldn’t tackle the spread of campylobacter from chickens to humans by other pathways other than eating the affected meat.

At a selection convention held in Dublin South West last month, the AAA selected sitting TD Paul Murphy , and secondary school teacher Sandra Fay from Jobstown as a second candidate. The AAA said that it intends to maintain Paul Murphy's seat and to challenge for a second seat.

Paul Murphy TD said "The decision to stand two candidates is a sign of the growth of the AAA in the Dublin South West constituency, and nationally, and the political polarisation which is taking place in society. In 2014, the AAA caused a major political shock winning the Dublin South West byelection on the same day as first major anti-water charge marches which has

changed the political landscape in Ireland. We now intend to seriously challenge to take try to take two seats in the upcoming general election to give working class people a voice and a build a principled Left alternative in the Dail opposes coalition with any right-wing parties like Fine Gael, Fianna Fail, Labour or Renua.

“In 2011 people voted and elected two Labour TDs hoping for change but instead got sold out by the Labour Party who implemented vicious austerity policies.

be a political voice for the working class that none of the establishment parties represent.

"Despite the government talking about recovery, people continue to be hammered by austerity. We are on the verge of a victory on water charges. We now need to tackle the government on the other issues which affect people on a daily basis like the housing crisis - currently in Dublin South West there are 8,800 people on the waiting list, there is a homeless crisis and many hidden homeless because of rent allowance cuts and massive rent rises.

There are communities that still suffer mass unemployment and people who have suffered wage cuts. There are families suffering because of cuts to child benefit and lone parents.

"We will use the election to mobilise these into building a new movement for working class people that can challenge the rule of the 1%."

In light of South Dublin County Councils plan to increase the capacity of Tallaght Stadium to hold 8,500 spectators, Councillor Anne-Marie Dermody is calling on the South Dublin County Council Manager to open Tallaght Stadium as a concert venue.

candidate for Dublin South-West, said that “Opening the planned extended capacity Tallaght Stadium to concerts would be of huge benefit of Tallaght and its surrounding areas.”

The overall cost to extend the stadium will be €750,000 and will be fully funded by South Dublin County Council.

This extension will mean that 2,500 extra people can be held in the venue. The project will construct a north stand and architects are currently looking at the building design of stand.

The the construction of the stand will take place in 2017.

At the release of the CSO Retail Sales figures for October ISME, the Irish Small & Medium Enterprises Association, called on Irish consumers to buy Irish products from Irish SMEs, when shopping over the Christmas season. The Association reminded consumers that buying goods produced, manufactured and sold locally is the easiest way to support the Irish economic recovery.

Retail Sales figures for October show an annual increase of 6.9% in volume and 3.5% in value. When motor sales are excluded volume was up 5.8% and value was up 2.4% in the year. The monthly figures show a decrease, with a -0.8% drop in volume and a decrease of -1% in value in the month.

Commenting, ISME Chief Executive, Mark Fielding stated, "While the annual increase in sales is to be welcomed and other macro indicators show positive trends, the SME economy is still challenged and the retail sector is the main barometer. We are calling on shoppers to carefully consider where they spend their money. Buying

quality Irish from locally based stores gives a mega boost to the local economy. Every €10 spent locally on Irish products can generate up to €24 benefit in the local economy".

"Irish produce is synonymous with excellent quality and offers better value than imported goods. While consumers are understandably most concerned with value for money when making purchasing decisions, they can rest assured that buying Irish products from local SME retailers will meet their highest standards and boost the economy at the same time."

"It is also important that retailers label and display Irish goods prominently within their stores, to assist consumers in making the best choices. Irish consumers generally tend to want to support indigenous businesses and jobs by buying locally and it is imperative that retailers make this a seamless process."

"The Association is asking consumers to 'think quality local, think quality Irish to shift the balance' in favour of the home team," concluded Fielding.

Mayor Sarah Holland officially turned on the lights of the Christmas Tree in Clondalkin. Joining the Mayor were members of the public, fellow councillors and staff along with representatives from Clondalkin Tidy Town’s Committee and special guest Sr. Carmel Earls.

As well as the lighting of the Christmas tree Mayor Holland was on hand to acknowledge the contributions that Sr. Carmel and the Clondalkin Tidy Towns Group have made to the Clondalkin area.

Recalling the contribution that Sister Carmel has made to the area of North Clondalkin Mayor Holland said, “On her arrival in 1990 Sr. Carmel set up the Carline project for early school leavers to keep them focused on completing their education and achieving their junior or leaving certificates. Sr. Carmel is also a founder member of the beacon of light counselling service and she works tirelessly in the local schools and with St Vincent de Paul”.

Mayor Holland added, “We are honouring, Sister Carmel for all the hard worked she has carried out over the last 25 years while serving in the Parish of Neilstown and I would like for congratulate you on reaching her diamond jubilee”.

Representatives from Clondalkin Tidy Town’s Committee were also present on the evening and were acknowledged for the fantastic work that they have made during the year in the upkeep of this historic village.

Commenting on the great work done by the committee Mayor Holland announced, “The Clondalkin Tidy Towns group were awarded the National Tidy Towns Endeavour Award 2015 for achieving the highest increase in points in the whole of Dublin, with the support of South Dublin County Council and we look forward to a number of projects being undertaken in 2016.

These include the 1916 Commemorative Garden at Newlands Cross and the landscaping of the Camac River beds beside the Civic Offices. This project will complement the work due to commence at the Round Tower Visitor Centre” Mayor Holland gave special thanks to the Bright Side of Life Choir for providing wonderful songs and for adding so much colour and atmosphere to the evening’s event.

Finally, as First Citizen, Mayor Holland took the opportunity to wish all the Citizens of South Dublin a Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year.

new legislation to proteCt Children from seCond hand smoke

Fine Gael TD Catherine Byrne, has welcomed new legislation banning smoking in cars where children are present.

“The new law banning people from smoking in cars where children are present will come into force on the 1st of January. This will really help to protect children from second hand smoke.

“It was simply unforgiveable that people would smoke in their cars while children were present.

In such an enclosed space, children are subject to high levels of second hand smoke and all the associated health risks that come with it.

Children are actually more susceptible to second hand smoke than adults are.

“I’m sure some people genuinely thought that by opening the car windows, their children would not have felt the effects of the smoke. However this is not actually the case. The new laws will ensure that children traveling in cars are fully protected by removing any right to smoke in their presence.

“The new offence created by this legislation will be enforced by the Gardaí and carries a fixed penalty of €100 with the option of tougher penalties of up to €1,000 for failing to stop or providing inaccurate details.

“I commend the Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar for implementing this legislation as well as the Minister for Children, James Reilly, who has spearheaded this initiative from the start.

Both Ministers are committed to the Government’s Tobacco Free Ireland policy, which aims to have Ireland tobacco free by 2025.”

As the ISPCC launches a new Childline service, dedicated to providing emotional support to homeless children, it has highlighted the type of worries for children who find themselves in temporary accommodation Speaking at the launch of the new service, ISPCC CEO Grainia Long said, 'Losing a home is traumatic at any age, but for a child it can be extremely destabilising.

Childline is a national listening service, and our volunteers have lots of experience in supporting children through difficult times.

That's why we are launching a service that will give homeless children the opportunity to talk.

Some children miss toys that have been packed away, others worry whether Santa will find them in their new home, and some worry about noise and new environments.

Many children report feeling uncertain about the

future, and are often worried about their parents and siblings as they see the level of stress they are under.

The aim of a Childline service for children experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness is to give them the opportunity to talk about how it is impacting on them, to seek support and enable children to build their resilience and their ability to cope with a highly destabilising period in their lives”.

The service will provide non-directive listening; it is intended to complement child and family support services provided by other agencies and is not an alternative to one-toone support, which will remain a key requirement for families living in temporary accommodation. The new service is free of charge and available to children who are

homeless or at risk of homelessness from 10am to 4am daily.

The ISPCC is delighted to have the support of Focus Ireland and Depaul, as well as the Lord Mayor of Dublin who helped to launch the service today.

Lord Mayor of Dublin said; “ISPCC Childline is well known for the essential and excellent support services it provides to children in Ireland.

They are absolutely best placed to offer emotional support to children concerned about homelessness, which we know is a huge issue children and for families all over the country. I am delighted to help launch the Text Support service and wish the ISPCC Childline every success with it” Kerry Anthony, Chief Executive, DePaul said: Everyday Depaul sees the devastating impact homelessness has on families and especially children. Right now there are over 1500

children who are homeless in Ireland and while dedicated staff like those working in Depaul's family services offer daily help to families living in hotels or emergency hostels.

There cannot be enough support offered

to children at such a challenging time in their lives. Depaul fully endorses this new service being offered by ISPCC to children who are homeless. Talking about things like missing pets or being far away from school

and school friends, to what the future holds may be exactly what's needed for children to help them cope at a time of great uncertainty.

Local Councillor Charlie O’Connor has expressed strong support for the Council’s Business Support Grant Scheme and has called on South Dublin County Council to Management promote the availability of the scheme to local business.

County and ongoing close collaboration with business is a priority.

This is exemplified by the continuation of the “Business Support Fund” which next year has been set at c 1% of rates income at €1.2m.

• A fund for remedial works to industrial estates.

• A grant scheme for the refurbishment of vacant industrial premises for use as micro enterprise space.

• A rates holiday for LEO supported micro enterprise that locates in refurbished premises.

• A training programme for business based on their requirements.

Fianna Fáil candidate for Dublin Mid-West John Curran is calling on the Minister for Justice to immediately implement the recommendations of the Garda Inspectorate which was Report released yesterday.

“The Inspectorate has made 81 recommendations which need to be implemented as soon as possible,” urged Mr. Curran.

“The Report comes at a time when the latest Garda figures show that over the past five years

numbers in Garda Dublin have been reduced by 693 while crime figures have spiralled in the region.

“Muggings, or Theft From a Person as they’re described in the statistics, are up 81.2% between 2011 and 2015 while Sexual Offences are up 23.6% and Burglaries are up 22.1%

for the same period.

“It just doesn’t make sense that there are fewer Gardaí on the street while crime figures are increasing.

Seven Garda stations have been closed in the Dublin region in recent years, there are 693 fewer members on the force, which is a decline of 16% in Garda

numbers.

“Fianna Fáil welcomes the publication of the Garda Inspectorate We are Report. committed to a Garda Siochána that is active, visible and effective in communities nationwide.

Having been left more isolated and more vulnerable by Fine Gael and Labour

cuts to garda resources, communities need to know that the law is on their side.

“We will work to ensure that the use of the Garda resources is maximised so that people in the Dublin region and throughout the country, can have faith in policing in their communities. Sadly the

latest crime figures show that current policing poliicies are not working.

“The Report says that at least 1,500 and possibly up to 2,000 fully trained gardaí could be taken out of offices to police the country. This option needs to explored fully,” urged Mr Curran.

35 groups from across the county joined Mayor Sarah Holland at County Hall, Tallaght for the launch of South Dublin County Council’s 2016 Centenary Programme of Events.

The Ireland 2016 programme marks the centenary, with a year long programme of events in which everyone is invited to participate. A key strand of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme is that of Community Participation which is being led by local across the authorities country.

The Council’s Commemorations Fund provides financial assistance to enable communities to adapt the National programme strands at local level. It is vital that individuals and community groups across South Dublin

It is important that ideas and creativity are fostered across the spectrum of community life: from History and Heritage, sporting organisations, arts cultural groups, and voluntary organisations and youth groups.

by Lynda o’donoghue donnelly It has been a whirlwind year for businessmen Michael McKenna and Joseph Prendergast who opened up the first Hamptons Floorstore in October 2014.

One year on the two men have opened up their third store in Tallaght, right next to the Tallaght Luas stop.

Michael said: “We opened up in Tallaght on Friday, November 20th. It is our third store, we have a place in Crumlin, 8 St Mary’s Road and a shop at 97 Malahide Road in Donnycarney.”

Michael and Joseph have created 14 jobs since opening last year with four new positions in Tallaght and Hamptons are still hiring.

With eight staff across the stores and six fitters currently on the books Michael explained that the expansion means more jobs.

He said: “At the moment we have four staff hired in Tallaght but we are looking for more people. We hope to take on more fitters in every store.

“We saw a big opening in Tallaght because there aren’t many floor stores around the area.

We hope to expand further in the future and open more shops.

We have our eye on a

few locations but can’t say too much more.”

One of the biggest draws for customers is the impressive opening deals at the Tallaght shop as well as a fantastic range of Christmas offers across the other stores.

In addition to this Hamptons Floorstore clients also get an indepth service from staff according to Michael.

He said: “Customer service is important for us, we educate people about floors before they buy because not

many people know about the different products.”

The huge success of Hamptons Floorstores over the last 12 months is mainly down to the “hard work” of owners Michael and Joseph – and the two businessmen are not ready to stop.

In addition to hiring more staff in the coming months and scouting different locations for a fourth store the men are also keeping a close eye on the existing business.

Michael explained that the location in Tallaght drawing more is customers to the shop and helping to keep the business visible.

Hamptons Floorstore currently offers laminate flooring, solid wood flooring, engineered flooring, carpets and vinyl.

Last Christmas, we had a special arrangement with Santa Claus whereby he would say a quick hello to our five year old twin daughters while he was delivering the presents around midnight. I waited with the children on the landing until we heard Santa come down the chimney. We then ran down to greet him. Our two dogs, Bert & Ernie, burst into the sitting room ahead of us and although, normally they are very nervous of strangers, they both jumped onto Santa Claus, licking him and barking in delight. Unfortunately, their welcome was so effusive that they knocked him down and he in turn fell against the Christmas tree, knocking it to the ground. Thankfully, Santa was very quick on his feet and he ran into the kitchen with the dogs behind him and came back in to the sitting room, closing the door behind him. Santa was most good-humoured about it and explained to the girls that the previous year, he had spent quite some time playing with the dogs and that that was how they had remembered him. The girls were delighted with the story and the meeting was very successful in the end. I would however like to caution all parents to keep their dogs in a separate room in the event that you should be so lucky as to have a personal visit from Santa Claus. He does seem to be a great dog lover but that can have its drawbacks and when my husband came home later that night, it took both of us some time to restore the tree to its former glory.

A. This is very helpful for a reader to share this advice with all our readers.

This event ended well but obviously, it is very important that Santa is not injured in

Q. Last year, we had four stockings hanging off the mantelpiece, one for each of our two children and one each for our pet cat and dog. Fortunately, I went down early the following morning before the children got up, to check that everything was alright. I was surprised to see that Santa had confused the gifts, giving the cat and dog gifts to the children and vice versa. I also spotted however that a strange pair of glasses were left behind and I can only assume that Santa had taken off his glasses, perhaps to clean them after he came down the chimney, put them down, and could not find them again, hence the error with the stockings. Fortunately, I was able to change them around before the children woke up.

However, I did want to alert parents to the importance of checking the presents before the children wake up in the morning.

We cannot avoid being aware that Santa himself is getting a little bit older and we might need to double check that everything is in order before the dawn breaks.

A. Thank you for sharing this information with us. I think it is very good advice.

In addition, assuming that Santa’s eyesight is not what it used to be, perhaps parents and guardians should maintain some light in the sitting room to facilitate Santa filling stockings and leaving presents. Perhaps a picture of the owner of each of the stockings could be placed above each stocking, to facilitate Santa and make his job that little bit easier.

Again, thank you for sharing this with us and we wish you and your children a very happy Christmas.

Q. Last year, on Christmas Eve, we were woken to the sound of screaming .

My three children woke up with the noise. I asked them to stay in their rooms while I went downstairs to check what was going on. I cautiously opened the door to the sitting room and found my husband on the floor nursing his arm. Apparently, he had come to the rescue of Santa Claus who was being attacked by our neighbour’s cat. We

were looking after our neighbour’s cat for the holiday as they were away. She must have taken a dislike to Santa Claus and was lying in wait for him and pounced on him apparently as he was placing presents under the tree. My husband was a bit shocked but happy to report that he managed to save Santa Claus from a similar injury.

We subsequently relayed this story to our children and, although they were disappointed to have missed Santa Claus, they were very proud of their father who rescued Santa Claus from a grave danger. I just wanted to mention this to other readers as they too may be looking after neighbour’s pets for the holiday season and would not be as familiar with their temperament.

A. This is very helpful advice indeed thank you for same.

As previously suggested to readers, pets are best kept in a separate room during the night of Christmas Eve/ Christmas morning to ensure that neither Santa Claus nor any family members are either injured or frightened as a result of the activities of nervous pets in unfamiliar surroundings. May we wish you and your children a very Happy Christmas.

Q. When my daughter came down on Christmas morning to open her presents, she discovered that Santa had left his rig-out behind! It was left in the back kitchen but she discovered it before anyone came down.

She was very confused about that and very worried that Santa might have had to continue on his rounds without proper clothing. I just thought readers should take note and perhaps have a good look around the house before they retire to bed.

A. We have come across this before.

Santa travels with many spare rig-outs.

The weather is unpredictable at this time of the year and he can get a soaking going from one house to another. Probably, your daughter found the rig-out draped over a radiator and Santa probably changed into his new rig-out in your house. This is a very exciting thought for your daughter.

However, he obviously forgot to take the old outfit with him and it might perhaps be a good idea to leave this out for Santa with a little written reminder to take it with him this year. Thank you for alerting us to this concern.

Q. Every year we like to have a fire going on Christmas Eve to greet Santa and keep him warm.

Unfortunately, it seems as if Santa’s beard got singed in the fire as he was filing the stockings over the fireplace.

Fortunately, we had left a big bucket of water for the reindeer and Santa used this to put out his beard. He left a note behind asking us not to light a fire this year as he said that it has taken him a whole year to grow his beard back to its former length and he does not want any repeat of this episode. I would just like to advise all readers’ accordingly.

A. It is very wise of you to share this information with our readers. Open fires can be dangerous, even for Santa Claus.

Thankfully, however, he does not seem to have been too put out by this episode and I am sure that you will make the necessary changes to your living room this year. All readers should take note.

In the meantime, we wish you and all your family a very happy Christmas.

Q. My children, unknown to me, stayed up until the early hours of Christmas morning waiting to see Santa Claus arriving. To their surprise, they did see Santa Claus arriving but he alighted from a van at the front of the house and proceeded to bring in the presents with what looked like another male adult and not one of Santa’s helpers.

The presents were all delivered and they were very happy with them when they came down the following morning. However, they did ask me why Santa had arrived in a van?

The question took me by surprise at the time as I was not aware myself of any difficulties with the sleigh or reindeers last Christmas. Perhaps you could be of assistance?

A. We have made enquiries on your behalf and we have heard that the reindeer last year took a short break to have some refreshments during all the deliveries. Santa is always very thoughtful and considerate of his helpers. The nice man who provided the food and refreshments for the reindeer and elves, offered to help with some of the deliveries during the 30 minutes or so while the helpers were resting. Our enquiries revealed that your area was the place where Santa’s helpers all had their rest and the nice resident helped Santa to deliver all the presents to the children living in that area.

We have heard however that, this year, Santa will have two teams of helpers and, while one is resting, the other will take over. There should therefore be no repeat of this incident again and hopefully your children’s restlessness will be rewarded with the sight of Santa arriving by sleigh in the usual way. we wish all our readers a very happy Christmas this holiday season.

We have two facilities in Kilcuan, Co. Galway and Cois Cuain, Co. Wexford each offering different opportunities.

Dublin Senator Catherine Noone, has said that compulsory calorie counts on menus is now needed, after such a low voluntary take-up of the scheme by restaurants.

“An independent survey commissioned by the Department of Health has revealed that just 7% of food businesses are providing the

calorie count information on their menus on a voluntary basis. This is very disappointing, especially considering the fact that 95% of consumers in Ireland want the calorie count of meals displayed on menus.

“The recent Healthy Ireland survey showed that 60% of Irish people are overweight, so this

is clearly an area where action is needed and anything we can do to encourage healthy eating would be very welcome. We know, from experience in the United States, that calorie counting on menus is effective.

“I do know that this isn’t an easy change for businesses to make, but the Government is

When an office Christmas party is hijacked by German terrorists NYPD officer John McClane goes ‘yippee-kiyay’ to save his wife. A bit cheesy but a total classic.

There are a host of other Christmas movies which are perfect for relaxing with the family over the holiday period but these are some of our favourites for a great movie night in.

A spokeswoman for the Tallaght venue said: “We have the very best comedy acts touring to the Civic Theatre from December to March 2016. We will kick off the New Year with superb comedy from Apres Match on January 8th and Tommy Tiernan on January 9th.”

On January 29th the brilliant Deirdre O'Kane, who starred in TV show Moone Boy alongside Chris O’Dowd and award winning

Average PAYE tax refund €840: Medical Expenses, Tuition Fees and Rent Credit are most popular tax refunds

The year 2011 saw Fine Gael win the general election; Dublin beat Kerry in the AllIreland and Michael D win the presidential election. It was also the year that the controversial Household charge was introduced via Budget 2012; and that Ireland qualified for the Euros in Poland. However, Taxback.com say it was also the year that there was a lesser known change...

Barry Flanagan, Senior Tax Manager with Taxback.com explained, “One of the biggest questions you must ask yourself now is – did you pay your bin charges in 2011?! If the answer is yes then you need to know that this is the last year you can claim for this tax relief – and you have just a few weeks to do so.

Not only that but this, but we are also approaching the Dec 31st deadline beyond which you cannot tax relief

on any other expenses you incurred in 2011 – the top three of which are medical expenses, tuition fees and rent credit”.

Taxback.com say that though service charge relief is now gone people can still claim for 2011. A maximum of €400 tax relief is granted (at the 20% standard rate) in 2011 for service charges paid in the year 2010. The relief was being abolished for tax year 2012 and subsequent years.

Barry continued, “Our average PAYE worker tax refund is €840 – which begs the question – why, if you are entitled to it, would you leave it behind?”

Taxback.com say that many people still find applying for a tax refund confusing or complicated, resulting in them paying more tax than is necessary and losing out on entitlements. Revenue has made attempts to educate taxpayers as to

their entitlements to tax and reliefs. credits However, despite this they believe that there are still millions of Euro going unclaimed each year.

Barry continued, “By way of advice I would begin with telling people to be sure to keep doctors receipts, tuition receipts, and any correspondence from Revenue – all of these will make the tax reclaim process so much easier.

Also, there is no need to delay. Obviously you have to wait until after Dec 31st 2015 to claim any tax refunds for this year (unless you are leaving the country permanently). But you can retrospectively look at your entitlements from 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

It’s so much easier than people think. In order to assess an individual’s position you just need your PPS number and some

personal details. Depending on their circumstances you may also need copies of certain receipts”.

Taxback.com say 3 main reliefs have been changed in the last few years – but can still be claimed for:

· For medical expenses relief at 20% is still available and can be claimed on most unreimbursed medical expenses incurred and on qualifying non-routine dental expenses. · The tax credit for tuition fees is still available. For 2011, the relief does not apply to the first €2,000 of qualifying fees paid.

Similarly, for part time courses the first €1,000 is disregarded in respect of each claim. These amounts were increased to €2,750 and €1,375 respectively for 2014/2015. The maximum limit on qualifying fees remains capped at €7,000 so the maximum credit

available has been effectively reduced from €1,000 to €850. · The rent credit has been reduced to €160 for a single person in the year 2014 (€320 for married persons) and the tax credit is set to be phased out by the end of 2017. However, taxpayers still have an opportunity to claim the rent credit back to 2010 (for 2011 and subsequent years the relief will only apply if you were in rented accommodation on 07/12/2010) and should take advantage of this.

Barry went on to say, “Overpaid tax is also an area which results in many people receiving much welcomed refunds from the Revenue. This can occur inadvertently – especially if you have changed employment during the year. Individuals should look back on their income levy and USC payments to ensure

that they have not overpaid such payments in prior years and should claim a refund before it’s too late”.

Other tax reliefs and incentives which have remained available are: · Rent a room relief · Flat rate expenses for certain trades and professions · Exemption on income earned from caring for children in your own home · Employment and Investment incentive (EII) scheme · Capital losses are still allowable

Barry concluded, “In terms of timing – the length of time it take to get a refund is really dependent on how much information the person can give the Revenue from the onset – receipts etc. Generally it takes anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks to claim a refund”.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Catherine Ardagh is warning the public to be aware of a new spam email purporting to be from Electric Ireland offering customers a refund and to 'arrange payment' by sending their personal financial information.

Councillor Ardagh said "these cyber scams are becoming more regular and more sophisticated, people really need to have their wits about them when it comes to unsolicited emails, seemingly offering something that's too good to be true. In most cases, it is."

The email in question includes a logo which looks legitimate to 'Electric Ireland' and offers a specific refundable amount of money relating to a specific billing period.

Councillor Ardagh, who is a

solicitor, added: "For a lot of people who engage with their utility providers online now this type of email might not necessarily raise suspicions immediately. That's why I'm urging anyone who gets email correspondence purporting to be from a company that they use that they contact them by phone, verify their account details and check-in from there.

"It is extremely important never to enter on a 3rd party website or send via email your bank account information.
