Sinn Fein Councillor Mark Ward warns that introduction of pay per weight legislation may lead to a 43% increase in customers’ bills. The introduction of pay by weight bin charges on the 1st of July will result in larger families families with and special needs paying more. Councillor Ward says “The minimum charges for recycling may have been scrapped but it is a matter of concern
that the Minister has left the door open for companies to charge as much as they want. The bottom line is that collection companies will still be free to charge for collection of recyclable waste.” “Lets not forget that Bin Pay-By-Weight charges are still being introduced from the 1st of July 2016 and that all other charging systems will cease from this date” “The new system has
raised fears among constituents that bills increase could particularly for larger families and families with special needs.” “I have had Greyhound customers coming to me regarding the new pricing structures. These customers are environmentally friendly and use their bins correctly. Based on their use of their bins in April, the same waste disposal in July will mean over a 43%
increase. The black bin charge of 35c per kilo and the brown bin charge of 23c per kilo their charges will raise from €17 per month to €30.01 per month. An introduction of a new service charge of €3.25 per week is built into these costs.” “This is unacceptable for people already suffering financial hardships and is another stealth tax that ordinary people are expected to pay. Waste management companies are in the business of making money, so it beggars belief that they would in an agreement with a strategy that would see 90% of their customers pay less. Yet documentation on Greyhounds website are supportive of pay per weight measures. People who have medical conditions could be unduly charged extra under this scheme. I have received the results of a survey from Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland. They surveyed 152 members of their organisation and found that 89% have more waste due to the
