inequality on a daily basis.

The Dubliner, who works as a Disability Support Officer with the Rehab Group, described how for many years she struggled to “jump through hoops” to use public transport before finally being able to afford her own transport.

“If I or any wheelchair user wants to travel by train we have to book 24 hours in advance, so spontaneity is impossible. An impulsive decision to visit a friend in Galway simply is not feasible” said Eileen.

“If this convention is passed, it will mean that I will have the right to accessibility. I’m not looking for anything ‘special’ that anybody else doesn’t have in life.

“Instead of being second class citizens, people with disabilities need to be treated as equals and be given the same opportunities and dignity that everybody else has.”

Although the Government signed the UN Convention nearly ten years ago, it has failed to ratify the treaty, making it the only country in the EU failing to recognise the rights of people with disabilities.

Eileen asked for the country to get behind people with disabilities, just like they did for the marriage equality campaign.

“Anyone of us could wake up tomorrow and be affected by a disability, yet this issue is not prioritised.”

FEW IRISH PEOPLE ARE AWARE THAT WE HAVE A NATIONAL FAMINE COMMEMORATION DAY New Bill will fix the second Sunday in May as the annual National Famine Commemoration Day

“Most Irish people are unaware that Ireland has a National Famine Commemoration Day, and this has contributed to a scant awareness among younger generations of the causes and impact of the Great Famine in the 1840s.” said Fine Gael TD, Colm Brophy.

Deputy Brophy made his comments during debate on his National Famine Commemoration Day Bill 2017, which came before the Dáil recently.

National Famine Commemoration Day was first introduced in 2008 with the aim of creating one dedicated day in the year for Irish citizens and diaspora around the world to reflect on one of Ireland’s most significant historical events, which resulted in the death of one million people from starvation.

“Unfortunately now, nine years on from the first National Famine Commemoration Day - all too few people in this country even know this National Day exists. Very few talk about this event and even fewer children in our schools learn about this day when they study the Great Famine as part of the school curriculum.

The Bill will ensure this event is given due status and recognition, and will fix the second Sunday in May as the annual National Famine Commemoration Day. “The Great Famine marked a watershed in our history.

It was not inevitable that Ireland would suffer this famine but a combination of circumstances and inept response by the British administration combined together ensured that the Famine would turn into one of the greatest tragedies of the 19th Century.

NEW ACTION PLAN ON INSURANCE MUST REDUCE PREMIUMS NOT LEVEL OFF RECENT INCREASES

Speaking in the Dáil on the Report of the Rising Cost of Motor Insurance, Deputy Curran said: “The continuing rise in Insurance Premium’s has to stop. It is simply not enough to level off the recent increases in the Cost of Motor Insurance and not reduce Insurance Premiums.

We must reduce Insurance Premiums and we must reduce them now.

“People are contacting my office on a weekly basis to complain about rising insurance costs. We have seen extraordinary premium increases over the past number of years, and despite the issue generating interest in the media, the Government has been slow to take any action to address the problem. Fianna Fáil

can afford to have a car at all. Businesses are also being hit, with these rising premiums squeezing profits and risking jobs.

“I’m worried about the timeline being reported regarding the implementation of the Government’s proposals.

It has been suggested that it could take as long as 18 months before certain measures, such as the creation of detailed databases to combat fraud, are implemented.

This indicates that the Government simply is not giving this crisis the attention it needs.

“I’m calling on Minister of State Eoghan Murphy TD to take charge of the situation and ensure that these proposals are implemented without delay so that the rip-off culture which has perpetrated the insurance industry over the last few years is effectively tackled”. concluded Curran.

COUNCILLOR ENSURES STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES CAN COMPETE IN CROSS COUNTRY

In 2016 Cllr Casserly approached South Dublin County Council about the possibility of including a Paralympic section to the Schools Cross Country Programme in an effort to give students with a disability an equal opportunity to qualify for competitions.

The project was piloted in schools across the county with huge interest from students with disabilities attending mainstream schools, to the delight of the Fine Gael councillor.

Cllr Casserly said: “The introduction of the

Paralympic section has opened up so many doors for students & is a huge step towards total equality for children with disabilities.

“I want to commend South Dublin County Council Sports and Recreational Department on the success of the recent Schools Cross Country events, I believe they have broken the mould by introducing a new category for Paralympic school going children – making the event inclusive for all who chose to participate.”

Cllr Casserly’s son, James, attends Scoil Áine in Lucan and is passionate about sports. The 10-year-old has

Cerebral Palsy & Juvenile Arthritis and is determined to compete alongside his school friends.

“The addition of the Paralympic section means that James, along with other children who are interested in sports, have the opportunity to compete in the same way as their friends & peers.”

South Dublin’s Primary Schools Cross Country Programme has grown in recent years with 67 schools set to take part in the 2017 programme.

According to the council the Paralympic section has “developed & grown”

since it was first introduced & there is currently a Paralympic section in three out of the four local cross country event venues.

This development means that children with a disability that are in mainstream schools can

now participate alongside their classmates in the cross country programme.

This year the Paralympic Section will be classified into different groupings – catering for Wheelchair users, those on walking frames, and those that are

ambulant.

A spokesperson for the Sports and Recreational Department of the council, said: “The feedback has been extremely positive to this element of what is already a very successful programme.”

Over the past year, four separate attacks of vandalism have been carried out at the KHOS Nitro racing track in Tymon Park and in the latest attack the public toilet facilities were destroyed by fire.

Cllr Mick Duff has also put down a motion at the Tallaght Area Committee calling on Sourh Dublin County Council to relocate the Dog-Play-Park from its current unsuitable location to a site on the Tymon side of the Park. The current site is located at the bottom of a slope, on the Limekilin side of the park and the Dog-Play-Park is constantly flooded as a result of water coming down the slope.

“There are at least three sites on the Tymon side of the Park which are on level ground and would be a more suitable location. Cllr Duff said he had received numerous representations from dog owners who use Tymon Park every day and are upset that they cannot avail of the Play-Park due to its condition.

Cllr Duff, who campaigned since 2009 for a new Playground to be built in Tymon Park said that he was fearful that the new Playground would also be destroyed unless the culprits behind the current wave of vandalism are caught. IMMEDIATE COMMENCEMENT OF NEW SEXUAL OFFENCES LEGISLATION IN ORDER TO PROTECT CHILDREN CALLED FOR Fine Gael Dublin Senator Catherine Noone, has called for the immediate commencement of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Bill, which was enacted recently, which she says will greatly

help to protect children, particularly with the rise in popularity of potentially dangerous apps.

“The Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Bill is a really welcome piece of legislation,

which is going to greatly strengthen the powers of Gardaí in protecting children from online grooming. I commend my colleagues, the Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald for introducing the legislation, as well as

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson for Dublin, John Lahart has said that a State education for all children, without reference to creed or the lack of it, is a human right. It has been reported that at present about 96% of primary schools are denominational and in the position to give priority enrolment to children of their religious faith.

Deputy Lahart was responding to a recent debate about reforms being considered by Education Minister Richard Bruton to reduce or remove links between faith and school enrolment in Dublin.

“Entry to most of the schools across the Capital is heavily over-subscribed and forced to use the baptism barrier

to deal with a significant demand for classroom places,” explained Deputy Lahart.

“The UN Committee on the rights of the child recommended that the State significantly increase the number of nondenominational or multidenominational schools to provide greater alternative choice and to also amend the existing legislative framework to eliminate discrimination in school admissions.

“All schools in receipt of State funding should be fair and inclusive in their admissions policies. Our schools should reflect the diversity of our families and our communities ensuring that no child can

be discriminated against because of their religion.

“In one busy area of South Dublin, there is currently no primary school for a population over 4,000 people.

It is growing increasingly apparent that the core issue in Dublin is one of resources and the need to create more classroom places through the opening of new schools, or the expansion of existing ones.

“Until there is a greater level of patronage diversity, the difficulties and anxiety faced by parents of young children nearing school age will continue and our school system fail to befit the educational needs of our children,” concluded Deputy Lahart.

“This legislation is needed now more than ever with the rise in popularity of mobile phone apps which are being misused by teenagers and even very young children.

“As reported, some apps which are intended to be friendship apps, are being used by teenagers to share explicit photos.

“Some of these apps

are supposedly aimed at children aged 17 and over.

However, in some cases new users are able to sign up for membership despite indicating they are under the age of 17.

“Moreover, there is no facility to verify users’ ages, while users can specify a preference for meeting new people who are as young as 13. This poses a glaring risk in terms of perpetrators to targeting young teens.

“This problem highlights

the immediate need for the commencement of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Bill and I look forward to it being utilised to protect children from online grooming.

REPORT ON DEVELOPMENTS IN THE GAMBLING AREA COMMENDED

Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan has commended a recent report by Dr Crystal Fulton of University College Dublin which looked at global trends in the gambling industry and is intended to influence and help shape policy and future legislation.

MEP Boylan said: “This 140 page report by Dr Fulton, prepared for the Department of Justice, covers a range of areas, specifically international legislation, gambling industry mergers, services provided to problem

gamblers and gambling technology.

“It is a comprehensive and informative piece of work which again raises many issues around problem gambling and the conduct of the gambling industry in the absence of ample regulation and oversight.

“In particular Dr Fulton highlights an issue which I have raised in the past, that a lack of regulation for advertising, in particular online advertising, can present problems for at-risk and problem gamblers.

“Some simple changes that could be made to the advertisement of gambling in Ireland would be the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland implementing a 9:00 pm watershed, as is the case in Britain.

“But we need to go even further than that.

In particular we need to offer better protection to young people given that the Institute of Public Health in Ireland estimate that adolescent gambling is two to three times the rate of

adults.

“The online industry uses sinister techniques to manipulate its users, making young people particularly vulnerable.

Incessant promotions are used if there is a period of inactivity and its users are specifically targeted on other social media platforms.

“The same online gambling industries are happy to put in place restrictions on users when they are being too lucky but are not prepared to implement similar restrictions when problem gambling patterns emerge.

“The issue of problem gambling is not a minute issue, recent studies have shown that Ireland has the third highest rate of gambling losses in the world per capita, and over 50% of those losses is through online gambling.

“Ireland’s Institute of Public Health believes that there could be as many as

40,000 problem gamblers in Ireland, with an additional 400,000 Irish people whose lives are being negatively affected by their friend or family member’s addiction.

“As outlined in Dr Fulton’s report, we need to build on existing legislation and bring forward new legislation to help regulate the gambling industry, not in a punitive way, but rather in a way that allows the industry to exist while protecting vulnerable and young people.

Fianna Fáil Councillors on South Dublin County Council (SDCC) are calling on the Minister for Health to respond positively to requests for extra beds which have emanated from Tallaght Hospital management.

Following on from comments

by Tallaght Hospital CEO, David Slevin, in which he asked for community support in ensuring the provision of 72 extra beds to the hospital, in the past month Fianna Fáil councillors Charlie O’Connor (Tallaght Central) and Paul Foley (Templeogue/ Terenure) have placed motions before the Regional Health Authority and SDCC seeking to put pressure on

the Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD, to supply the necessary funding for expansion.

“My associations with Tallaght and Tallaght Hospital are long held and well known both locally and nationally.

It is incumbent upon me and all community and public representatives to support the hospital which provides an important service here on our doorsteps,” said Charlie O’Connor, “this is why I have chosen to spearhead a campaign of support for the hospital expansion.”

The current proposal is to build a new five-storey unit on a greenfield site on the hospital campus.

Councillor Paul Foley added “I have been working with

The Road Traffic Bill passed in late 2016 makes it illegal for motorists to drive while under the influence of drugs

including cannabis, heroin, cocaine and a range of benzodiazepines.

“Drug-related behaviour has been linked to many traffic incidents nationwide; particularly in recent years as poly-drug use has increased. In a study undertaken by the County Kildare coroner in 2014, over 1,300 samples from drivers were analysed for drugs, of which 58% tested positive.

Some 52% were positive for two or more drugs,”

explained the Dublin based TD. “The new powers given to Gardaí will better ensure that dangerous drivers under the influence of drugs and at risk to the public are kept off the road.

“These tests will provide a valuable opportunity to highlight the dangers and serious risks that drug driving pose. The Road Safety Authority must now establish an effective public awareness campaign in the

lead up to Easter, to support the introduction of these tests.

“This is just one of the suite of critical measures aimed to reduce the number of fatalities and accidents on our country’s roads.

All relevant stakeholders including drivers and the wider public must take responsibility for promoting safe driving and ultimately save lives,” concluded Deputy Chambers.

ESB Apprenticeship Programme seeks expressions of interest ESB Networks are recruiting electrical apprentices during March/April 2017

John Curran TD is encouraging young people, who are interested in attaining a qualification as part of the ESB Networks Apprenticeship Programme, to apply before April 2017.

As part of its commitment to recruit 300 apprentices between 2015 and 2020, the ESB have re-opened the application process for those over 16 years of age on 1st June 2017 and who have completed the Junior Certificate.

Training commences in September 2017.

EYE IN THE SKY NEEDED TO HALT ILLEGAL DUMPING “Planned crackdown must include drone technology”

Drones should be used to target illegal dumpers which are blighting green areas of Tallaght and surrounding communities, according to Dublin South West TD and Independent Minister, Katherine Zappone.

The Minister is asking that open spaces, parklands and remote parts in the foothills of the Dublin Mountains are prioritised in new Government plans to identify those dumping household rubbish, building and industrial waste.

The Department of

Environment is also planning to provide extra funding for enforcement officers and community initiatives.

Minister Zappone, who is currently involved in talks with Climate Change Minister Denis Naughten on the issue, says it is time that illegal dumpers were made accountable for their actions.

“The use of cameras by South Dublin County Council has proved effective in tackling the issue of illegal dumping in parts of our communities – but it is now time to update the technology once again.

In the coming weeks the Government will unveil new plans to end this scourge and I am asking that drone technology be used to gather video evidence from the air.

This would be of particular benefit in the remote roads, parklands and open spaces which have been targeted by those who have no regard for their neighbours or their communities.

I am asking Minister Naughten to ensure that the County Council and those community groups and organisations working to keep our local areas clean,

OLDER PEOPLE TO BENEFIT FROM REDUCED PRESCRIPTION CHARGES

Older people are set to benefit from Fine Gael’s new health legislation. That’s according to Fine Gael Councillor Brian Lawlor who is highlighting a new Bill which will see a reduction in prescription charges for 330,000 medical card holders aged 70 and over, as well as their dependents.

“New health legislation being introduced is good news for older people in as it will reduce their prescription charges. This means more money in the pockets of older people as they care for their health.

The Health Amendment Bill to Cabinet reduces the maximum charge for prescription

charges for those aged over 70 years with medical cards and their dependents. It will mean that from 1st March prescription charges will reduce from €2.50 to €2.00 per item and total prescription charges will be reduced from €25 to €20 per family, per month. “Fine Gael is working hard to protect the economic progress we have made, so that we can use it benefit the people who need it most. This includes older people, and we are working hard to ensure that that the fruits of our economic recovery are shared with them, across every region of the country.”said Cllr Lawlor

NATIONAL COMPETITION LAUNCHES FOR IDEAS TO SOLVE SOCIAL PROBLEMS – CASH AND SUPPORT FOR WINNERS

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS IRELAND have launched their 2017 Awards Programme, supported

by DCC plc, calling for applications from ambitious individuals with ideas to create positive social change in Ireland.

‘Don’t let a good idea go to waste’ is the call from the organisation which seeks the most innovative ideas and energetic entrepreneurs to solve social problems in Ireland.

Speaking at the launch of the competition, Darren Ryan, CEO of Social Entrepreneurs Ireland said: ‘We support people who have an entrepreneurial drive, people who think big and have the ambition and energy to see their ideas realised, so that the social problem they are tackling may one day be a thing of the past.

If you have an idea or project to make a positive impact, apply to us. If we believe in it, we’ll back you.”

Social Entrepreneurs Ireland announced a whole range of supports for social entrepreneurs from start-up to scaleup. The call is for people with early-stage ideas right through to people who are ready to grow and scale their existing organisations, to apply at socialentrepreneurs. ie.

Previous winners include Iseult Ward and Aoibheann O’Brien who had the idea for FoodCloud – an app that connects shops with too much food with charities who need it; John Evoy who had the idea for the Irish Men’s Sheds Association – a place in the community for men to connect and create meaningful projects; and Dara Connolly with the idea for ReCreate which takes unwanted materials from businesses and turns them into art materials for schools and families that couldn’t otherwise afford them.

The eight Award winners will join Ireland’s largest network of social entrepreneurs. As well as an immediate 10,000 euro in unrestricted funding, they will receive a place on an accelerator programme worth 15,000 euro, with access to over 150 pro-bono supporters, coaches and mentors.

The programme will explore options for further funding and support from Social Entrepreneurs Ireland, which historically ranges from 20,000 to 300,000 euro in value.

Local Councillor Charlie O’Connor has called on Council Management to enter into consultations with the local community regarding the need for a solution to the issue of the so called Laneway at Raheen Estate/ Whitebrook Estate in Tallaght.

He said that the matter has been under consideration for over 20 years and that the difficulties experienced by local residents are regularly highlighted by reports of alleged crime and anti-social behavior.

According to Charlie O’Connor he has

raised the matter once again with Council Management and has been briefed as follows: “I refer to your most recent representations received in relation to your request for an update regarding extinguishing the public right of way at Raheen/ Whitebrook. A signed petition was submitted to SDCC on the 16th October 2013 from the residents of Whitebrook opposing the closure of the laneway at Raheen/ Whitebrook. In order for a report to be brought to the Elected Members for proposed extinguishment of the public right of way at

this location, consensus to the proposed extinguishment is required from residents of both estates. To date, this consensus is not forthcoming. If and where consensus is agreed and the public right of way is extinguished, the Council will arrange to fence off the site and will continue to maintain the enclosed area.”

He has also asked the Council to confirm if a request from residents for CCTV and public lighting in the Laneway is being considered.

LITTER ISSUE RAISED

Local Councillor Charlie O’Connor has asked Council Management to evaluate the most recent IBAL report in respect of the problem of litter throughout our area.

He raised the matter at the February meeting of the Council and was given the following report: “The IBAL Report January 2017 recorded an excellent showing for Tallaght, which was heavily littered in the past.

Seven of the ten sites surveyed got the top litter free grade. The particularly good top ranking sites included a residential area, Tallaght Library & Environs, Tallaght Stadium and Tallaght Square Car Park at Entrance to Tesco – these sites were litter free and freshly presented and maintained.

While Sean Walsh Park received a Grade A status.

(Inset) Regrettably the worst site recorded was that at the recycle facility in the park, a location which, despite significant efforts, continues to pose difficulties for the Council.

Through Public Realm operations the Council is focusing on a town and village cleansing programme in all town and village centres

on a daily basis Monday to Friday and also on Sundays.

Litter bin and cleaning service takes place in some parks (including Sean Walsh Park) over bank holiday weekends, and a review of litter bins (including capacity and location) is nearing conclusion.

New staff appointed to the Public Realm Section during 2016 was assigned to village maintenance work and it is intended to extend this service in 2017.”

According to Charlie O’Connor it is important to appreciate that the control of litter is of great interest throughout our communities and he confirmed that, like many other public representatives, he receives numerous calls in respect of the matter.

He also added that the situation in Sean Walsh Park is of particular concern and he has called on Council Management to take effective action to deal with the litter problem in this important facility.

Q. My husband had an accident at work about 6 months ago. He was out of work for four months and was paid while out. However, he has only been able to go back to light duties since then and I worry about his future ability to work at full capacity. His Employers have continued to pay him but he is still not fully recovered as he was hit in the back by a forklift being driven by a very young lad. Can he make a claim even if his Employers are paying him?

A. Anybody who has been involved in an accident resulting in Personal

Injuries can consider bringing an action for damages for compensation as a result of those injuries. This however is strictly dependent on being able to establish that somebody is responsible for the accident and was negligent thus causing the accident. The description you give of your husband’s accident certainly suggests that his Employer was responsible for failing to adequately train the forklift driver. Even if the accident was unintentional, as I assume it was, nonetheless, there still exists a claim as no employee should expect to be hit by a forklift while carrying out his normal duties.

As with all personal injuries cases, your husband has two years from the date of the incident in which to bring a claim.

Remember however that to lodge a claim, his Solicitor will need a completed medical report and it can take some considerable time to obtain this. You would really need to start the process fairly soon so that there is time both to investigate the circumstances of the accident and to ensure that any witnesses do not forget what happened. Our advice therefore is to encourage your husband to go and see a Solicitor with a view to giving instructions to pave the way for a personal injuries action. The fact that his Employer is continuing to pay his wages does not have any impact on the right to bring a claim and only means that the loss of earnings part of the claim does

Q. Our six year old daughter was a passenger in our car which was involved in a collision with another car. Our daughter was very shocked and upset and has been very anxious about travelling in cars ever since.

Thankfully, there were no serious personal injuries but I am concerned about her anxiety levels whenever she has to travel in the car. My husband was driving at the time and the damage to his car was only settled on a 50:50 basis as his insurance company deemed him to be 50% at fault. Does this mean that our daughter would only recover 50% of the damages?

A. Your daughter has an automatic right to claim for personal injuries in circumstances where she was a young innocent passenger in a car. I am assuming that she was strapped in. In those circumstances, her claim is both against your husband’s insurance company and the driver of the other vehicle, which I assume was also found to be 50% at fault. It is a matter for the insurance companies to work out who pays what but your daughter is entitled to bring a claim and will be compensated 100% for her injuries. We would recommend that you go to see a Solicitor immediately.

Q. My son was coming home late at night from town when he was knocked down by a car which failed to remain at the scene of the accident. Although there were witnesses to the accident, nobody managed to get the registration number of the vehicle. Would my son have a claim?

A. Under the provisions of the Road Traffic Acts, all innocent victims of Road Traffic Accident in cases where the driver remains untraced or uninsured, will be compensated for their injuries through the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland (MIBI). Every insurance company pays a contribution towards the MIBI which is a fund available to compensate the victims of untraced and/or uninsured drivers. It seems to me as if your son will fall into this category. The procedure to pursue these claims is slightly different than when one is pursuing the driver of an insured vehicle. However, the time limits are the same i.e. two years from the date of the accident.

Your son should be urged to see a Solicitor as soon as possible to commence the process and to make sure that witnesses to the accident are traced before they forget what they saw or move elsewhere and cannot be traced. I assume that the Gardaí are also involved and if not, they should be told immediately to make sure that every effort is made to see if any CCTV cameras in the area might pick up on the vehicle.

Launch of €300K - Have your Say! Participatory Budgeting

South Dublin Council Council is excited to announce the launch of the €300K -Have your Say! by Mayor Guss O’ Connell. Participatory Budgeting is an innovative democratic process which facilitates citizens in a local community to directly decide how to spend a portion of a public budget in their area. It gives people direct power to determine spending priorities to improve their community.

For 2017, South Dublin County Council has allocated an additional €300,000 for the pilot initiative in the Adamstown, Lucan and Palmerstown area. Residents through a combination of locally facilitated workshops and an online consultation are invited to submit their

spending priorities for this budget.

Chief Executive, Daniel McLoughlin added “this initiative builds on our already significant programme of citizen engagement. We are anxious to explore this process which has been used elsewhere across the world in the interests of local democracy.

While each area implements the concept differently, the fundamental rationale and basic process is the same: community members come together to brainstorm ideas, proposals are shortlisted, residents vote for their priorities and the local authority implements the projects chosen by the community”.

SEACHTAIN NA GAEILGE ATHA CLIATH THEAS 2017

Children and Seo Linn South Dublin County Council and South Dublin Library Services in partnership with Áras Chrónáin are delighted to bring you this year’s Seachtain na Gaeilge Átha Cliath Theas (SnaGÁCT).

This is a unique festival which highlights and celebrates our culture through music, dance, arts and of course our beautiful language.

The programme will run until 17th March. This year’s wonderful calendar of events includes a special concert by Kila, The Mayor’s Céilé, classes for all

levels, a workshop with John Spillane, traditional music sessions, and many other entertaining events, most of which are free of charge.

Mayor Guss O’Connell was delighted to have been given the opportunity to launch this programme, he said “As Mayor I get to meet with groups representing some 120 different nationalities that now comprise South Dublin County, I encourage them to do two things. First, to hold onto their language song and dance, and secondly

to get to know and appreciate the language, songs, dance and culture of ancient Ireland that is still as vibrant as ever.

I also urge my fellow Irish men and women to join in celebrating what it means to be Gaelic by doing something new, however small, to remain in contact with our ancient roots.”

27 TALLAGHT YOUNG PEOPLE SERVICES TO RECEIVE €1.75M Local services for children and young people in Tallaght are to receive over €1.75 million for the next 12 months, according to Dublin South West TD and Independent Minister Katherine Zappone.

The funding is an increase of €83,000 on last year.

It will be targeted at those communities in Tallaght with the youngest populations.

Announcing the funding Minister Zappone said: “Vibrant sports, arts and youth support services are very important to ensure our young people live active and healthy lives.

As Minister I am determined to reverse the cutbacks of recent years and this extra money is the first step.

The money is being distributed to local services in Tallaght from a number of funds – including €710,000 for Special Projects for Youth, €920,000 for children at risk of substance abuse and €125,000 for Local Drug Task Forces.

The Killinarden, Fettercairn and Brookfield Community Centres will all benefit as will St Marks Centre. Others which have been identified for support include the Tallaght Youth Service and Services to Young Travellers.

The increases which have been secured are significant and do give each service an opportunity not only to protect its existing work but also to reach out to support more children and teenagers.

Our local youth services are amongst the best in the country as the result of committed and passionate volunteers, workers and leaders.

They are transforming young lives and preventing our young people from falling into anti-social behaviour or even worse into the grasp of the merciless drugs trade.

In the coming weeks I will also be confirming increased funding for national organisations which are also active in our communities – including the FAI, Scouting Ireland and the National Youth Council.

As Minister I am determined that our on the ground services will get every possible support and work on securing further increases next year is already underway in my Department.”

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT 2017 - FROM NOW UNTIL 12TH MARCH

The ongoing recovery in the Irish economy is having a positive impact on the number, range and sales levels for Fairtrade products here.

Ireland’s largest coffee company, Bewley’s, is moving all of its own label coffee to Fairtrade by the end of 2017.

And an increasing number of smaller coffee companies are getting involved as well – these include the Kinsale Coffee Company, the Café Lounge and a special coffee for Inishbofin Island which last year became a Fairtrade island.

As well as this, retailers like Aldi have launched Fairtrade products like poinsettias and new bouquets of Fairtrade roses.

Speaking about the Bewley’s conversion to 100% Fairtrade, Peter Gaynor, Executive Director with Fairtrade Ireland; ‘This sets the new benchmark for companies in Ireland, if the largest coffee company in Ireland can source all its Bewley’s branded coffee on Fairtrade terms - then obviously so can everybody else. For too long companies have outsourced their

responsibilities to the end consumer asking them to ask for Fairtrade products – and yes of course we should do that as consumers – but companies have to take more responsibility themselves for what goes on in their value chain and make their own decisions.

This responsibility for what goes on in supply chains with developing countries extends to all the organisations who employ people and have workplace canteens. We have a Fairtrade@work campaign this year and we are asking government departments, local authorities and companies to join others like Waterford Institute of Technology and the Convention Centre in Dublin in supporting Fairtrade.’

Two visitors from the coffee cooperative SOPPEXCCA in Nicaragua, Heydi Janeth Espino Mairena and Haris Ulises Lopez Picado are visiting Ireland for Fairtrade Fortnight. The SOPPEXCCA coop in Jinotega has 650 members and is supplying Bewley’s Coffee Company with significant volumes of Fairtrade coffee.

Both Heydi and Haris were

born to coffee farmers and have worked on the diversification into cocoa production in the coop over the last four years.

At the factory they produce various chocolate products, and have just had their first export to the US and Germany. The factory is in the process of becoming Fairtrade certified.

Haris believes that Fairtrade has had numerous benefits to him, his family and the community. Thanks to Fairtrade Soppexcca can “pay higher prices for the coffee and offer special programmes for young people, training them in the cultivation of coffee.

The cooperative has set up various social projects, including the construction of a school. They have also improved the road from the town to the village and support the community when landslides occur (blocking the street). The cooperative are also running various environmental activities”.

Fairtrade Fortnight 2017 will take place from now until – 12th March and will be celebrated with a series of supporter events around the country.

Those who are staying home instead of braving the cold to enjoy the St. Patrick’s Day Parade will need some quality entertainment to keep them occupied.

We have selected the most memorable Irish characters, standout performances and odes to Ireland as part of our Top Five Films – St. Patrick’s Day… 1. Once – This Oscarwinning movie is everything we love about Dublin; the charm, the people and the inimitable streets creating a backdrop like no other for this heartwarming love story. Two strangers meet and bond over music, forming a real connection despite their very different lives.

2. In Bruges – Colin Farrell gives one of the best performances of his career as an assassin who is plagued with guilt after a hot goes wrong. Brendan Gleeson plays his older, wiser partner-in-crime who must make some difficult choices.

The scenery is stunning, the humour is dark and the performances are superb.

Definitely worth a watch.

3. War of the Buttons – This really is one for all the family, a classic to watch on the most Irish day of the year! Two groups of youngsters from two small towns engage in warfare – stealing and cutting buttons, belts, shoelaces and braces from their opponents and generally causing chaos.

A good old family feature with lots of good natured mischief and Irish charm.

5. Bridesmaids – Widely recognised as one of the most hilarious films of the last 10 years, Chris O’Dowd offers an Irish connection to the hilarious female-focused film. O’Dowd stars as an Irish cop living in America who strikes up a relationship with Kristen Wiig’s character, Annie. Despite her chaotic life, the two hit it off and form a hilarious and sweet bond.

4. The Departed – Although it is set in Boston there are plenty of Irish connections in The Departed. Starring lots of Hollywood heavyweights this movie is one of the best ever made. Both Jack Nicholson and Leonardo DiCaprio give unbelievable performances – the later as an undercover cop and the former as an Irish mob boss.

These five movies are our best recommendations for the Top Five Films – St. Patrick’s Day and are bound to keep you busy all day on March 17th.

So, whether you plan to paint your face green, collect shamrocks or simply pull on your Ireland jersey these gems will keep you entertained all day.

RED LINE BOOK FESTIVAL - CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS The Red Line Book Festival is one of the biggest literary celebrations in South Dublin and now is the time to get involved.

A wide range of different events based around books and literature take place across the country each year with the 2017 festival taking place from October 11th – 15th.

Participation is by invitation only with participants selected by the festival curatorial team.

This year the team is inviting submissions from writers/poets to participate in a recently established literary strand that will be programmed throughout the week of the festival, and which will compliment the existing literary strands.

The objective of this strand is to provide a “platform for emerging and established writers/poets to reach new audiences”.

The festival began in 2012 and has hosted some of the biggest names from the literary world including Alex Barclay, Dermot Bolger and Eileen Casey.
