Fairbanks has love affair with hockey F airbanks has a long, proud tradition with the game of ice hockey. We may not match the likes of Montreal, but in our own way we have a love affair with the game here on the edge of the Last Frontier. Photos from the early 1900s show a rink on the Chena River just downstream from the Cushman Street bridge. A mannequin in the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame at the Big Dipper Ice Arena is dressed in replica clothing to match a photo from 1906. The Hall of Fame also has produced a video containing film clips of hockey games played on the Chena as early as the 1920s. Teams representing Fairbanks, the University of Alaska and Ladd Field (now Fort Wainwright) played games against each other as well as Anchorage and Whitehorse from the 1930s to 1950s. UAF had a club level team during the 1960s.

An informal high school program began in the early 1960s. The sport grew strong at this level. There are now five varsity programs in the immediate area. Several state championships have been won by local high schools, the most recent of which belongs to Monroe Catholic. Recreational level leagues for men and women were formed in this same time frame and continue to thrive. Formal youth hockey got started in the early 1970s and was popular from the beginning. The organization was first known as the Fairbanks

Youth Hockey Association, which morphed into the Fairbanks Amateur Hockey Association (FAHA). Other youth hockey organizations followed, including the Arctic Lions and the Icebreakers girls program. The Icebreakers squad of girls 14 years or younger won a national title in 2012. Many players have used their youth hockey training as a springboard to play at higher levels. The Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame has a plaque at the Big Dipper which recognizes individuals who have played at the NCAA Division I college level. A senior men’s squad was created in the mid-1970s. The team was originally known as the Teamsters, but changed to the Gold Kings before the end of the decade. This program went on to win five national championships. The university club program gained varsity status in the 1979-80 season and now

plays in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. At the end of the 2010 campaign, the Alaska Nanooks earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament, losing to eventual national champion Boston College. A Junior program for players ages 16-20 was created in 1997 — the Fairbanks Ice Dogs. The Ice Dogs are now a member of the North American Hockey League. The Dogs won a USA Hockey Junior A, Tier II national title at the end of the 2011 season. Other notable events in Fairbanks’ hockey history include: • Hall of Fame goalie Ken Dryden appeared at the first youth hockey banquet. • Touring teams of retired players from the NHL played exhibition games in Fairbanks during the late 1980s. • The Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame was created in 2004, with the objective of honoring those individuals who

played key roles in the development of the game in Interior Alaska. • “Hockey Week In Fairbanks” began in 2006 as a community-wide celebration of our favorite sport. • The Stanley Cup came to town in February 2011 for a memorable 24 hour visit. Residents and visitors recognize Fairbanks as a “hockey town.” The purpose of this tabloid is to celebrate our community’s love of of hockey. The News-Miner publisher and staff salute the investment of: • “sweat equity” by players, • time and money by parents, • brain power by coaches and administrators, and • heart-felt commitment by loyal fans. May the love affair continue.

Randy Zarnke is president of the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame and author of the book Fairbanks Hockey Pioneers.

Each year, Hockey Week in Fairbanks kicks off with the unveiling of the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame commissioned ice sculpture to serve as a focal point for the 10day celebration of the sport. “Jim Warner has been our featured carver since we started this part of our celebration,” said Randy Zarnke, president of the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame. “Jim is a hockey guy and also has a great way of interpreting the action of the sport. We’re glad to have him as part of our team.” The unveiling ceremony is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday in front of the Big Dipper Ice Arena, before the Ice Dogs game against the Kenai River Brown Bears. The Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame also will be introducing its new mascot to the community. “We invite the entire community to join us for the unveiling and get Hockey Week started off right,” Zarnke said in a press release “Local media will be there, so it’s a good chance to get on TV,” Zarnke said. “Rush home after the game and see yourself on the late news telecast.” Zarnke said the placement of the carving near the Dipper recognizes an important partner in making the celebration a success. “Support from the Fairbanks North Star Borough and especially the Department of Parks and Recreation has been great over the years,” Zarnke said. Zarnke noted others played key roles in helping the mascot become a reality. “Thanks to help from Rod’s Saw Shop and Gary Georgell, we now have another fun addition to our community-wide celebration,” Zarnke said. “We hope everyone will enjoy this new feature.” Hockey Week In Fairbanks is sponsored by Emerald Isle Pull Tabs. Smooth ice Rink workers walked behind a tractor pulling a scraper, cleaned up the ice shavings and sprayed water on the ice. Zamboni figured there had to be an easier way to keep the rinks smooth. He invented the surfacing machine in 1949. In 1950, figure skater Sonja Henie ordered two machines for her tour. In 1954, the Boston Bruins became the first NHL team to use the Zamboni.

During the first half of the 20th century, Frank Zamboni and his brother ran a plant that produced block ice used in transporting produce. As refrigeration technology improved and demand for block ice dropped, the brothers needed another outlet to use their ice-making abilities. They directed their expertise to figure skating rinks. Keeping the rinks smooth was back-breaking work that took tremendous amounts of time.

The Hockey Hall of Fame has added two new “Celebrity Games” to this year’s schedule of events that are part of the Hockey Extravaganza that kicks off Hockey Week in Fairbanks on Saturday at the Big Dipper Ice Arena. The two new games will feature Squirt division players and the other will feature players age 50 and older. The Squirt contest will feature teams from Delta Junction and Healy. “These two communities are our nearest neighbors with organized hockey programs,” said Randy Zarnke, president of the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame. “We wanted them to experience the fun of Hockey Week, too. This has been a goal of ours for a couple years.” The Senior Game is an offshoot of the Alaska International Senior Games coed hockey tournament held each summer. “The local Senior Games organization began including coed hockey two years ago and they have a great time,” Zarnke said. “Unfortunately, they are limited to one short weekend in August. We wanted the community to witness the fun that seniors can have with the great sport of hockey.” Other Celebrity Games include: The Commanders’ Cup with teams from Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force Base going up against each other; the Guns & Hoses game matching local law enforcement personnel against local fire fighters; and the high school alumni game gives skaters another chance to defend the honor of their alma mater. Saturday’s schedule of games at the Big Dipper is: • 9:30-10:30a.m.: Squirts: Delta Junction vs. Healy • 10:45-11:45 a.m.: Alaska Seniors • Noon-1 p.m.: High School Alumni • 1:15-2:15 p.m.: Commander’s Cup: Army vs. Air Force • 2:30-3:30 p.m.: Guns & Hoses: Police vs. Fire Hockey Week In Fairbanks is sponsored by the Fairbanks North Star Borough Department of Parks and Recreation and Emerald Isle Pull Tabs. 12406837-2-13-13Hockey

For many years, hockey had a reputation as a brutal sport. Although that is no longer true, the belief still persists in a variety of ways. For example, the phrase “Give Blood ... Play Hockey” can be found on caps and T-shirts. Rather than disavowing this image, the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame and the Blood Bank of Alaska have teamed up to take advantage of the phrase. The organizations will conduct a blood collection drive in conjunction with Hockey Week In Fairbanks. Staff from the Blood Bank will be set up from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Big Dipper Ice Arena to accept donations from blood donors. Volunteers are welcome to donate any day during the event at the Blood Bank on Airport Road. To help encourage participation,

‘Jersey Day’ is a success Another event designed to put the community in the spirit of Hockey Week in Fairbanks is Wear Your Jersey to School (and work) Day, with everyone encouraged to wear their favorite hockey jersey to school or work on Friday. Students, staff and teachers in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District as well as all employees in Fairbanks are encouraged to wear their favorite jersey all day Friday. “We incorporated ‘Jersey Day’ into Hockey Week back in 2008 and it was an instant hit,” said Randy Zarnke, president of the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame. “Students all over the district enjoyed the chance to show off their favorite jersey. “There was wide participation at Woodriver Elementary School that first year,” Zarnke said. “There were hundreds of people wearing jerseys. It was great to see.” Ice Dogs General Manager, Rob Proffitt, has offered free admission to Friday night’s North American Hockey League Game for all children age 12 and younger who wear a jersey. “Offering admission to our game

on February 15 for kids under 12 with their jersey on is just our way of giving back to this great celebration of hockey that is kicking off on the 15th,” Proffitt said. Zarnke said the goal of Jersey Day is to generate enthusiasm in the schools. “We hope the students and teachers can transfer that enthusiasm into enhanced learning opportunities for all students,” Zarnke said. Originally started as Wear Your Jersey to School Day, local radio personality Charlie O’Toole recommended that the name of the event be changed to include adults, so the (and work) portion was added to the title. “Adults throughout the community are encouraged to wear their favorite hockey jersey to work on February 15,” Zarnke said. “We trust that employers will not object.” Hockey Week In Fairbanks” is the annual community-wide celebration of the favorite sport in Fairbanks. The event is coordinated by the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame. For more information, contact Randy Zarnke at 452-6857 or by email at itrap2@gci.net.

FAHA also offers a spring league and summer skills and drills refreshers to keep skaters active even when the regular season ends. Our Ice Dragon (4-6 year olds) and Mite (6-8 year olds) divisions offer an opportunity for beginning skaters to learn the great sport of hockey at a very affordable price. We offer rental gear for this division to help eliminate the need to purchase all new equipment while they are learning the sport.

FAHA Philosophy:

FAHA Goals: • A fair and equal opportunity to participate. • The opportunity for children to learn the basic skills without the distraction associated with an over-emphasis on winning. • An opportunity for new players who wish to play hockey. • An opportunity for those who wish to advance into a more competitive environment to do so. • A safe and healthy environment for all. • Qualified adult leadership.

The Fairbanks Amateur Hockey Association’s philosophy is to promote the growth of ice hockey and to provide the best possible experience for all participants by encouraging, developing, advancing, and administering the sport.

What is Tier III? Tier III means your child will be on a house team with other kids that are skating at a higher level. Your child will have the opportunity to participate in tournaments locally and around the State. Tier III teams may travel to 1 or 2 tournaments, in addition to playing in the State Tournament. Teams will play more competitive games. Tier III teams skate an average of 3 times per week. The cost is increased above the normal Tier IV house fees to compensate for the increase in ice time and lower number of players on the ice at one time.

Show some hustle!

It’s Hockey Week! Get on the ice and put the biscuit in the basket. Light the lamp. Nail a slapper between the pipes. Or grab a good seat and ring a bell. Pound the glass. Cheer for your favorite team. Alaska Airlines is proud to support Hockey Week, a multi-day extravaganza with games for boys and girls, little kids and big kids, police officers and firefighters, soldiers and airmen, college stars and celebrities. Alaskans do a great job of supporting Alaska Airlines and we’re very happy to be able to give a little back by supporting the community.

Come see us at the Big Dipper Ice Arena Saturday, Feb. 16.
