ABOUT READERS’ CHOICE
Thank you for your votes!
Congratulations to all our 2014 Readers’ Choice Winners! VOICE OF INTERIOR ALASKA SINCE 1903
RCSmallFiller14
Welcome to the 2014 edition of the Daily News-Miner’s Readers’ Choice Awards. We think this is the best one yet. And it was made possible by the many more people who participated this year, a turnout due in part to our introduction of online voting for this year’s awards. Inside, you’ll find readers’ choices for the best in various types of dining options, in entertainment, in sporting events, in personal and medical services, in education, and more. You’ll also find the best in a couple of fun categories, like Best Place for Dancing and Best Margarita, for example. And since it’s people that make everything happen, it’s appropriate that we’ve got all sorts of categories about the best people in various jobs and tasks around town. We’ve got winners in Best Waiter/Waitress, Best Bartender, Best Cashier/Retail Clerk, Best Principal, Best Teacher, and so on. We’re a community of “bests,” it seems. These Readers’ Choice Awards don’t exist, however, without you, the readers. So we’d like to know what categories you think we overlooked and what categories you think we can do without. Let us know. Drop us an email at editor@newsminer.com To our readers, thanks for participating. To everyone who made a “Best of ” list, congratulations. Rod Boyce Managing editor Fairbanks Daily News-Miner

Bjornstad has framed more than 100 homes, buildings By Amanda Bohman FOR THE NEWS-MINER
Adam Bjornstad was getting out of the U.S. Air Force and didn’t know what he would do next. His father-inlaw suggested he build himself a house. The experience opened the door to Bjornstad’s future. He started AK Builders in 2002. Since then Bjornstad has framed more than 100 houses and buildings around Fairbanks. He stopped counting a couple of years ago at 130 buildings. AK Builders does both residential and commercial work. Daily News-Miner readers selected Bjornstad as the area’s best builder in the newspaper’s annual Readers’ Choice contest. Bjornstad, who lives in North Pole, was born in North Dakota. He came up to Alaska in 1994 with the military. The 40-year-old husband and father of three said he
enjoys the reactions from neighbors of the buildings he is framing. “To see the people, when they go to work, there’s nothing there. When they come home, there’s half a house sitting there. It’s kind of neat to see their facial expressions.” Bjornstad said his focus is framing, trusses, stairs and floors—the kind of work he finds the most enjoyable. “I like framing better than anything,” he said. “I have built a lot of houses just me and one guy if I have the right guy.” The builder said most of his business comes via word-ofmouth. “I put out a lot of bids,” he said. “I don’t get a lot of them, but we always have a lot of work. We stay busy.” Bjornstad said his next challenge is making 50 acres of land off Nordale Road into a housing development. Contact freelance writer Amanda Bohman at aknewsgirl@gmail. com.

North Pole woman plans to expand 24-hour workout space By Amanda Bohman FOR THE NEWS-MINER
Tina Ferringer is looking to convert as many people as she can to a lifestyle of fitness and healthy eating. The North Pole native opened F & H Fitness Studio last year on St. Nicholas Drive in North Pole, and she is expanding to offer a 24-hour workout space starting in July. Ferringer received kudos from newspaper readers who voted her the best personal trainer in the annual Daily News-Miner Readers’ Choice contest. Eight women who train with Ferringer represented her studio at a bikini contest sponsored by the National Physique Committee on May 29 at Pioneer Park. The National Physique Committee hosts regional and national fitness competitions, including bodybuilding and bikini contests. The fitness organization

awarded Ferringer the Most Competing Athletes Award because her fitness studio had the most competitors. Ferringer said she was thrilled to get the trophy because it means the fitness devotee is attaining her goal of getting as many people as she can to be excited and motivated to be fit and healthy. “I know I am on this earth to help people stay healthy and fit,” the 31-year-old wife and mother of two said. Ferringer is a 2000 North Pole High School graduate. She has a bachelor’s degree in exercise sports science from Concordia University in California. After interning at a personal training studio, she decided to pursue it as a career. Ferringer is also a volleyball coach. Raven Riddle said she went from a size 10 to a size 1 after she started training with Ferringer. “I had a huge butt,” Riddle said. “I did not want to wear a bathing suit in front of people.”

Grooming business, expanded chicken section at pet superstore By Sam Friedman SFRIEDMAN@NEWSMINER.COM
It’s been a big year for Cold Spot Feeds, and not only because Readers’ Choice voters picked it as their favorite pet supply store in Fairbanks. Since moving in to its larger 22,400 square-foot store on Helmericks Avenue in 2010, Cold Spot Feeds had been something of an island tucked away behind the Johansen Expressway box stores. This year a city road expansion project opened up a network of roads that connects the store to both College Road and the Old Steese Highway. The improved road access has been good for business, “but not as much as you might think,” manager Tim Erickson said. “People always knew where to find us.” Also this year the store opened a dog grooming wing, complete with multiple cleaning tables and a quiet waiting room that doesn’t smell like dog. On the other side of the seven-bay warehouse is a greatly expanded chicken business. A spike among hobbyist poultry owners led the store to sell more than 1,000 chicks this year, Erickson said, more than twice last year’s inventory. Cold Spot started in a spare bedroom
The interior of Cold Spot Feeds’ store is pictured. Cold Spot Feeds was voted No. 1 pet supply store by News-Miner readers.SAM FRIEDMAN/NEWS-MINER in 1986 and has expanded in spurts. Owners Connie and Mark Dubay are longtime mushing supporters, and the business sells lots of specialized mushing gear such as harnesses, sleds and
specialized vitamins. The owner of Fairbanks mushing business Ramco Inc., is a Cold Spot employee. The Dubays still own the business. Erickson, who came to Fairbanks to
open the Fairbanks Walmart in 2004, became the Cold Spot manager in 2012. Today the business has expanded beyond dog food and mushing gear. It employees about 30 people and stocks more than 8,000 items, including some 70 varieties of dog foods, Erickson said. The only live animals it sells are chicks. Among the newest items Erickson is particularly excited about is a line of dog toys made to withstand tough chewing. The store now sells the horns of Indian water bison and some particularly sturdy synthetic toys. One item associated with Cold Spot that the store won’t be selling much longer is Crocs shoes. The store still has a wall display of the foam clogs and has long sold them because they were the only store in town doing so, Erickson said. Cold Spot is moving out of that business because the shoes are now found elsewhere and aren’t directly related to the animal supply business. “As a store our goal is to help direct our customers, to get them to be enticed to walking down an aisle” he said. “We run a pretty high inventory level but it’s necessary.” Contact staff writer Sam Friedman at 4597545. McPeak’s Badger Store employee voted best cashier By Matt Buxton MBUXTON@NEWSMINER.COM
Brian Walsh has a lot to say about what makes a good cashier and maybe that’s why Fairbanks thinks he’s the best. Walsh, who’s a clerk at McPeak’s Badger Store, took first place in this year’s Readers’ Choice contest as best cashier, marking the first time the 31-year-old has taken top spot among the community’s cashiers and retail clerks. “The key to success is to have a good sense of humor,” he said before hopping up to help a customer return a bottle of detergent. “There are so many people out there who treat retail jobs as just as a 9 to 5 paycheck,” he said. “I try to make myself familiar with my customers and make sure that they enjoy their time here. That they look forward to come in and see me.”
He then seamlessly broke from the interview to ask another customer “what can we get for you?” and answers some questions about the price of an item. “It’s an industry that’s always available and it’s something people are always going to be looking for excellence in,” he said. Then he rang up the customer. “And the total comes to $14.56,” he said. All the while, Walsh smiles, jokes and makes sure his customers have what they need. “The way I define excellence is if you can meet the customer’s needs as much as possible,” he said. “Success in customer service is always making sure your customer leaves satisfied.” Walsh is a lifelong resident of Fairbanks and has worked at McPeak’s for four years. The Nanooks and Seawolves split the four-game Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup Series in the regular season, but the Nanooks secured the Cup by winning a shootout following the fourth game at the end of the regular season on May 8. The Nanooks men’s basketball team finished third in the GNAC standings, compiling a 12-6 conference record and 18-10 overall mark. Head coach Mick Durham’s team advanced to the GNAC Tournament in Lacey, Washington, for the second straight year. The Nanooks defeated Montana State Billings 69-59 in a quarterfinal March 5 and were eliminated the next night after falling 73-52 in a semifinal against Western Washington, last year’s tournament champion.

Governor’s Cup is favorite sports event The Nanooks (18-15-4, 14-12-2 WCHA) and Seawolves (18-16-4, 12-12-4 WCHA) would meet in the playoffs on March 13-15. After falling 3-2 in overtime in the first game of the best-of-three series, the Seawolves responded by winning the next two games to advance to the WCHA Final Five in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This upcoming season, the Nanooks and Seawolves begin the Governor’s Cup on Jan. 16-17 in Fairbanks before meeting again on March 6-7 in Anchorage. The Fairbanks Ice Dogs North American Hockey league playoff run was voted the No. 2 favorite sporting event. The Ice Dogs went on to win the Robertson Cup with a sweep of the Austin (Minnesota) Bruins. The Ice Dogs finished the regular season with the best record in the NAHL at 45-14-1. The Arctic Winter Games was third in the voting. The bi-annual event took place March 15-22 in Fairbanks. It was an athletic and cultural extravaganza of nine circumpolar contingents: Alaska, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alberta North, Nunavik-Quebec, Nunavut, Sapmi, Yamal, and Greenland.
By Tim O’Donnell TODONNELL@NEWSMINER.COM
The Alaska Nanooks and Alaska Anchorage Seawolves have one of the biggest and most heated rivalries in college hockey. It’s why the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner readers voted the Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup series the best sporting event in Fairbanks. This past season the Nanooks claimed the Cup for the fifth straight year, winning in a shootout. The Governor’s Cup series had a different feel to it than in past seasons. For the first time, the Nanooks and Seawolves were in the same league, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, meaning it would be a fourgame series instead of a two-game series. The two teams split the first two games in Anchorage. The Seawolves won 3-2 on Dec. 6, while the Nanooks took the second game the following night by a score of 5-4. The final two games of the Governor’s Cup series were played in Fairbanks. The Nanooks won 7-2 on March 7 behind four goals from Cody Kunyk. When the Seawolves won 3-1 the next night, it meant the Governor’s Cup would be decided in a shootout. Defenseman Colton Parayko scored the Cup winner in the third round.

Watershed Charter teacher Marlene McDermot gets top votes By Weston Morrow WMORROW@NEWSMINER.COM
Between Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, Immaculate Conception Schools, home schools and other educational institutions, Fairbanks is home to hundreds of teachers. Of all those teachers, Marlene McDermot received the most votes, winning the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner’s category for best teacher. McDermot is a kindergarten teacher at Watershed Charter School. She doesn’t come into contact with an extraordinary number of students each day, but when it comes to the ones she does see each day she tries to make a real difference. She teaches a class of 20 students at Watershed. “It’s what everyone hopes,” McDermot said, “that they can be the right teacher for kids that they can provide opportunities and experiences that make them want to learn.” McDermot has worked at Watershed since it first had its charter approved by the school board and opened five years ago. Before that she taught third grade at Joy Elementary School. “I just think I’m better as a kindergarten teacher,” she said. “The kids at all ages are really wonderful to work with and they’re all great schools, but I just always felt I’d be a good kindergarten teacher. It just really fits me.” Watershed teaches a select number of students in first through sixth grade. It uses place-based education and focuses on science and nature in its curriculum. The school performed a sweep of sorts in reader’s choice, being voted best school and best principal for John Carlson. The school requires some sort of parent involvement, through volunteering or other forms of help with student education, which McDermot said may help engage parents and may have contributed to the school’s strong showing in the voting: “It’s so nice to know that (parents) were happy with what we did.”
Watershed Charter School was voted No. 1 in the Best School category by NewsMiner readers. The Best Principal, John Carlson and Best Teacher, Marlene McDermot also hail from Watershed Charter School. COURTESY WATERSHED CHARTER SCHOOL

Thick, spicy and the best in Fairbanks Oasis ups the game when it comes to a Bloody Mary By Gary Black GBLACK@NEWSMINER.COM
The Bloody Mary is a serious drink for a serious drinker. If you mess up a Bloody Mary, you’re liable to get banned from bartending brunch for life. That’s where the crew at the Oasis Restaurant and Lounge, 734 University Ave., come into play. Their bartenders know how to make a Bloody Mary, so much so that their bloodies took first place as Best Bloody Mary in the 2014 Reader’s Choice awards. “We put everything in there — horseradish, pepper, lemon juice, lime juice, spices,” said Monica Laakso, an Oasis bartender who knocks out Bloody Marys on a regular basis for customers. “Everyone who comes in says it’s the best Bloody Mary ever.” The Oasis isn’t just a one-Bloody Mary stop, either. In addition to the standard Bloody, the restaurant has several on its menu, including a Bacon Bloody Mary made with bacon vodka and real bacon, a Prawn Bloody Mary with shrimp, and a new behemoth they’re calling the Bloody Brunch — a Bloody Mary with a slider that includes shrimp, prosciutto, mozzarella cheese,
celery and asparagus. The Oasis debuted it on Father’s Day weekend, and it was such a hit it earned a spot on the menu. Oasis owner Curt Franklin saw a similar Bloody at a tavern in Milwaukee recently and decided to have his staff re-create one for the Oasis for Father’s Day. “They were a huge hit, and we decided to keep them,” he said. Even before the addition of the Bloody Brunch, the Oasis’ drinks were well-known among Bloody Mary fans. They’ve been a staple on the menu for several years, and now that the Oasis is branching out with other Bloody variations, the results couldn’t be better. “We’re pretty consistent,” Franklin said. “We sell a ton of them.” And while the Bloody’s ingredients are pretty standard — a healthy dose of your choice of vodka, some seasonings and garnish — there is something about the Oasis’ Bloody Marys that set them apart. “It’s love,” Laakso, the bartender, said. “We put a lot of love into our Bloody Marys. Much, much love.” Contact Features Editor Gary Black at 459-7504 or on Twitter at @FDNMfeatures.
