READERS’ CHOICE
Congratulations, winners of the 2017 Readers’ Choice Awards
T
housands of readers have spoken out about what they like best about Fairbanks’ restaurants, businesses, activities, entertainment, shopping, sporting events and service and medical personnel, and here are the results. A few of the categories have repeat winners, but there are some surprises scattered in, as well. What it shows, is how diverse and thriving Interior
Alaska’s businesses and activities truly are. It’s wonderful to scan the lists and seen an old favorite or find out about a new business. We try to make the choices in each business as comprehensive as possible, but if we left anyone out, please let us know so we can include it next year. Let us know if there are other categories you’d like to see next year, as well. Email digital@newsminer.com
We love what we do and appreciate the support of our community.
These Readers’ Choice Awards aren’t possible without you, the readers. Thank you for participating and we hope to see you again in 2018. Look for the 2017 Readers Choice certificates on the walls of your favorite businesses in just a few weeks. Julie Stricker Online Content Director Fairbanks Daily News-Miner

HooDoo brews for you: Brewery remains Fairbanks’ favorite HooDoo Brewing Company started as a college kid’s dream. Since then, the local microbrewery has served Fairbanks with five years of high quality beer and was once again voted our readers favorite brewery in 2017. Born and raised in Fairbanks, HooDoo owner Bobby Wilken, first had the idea to open a brewery while he was attending college in Montana. “That’s when I started drinking beer and brewing beer and visiting breweries, really developing a taste for it,” Wilken said. “I

always thought it would be so cool to have a brewery here.” After college, Wilken attended brewing school in Chicago and Munich, Germany. Wilken then spent five years working in Juneau at Alaskan Brewing Company to learn the trade before returning to Fairbanks to open his business. “When I moved back, I got on this mission to maybe do it some day,” Wilken said. “I thought it would be really good for Fairbanks. Fairbanks just really needed a great brewery so we ended up buying this building and turning it into a brewery.”

HOODOO Continued from 5 HooDoo Brewing Co. opened on Halloween of 2012. The brewery opens at 3 p.m. each week day, hosting throngs of eager beer drinkers every afternoon. For Wilken, this is half the fun. “It’s been great so far,” Wilken said. “It’s not easy to run a small brewery but it’s a lot of fun and we have a great cus-
tomer base. Hundreds of regulars that we love to see everyday and it’s just been awesome.” While HooDoo boasts several large brewing tanks, viewable from the tap room, Wilken still approaches each batch from a home brew point of view. “We really just brew for the tap room and a few places around town,” Wilken said. “We only distribute here in Fairbanks, and we’re really not trying to go any farther that. It’s really just for Fair-
banks.” While the beer will remain the same, reliably excellent, the brewery itself is undergoing some changes. A collection of solar panels was recently installed on the roof of the brewery, which will produce about 1/3 of the brewery’s power. The popular beer garden, a summer favorite, is currently under construction as well. “We’re building a nice patio, deck system out there with planters and great

places to sit,” Wilken said. “It’s going to be this beautiful beer garden. There will be a small covered space as well.” As a family run business, Wilken said there isn’t an interest in growing the brewery, just on improving it. “Fairbanks has just provided such a great base for us,” Wilken said. “Now we’re just trying continue to make the brewery better.” Contact staff writer Erin Granger at 459-7544. MCKINLEY Continued from 9 eight are doctors of veterinary medicine. The facility became accredited with the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) in 1976. “We are here seven days a week. We see scheduled appointments, we do emergency care, and we offer a wide variety of services,” Addington said. Mt. McKinley sees all your standard pets — cats, dogs, fish, bunnies, for example — as well as more exotic pets such as snakes and lizards, chinchillas, amphibians, birds, gerbils and hamsters, and other small pets. T he facility does not examine larger animals, like horses, livestock, llamas or alpacas. The most unusual pets Mt. McKinley staff have worked on include a taran-
tula and a centipede. “They can actually get mites,” Addington said. Addington also credits the rapport between staff and clients as helping facilitate the center’s positive reception with the public. “Every day is different, and we see a wide variety of clients,” she said. “We have some very longterm clients who have been coming here for years.” Those clients, the ones who have been coming since the hospital opened, have almost a family-like vibe as hospital staff has been working with them for so long. “We work on developing close relations with our clients,” Addington said. In the two years since Blue Door Antiques’ blue doors opened to customers, the business quickly took the top spot of Readers’ Choice for best antique shop. L ocated in the historic Mapleton-Sexton House at 315 Illinois St., Blue Door Antiques is the culmination of a lifelong antiquing passion for owner Drew Beguhl. The shop is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12-4 p.m. on Sundays. “Ever since I was 6-yearsold, I drug my mom to antique stores in California,” Beguhl said while wrapping $800 worth of tea cups for a customer’s wedding. But when all is said and done, Beguhl said an antique stores’ success relies on inventory — which Blue Door has covered. NO. 1 FAIRBANKS PRODUCTION
North Star Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” is a perennial community favorite that celebrated its 30th annual production in 2016. It’s no wonder, since the cast includes about 80 children and more than 100 volunteers, in addition to the adult roles in the production. Because of the large cast and large pool of volunteers, artist director Courtland Weaver said “The Nutcracker” touches a significant part of the local population. “What it does is it allows them to be part of a very professional production,” he said. “The stage is beautiful. The costumes are beautiful. Not a lot of kids get that opportunity. Any kid that wants to be in ‘The Nutcracker,’ we will find a place for them to be in it.” NEW-MINER FILE PHOTO
Continued from 15 very functional but also very beautiful,” Seeliger said, adding each owner brought their own flavor to the store. The primary key to success, according to Morse, is to treat customers as if they were guests in your home. “It’s really having a relationship and a conversation with people that’s meaningful to them. Visitors, I know, also really appreciate that.” Once a personal relationship is established with customers, bringing in specific items that might appeal to individuals becomes possible. Not to say you have to be an established customer to find something of interest at If Only, as the store strives to have products catering to any price range or gender. Perhaps the most familiar aspect of
If Only is Martha, the fanciful female caricature on the sidewalk outside the storefront, visible to passing motorists. Martha has been around as long as the shop, with her outfit and accessories occasionally changed to reflect seasons or store’s selections. For Seeliger, Martha is an example of how they treat their shop, “We work really hard on presentation, display is a really big thing to us.” And locating those displays in downtown Fairbanks was always the plan, “We wanted to be downtown, put energy into that space and add into the energy and vibrancy of Fairbanks,” Morse said. One walk by the storefront in summertime, with colorful flowers filling dozens of planters, is proof of the owners’ dedication to downtown Fairbanks and fine goods. Cold Spot Feeds is Fairbanks’ mushing superstore SFRIEDMAN@NEWSMINER.COM
This story originally appeared in March 2016. When judges pick the Small Business Person of the Year in each U.S. state and territory, they look for businesses that are profitable, expanding and community-oriented. In 2016, the U.S. Small Business Administration judges picked Connie Dubay as the statewide winner for Alaska. Her business Cold Spot Feeds has grown from a spare bedroom to a more than 22,000 square foot storefront that employs 28 people, a trajectory that’s followed the popularity of mushing in the Interior. It is also the top-ranked pet supply store in the 2017 Readers Choice
surveys. Dubay didn’t set out to start a mushing superstore when she and her then-husband, Stuart Morse, opened Cold Spot Feeds. The business started as a $10,000 investment in a truckload of prototype dog food from Wisconsin. It was 1986 and Dubay was pregnant with her fourth child. She wanted to start a business so she could work at home and be with her children. Musher Don Glassburn, a family friend, had good results feeding his Yukon Quest sled dogs with food made for mink and foxes. Dubay decided to approach the mink and fox company feed company about making food for canine athletes. The company, National Pet Foods, was willing to try to make a COLD SPOT » 23

READERS’ CHOICE Continued from 21 food with the right protein-fat mix for competitive mushing if the new Fairbanks business was willing to buy the first truckload. “That was a roll of the dice,” Dubay said. A trailer with 40,000 pounds of hand-packed dog food arrived in their
home driveway off Farmers Loop. The dog food sold. After a few years, the business expanded to harnesses and other sled dog equipment. “It was like the market was ready for a store that had everything. That’s how the path got chosen. It’s just what worked,” she said. “Within the first week, it was clear they were going to sell so we just started rolling with it, and well, you see
what it’s done. It’s pretty crazy how fast it grew. Probably the first five to eight years we would quadruple pretty much every year.” The business benefited from a series of new Interior mushing ventures that all happened at about the same time, including harness company Taiga Alaska and Mushing Magazine, she said. Cold Spot Feeds’ current storefront opened in 2010. The business has

Riverboat Discovery top attraction for visitors This story originally appeared in the 2017 Interior Alaska Visitors Guide. Staff Report
Passengers aboard the Riverboat Discovery watch as a float plane takes off during its afternoon tour of the Chena River in this News-Miner file photo. The riverboat was named the top destination for local residents to take visitors in the 2017 Readers’ Choice survey. ERIC ENGMAN/NEWS-MINER The trip begins at Steamboat Landing in west Fairbanks near Fairbanks International Airport. The landing is a replica gold rush-era river port with a dining hall where a hearty miner’s stew is served. The landing also includes a gift shop, museum and ice cream parlor. For those who want to experience a
taste of an Interior Alaska winter, you can participate in “Alaska at 40 Below,” a specially designed chamber that drops the mercury to the frigid depths of a mid-winter Fairbanks day. The tour costs $64.95 for adults, $39.95 for children age 3-12, and is free for those younger than age 3. Reservations are required and can be made by
calling 479-6673 or online at www.riverboatdiscovery.com. Tours run at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily from May 9 through Sept. 22. Lunch is an additional $11.95 for adults and $4.95 for children. The Alaska at 40 Below Experience is free, but you can have your picture taken for a $10 fee.

The Riverboat Discovery takes visitors on a trip to Alaska’s not-so-distant past when sternwheelers were a major part of Alaska’s transportation network. It is the most popular destination for Fairbanks residents to take visitors, according to the 2017 Readers’ Choice survey. The Binkley family has worked on Interior Alaska rivers for five generations, piloting ships for more than 100 years. Since the 1950s, various versions of the Riverboat Discovery have taken visitors for a uniquely Alaskan river ride. The tour meanders down the Chena River where passengers will watch a bush pilot take off and land in a small plane. The sternwheeler pauses at Trailbreaker Kennels, home of the family of late four-time Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race champion Susan Butcher, where visitors will learn about modern competitive mushing. Sled dogs were a vital form of winter transportation between villages, carrying people and freight in the days before snowmachines. Another stop is at a replica Interior Alaska Native village and fish camp. The Riverboat Discovery stops for an hour at the Native village, where passengers get a guided tour. Village hosts relate stories about their history, culture and subsistence lifestyle. Tour a fish camp, complete with a fishwheel, and learn techniques for catching, drying and storing salmon.
