The winners are ... Readers’ Choice brings out the best

W

hen it comes to the best of the best, News-Miner readers know what they like. From the best place to get a haircut to the best drinks in town or the best place to gorge on brunch, everyone has an opinion on where to go, what to visit and where to indulge. This Readers’ Choice has some new winners as well as recurring fan favorites. Making a “best of” list is no easy task. Readers sent stacks of ballots giving us their picks, and we tallied them up to give you a guide on where to go, what to see and what to do. It’s the best of the best Fairbanks has to offer — chosen by you. Thanks to all who took time to vote. From naming the area’s best restaurants, or dentists and doctors, none of it could have been done without you. If your favorite didn’t make the list, don’t worry — there is next year and plenty of time to debate who has the best breakfast or hair salon in Fairbanks. Meanwhile, get out and try something from the list.

Hot Licks tops list of local ice cream favorites Winning the News-Miner’s readers’ choice award for Best Ice Cream and Milkshakes isn’t anything new for Hot Licks. In fact, co-owner Geoff Wool doesn’t ever remember not winning it. Despite that, he said the annual announcement that his business has claimed the top spot is always greeted as good news. “I’m appreciative that we get recognized for something we work so hard to do,” Wool said. Coldstone Creamery and McDonald’s claimed the second- and thirdplace spots on the list, respectively. Wool, who runs Hot Licks with his wife, Dorothee, attributes its ongoing popularity to a focus on quality ingredients and a willingness to try new flavors. He said tried-and-true ingredients make the product what it is — milk, cream, egg yolks, and a policy to avoid artificial colors or flavors. When

someone orders a pistachio or mint chocolate chip cone, they don’t arrive with a typical bright-green hue, just a focus on delivering the best flavor possible, Wool said. The vivid colors in the Hot Licks products come from natural ingredients, like cranberries, coffee or blueberries. Hot Licks ice cream is produced at its Van Horn Road factory, and is distributed to restaurants, businesses and the company’s signature stores around Fairbanks. Hot Licks’ busiest summer spot is a popular neighborhood ice cream hut along College Road, along with stores along Chena Pump Plaza and the Old Steese Highway. Its products also are offered at a variety of restaurants and stores in Fairbanks and Anchorage. The company is in its 26th year of operation, growing from a part-time hobby to a regional mainstay. “We just did this on a lark, really,” Wool said. “We had fun with it and it just kind of got out of hand.”

Eric Engman/ News-Miner

Hot Licks Homemade Ice Cream was voted Best Ice Cream for the 2012 Readers’ Choice Awards.

Through the years, Wool has kept the business interesting by constantly developing new flavors alongside traditional favorites like chocolate and vanilla. This season’s offerings

include ginger sesame almond, malted grapenut and flavors made with Silver Gulch beer. Please see HOT LICKS, Page 12

Fireweed Consignment shops top women’s clothing picks By DOROTHY CHOMICZ dchomicz@newsminer.com

hadn’t yet been made public, however, both she and Case had to keep the news secret. “We haven’t told anyone. Well I told my husband, but he’s not going to tell anybody,” Macomber said, laughing. Between the two stores there are 3,500 consignors who bring in their gently used or never worn women’s clothing for resale. Macomber and

Case go through each item and carefully select what will be sold in the store. “It just has to be in really, really good shape. Put it this way — we probably only take 20 percent to 25 percent total of what comes in. We turn away so much clothing,” Macomber said. Please see FIREWEED, Page 7

Case said she and her mother tend to avoid taking items from Old Navy and brands sold at Kmart and Walmart. “The two of us have really good brand intuition. We tend to take, not higher end labels, but we take a lot of labels that you generally can’t find in Fairbanks. A lot of women go out of state and shop or they order online, and we get a lot of that in,” Case said. “We like known brands — anything from Patagonia and Mountain Hardware to Ann Taylor and Banana Republic. Fairbanks doesn’t really see a whole lot of couture.” Clothing is consigned for 60 days, and consign-

ors wishing to take cash for their items receive 40 percent of the selling price. Those who elect to take payment in store credit get 50 percent, Case said. The inventory is checked every Monday and anything that’s hit its 60-day mark is either returned to the owner or donated if the owner doesn’t want it back. “The women’s shelter has actually thanked us a few times because we’ve already curated the clothes. They know they’re getting women’s clothing, that it’s clean and folded and in bags. We present it to them in a nice way, so they’re pretty happy,” Macomber said. Risse Greenhouse named best garden center By MATT BUXTON mbuxton@newsminer.com From its hundreds of varieties of flowers to its annuals, vegetables, herbs, perennials, trees, shrubs, berries and even its own mixes of soil, Risse Greenhouse has just about everything an aspiring gardener to greenest of green thumbs would need for a garden to flourish in the Interior. Located at 6.4 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road, Risse Greenhouse has been planting and growing for nearly 60 years, building a foundation of know-how and selection that made the business this year’s top pick for readers. Risse Greenhouse got its start in the 1950s at the homestead of Lee and Greta Risse. Lee, unhappy with the quality of local produce, built his first greenhouse with extra capacity to sell produce locally and business took off from there. For much of its operation, Risse Greenhouse supplied flowers and soil to grocery stores, big boxes and other green houses but started to

Today, Risse Greenhouse has grown to 18 commercial-grade greenhouses with more than 40,000 square feet of indoor growing space. Helen McLean, the production manager who oversees much of the day-to-day operations, says the Risse legacy has driven the business to focus

on service based on decades of knowledge. Employees at Risse Greenhouse are all ardent gardeners at heart, McLean said, and even though they spend most of the work day potting plants, it never gets old. “We take a lot of care to grow our plants to be the best they can,” she said. “I like to see things grow — we all love to. At the end of the day we go

She said they look for plants that are well-suited for the short growing season and near-constant sunlight. In recent years Risse has also added a number of classes such as growing and using herbs and kid-centric basic gardening classes. It also has begun holding popular First Friday events. It’s all looking for ways to make Risse Greenhouse, which is a drive from the city, a destination worth visiting. “I want to make it worth the drive out here,” McLean said. Its dominant ingredient is, indeed, smoked pink salmon. Wool said his favorite recipe for the ice cream is pretty tasty, with flavors of cranberry and six pounds of salmon per batch. He’s a little worried the public might not be as excited about the idea, but said he’s tempted to give it a shot just to see the reaction. “I don’t know if it would be a hit,” he admits. “But I’m kind of curious to see how it would go.” Contact staff writer Jeff Richardson at 459-7518.

Readers choose Governor’s Cup as best local sport event Fairbanks touts itself as a “hockey town,” so it comes as no surprise Fairbanksans two favorite teams and favorite event are related to the sport. According to News-Miner readers, the Alaska Nanooks of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association are the favorite team for the Golden Heart City and the Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup between the Nanooks and the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves is the town’s favorite event. The battle for the Governor’s Cup has become one of the most heated rivalries in all of college hockey as the winner earns bragging rights as the state’s top collegiate hockey team. It has been important for the past 19 years because the Nanooks and Seawolves play in different conferences. UAA plays in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while the Nanooks play in the CCHA, so confer-

In February, the Nanooks captured the Governor’s Cup for the 11th time

in the 19-year history of the event, beating the Seawolves 3-1 at the Carlson Center to even the two-game series at one apiece, then winning the ensuing shootout 3-2. It was the Nanooks third straight win in the series. “It’s unbelievable. This cup is the biggest cup of this community and it feels unbelievable to win it again,” junior left wing Nik Yaremchuk, who scored the winning shootout conversion, said on the arena’s Olympic-size ice during the postgame celebration at the Carlson Center. No matter how the two teams fare during the regular season, when it’s time for the Governor’s Cup you can bet there will be a sellout crowd at the Carlson Center. This year a standing room only crowd of 4,595 watched the Nanooks take down the Seawolves. Next year’s Governor’s Cup marks the final time the two schools will play each as members of different leagues.

The Nanooks will join the Seawolves in the WCHA in the 2013-14 season. The Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the Junior A North American Hockey League are Fairbanks’ second-favorite team, making hockey a big hit during the long winter months. The Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks, an Alaska Baseball League team comprised of college stars from throughout the country were third in the team balloting. Finishing second behind the Governor’s Cup in the events category, is the International Bonspiel, the final event of the curling season at the Fairbanks Curling Club. Third place in the event category went to the Fairbanks Rollergirls roller derby team. The Rollergirls have several bouts each season, raising money for a different charity at each event. North Star Ballet’s ‘The Nutcracker’ voted best production Eric Engman/News-Miner

By SUZANNA CALDWELL scaldwell@newsminer.com In a lot of ways, the North Star Ballet would not be what it is today with “The Nutcracker.” In was more than two decades ago when artistic director Norman Shelburne came to Fairbanks to stage the holiday classic. He only had a few months to prepare for his first direction of “The Nutcracker” in 1986, but he pulled it off. Since then, the tradition has only grown, each year building on bits from the past to make the next performance more stunning. “The Nutcracker” was voted best performance of 2012 by Fairbanks Daily NewsMiner readers, beating out

The children aging and changing make for a unique experience every year, something Shelburne thinks brings people back again and again. “It’s different every year because the cast is different,” Shelburne said. Shelburne said after 25 years, there’s no plans to change the production in any major way. With the community so involved there is a strong sense of ownership. “People grow accustomed to it and they go outside and see a ‘Nutcracker’ and come back and say ‘I like ours better,’” he said. “This is our ‘Nutcracker’ and we own it. To change it dramatically would be a mistake.”

1988. Shelburne said Turner could see there was a need for a dance educator in Fairbanks. “In a small community like this, that was a real boon,” Shelburne said. “That set the tone, which I have enjoyed ever since.” With Turner and Shelburne advocating for a program that would help prepare dancers for “The Nutcracker,” the North Star Ballet was born. Since then, every year they have performed “The Nutcracker” using a cast of almost all local dancers. As the production has grown, so have the children involved. Children usually start as cherubs at age 8 but later grow into elves, little mice, party children or wooden soldiers.
