“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? […] Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. […] It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Marianne Williamson

Shirley Franklin Owner Chatanika Lodge
For three decades, Shirley Franklin has partnered with her husband Ron, running the Chatanika Lodge at Mile 28.5 on the Steese Highway, an area steeped in gold-mining history. And like those days of yore, the roadhouse epitomizes the friendliness and hospitality of early day Alaska with Shirley greeting all who happen by in addition to cooking, waitressing, bartending, and doing the bookkeeping. Whether it’s a busload or two of Japanese tourists set on viewing the aurora for a few hours in the winter, independent RVers, campers, the occasional celebrity, or locals from the Chatanika community, Shirley is there with a ready smile, prepared to answer questions, feed them, put them up for the night in one of the lodge’s 10 rooms, or simply visit over a cup of coffee — if she can spare the time. “I enjoy the customers very much,” she said. “We have lots of interesting conversations, and I meet people from all walks of life.” Like many before her, Shirley traveled north in the late 1970s to visit a relative, in this case her sister, and met Ron, who was rebuilding the Chatanika Lodge after a devastating 1975 fire. The differences between Alaska lifestyles and Shirley’s home in Southern California were great, but Shirley’s adventurous spirit overcame any doubts to move north, and in 1980, she made the 49th state home. She and Ron married in 1982. Shirley worked several different jobs in Fairbanks before taking on lodge duties full-time, and she’s never looked back. Driving out the Steese Highway, one can’t miss the welcoming cedar lodge set aglow with approximately 20,000 twinkling Christmas lights both indoors and out. The lodge’s interior, filled with Alaskana — mining artifacts, hunting trophies and tanned hides (wolf, beaver and fox) for sale, speaks of another time, and its charm keeps people coming back. “My husband and I like a homey atmosphere,” said Shirley, who has enlarged upon that comfortable ambiance throughout the lodge by including red oilcloth table coverings. “But the most important things,” Shirley emphasizes, “are customer service, a clean establishment and food consistency.” And the lodge’s food is well regarded, drawing people regularly for the weekend specials. Friday and Saturday night specials are deep-fried cod or catfish with coleslaw and corn fritters. On Sundays it’s deep-fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, and corn fritters. A typical day for Shirley begins with helping in the preparation of breakfast, which is served from the time the lodge opens at 10 a.m. Lunch begins at noon and dinner service starts at 5 p.m. Shirley has help to keep the lodge running smoothly day by day, including a full-time cook, but desserts are her specialty. “I like to bake,” she said. “I make many different kinds of cakes and my own pies, fruit pies, apple, blueberry, and in the summer rhubarb/strawberry pies.” Her dedication to seeing to customers’ comfort and welfare extends into the community as well. The lodge is a social center not only for summer tourists and campers but also for the year-round residents who live in the area as well. During the winter, business slows down, but not Shirley. Just as in the summer, she is on hand overseeing the lodge but also planning the parties, events, and community service occasions. The Franklins are noted for their generous community service. “We have a lot of functions out here,” Shirley said, mentioning dart tournaments, antique car shows, motorcycle runs, and children’s parties — a Christmas party and Easter egg hunt in the spring — interspersed with wedding receptions, birthday parties and memorial services from time to time. “Up until this year we had elections here, too,” she said. Most every Sunday, 5-9 p.m., (call beforehand) there is entertainment and dancing — provided by professional musicians on the lodge’s small elevated stage. Before retelling a favorite lodge story, Shirley explained, “We have (padded) covered tree stumps for barstools.” “I was bartending one night and everybody sitting at the bar was singing and swinging from side to side, and then it happened; it was like a domino effect and all of my customers were on the floor.” The Franklins could write a book of entertaining lodge stories. And, who knows, they might if a young couple interested in carrying on the roadhouse tradition turns up. “We enjoy our customers, but we’re ready to retire now,” Shirley said. McKinley Bank, and she has never left the bank’s employ. “It will be 37 years in January,” Patty said, quickly calculating the numbers in her head. Patty had an “in” to be hired so young: Her two older sisters were already working at the bank and recommended her. Over time, her sisters left, but Patty stayed on, learning the banking business from the ground up. “I’ve never felt the need to leave,” she said. “There have always been lots of opportunities. You just have to work hard, and that’s OK. I work with a lot of dedicated people.” “I have had three terrific bosses at the bank — Ken Thompson, Bill Simon and my current boss, Craig Ingham. They have all given me many, many opportunities. In addition, our board has been incredibly supportive of me. Today, as executive vice president and chief operations officer, Patty oversees the non-lending activities of Mt. McKinley Bank — the bank’s five branches, its tellers and accounts. She also manages the information systems department, the accounting department and human resources department, for a total of approximately 60 people. “Mt. McKinley, it can get into your blood,” Patty said. “It’s a great bank, a great employer, and has the best customer service at a reasonable cost. “That really appeals to me, as well as being a community partner. We give a lot of money away and really support the community.” “We give generously to United Way of the Tanana Valley, sponsor the art for HIPOW, the North Pole Championship Dog Sled Race, University of Alaska Fairbanks Women’s Basketball tournament, and over the years have given to hundreds if not thousands of non-profits and participate in community events that are open to everyone.” Fairbanks born and raised, Patty is married to David Mongold, an Allstate Insurance agent. They have two adult daughters, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild, who all live in Fairbanks, as well as Patty’s mother and two of her three sisters. So its no surprise that family activities and events are at the top of Patty’s list. “We spend a lot of time with our family and especially enjoy the grandchildren, and some great friends,” Patty said. A strong work ethic was deeply ingrained in Patty at a young age, and it continues down the family line. “My mother single-handedly raised six kids,” she said. “I watched her work very hard for her family and it made a lasting impression. My husband and I have worked hard to provide for our family, and now I am very proud to say that my daughters and my son-in-law are following us, working hard to provide for their families, and all are involved in the community as volunteers. Patty attended Lathrop High School and graduated from the Career Education Center. She also attended UAF. “When I was in high school I had many dedicated teachers who mentored me,” she said. “One of them continues as a mentor to this day, Wendell Shiffler. He and his wife Judy (both retired teachers) are great role models for me and my husband.” Patty and David love to travel, and they get away whenever possible if work isn’t too pressing. To relax, Patty said, “I love to read and David and I enjoy trying new wines.” “My friends think I know a lot about wine,” she laughs. “I don’t really. I just know about the ones I like.” Patty has been involved in a variety of community service organizations over the years. Currently she is treasurer of the Sunrisers Rotary club and sits on the boards of the Brice Family Center Foundation and the Pioneers Home Foundation, which she has served since its inception in the 1990s. She is also co-chair of the Prospectors Club for the 2012 United Way Campaign, a campaign that she and Dave headed up the campaign in 2000, Workdays find Patty at her desk no later than 7:30 a.m. and none are typical. Patty’s daily activities may range from conducting hiring interviews, responding to audits and requests for proposals for banking services, keeping up with all the banking regulatory changes, dealing with fraudulent checks and identity checks, answering questions about the bank’s art collection, and a variety of special banking and building projects — and of course customer service.
