You will discover the unique ways in which indigo dye builds colour onto cloth before exploring ways of patterning using resists. From folding, clamping and tying to the application of pastes made from mud or starch, this day session will act as a taster introduction to just some of the many practical ideas with which to experiment.
By the end of the session you will have learnt how to cut and layer glass, manipulate wire and construct a number of creations into the kiln.

Restored and Remixed 2012 by Michael Brennand-Wood. Photo by Philip Sayer.
Michael Brennand-Wood is internationally regarded as one of the most innovative and inspiring artists working in mixedmedia textiles today. This is a unique opportunity to work alongside Michael, sharing and investigating his thought processes and techniques surrounding both physical and conceptual deconstruction. What happens if making actually becomes a process of taking away? Over the two days you will explore these ideas of deconstruction with emphasis being placed on the investigation and documentary processes of personal imagery through the development of technical skills and ideas. Please bring any object, image, idea or theme that you wish to subject to a process of deconstruction and interpretation. Imagery might be obscured, erased, overlaid, cut, veiled or removed in a variety of physical forms, utilising techniques such as cut work, appliqué, shadow quilting, darning, mending, wax resist or pieced work. Some materials will be available but you are also asked to bring materials that are relevant to your investigations (wires, threads, string, fabrics, drawings etc) as well as an apron, a camera and a sketchbook that explains something about your own practice. See Michael’s work in our Main Gallery exhibition Beauty is The First Test between 27 Apr — 30 Jun 2013. This workshop is aimed at those working at an intermediate to advanced level. £125 per person / £110 concession Book your place by ringing: 01529 308710 www.nationalcraftanddesign.org.uk
