By Phyllis Hodges For a fun Fourth of July, plan to start the day with your friends at Community Hall on the SCC South Campus. Breakfast Committee Chairs Sam and Joanne Sudman have marshaled over 100 volunteers to serve the $5 “red, white & blue” pancakes, sausage, eggs, toast, coffee and juice from 7 a.m. to noon. It is not an all-you-can-eat buffet, but servings are ample, they say. The new location provides space to add a third food line which will streamline service. Over 1,000 people came last year, so they are preparing for more than that this year. They could use 10 more volunteers on the 6-9 shift and then a few to “pack up” at 11:30. If you can help, call 633-3106. Later in the day—after 4:30 p.m.—make your way to ClubLink’s former golf course property on N. Pebble Beach Boulevard. Sandpiper Grill (Nick Egarhos, owner) will be in the area outside the clubhouse serving barbeque fare. Dinners that include a hot dog or brat

with coleslaw, baked beans and potato chips will be $5. A two-piece chicken dinner with the same sides will be $7. Hot dogs and brats without sides will be $3. Water and soft drinks will be available for $1. An ice cream truck will also be on the property this year. Egarhos is also arranging live and taped music by a dynamic duo—Tito and Debi, that the crowd so enjoyed last year. Fireworks Chair Al Alderman said that Minto Communities and Brandon Honda are again funding the fireworks display, and that this year will even bigger than last year. This is Sun City Center’s third fireworks display. It began as part of our 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2011 and was such a hit that community leaders have made the effort to continue it. Reminders: Don’t drive your golf cart! It will be dark after the fireworks. Stay within the designated viewing areas. Violations could cause Continued on Page 5

With Deputy Jason Castillo Be civil in dealing with civil disputes Recently, two men on bicycles were confronted by a man in an SUV. According to the man in the SUV, the men on the bikes had violated right of way coming out of the Atrium parking lot, causing him to be frustrated. Instead of just letting the mistake go, the man in the SUV chose to follow the men on bicycles, shouting at them. At the next intersection one of the men on

the bikes approached the SUV. The argument escalated into a physical confrontation. At one point the cyclist brandished a gun, leading to a fight for the firearm. enforcement arrived at the scene and, fortunately, broke up the fight before shots were fired. The man on the bicycle was transported to the hospital for observation. This incident happened right in the heart of Sun City Center, and it serves as a reminder of how quickly situations can escalate. No matter how frustrated you are with another person’s behavior in traffic, just let it go. Is your frustration worth taking a bullet? Is it worth endangering innocent bystanders. Of course not. But it can be tough to know when a heated conversation will turn violent. The best policy is to be as civil and understanding as

Buy & Sell with Kings Point Classifieds

By E. Adam Porter, Editor Our new online Classifieds section is up and live online at Classifieds.NewsOfKingsPoint. com. So, if you are looking for something to buy or you have something to sell, CHECK IT OUT!!! You can sell your stuff, list an ad or advertise your garage sale in 6 quick and easy steps. These steps are listed for you online at www. newsofkingspoint.com/ classifieds/ HELP If you have questions or you are having trouble posting a classified ad, there is also a form you can fill out on that Internet page. IMPORTANT There are 3 types of classified ads available with this service. You may choose a one-time posting for a single month, a recurring posting that continues for six months, and those seeking products or services may post free ads that will last two months. Here’s more on those ad categories. Free Ads If you are looking for something particular or you are a nonprofit promoting an event for which you will not receive compensation, you may post a free ad. Also, if you have found a lost item and wish to use the site to help locate the owner, you may place a free ad. One Time Ads One time ads are exactly that. They stay up for one month starting the day you post them. There is a small, reasonable cost to cover our expenses. Recurring Ads If you wish your ad to continue for up to six months, you can

select a recurring ad. Your ad price will be locked in for up to six months. Premium Ads Both paid ads allow for “Premium” posting on the home page and category page of the Classifieds site. This means these ads will be among the first any visitors see when searching. There is a slight additional cost for this service, but it gives you a distinct advantage. FAQs Why do I have to register my name and email to list an ad? The site is set up to add an extra layer of protection for both our buyers and sellers. While we make no guarantees, it is much better to have a name and email associated with an account than to have to deal with an anonymous person. How many ads can I place each month? As many as you want. There is no limit. Can I cancel? If you select a recurring ad you may cancel that ad by logging in and deleting that ad post. That’s another great reason to register. How do I place an ad? Go to www.newsofkingspoint.com/ classifieds and follow the easy, step-by-step instructions (with pictures) you will find there. Our goal for this classified service is to offer Sun City Center and SouthShore residents an opportunity to buy and sell close to home. Please look at that instruction page and list your FOR SALE items ASAP. We look forward to hearing about your sales success stories. Check out the SCC & SouthShore Classifieds at www. NewsOfKingsPoint.com today.

possible. And to avoid exchanges such as these whenever possible. In these situations, try to keep your mind open and your mouth closed. You may have to bite down on some anger, but that is better than taking a ride in the back of a squad car, ambulance or hearse. Here’s another scenario… You happen to be in a hurry, on the way to someplace that won’t wait. The person in front of you is clearly not. They wait too long at traffic lights, drive slowly and generally just get you all aggravated. Hey, we’ve all been there. It’s understandable. If you are behind someone at a traffic light and they are a little slow coming off the line, do not honk your horn. All too often in these cases the person is startled and will accidentally dart out into traffic without looking first. This causes many accidents. Yes, you

have someplace to be, and, yes, you have the right to get there on time. But not at the expense of someone else’s safety. CRIME AWARENESS MEETINGS NOTE: Change in location for the SCC meeting Do not miss the community Crime Awareness meetings coming up in July. I will be at the Kings Point Fiber Arts room at 1900 Clubhouse Drive on July 9th at 1 PM. I will be at the American Momentum Bank at 131 S. Pebble Beach Blvd. in SCC on July 17th at 2 PM. Hope to see you there. We will be discussing Level 1 crime in the area and answering resident questions and concerns. In subsequent months these meetings will continue to be held in Kings Point on the second Tuesday of the month and in SCC on the third Wednesday. Be safe out there!

President Ed Barnes said that profits from the July 4 breakfast go to the Fireworks Fund. Donations are also welcome since there are expenses for permits, security, etc. not covered by the Minto and Brandon Honda contributions. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to the SCC CA office. Della and Nuri Georges joined Joe and Connie Anderson on the Coral Princess for a two-week Alaskan cruise including one week of land tours. The two couples loved the “amazing” trip. They booked through the sponsor of our Where in the World contest, Legendary Journeys.

Fred & Debbie Shorb took a transatlantic cruise in October, 2013, on Holland America’s MS Noordam. The highlight of our trip was spending a couple of nights in Rome before beginning our cruise to Fort Lauderdale. We enjoyed seeing the sights Rome had to offer, including The Vatican, Roman Forum and the Coliseum. One of our favorite moments was dining outdoors at a restaurant in Rome.

OOPS! Last month in NOKP we incorrectly identified one of the WITW pictures. It was Bev Carnes, not Judy Lahon, hanging out with this koala. Mia culpa, ladies. Sincerely, Eddie D. June Hendley traveled to England to friends and family. Here she is in front of Blackpool Tower, a seaside resort in northwest England.

Al & Pat enjoying Sangria in a Barcelona restaurant.

Al & Pat Hurlbrink of Kings Point, recently returned from a 15-day cruise aboard Holland American Lines Nieuw Amsterdam. The ship repositioned from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Barcelona, Spain. The successful crossing placed the Nieuw Amsterdam into the European/Mediterranean market for the 2013 summer season. But not without a large and unexpected serving of high seas adventure along with dinner one evening – a rescue at sea! The ship’s captain announced we were diverting our course to respond to an S.O.S from a 43-foot sailing yacht out of St. Maarten, bound for Southampton, England, with a crew of 3 that had lost its steering capability, and, after 4 days of unsuccessful repair attempts declared an emergency. Being the nearest ship in the area (approximately 2 hours sailing time away, and still the closest!) our Captain agreed to attempt the rescue. It was an exciting 3 hours as we raced on a new course toward the 43-foot boat and observed the rescue. Al and Pat Hurlbrink are longtime cruisers, but this was their first participation in rescue-at-sea! The remainder of the cruise seemed anticlimactic. Ports of call included Ponte Delgada, Portugal; Cadiz, Malaga, Cartagena, and Barcelona, Spain.

SCC Emergency Squad Gets 5 New Responders Five students recently completed the intense 52hour “Emergency Medical Responder” course given at the Sun City Center Emergency Squad Training Center. Students were first trained and certified in CPR. Following this they studied medical and environmental emergencies, airway management, the human body, bleeding control, shock, and poisoning. Students also learned the proper technique for splinting, bandaging, backboarding and scooping a patient. Each student has now been assigned to one of eight teams and will begin a period of

mentoring with an experienced ambulance crew. The SCC Emergency Squad has 440 members and is growing .

Support personnel from the Emergency Squad held a delightful dinner gathering at Cypress Creek on June 5. Front office workers, blood pressure techs., dispatchers, cooks and coordinators met for a great evening out and to enjoy the fellowship and camaraderie of their fellow volunteers. Sally Heffernan, a front office blood pressure tech, is the organizer of this outing. It provides a great opportunity for support volunteers from all 8 teams to get together to share experiences. 220 people on the Squad are in support positions. No experience is needed and if you think you might like to find out more about our Squad family, please call 813-633-1411 or visit our web site at www.scc-ems.us

Emergency Squad Selected As Tops In State The Sun City Center Emergency Squad has just been notified that they have been selected to receive the prestigious “Quality Senior Living Award” (QSLA) for being the best EMS organization in the state of Florida for their Service to Seniors. Thirty organizations were entered and “The Squad” came out on top. One of the key parameters for selection was the positive impact that

the “Squad “ has on the quality of living of our Florida seniors. The Florida Department of Aging will present this award at their annual conference to be held on August 13 in Orlando, Florida. The “Squad” is a unique and energetic organization comprised of 440 volunteers. No one is paid and the Squad receives no federal or state funding. The “Squad”

responded to 6800 emergency calls last year in the greater Sun City Center area. It is estimated that the services of “The Squad” saves the Hillsborough County tax payers approximately 5 million dollars a year. Anyone interested in joining this prestigious all volunteer organization, please stop by for an application or visit our web site at www.scc-ems.us.

Freedom Plaza Update Submitted by MJ Rice Freedom Plaza welcomes our new Executive Director, Kevin Knopf. Mary Mackey, a Director with Brookdale Senior Living served as Interim Director. Alter a long and extensive search Mary introduced the new Director to the residents at a Town Hall meeting at the end of May. Following his introduction Kevin promised that he would be meeting with residents and associates alike, floor-byfloor and building-by-building. Demonstrating he is a man of action, he quickly tackled this daunting task and is rapidly fulfilling that promise. With his mother a nurse and his father an Air Force doctor, it is not surprising that Kevin, a self confessed Air Force brat, followed in their footsteps as he opted to pursue the Health Care profession. His success in the field is obvious, as he has dedicated his life to caring for the sick and the elderly making him a perfect fit for the Freedom Plaza community. Kevin begin his career at the bottom, starting as a dishwasher at a skilled nursing facility and rising steadily to the position of Executive Director at a life care community in Texas and most recently at The Fountains at Lake Point in Sarasota. Mr. Knopf has quickly won the approval of residents and associates as he dived into meetings with pen in hand and listened closely to their concerns. We all wish him much success in his new position. Scholarship Program The successful Scholarship program at Freedom Plaza once again awarded 26 scholarships to deserving associates intent on furthering their education. The fund is mainly funded by a cruise and the “The Freedom Frolics” both of which are popular events for the residents. The production of “Freedom Frolics” is written, produced and directed by the talented Peggy Burgess, Resident Programs

Assistant. This theatrical event is a huge favorite of the residents and is a leader in raising funds for the Scholarship program. Individual residents and ROC (Retired Officers Corporation) also makes contributions to the fund. Congratulations to all the recipients. Due to the new association between Freedom Plaza and the Sun City Center Community Association many residents of the Plaza and Golf View Terrace took advantage of the recent golf cart Registration/Safety check sponsored by SCCCA. We are already seeing an advantage to the new relationship and many Freedom Plaza residents, especially those who moved from SCC, are celebrating the opportunity to maintain ties to the activities and clubs they once enjoyed. Freedom Fairways Golf Tournament With the recent success of the “Margarita Monday” golf tournament, Frank Hinson, Director of golf and tennis at Freedom Plaza has announced another “cocktail: tournament at Freedom Fairways. “Mimosa Monday” is scheduled for Monday, July 8, 2013. The beat the heat, morning shotgun start at 8:00 AM. Register in the Pro Shop at 7:30 AM and enjoy scones and a mimosa prior to teeing. Following play enjoy a light lunch and a mimosa. There will be a cash only drink cart on the course to help you keep cool. The tournament fee is $15.00. If you have your own cart the fee is just $10.00. Format will be a two-person scramble. Prizes will be awarded to male, female and mixed teams. Find a partner and sign up for another great day at Freedom Fairways. Call the Pro Shop (813) 633-4653 to make your reservations. Due to the popularity of the first “cocktail” tournament, make your reservations early, as the field will no doubt fill up quickly.

Submitted by John Bowker The Hillsborough County Public Utilities Department will be extending its 30-inch sewage pipeline system shortly to accommodate growth in the south county area and to increase overall wastewater system reliability. The $8 million project will involve installation of 11,000 feet of the PVC pipe under State Road 674 from the Cortaro Drive intersection, up Cortaro to Upper Creek Drive, west to Cypress Creek Boulevard and then north to a point opposite the South County Wastewater Treatment Plant now under construction on the west side of I-75. The pipe will then be tunneled under I-75 to the new plant. All construction will involve cutting into the pavement of those streets, but no street or intersection will be closed during this project. All underground utilities will be kept operational according to the project supervisor. This is Phase II of the program that will ultimately provide wastewater piping from as far north as Valrico. About a year ago, Phase I brought 30-inch pipe from US-301 along the south side of 674 and was completed. Construction of Phase II may start as early as August this year; the contract calls for completion in 9 months.

prostate cancer I think my father had prostate cancer, but I’m not sure. If he did, am I at higher risk? A— Any man who has a prostate

is at risk, unfortunately. We do know that if a first degree relative (father or brother) had prostate cancer, then you are at increased risk of developing it yourself. However, many men who have no family history at all also develop the disease. This is just one of the frustrations associated with prostate cancer. The best advice is to remain vigilant in having annual PSA tests and the digital exams. Even though our government panels say the test is not needed, it is better to know—and to know early—than to find out late in the game that you have advanced prostate cancer.

Rube’s First Hole-In-One - A big Congratulations!

On Monday, June 10th, four Hogans made an outing to Northdale Golf Course in North Tampa, namely Rich Lucidi, Bob Jacobs, Joe DeFelice, and Rube Jones to take advantage of a special deal that Bob had discovered. On Hole #5, 124 yard par 3, Rich took his shot and landed about 4 feet from the flag. Bob turned to Rube, next on the tee, with an 8-iron in hand, and said, Rube, can you get inside of that? And he did. The other players plus three groundskeepers working near the green saw it go in the hole and it made their day. And Rube bought the beer afterwards. After 35 years of golf, this was Rube's first hole-in-one. A big CONGRATULATIONS from all of us. This was the second hole-in-one by a Hogan this year, as far as we know. Jay Sparkman got one earlier while playing with some friends at Apollo Beach. A belated official congratulations to Jay as well. Rex PS: There is still hope for the rest of us, and some may have already done so in the past. Bill Cundy has already had about a half dozen elsewhere.

Kings Point has a new golf cart gate

The new golf cart gate with electronic access control went into effect June 3rd. It requires a swipe of your new Kings Point ID badge that was issued to you over the last few months. To activate the magnetic strip on the back of your card, you will need to stop by the box office in the North Clubhouse to have it activated during regular business hours; M-F 8:30 am-4 pm. You will need a properly activated ID card in order to enter Kings Point on the golf cart path, however, a card is not needed to exit Kings Point; the gate will open automatically as you approach to exit. If there is a problem with your card, and the gate will not open, there is an intercom button on the access control panel you can push to talk with an officer. Non-residents who have a tee time for a golf course located in Kings Point need to use the intercom button to tell the officer their name, which course they are playing on and their assigned tee time. Anyone on a golf cart who does not have an activated ID card or valid tee time on a Kings Point golf course will have to enter the community through the main gates on Kings Boulevard. Tune into channel 733 (formerly channel 96) on the hour, every hour for an informational video. You can also access the video from your computer. Remember, the golf cart path is closed from dusk until dawn. We thank you for your cooperation and patience as we all adjust to this new security feature. Drive Safe!

Assassination of President Lincoln

The assassination of Lincoln and the various conspiracies surrounding his death was the subject of a presentation made to the SCC Men’s Club by Dr. Michael Deeb at a recent luncheon meeting. Dr. Deeb went from a career in education and later a career in the business world on to retirement as a novelist writing historical novels about his first passion U.S. History. He captivated his audience with details of the various conspiracies that were circulated at the time and years later. Dr. Deeb is a lecturer aboard the paddlewheel boats on the Mississippi River and happens to be a member of the SCC Men’s Club. For more information on the Men’s Club contact John Armstrong, VP Membership at (813) 634-6434.

SCC Duplicate Bridge News

Kathleen Smith, a member of the Sun City Center Duplicate Bridge Club, became a bridge life master in April 2013. She earned this honor at the Fort Lauderdale Regional Bridge Tournament. The SCC Duplicate Bridge Club & the King’s Point Duplicate Bridge Club celebrated her achievement. In other news… The Sun City Center Duplicate Bridge Association celebrated its 50th anniversary with a catered dinner and entertainment at the Community Hall on April 28th. One hundred seventy-eight members and guests began the festivities with a champagne toast given by Club Manager Ron Golik. Appetizers and a delicious meal were provided by Banquet Masters Catering while Barb Carlini of the SCC Organ and Keyboard Club offered organ music throughout the cocktail and dinner hours. Appropriate to the occasion were interesting bits of club history presented throughout the hour by President Jerry Harter. A table displaying historical items was made

available for all to visit. The following honored guests were introduced by Mary Rutledge, former Manager of the SCCDBA: Mr. and Mrs. Ed Barnes and Mr. and Mrs. David Floyd of the C A Association; Dean Abercrombie and Don Berens, past presidents; Lillian McCollough, Annabell Schutte, Jean Sadler, and Margaret Weir, longtime members. One of the highlights of the evening was the entertainment, organized by club member John Foster, in the form of a musical revue. The show, directed by Brenda Coman, was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Featured in the cast were emcee Bill Barker, Vince Robbio, Charles Wirick, John Cortese, Joanne Podgurski, Troy “Allen” Coman and The Sunsations, a local dance group. The festivities concluded with the ensemble singing “God Bless The USA.” The above performers volunteered their talents so that a donation made by the SCCDBA might benefit the Music Department of Lennard High School.

Local Swimmers Travel

SCC Swim Dancers, a local senior swim team using synchronized swim skills, travelled to Sarasota to observe the 2013 Pan-American Masters Swim Championship. Some of the local team members drove there for the final three days of these games to watch as teams from as far as Colorado, New York City and Venezuela competed in this meet held at the Selby Aquatic Center. Our local swimmers travelled to observe and learn, especially “synchro” skills, from the teams of women ages from 20 to 81!! Some of these observed techniques will be further honed here at the regular practice schedules at the SCC lap pool. Any ladies interested in more information on the Sun City Center team are encouraged to phone either Sue Muise at 633-2479 or Judy Quitsch at 6420157. Summer swim practices are Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9 pm and Friday mornings from 7:30 to 9 am.

Patriots Club “Keeps Them Flying”

The Patriots Club of Sun City Center is again flying the U.S. Flags along S.R. 674. They were installed for Memorial Day and will continue to be flown through July 4th. It is a beautiful sight when driving along S.R. 674. To aid in retrieving flags which have come down, special tags were attached to the poles which read “if found, please call 642-2020”. The club’s officers hope this will help lessen the loss of flags that blow down during storms. If you happen to find a flag that has blown down, please pick it up and call the number listed on the tag. A reminder, please do not fly a torn/tattered badly faded flag. You can turn those flags into the Community Association Office, M-F from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The office receptionist will see to it that your flag is given to a local Scout Troop for proper disposal. Questions? Please call 642-9555.

KPAL Artist of the Month

Submitted by Kathy Pruschen, KPAL Publicity

Kings Point Art League’s “Artist of the Month” for the month of July is Marion Winsor. Marion was born in New Jersey in 1932, and grew up in Asbury Park along the Jersey Shore. She was married in 1951, had 3 sons, and retired from AT&T in New Jersey in 1988. After spending the first 14 years of their retirement in Colorado, Marion and her husband found their way to Sun City Center in 2002. She started Art classes shortly thereafter with Bill Greet. Marion enjoys working with Watercolors, and is mostly interested in drawing and painting animals. Widowed in 2009, she stopped painting for a few years, but is getting back into Art classes again and loving it. Marion hopes to continue learning and painting. Her other love is Duplicate Bridge, which takes far too much of her time, she thinks. Don’t miss seeing Marion’s beautiful paintings in the Art Studio window at the North Kings Point Clubhouse during the month of July, from July 6th through August 3rd.

Thank you from the Patriots Club

The Club gave out miniature U.S. Flags for the Memorial Day Remembrance at the Borini Theatre. The Club also solicited donations for the Veterans Rehabilitation Program at the James A. Hailey Veterans Hospital. The Club thanks all who gave so generously. The monies collected will be put to good use.

Lions Honored

Recently, Sun City Center Lions members were honored for their many years of service. They are Ron Lonergan with 46 years; Al Schneider with 56 years; and Tom Wolfe with 55 years of service. In addition there are a number of others with many years of service: George Banes, 47; Chuck Feil, 55, and Bob Saxon, 45 years. These 6 Lions have a combined total of 304 years of Lions membership. Congratulations, Lions, and thank you so much for all your years of dedication and hard work. It is much appreciated.

Care for the Caregiver

Submitted by Debbie Caneen Being a caregiver will take its toll in so many different ways but today we will focus on the financial aspect of caregiving. Scenario: Mr. Smith has Dementia and is unable to be left at home alone due to safety concerns. Mrs. Smith is a frail lady who loves her husband and wants him to remain in their home with her as they age. Mr. Smith has declined in his disease process to where he needs assistance will his activities of daily living. He needs assistance with bathing, dressing, meal preparation and reminders to take his medications. At first, Mrs. Smith was able to leave her husband long enough to make a dash to the grocery store and back. The last time she came home, he had a pot of soup burning on the stove. Now when Mrs. Smith needs to go to the grocery store, she must hire someone to come in to sit with Mr. Smith. The cost of a companion can run anywhere from $15 per hour for someone who will assist with meal preparation, medication reminders, laundry, etc. to $20 per hour for someone who will assist with showering and dressing Mr. Smith along with helping him get to the restroom. Long term care policies with typically assist in paying for most of these services and if Mr. Smith is a war time veteran, he may receive benefits from the Veteran’s Administration to help offset the cost of his care. There are two types of companies who provide companion care. Those who are nurse registries and

those who are not. A Nurse Registry is a company who offers family referral services to independent contractors. Those independent contractors if injured on the job would require Mrs. Smith to pay for their worker’s compensation costs. A non-nurse registry companion company sends out employees, not independent contractors so Mrs. Smith is protected. The cost difference between the companies can be a few dollars per hour. Be sure to ask when hiring someone to come into your home if they are a Nurse Registry or if the person they are sending out is covered under their Worker’s Compensation plan. There are also sometimes respite apartments available in a secure environment to care for your loved one should the caregiver need medical attention or just some time away. So how well can Mrs. Smith take care of Mr. Smith, manage the household and care for her own needs? It’s not an easy proposition but Sun City Center does have some resources. For assistance in the home or respite care, contact: The Samaritan Alzheimer’s Auxiliary located at 916 Pebble Beach Blvd. North Sun City Center, FL 33573. Phone: 813-634-9283. The team there will guide you to the best resources available in our area. Pelican Players Summer Play

July, 2013

Rehearsals are now underway for “The Nest and The Birdcage,” an original melodrama, written and directed by Andy Oosthuizen. Sun City Center residents know Mr. Oosthuizen as the owner/ producer/director of the former Palace Dinner Theatre. Since the Palace closed, Andy has been busy writing plays, teaching acting and working on several other projects. His acting talent was on display this spring when he performed in Skeletons, one of five short plays in the Pelican Players successful production of “The Bench Mark.” The cast for “The Nest and The Birdcage” includes Delyse Axinn, Linda Halperin, Marsha Lucidi, and Mary Anne Mosely. The play is considered a melodrama because the characters and plot are rather over-the-top in this family drama/mystery. The play tells the story of three sisters, with very different personalities and life-styles, who come together after the death of their mother. The tension amongst them is thick and it is cut with biting sarcasm and wit. Soldiers’ Return

No wimpy giggles... Only surprising chuckles, Hearty, healthy laughter straight from the depth of their bellies. With this, the common wall shakes and its cracks allow a warmth through that circles about me. I look up and smile for them. The War to end all but didn’t, the Second One, Vietnam, on and on and on... Shared experiences, hilarious and horrific, seal the century-old brotherhood Forever connecting them. Once lost, they’ve found fleeting intensive moments of joy amidst their pain. In the garden of their inner turmoil seeds of consolation and resolution germinate. Then the room from which the laughter came becomes expectedly quiet as they try to smooth the callouses left by time. Wounds deeper than physical still fester; Senses are bombarded by lightning quick flashbacks, Each one illuminates a host of images... Lost holidays, messages of helplessness sent home by phone, pizza toppings empty the mess hall ‘frig, cases of (unneeded) necessities. The battles still wage within those for whom the war is far from over. Fears, tears.... and then the cheers resume. Seriousness becomes the laughter again that soothes mind, heals soul, awakens spirit and strengthens weary, ailing bodies...for now. Here and for those beyond earth’s pull, they have served and learn to honor themselves as Heroes...as we should, as we do.

Justin Paskert Celebrates First Mass

Justin Paskert, a life-long resident of Ruskin was recently ordained to the Catholic Priesthood by the Most Reverend Robert N. Lynch, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Saint Petersburg. He celebrated his First Mass of Thanksgiving at Saint Anne Catholic Church on Sunday, May 19. Father Justin is the first member of the Saint Anne Parish, which was founded in 1956, to be ordained a priest. Family and friends, along with many proud parishioners, lined up after the Mass to receive his First Blessing and to honor him at an outdoor brunch reception. Father Paskert has already assumed his clerical responsibilities at Saint Antioch Catholic Church in Tarpon Springs. He looks forward to the challenges of his vocation and is grateful for the opportunity to serve God’s people.

New Rabbi

Beth Israel, the Jewish congregation of Sun City Center, is pleased to announce the appointment of Rabbi Carla Freedman as its spiritual leader. Rabbi Freedman, the first full-time rabbi to serve Beth Israel, will begin her appointment on July 1st. Rabbi Freedman was born and grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She has a rich, lifelong, history of Jewish involvement and was the first Canadian woman to be ordained a Rabbi at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio. In her own words, she has continued since that date to “convey the richness, joy and depth of meaning of Jewish life so as to encourage Jews to become more engaged with their heritage and religion”. She states that she considers it a remarkable privilege to walk with people, individually and as families through the challenges that life can present, and these opportunities have afforded her some of the most satisfying experiences of her rabbinate. Rabbi Carla spent a weekend at Beth Israel early in February, and the congregation was impressed with her knowledge, spirituality, and the ease with which she related to its members. This begins a very exciting chapter in the life of Beth Israel and the community.

Admiral authorizes Stand-in for Change of Command

The Silver Osprey Squadron #64 of the Association of Naval Aviation held its Change of Command at their May 10 luncheon meeting. Outgoing Commanding Officer, RADM Larry Chambers, USN (ret.) was unable to attend but authorized a personal representative (pictured) to bear proper witness to the changing of the guard. CDR Bo Heininger, USN (ret.), current Operations Officer and Founder of the Silver Osprey Squadron, handed the gavel to CDR Roger Kennicutt, USN (ret.). Tom Harding was installed as Executive Officer, and LT Barry Dyer, USN (ret.) will be the new Administrative Officer. The presentation topic for the event was an over-view of Patrol Squadron aircraft beginning with early WW II through the present day. The speakers were members of the Silver Osprey Squadron, who spent much of their Navy careers flying patrol

aircraft. To keep the talk within reasonable time limits, only the land based patrol aircraft were discussed. Our first speaker was CDR Howard “Bo” Heininger who graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1946. His sea duty included 2 years on the destroyer USS Witek (DD 848) and four years in Patrol Squadron Seven flying P2V Neptunes. His

squadron was the only Atlantic VP squadron to participate in the Korean War. We normally would list career long biographies for each speaker, but for this presentation, we will stress their time involved with naval patrol aviation. In “Bo” s case, before he retired after a 21 year navy career, he got all of the US armed forces to standardize on the same altimeter, contributing

greatly to aviation safety. He then went on to a very successful career with IBM. After retirement from IBM, he moved to Sun City Center. He became chairman of The Retired Officers Group, and caused it to change to a Retired Officer Association (TROA) Chapter. He also found time to start up two Association of Naval Aviation chapters that are still active today: The Golden Pelican Squadron of Sarasota, and The Silver Osprey Squadron of Sun City Center. One of the first land based patrol planes was the Lockheed PV-1 Ventura. Venturas of squadron VP-135 flew the first combat missions from the Aleutian Islands in April 1943. Toward the very end of the war (Aug 2, 1945), a PV-1 on a routine patrol flight flown by Lieutenant Chuck Gwinn and Lieutenant Warren Colwell, spotted men adrift in the sea below. It turned out that they were the survivors of the Continued on Page 27

sinking of the USS Indianapolis that had been torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on July 30. The amazing thing was that LTs Gwinn and Colwell were not actively searching for the survivors of a missing ship. The Navy Command did not even know a ship was missing until the moment the PV-1 crew spotted survivors by accident! They were on a routine patrol tirelessly scanning the ocean below in the hope of finding anything out of the ordinary. To learn more about this tragedy, which was eclipsed by the dropping of the Hiroshima bomb on Aug. 6, 1945, just search the internet with the phrase, USS Indianapolis. The USS Indianapolis had carried the bomb to Tinian Island just two weeks before, on October 6, 2009, The Silver Osprey Squadron was privileged to hear a talk by survivor Ensign Harlan M. Twibel of Sarasota, FL. Ensign Twibel had graduated from Annapolis less than two months prior to the sinking. The only other land based patrol aircraft used during the Second World War were the Consolidated PB4Y Privateers, better known as modified B-24 Liberators, but with a single tail. They were flown by Patrol Bomber squadrons VPB-118 and VPB-119 starting in the fall of 1944. “Bo” also spoke about his experiences in all of the various models of the P2V Neptune, which entered service in 1946 and retired in the late 1970s. The most famous P2V, named the Truculent Turtle, piloted by Commander Tom Davies and three other seasoned patrol plane pilots, set the unrefueled aircraft distance record in 1946, by flying non-stop from Perth, Australia, to Columbus, Ohio. It was a distance of 11,236 miles and took two and one half days (55.3 hrs). The record stood for 16 years. The “Turtle” has been preserved at the National Museum of Naval Aviation at NAS Pensacola. In some cases, one P2V-3W acted the hunter and handed it off to a P2V-3 killer, with more ordnance, to move in for the kill. Later as the P2V took on both hunter and killer roles, the weight of extra search equipment and ordnance, required the change to turbo compounded engines. And still later, two jet engines were mounted in pods under the wings of the P2V-5F. CDR Heininger said that the early P2V-4s often had problems with the turbo compounded engines, but the final model, the P2V-7, was a very reliable and effective anti-submarine and anti-shipping aircraft. In the mid 1960s, the model designation was changed to SP-2H. It is interesting to note that the last operational flight of the SP-2H had as its co-pilot, Rear Admiral Tom Davies, the lead pilot on the Truculent Turtle’s record flight 24 years earlier. At this point in the program, CDR Heininger turned the presentation over to CAPT Robert Wisdom. Bob Wisdom attended Drake University in Des Moines, IA, before joining the US Navy’s

Speakers, Captain Dic Patrucci_ Commander Bo Heininger and Captain Bob Wistom.

Naval Aviation Cadet Program (NAVCAD). After earning his wings in December of 1953, he joined VP-5, the first of his three VP squadrons, flying the P2V-5 Neptune. Later, after completing a tour as an S2F Tracker carrier qualification instructor, he was fortunate to be assigned to VP-44 at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. CAPT Wisdom was in the first group of pilots to be transitioned to the new P3V-1 (later renamed the P3A) Orion. He was one of the first pilots to fly the first P3 missions during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1970 he was named Commanding Officer of VP-49 and made the first operational deployment of the new P3C model. The experiences of that deployment led to rapid improvements of the P3C’s ASW capabilities. In his next navy tour, he was assigned to the Naval Air Test Center, NAS Patuxent River, MD, and flew the test trials of the twin fan jet Lockheed S3A Viking carrier ASW aircraft. After Navy retirement, CAPT Wisdom flew for several years in corporate aviation out of the Tampa Bay area. CAPT Wisdom began his portion of the presentation by talking about the history of the P3 design. The first test flight was in August 1958 and was a modified Lockheed Electra. Fleet introduction didn’t begin until 1962, but constant updating over the years has continued to the P3Cs of today. Bob Wisdom was in on much of that updating, and was able to give us many of the interesting details. The P3 Orion has four Allison T56 turboprop engines of 4600 HP each giving it a speed comparable to the early turbojets (over 400 knots) but with significantly better endurance for the ASW mission. They have had a very successful run of 51 years so far, and in over 50 variations with the United States and seventeen allied nations. The Orions will be used until replaced by the Boeing P8-A Poseidon. CAPT Wisdom ended his portion of the talk by saying that the P3 Orion is one of the finest, most versatile and enduring aircraft in the Navy’s inventory. He then turned the lectern over to CAPT Richard Petrucci, who discussed the merits of the new P8 Poseidon. CAPT Dick Petrucci graduated from the Naval Academy in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in engineering. He was designated a Naval Aviator in 1963 and served for 25 years. His flying assignments included four tours of duty in patrol squadrons including command of Patrol Squadron 26 in Brunswick, ME.

Dick also graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA with a master’s degree in Computer Science. He has over 7500 hours of pilot time. After his Navy retirement in 1986, he spent 12 years as a senior engineer and in management for Lockheed-Martin. CAPT Petrucci said the P8 got off to a great head start because it was based on one of the world’s most successful airliners, the Boeing 737. The engines are considered among the most efficient and reliable in the world. They are the product of CFM International, a joint company of General Electric and Snecma Moteurs. They each provide 27,000 pounds of thrust. The first P8 flight occurred on 25 April 2009. It will initially have the latest P3 Orion systems to be upgraded later to more advanced technology. CAPT Petrucci is excited about the ability of this aircraft to be perhaps the most important link in finding and

tracking all enemy submarines (from unfriendly nations or rogue terror groups). It can be on station for long time periods as it is designed to accept aerial refueling by Air Force Tankers. While on station, it will provide real time information to a whole host of other air, surface and land resources. It is quite an example of an increase in technology from the days submarines were located by a circle of sonobuoys seen visually from the cockpit. It is not perfected yet, but GPS sonobuoy locations should soon be able to be read to a matter of feet, just as golfers can accurately read the distance from their ball position to the pin on the green using GPS! On January 30, 2013, Patrol Squadron Sixteen became the first operational squadron to fly the P-8A Poseidon. The CO of VP-16 is CDR Molly Boron, the first woman P8 squadron commander. Her ultimate goal is to take six Poseidon aircraft on the first operational P-8A deployment to the 7th Fleet at the end of this year. The Navy plans to acquire 117 of these aircraft. From what he has seen, CAPT Petrucci predicts a long and successful future for the P-8A Poseidon. To keep abreast of our squadron plans for next year, you need only contact us at silverosprey@yahoo.com, or go to www.suncitycenter.org, select “Activities”, then “Veterans”.

Contract Bridge Super Crossword

By Steve Becker AN UNUSUAL SAFETY PLAY

NOTHING IN BETWEEN

There are times when declarer must make what appears to be a senseless play in order to give himself the maximum chance for his contract. The play might seem foolish if it later turns out to be unnecessary, but when the play proves to be essential, declarer has something worth talking about. Take this case where West leads a club against four hearts. South wins with dummy’s ace, returns a low trump and, after East plays the eight, finesses the

Solutions on Page 31

jack! The finesse appears absurd, considering that South possesses 10 trumps headed by the A-K-J. But, oddly enough, it is the right play -- not because the finesse succeeds in the actual deal, but because it assures the contract against any distribution of the opposing cards. To appreciate the advantage of the finesse, let’s assume that declarer makes the more normal play of the ace on the first round of trumps. After West shows out, South must go down one, losing a trick in each suit. Now let’s assume that when South finesses the jack, it loses to the queen. This is not cause for alarm, because the contract is still fully under control. The best the defenders can do in that case is to cash a club and shift to a diamond. South wins the diamond return, draws the one missing trump and plays the king of spades. West takes his ace, but that’s the end of the line for the defense. South later crosses to dummy’s nine of trumps and discards his diamond loser on the queen of spades. In effect, the trump finesse is a safety play to guard against a 3-0 trump division. Quite often it will cost declarer a 30-point trick, but that is a very small price to pay for ensuring a vulnerable game. ©2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Strange But True

By Samantha Weaver • It was architect Frank Lloyd Wright who made the following sage observation: “A doctor can bury his mistakes, but an architect can only advise his clients to plant vines.” • If you take the free toiletries when you stay in a hotel, you’re not alone; fully 92 percent of travelers do so. • In a traditional wedding in Fiji, the groom is expected to present the bride’s father with a tooth from a whale, and the bride gets tattooed before the ceremony. • You might be surprised to learn that lightning isn’t confined to thunderstorms; the phenomenon can also occur in hurricanes, forest fires, volcanic eruptions and even serious snowstorms. • What’s in a name? A great deal, it turns out, if you’re talking about housing prices. Those who study such things say that a house on a “boulevard” is valued at over one-third more than the same house that has “street” in its address. • Before the 1976 film “Star Wars” was released, the studio, Twentieth Century Fox, conducted some marketing research on the movie. The results? It was concluded that robots would turn off most viewers, and that under no circumstances should the word “war” be used in the title. Obviously, filmmaker George Lucas ignored the advice. • Idi Amin may be best remembered as Uganda’s corrupt and violent dictator during most of the 1970s, but from 1951 to 1960, he was that country’s heavyweight boxing champion. • The literal translation of “karate” from the Japanese is “empty hand.” Thought for the Day: “There are two ways of constructing a software design; one way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies. The first method is far more difficult.” -C.A.R. Hoare © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Salome’s Stars

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your creative side is enhanced by indulging yourself in as much artistic inspiration (music, art, dance, etc.) as you can fit into your schedule. Take someone special with you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Take a little restorative time out of your busy life. Go somewhere quiet this weekend. Or just close the door, turn on the answering machine and pretend you’re away. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your advice might be much in demand by family and friends this week. But reserve time for yourself to investigate a project that could have some unexpected potential. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Work-related issues demand your attention in the early part of the week. Family matters dominate Thursday and Friday. But the weekend is yours to spend as you please. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Try to keep your temper in check as you deal with someone who seems to enjoy showing disrespect. Losing your Leonine cool might be just what the goader hopes to see. VIRGO (August 23 to Sept. 22) A heated confrontation needs some cool-off time before it boils over. Better to step away than to try to win an argument where emotions overrule the facts. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Someone very special in your life finally sends that reassuring message you’ve been hoping for. You can now devote more time to the tasks you had put aside. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Job pressures begin to ease by the week’s end, leaving you time to relax and restore your energy levels before you face next week’s emerging challenges. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Your spiritual strength helps calm a friend who might be facing an unsettling change in his or her life. An offer to help comes from a surprising source. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) By midweek you could learn some surprising facts about an associate that might cause you to reconsider a long-held view about someone in your past. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb.18) One of those rare-for-you darker moods sets in in the early part of the week. But by Thursday, the clouds lift and you’re back doing nice things for people in need. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Use that sharp Piscean perceptiveness to reel in more information about a promising offer so that you have the facts to back up whatever decision you make. BORN THIS WEEK: Although you prefer the status quo, you easily can adapt to change when it’s called for. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.
