Recognised LEGO User Group [LUG] with the LEGO Group in 2014. Rainbow Bricks holds 7-8 LEGO Fan Events each year across NSW and each event donates the funds raised to a different charity. The exhibitors are all volunteers who donated their time and energy to these event, for the love of the LEGO Brick and the joy it bring the kids who visit our events. Brickfest’s Kevin Evans got involved with Lego as a child, and rediscovered it when his son started playing and learning with Lego when he was aged 5. LEGO is now a great entry level way for students to get involved in robotics. Kevin Evans told News Of The Area “Lego can be used for basic robotics, you can learn a lot from Lego.” Mrs Xenos Principal of Tomaree High School told News Of The Area, “I would like to acknowledge the work of STEM teacher Mr Hartmann in securing this donation. The kits will be used by year 10 students studying the STEM elective. “They will be of great benefit to the students as it will give them the opportunity to further develop their coding skills. The students will learn how robotics can be used to find solutions to challenging problems. “I am very interested in how the students will use the kits and look forward to seeing what they create,” she said. Brickfest will be back in 2019 and you can find out more about the colourful hands on event at https:// www.facebook.com/ brickfestatthebay/

exploring relationships in coastal communities, was officially launched at the Newcastle Writers Festival last weekend. Joanna said many of the fictitious stories in her book were influenced by the coastlines of Port Stephens. “It was important to have that local connection to my area, and to my area of interest,” she said. “The coast is never just a setting, it is also part of the story.” In front of hundreds of people who crammed into Newcastle City Hall for the launch, acclaimed author Robert

q Author Joanna Atherfold Finn with her newly published book, Watermark. Drewe described Watermark as having the “essential wow factor”. “This book has a rare and precise power that speaks to us and seems real, we recognise

something of our own lives in it,” he said. From a boy with dyslexia who finds the right words in the ocean, a drifter and her son who discover the true meaning of home, to a widower coping with the aftermath of his wife’s death, each of the 11 interlinked stories reveal how people respond to the uncertainty and disorder of life-changing events. Much like the characters in her book, Joanna’s own life has taken many unexpected twists and turns, resembling the constant movement of the changing tides along the coastlines that captivate her. The turning point for Joanna was enrolling in a Communications degree as a mature aged student, reigniting her passion in creative writing and paving the way for Watermark, which came from the three and a half years she spent studying for her Doctorate. She now happily balances writing, family life and tutoring

students with the abalone business she operates with her husband in Port Stephens, all of which relate to her writing. “I’m immersed in the local fishing business, so the coastal characters are a day-to-day feature in my life,” she said. “I write what I know, but I also write to find out what I don’t know, there is a point where imagination just takes over.” Watermark is published by major international book publisher, Simon & Schuster. “When I read coastal novels or short stories by other writers, they resonate with my own experiences and make me reflect on a coastal life,” Joanna said. “I hope this book does the same for others.” o Phot ery Gall line On

TEARS of joy fell when local Raymond Terrace athlete, Ms Natasha Scott, won a gold medal on Day 5 at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018. The Australian Women’s fours lawns bowls team beat South Africa 18-16 in the final to take out the gold medal. Held at the Broadbeach Bowls Club, a beautiful site overlooking the famous beach, for the first time in 12 years Australian lawn bowls won gold at a Commonwealth Games. The team made it to the finals after beating Canada in the semi-finals in what proved to be a tightly contested match, with the Aussies winning 10-9 against the Canadians. Ms Scott spoke to News Of The Area, saying, “It is an unbelievable experience to be holding a gold medal with three of your good mates that are also your teammates.” “We had a very tough

final.” “Bring on the triples!” Australian coach and himself a former Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Mr Kelvin Kerkow admitted the home ground advantage helped the team, saying in a statement, “Broadbeach is where the players have been participating, practicing and trialling in all conditions.” Ms Scott who trains at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club was supported by many fans who have been closely following all her games and sending well wishes to her up the coast; an effort that has paid off with the ultimate in Commonwealth Games glory, a gold medal, being attained. At the end of Day 5 competition, Australia was well ahead of the pack, and beating the traditional sporting foe, England to claim a medal tally of 106 which included 39 Gold, 33 Silver, and 34 Bronze.

Tour of Griffith Riverina

By Noel FINCH

MEMBERS of Port Stephens Friendship Group together with friends in the area recently enjoyed a 6day/5night tour through the Griffith/Leeton Riverina Region. Tours included the Aviation Museum at Temora, the Catania Fruit Salad Farm, Calabria Winery and Riverina Grove while staying in Griffith. In Leeton the Rocking Horse Museum and the old Roxy Cinema Complex still operates built around the same time as Parramatta Roxy Theatre were of much interest. Through Whitton, such an old town with courthouse, museum and railway station. Devastation showed throughout the tour for the farmers on the land due to drought. In Weethalle we viewed the Painted Grain Silos before arriving in Forbes calling into McFeeters Car Museum staying overnight in Parkes and experiencing the ‘Dish’ next morning before heading back home. What an unforgettable tour we all enjoyed and do thank the Port Stephens Coaches for their very much appreciated itinerary. The Port Stephens

Friendship Group meets at 5.00pm on the last Tuesday of each month at the Wests Diggers, Nelson Bay.

THE Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group held its 12th annual In The Pink Golf Day recently. The theme of the day was the Village People and Nelson Bay Golf Club looked like it had been invaded by the 1970s. Bev Apps of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group told News Of The Area, “The 14th hole, known as ‘The Party Hole’, proved to be popular, it was manned by ‘macho men’ serving bubbly and cupcakes with the Village People music playing. “To top the fun off for a gold coin donation two members from the club, Peter Sutton and Tony Short known as the ‘Hotshots’, would hit your ball across the lake for you,” she said.

There were 168 players for the event which was full of fun. “We as always are very appreciative of the amazing generosity of the local business community and individuals with their donations for raffle prizes or sponsoring one of the 18 holes’” she said. The winning team was Barbara Frose, Barbara Clark, Sue Lewis and Carol Gilmour. Best Dressed Team was taken out by Bev Suska, Julie Newsham, Linda Drake and Gail Murray. All funds raised by the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group go towards supporting residents of the peninsula through their breast cancer journey. Yesterday I went to buy some half-price Easter eggs and instead I was greeted with Mother’s Day cards. When will this cycle ever end? Miss AG, Salamander Bay

Dear Miss AG,

Do you ever find yourself parked at traffic lights, or waiting to do a U-turn because despite the signs and the road blocks, you still think that you can turn right into Salamander Shopping Centre at that crazy intersection that nobody likes (except for one lone engineer with a quirky sense of humour) and you start singing, ‘Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage’? I do. I do this frequently, because, dear Miss AG, we are just rats, circling aimlessly on the spinning wheel of life and that spinning wheel involves lots of opportunities to buy celebratory presents for celebratory occasions, even when we don’t feel like it. Mother’s Day, though, is a bit of an exception. Mothers spend their lives doing things that aren’t a whole lot of fun. Sorting socks, cleaning, mowing lawns, waiting on the very uncomfortable seats at soccer training, holding down executive jobs, returning to make chicken soup with crusty bread rolls, joining committees, manning cake stalls, shuffling kids off to school, agonising over school assignments, starting paleo diets, stopping paleo diets, watching brain-dead shows at midnight because we are, quite literally, brain dead by that stage, and then waking up and doing it all again. And all we ask for, Miss AG, is a bit of a sleep-in on Mother’s Day, followed by a corny card written by someone who clearly doesn’t know the meaning of the word Thesaurus, and perhaps an egg on toast. Forget the sprig of parsley. Forget the ‘sunny-side-up’ request. We will accept just about anything, as long as you leave us there, in the comfort of our bed for at least one hour longer than usual. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Stroud Central Hotel the spot to be By Rachael VAUGHAN

WE’VE got the perfect gig for you this week, and if you’re not a Stroud local, we are challenging you to get out there and visit somewhere new. The Stroud Central Hotel is the venue for your miniroad trip North, one of the best kept secrets in the list of Pubs around Port Stephens and the Hunter. Half an hour up the highway, and turn left onto

the Bucketts way and keep going until you spot it,, this great old Hotel has a family friendly atmosphere you’ll really love. Fantastic beer garden, outdoor sports screen, kids play area and TV room, great food, cold beer and a passion for supporting live local music. This week’s gig is guaranteed to impress and have the toes tapping. Sat 14 at 7:30pm will see brothers Zac and Ben take

the stage. The boys are a unique music duo hailing from the Hunter region. The two have a wealth of experience performing live and for a variety of occasions whether being a wedding, special event or a backyard party. The duo, who’ve had success with their former bands Powerage, Jupiter Menace and current band ‘Crawford Brothers’, create a high energy act that offers

something different, catering for all occasions. The boys have an endless catalogue of material ranging from the rock and blues music of the 60’s and 70’s, to current top 40 hits. Ben on keyboard and vocals and Zac on guitar, vocals and stomp box, are

both multi instrumentalists, occasionally switching between them, using loop effects and taking requests on the spot. Throughout the Brothers’ endeavors on the live music scene they’ve shared the stage with some of music’s best including; Matchbox

20, Thirsty Merc, Grinspoon and the Radiators and have been performing together professionally since 10 and 14 years old. They’re a duo that quite literally offers something for everyone. Coupled with the laidback venue of the Stroud Central Hotel, we guarantee that it’s a road trip those not local to Stroud will be glad they took.
