was overwhelmed with customers throughout the day, with the event attracting more than anticipated numbers. Cr Doohan told News Of The Area, “Ben and I couldn’t be prouder of the amazing effort of our incredible town.” “We had three boxes to tick in this four week campaign; to make as much money to help the farmers as we could, to bring our town together and show the strength of the Medowie community spirit, and to raise awareness of this crisis.” “All three were totally exceeded,” he said. “Medowie, you are awesome.” The event raised over $70,000, a fantastic achievement for a small community. Attendees at the event were generous with their purchasing of goods on the day, with event shirts, coolers and hats running out the door. Raffle tickets were purchased in large quantities, and many in the crowd were moved by a number of auction bidders who drove the price up to win their chosen items, only to turn around after paying for their item and donate it back to be auctioned again for even more funds. Mr Gary Bentley, representing Rural Aid and also a counsellor for the charity told News Of The Area, “Rural Aid is a Charity that’s been going for several years.” “It started out as the Buy-a-Bale initiative.” “As the drought got worse, we realised we

Prepare for Season WITH all of NSW in the vice like grip of drought, volunteer firefighters are looking ahead to what could be a serious bushfire season. Tinder dry scrub, the build-up of ground fuel and dire weather predictions all point to perfect firestorm conditions waiting to engulf the State. The Tilligerry Brigade

is honing its skills in preparation for the earlier than expected call-outs. News Of The Area caught up with them recently on the Worimi land at Tanilba Bay where they were using the dam water to practise open and closed circuit pumping techniques. These skills are essential in rural areas as there are

no water mains which can be tapped from stand-pipes connected to urban hydrant points. Long time Captain George Brandenburg said that the Brigade always welcomed new members. “Long term commitment is what it’s all about” Captain Brandenburg said, “We invest a lot of time and effort in training recruits and in return, we expect that they will be there for the long haul.”

Safe Haven For Women

By Marian SAMPSON

THE community of the Tomaree Peninsula has come together to celebrate a milestone at the Yacaaba Centre. For quite a few months construction has been taking place to create three tiny houses to assist middle aged women who are escaping a domestic violence situation to have a safe haven. Lynn Vatner of the Yacaaba Centre told News Of The Area, “We are at a point where women will be housed in the three new units by September.” Friends With Dignity have offered their services to assist with the furnishing of the units. “These three new units will add to the one house and two brick units already on the site.” The units will be housing middle aged women who are the fastest growing cohort of homelessness in Australia. “It comes back to these women having to survive on

Those who use the housing must stay in contact and access the services of the Yacaaba Centre services. “Escaping a bad situation and being on their own is better than being with someone who is causing these women so much pain,” she said.

the local News Of The Area (NOTA) newspaper are championing these Awards. One of the organisers Suzane Hamilton said, “The top eight stories receive cash prizes totalling $1100 and Certificates of Attainment are issued in

Three new independent judges then rate them from one to twenty an add up the points to decide the winners,“ Ms Hamilton said. This exhaustive process takes over a month after the closing date of 30 September with winners announced in November. All those receiving prizes will be contacted by phone and listed on a result sheet on www.tilligerry.com Full details of the competition and entry conditions can now be accessed on this website by clicking on ‘Literature Award’ in the left hand green sidebar.

THE Rivergum Grandparents as Parents Support Group has been relaunched, with local State Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington MP accepting the Group’s offer to become their very first Patron. The Group has re-emerged after leaving The Samaritans. “We have moved away and decided to branch out on our own, and we are excited for our new direction,” Secretary Gavin Breen told News Of The Area. “We want to make sure we are supporting each other and the kids we raise, and we are now a fully registered and insured entity as Rivergum

Grandparents as Parents Support Group Inc.” As the name suggests, the Group exists to support Grandparents who have taken up the role of parenting their Grandchildren but it is also open to relatives who raise children that are not their own. The Rivergum Grandparents as Parents Support Group is about being more than a sympathetic ear to those kindred carers to talk to someone who understands their plight, but to also enable outings which can be a great financial burden. Local Artists Pride Of Place By Marian SAMPSON

ANNA Bay has a new look thanks to two local artists Rhys Fabris and Nick Stuart. The once blank brick wall adjacent to an empty overgrown block in the main street area of Anna Bay has been given new life. The stunning artwork features a theme around the surf culture, lifestyle and natural assets of Anna Bay. Nick Stuart told News Of The Area, “The artwork is about expressing our gratitude to the local environment and

what it means to live in Anna Bay with its beautiful wildlife and surf culture.” Nick and Rhys believe that the artwork is also a statement about pride of place for Anna Bay locals. It is a year since Nick Stuart completed the artwork of whales which is featured on the opposite side of the street on the Vinnies building and now Anna Bay has another statement artwork. The artwork took over 200 hours to complete and evolved in what the artists described as a roller coaster journey.

They hope that the dynamic artwork has something for everyone from the koalas and vibrant lorikeet to the whales tale and Kombi. They believe that Anna Bay has more available old buildings perfect for graffiti and art murals which amplify the buildings architecture. There are more blank spaces in Anna Bay that Rhys and Nick would like to turn into statement placemaking artworks and they are seeking support from business and the community to help fund their artworks, which have

Round-a-bout larger than expected

q The newly opened roundabout at Tanilba Bay. WITH the five-way $1.5 million roundabout now operational at Tanilba Bay’s entrance, Councillor Steve Tucker, who expanded on the project, was keen to clarify issues that have been raised

by the community. “Let me explain how we got the roundabout,” he said. “It was a grant by the NSW Government which gifted us $1.5 million under their ‘Black Spot’ initiative.”

“We had to apply and if computer records of accidents at the intersection indicated we had more than in other areas, we were considered,” Councillor Tucker said.

“There was no way that this money could be transferred to other roadworks,” he said. “If we get extra funds due to a rate increase and are allocated our fair share (TIlligerry) of road funding, then ‘Avenue of

The artists donated both their time and the materials to create the mural which now enhances the streetscape of Anna Bay.

the Allies’ will be the number one priority with ‘Tanilba Rd Mallabula’ at number two,” he stated. “The central island of the roundabout will be landscaped and illuminated with power and water supply available,” he said. “On top of this we (Port Stephens Council) will be consulting with local art groups to construct a welcoming mural. A ‘Gateway Statement’ which will create a positive impression for visitors as they roll into town,” he said. “We will also be consulting with the RSL sub-branch about installing halyards at street level to hoist flags on ANZAC Day,” Councillor Tucker said.

In summing up Rhys Fabris said, “Gratitude is the attitude, and flourish serenity.” We inspected the traffic flow after the roundabout was opened and noticed a remarkable decrease in the speed of traffic both entering and exiting the town. The structure has acted as as ‘traffic calmer’.

Tomaree Chamber Wins at Hunter Business Awards By Marian SAMPSON

THE Tomaree Business Chamber has tackled some big issues this year and while the results of their efforts can be seen in the Nelson Bay streetscape they are also being recognised as being the best of the best in the region. Chamber President and Port Stephens Woman of the Year Leah Anderson is with her Board and team of volunteers certainly creating a better place to do business, not just in Nelson Bay but across the whole Peninsula. The Chamber has won the prestigious Hunter Business Awards category of best local Chamber of Commerce for 2018. The Chamber has made some hard decisions this

year and introduced some new initiatives including the engagement of some 70 plus volunteers to revitalise the town centre of Nelson Bay. Chamber President Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “I am really proud to be President of the Tomaree Business Chamber and to be able to work with such a wonderful volunteer Board, we have a great vision for the Peninsula and are very proud of this Award which is recognising the work that we and all the volunteers (who help us) do.” Some of the key activities of the Chamber at present include participation in Nelson Bay Now, commissioning the study which has identified a need for a higher education hub

in the Nelson Bay CBD and making the Peninsula a better place to do business. The Chamber is now a finalist in the NSW Business Chamber of the Year Award which will be announced in November. While the Blue Water Country Music Festival structure changed Tastes at the Bay is still a Chamber event and it will run on the first weekend of November. The Chamber is holding a Meet the Member event on 15 August at Nelson Bay Golf Club where Council will be presenting on the Special Rate Variation Proposal. Racing Team in fine form By Rachael VAUGHAN

IF you were not aware that Medowie had its own cycle club, then you need to get yourself acquainted with The Little Pantry Co Racing Team. The Little Pantry Co Racing Team has had a consistent start since they burst onto the racing scene on the Easter long weekend earlier this year. Since then, the team has

stacked up a total of nine podiums and amassed five first place finishes in the local road racing scene. Team member, Tom O’Neill, told News Of The Area, “The team has notched up several more results across the mountain bike and cyclocross disciplines that shows the teams diversity and abilities on the bike.” “Whilst the Manager has gone into hibernation during

this winter season, the rest of the team has been inspired by Le Tour De France and is getting out amongst the chilling mornings, pushing out a lot of kms to remain in good form.” The team is very much looking forward to the warmer months ahead as the racing scene heats up. The next big race on the horizon for the team is the Wooton Classic in August.

Vietnam Veterans Day 2018

It has Grown to be a Day to Remember the Service and Sacrifice of all Vietnam Veterans from the Australian Army, Navy, and Airforce.

By Rachael VAUGHAN

VIETNAM Veterans Day annual commemorative services will be held across Port Stephens on Saturday, 18 August. RSL sub-branch groups across Port Stephens will be hosting the commemorations. The Nelson Bay RSL Sub-branch will be holding their service at the Apex Park Memorial on Victoria Road, Nelson Bay commencing at 11.00am. Medowie RSL Subbranch will hold their service at Lions Memorial Park in Medowie, commencing at 10:30am. Karuah RSL Subbranch will this year host a combined service with Tea Gardens Sub Branch and Veterans from Bulahdelah and Nabiac, commencing at 11am at the Memorial in Karuah. Tilligerry and Raymond Terrace RSL Sub-branch are also expected to hold services, with details to be confirmed shortly.

Vietnam Veterans Day was originally a day in commemoration of the Battle of Long Tan, which took place on 18 August 1966. It has grown to be a day to remember the service and sacrifice of all Vietnam Veterans from the Australian Army, Navy, and Airforce. Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War went for over a decade from 1962 to the end of the war in 1975, making it Australia’s longest war at the time. Of the 60,000 serving Australians, 521 were killed, and over 3,000 wounded. Mr Russell Durant from Nelson Bay RSL sub-branch spoke with News Of The Area about his service. “I was a National serviceman called up in the first intake on 31 June, 1965 for two years’ service.” “After three months basic training at Puckapunyal in Victoria, I was posted to the 5th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, an Infantry Battalion at Holsworthy.”

“After a lot more training and learning new skills, I flew out of RAAF Richmond on a Qantas Boeing 707 with civilian crew at midnight on 6 May 1966 arriving at Saigon the next morning.” “After two weeks acclimation training we airlifted to the area known as Nui Dat where the 1st Australian Task Force was to be located.” “I spent the next 12 months with great mates, with whom I share a bond that will never be broken, from the most mundane of time on base, or getting organised for operations, to the madness of combat.” “For me, Vietnam Veterans Day is a time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and those who have and are still suffering from the effects of their service.” “Lots are still fighting the hidden demons, and I will be with my mates, telling a few stories and having a few beers.”

What’s the best ‘Pet Protocol’ when Selling? BT. Medowie

Great Question BT. Selling a home with pets in situ has its challenges. Here’s how to overcome some of them, so they don’t affect your potential sale.

Mrs KG, Tea Gardens

Dear Mrs KG, You know, I’m a bit behind the eight ball, so I logged on to one of those community swap sites that I’ve never been game to peruse before because I thought they were a platform for toey swingers swapping their partners, and what I found was even more alarming. I actually pondered whether there was some sort of pre-World War III ration battle going on, such was the intensity of product swapping out there in suburbia. There were comments like: ‘I’ll give you pasta sauce for the Messy Monkeys” and “Not sure where you are, but I have Oak Milk and need dog food”. What the fricken’ frick is going on? Are we on The Truman Show? Have we entered some sort of parallel universe? Is there a Prozac shortage happening that I don’t know about that is making household shoppers completely bat shit crazy? We have a little global issue at the moment known as CIDEAH. Haven’t heard of it? Let me enlighten you. Complete and Irreversible Destruction of the Environment by Apathetic Humans. In case you think this is just Jasminda going off on a pre-wine whine, stop listening to bogan radio and try this from the United Nations: “We are on the edge of a plastic calamity.” Calamity isn’t a word that the UN throws around lightly. Not convinced? How about washed-up whales choked with plastic? So, Mrs KG, I’m with you. The competing argument is: “But there’s so much plastic out there already. Why take it out on little plastic groceries?” That is a pathetic argument. It’s

Pets indoors: The smell they omit may not be evident to you but will be to others. Either ask an honest friend to tell you if your home smells of pets or do the precautionary. I suggest having carpets cleaned, deodorised and a flea treatment completed. Wash walls and curtains as well. Cat urine is particularly fierce and sometimes replacing the carpet and underlay is the only remedy. Family dogs barking at sales inspection times is less than ideal and if your dog is a barker he needs to go for a visit somewhere each time. Pick up the Poop. When walking around the back yard nobody wants to step in this.

region to reach the highs that she had, after all, she is the only player in the Suncorp Super Netball League that originates from the Newcastle area. After this epiphany, Sam’s “Aspire Netball Clinics” became a reality. These clinics are designed to provide a range of programs for different ages and skills levels with a focus on helping the next generation of local players to develop the skills necessary to pursue a future in Netball. And the timing couldn’t

have been better for the Medowie players. “Getting the opportunity to learn off such an influential player like Sam has been a great opportunity.” Under 13’s player Lily Foster told News Of The Area. “Especially as we head into the finals.” Sam ran two clinics with our Medowie Netballers, a junior and senior session, both of which were run at capacity and received extremely well by all in attendance.

NELSON BAY Golf Club Results - 5th to 11th August 2018

Periodically, as with all golfers, Jill Rowland’s putting has been less than average recently. The thrill of watching the ball land directly onto the 104 metre, 14th green and then roll into the hole was eclipsed by the realisation that she didn’t need to puttout. Congratulations Jill. Highlights of the week: Stephen Rigby landed an Eagle on the 438 metre, Par 5, 27th Hole in Saturday’s Competition. Congratulations Stephen
