Larrakia Artist By Rachael VAUGHAN
IF you have not experienced the artwork of Jocelyn Archer, you are missing out. Jocelyn is a proud Murri woman from the Larrakia mob from Darwin in the Northern Territory. She is an incredibly talented Indigenous artist who paints with heart, spirit and passion. Her artworks are full of culture and speak the stories of her ancestors through her brush, passing them down, ensuring they will be remembered forever. Jocelyn has been painting since she was a young girl, and credits her father with teaching her how to paint. Her favourite medium to create artworks in is acrylic paint, and she is most ‘at home’ when painting salt water animals. Jocelyn’s children and grandchildren were raised strong in their culture and are proud of their ancestry. Jocelyn’s artworks will ensure her families stories will live on, their stories will continue to be told, and they will leave their mark on this world. Her art is centred on this story telling of Aboriginal culture, and sharing knowledge of the land and beliefs of Aboriginal people.

BAYNews Of The Area Aboriginal grandmother to raffle artworks for her grandchildren
FROM Page 1
Jocelyn has four very unique pieces she has created that are destined for a special project. Two of her grandsons, Antwone and Keaundre have been selected to attend representative tours and trips, so she has decided she wants to help her family to pay for the cost of these by giving away her art to four very lucky winners. Jocelyn told News Of The Area, “These four paintings are special stories for me, and I’m pleased to see them go to some good homes to raise some money to show my grandchildren how proud I am of them and their achievements.” “The first painting is a story about hatching turtles and all us kids sitting on rapid creek beach in the Northern Territory, watching them hatch each season, and the second painting is about the Salt Water Turtle, one of our main traditional tucker.” “The third painting is in special memory of my Dad and Uncles hunting for stingrays with spears and the last one is about the Black and White cockatoos, and how they are warnings of the change of seasons, and how we would watch them after the bushfires,” she said. The competition will be announced, run and drawn on Jocelyn’s brand new art
page on Facebook.
BBQ explosion has left a young male with severe burns FROM Page 1
“I saw a boy running to the water on fire and screaming.” There was a group of teenage boys and others at the Reserve who leapt into action, with one calling 000, and others getting ice packs
newsofthearea.com.au and desperately trying to assist. Unfortunately, the ambulance drove passed the car park where the incident happened and a quickthinking teenager stopped a driver and asked if he could follow the ambulance and redirect it to the correct area. Within minutes the area was flooded with emergency services and the young man was carried from the water by friends, shaking, clearly suffering severe burns and appearing to be in shock. The Rescue Helicopter was deployed to transfer the
male to a Sydney hospital. Ambulance paramedics attended and treated five people at the scene. A 16-year-old boy suffered burns to his face, arms and torso. A man and a woman, both in their 40s, were treated for burns to their legs and torso. All three were flown by rescue helicopter to Royal North Shore Hospital. The 16-year-old boy is reportedly in a critical condition while the man and woman are in a serious but stable condition. Two others, a man and
woman in their 40s, were also treated at the scene for burns to their face and torso and were taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition. Officers from Port Stephens / Hunter Police District attended and established a crime scene. Initial investigations suggest an explosion occurred after a flammable liquid was poured onto a fire pit on a patio. Police are investigating.
Immunisation Key To Community Health
By Marian SAMPSON
SHOPPERS at Salamander Bay were recently treated to a glimpse of the past when the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay displayed a working iron lung. Used in the 1940s and 1950s the iron lung was used on polio patients who were paralysed by the disease and unable to breath unaided. The chambers were manually pumped full of air by nurses, keeping polio
patients alive. Rotary Club of Salamander Bay, President Darcy Geale told News Of The Area, “We are not just doing this to raise awareness of the need to end polio, but to raise the awareness of the need to vaccinate against diseases such as whooping cough and tuberculosis; penicillin and antibiotic resistant strands of tuberculosis have been found on our doorstep in PNG and neighbouring Islands in the
Torres Strait.” Rotarians believe that if Polio is not eradicated many children will continue to suffer the debilitating and crippling consequences of Polio with the added risk of it spreading and or mutating. “When we are successful in eradicating polio we will have achieved one of the greatest public health victories, with polio becoming the second human disease to be eliminated from the world,”
q Salamander Bay Rotarians Megan Hayne, Lorrence Salter and Darcy Geale (President) with the working Iron Lung used to keep people alive while paralysed with Polio in the 1950’s. Photo by Marian Sampson. Please support the advertisers within the Bay News Of The Area
he said. Rotary has taken on the international task of eradicating polio worldwide and their efforts are supported financially by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Bill Gates said, “We are achingly close to getting rid of polio – more than 90 percent of the way there. “Finishing the job is a big challenge, but it is very doable if we keep up the efforts,” he said. Local Rotarians are raising funds for the eradication of polio and the Gates Foundation is doubling every donation 2 – to – 1 up to $50 million per year. Funding is needed to immunise 400 million children against polio every year. You can donate to end polio at endpolio.org. While polio cases have almost been eradicated, whooping cough is in our community and it threatens babies and those with weak immune systems. Pregnant women should be vaccinated at 28 weeks to protect their unborn baby and babies should be vaccinated at 6 weeks, 4 months and 6 months of age. You can find out more about whooping cough at www.health.nsw.gov.au/ pertussis.

Friendship Group trip to Taree Dear News Of The Area
FORTY eight members of the Port Stephens Friendship Group piled onto a coach at the depot of Port
Stephens Coaches and 2 hours later, we disembarked in Taree. Then, onto a purpose built, twin hulled boat with the quietest two outboards I have
ever encountered. We motored down the main stream, North Passage, and as we went along we were served fresh scones with tea and coffee.
I must comment on the commentary. It was very well presented, well articulated, controlled and not overbearing, but informative.
We motored right down to the beach at Old Bar before going up one of the other branches of the river (The South Passage). All this time, the team of two were cooking our baked roast lunch. After the 4 hour cruise we

Menopause The Musical By Rachael VAUGHAN
MOTHER’S Day weekend is days away, and if you haven’t planned something special for Mum, Aunty, Grandma or even the nice retired lady next door who takes your bin in, then Nelson Bay Diggers have the present that will help you out of this pickle. This Friday night, 11 May, ‘Menopause the Musical’ hits the stage at 8pm for a perfect night of belly laughing. ‘Menopause The Musical Women on Fire’ is set around four women in a department store who have nothing in
common but a black lace bra they want to buy at a lingerie sale. The female cast pokes fun of their woeful hot flushes, wrinkles, night sweats, and chocolate binges. A sisterhood is created between them, and a wonderful musical that features popular tunes from the 60s, 70s and 80s is born. This new hilarious celebration of women and ‘the change’ stars Victoria Nicolls as the Dubbo Housewife, Melanie Evans as the Professional Woman, Meg Kiddle as Earth Mother and Lilias Davie as the Soap Star.
Based on the original book and lyrics by Jeanie Linders, this new production features new songs, new dance routines and new gags in a 90-minute tour-de-force which will finish with the audience dancing with the stars or busking in the aisles. Audiences are invited to join the sisterhood and see what millions of women worldwide have been laughing about all around the world. ‘Menopause the Musical’ is the guaranteed ‘Number One Girls’ Night Out’, and most people who have seen the show say it’s impossible not to laugh.

By Marian SAMPSON THE Men Of League are back in the Bay for 26-27 May when they are holding their annual charity golf event. Meet League legend Ashley Gordon, who was the first Newcastle Knight signed and Dally M Award winner in 1990, coach of the Newcastle Indigenous All Stars and Indigenous teams along with 1975 World Cup Player John Quayle at the Men Of League Charity Golf Event. Ashley Gordon told News Of The Area, “I was still in high school when I was signed, I grew up in Newcastle and didn’t want to leave, I had my family here, so I accepted the Knights offer even though it was a new club and I had offers from Parramatta.” Gordon played with the Knights in the 1990 play offs and the league finals in 1995. “For me the early years were special, we were a close knit group and local crowds of 30,000 would attend the games.” Gordon believes in being grounded and connecting with
League Legends at Bay q Ashley Gordon.
community. When he is asked to give back through groups like Men Of League he feel that he is just being part of the League family, sharing the same values and beliefs. “I believe in recognising the cultural background and identity of who you are, it’s important that all people should recognise their culture, and being part of the League family is part of my culture,” he said. The Men Of League raise funds to support people that have been part of the League family, from those that have played and sustained injuries to those who have served in the canteen, it doesn’t matter they are helped and supported if they are in need. The Men Of League Golf Tournament will raise vital funds, you can find out more or book your team in to play in the tournament by contacting Nelson Bay Golf Club.
