Parish Priest Moonlights as Brekky DJ By Jewell DRURY WE have heard of some strange happenings over the past years, but halfway through the second decade of the new millennium, the reports just keep getting stranger. Last Wednesday morning Bay News Of the Area visited Port Stephens 100.9 FM for breakfast and had to take a second look at who the early morning Brekky DJ was. Sitting in the seat was none other than Nelson Bay’s Anglican Parish Priest Kesh Govan moonlighting as the Brekky DJ. Kesh has been Brekky DJ for the past six weeks and has brought a upbeat, vibrant start to Wednesday mornings as he shares jokes and music with his early morning listeners.

“I guess it’s not every day that the local parish priest is asked to be a presenter of a radio station,” Kesh Govan told Bay News Of The Area. “I love having the opportunity to wake people up happy, getting to pick my choice of songs and jokes to start their day,” Rev Govan said. Kesh is as “high as a kite” first thing in the morning as he bounces into his day, enthralling listeners with his funny stories, jokes and music.
His morning begins at 4 am, arriving at the studio at 5 am to prepare for his early morning breakfast show. Reverend Kesh Rico Govan took over as rector at Nelson Bay with wife, Catherine, and their four children in August 2014. The town hasn’t been the same since, with those he meets becoming infected by his natural vibrancy, enthusiasm and zest for life. Before arriving in Australia, Kesh was vicar of three churches in England.

exciting. Securing an apprenticeship at Horizons Golf Club restaurant is just the beginning. “Unstoppable” is how head chef Andrew Taylor describes Cassey. “It doesn’t matter if she is making coffee or a meal, anything she does will be the best.” “I have been cooking for 36 years and Cassey is a shining star.” Cassey, formerly of Tomaree High School, told News Of The Area, “As I had made the pledge in Year 10 to complete Year 12, I was determined to finish school.” “During the HSC, which is a very stressful time, I sought support from trusted teachers and support staff who encouraged my decisions and career choices.” Judy Rickard, Food and Beverage Director, Horizons Golf Club, said, “When Cassey topped her class in both Hospitality and Food Technology, as an employer, I knew she wanted to be a chef.” Although Cassey is only months into her first year of a three
year apprenticeship, she recently achieved third place in the Hunter TAFE Network Apprentice Chef Culinary Competition. “I walked out of the competition before the announcement, with no confidence; everyone else’s meal looked amazing,” Cassey said. Taking out a place has done so much to boost Cassey’s confidence. She now has her sights set high and intends to compete in as many competitions as she can. In the future, she hopes to enter The Brett Graham Scholarship which offers a $10,000 scholarship in London; previous recipients have gone on to become distinguished chefs. Leading the catering team for the Real Futures presentation event on 10 November, Cassey is looking forward to creating a selection of delicious canapes to accompany the fine selection of wines. Cassey would like to publicly acknowledge some special people who have helped her journey. “Thank you to Peter and Judy Rickard for the opportunity you have given me and the belief and support to become the greatest person and chef I can be, and to Mr Scott O’Hara and Year Advisor Ms Sarah Bergan of Tomaree High School, for their support.”

Boys Arrested FROM Page 1 old boys who were seen moving away from the location of the fire. Fire & Rescue NSW officers and Rural Fire Service personnel
attended and extinguished the blaze, which burnt out about an acre of bushland. Police from Port Stephens Local Area Command attended and arrested the two boys. They were taken to Nelson Bay Police Station where their
parents were contacted. Officers determined the boys had lit a campfire during a total fire ban which subsequently spread out of control, however, it is not believed they had malicious intent. The two boys will be subject
to a Youth Justice Conference under the Young Offenders Act. The incident serves as a reminder of the consequences that can result from failing to abide by fire bans.

A GROUP of local runners will head to Tateyama, Japan on a marathon exchange in January 2017 thanks to funding from Port Stephens Council and the Port Stephens Sister Cities Association. The annual exchange supports interested residents in attending the Wakashio Marathon, an event that attracts more than 9,000 participants from right around the
world. The event offers a two km family marathon, a 10 km marathon race and a full marathon. Port Stephens Deputy Mayor, Chris Doohan, said that the marathon exchange strengthened our Sister City relationship with Tateyama. “This is a great initiative that reaffirms our ongoing commitment to developing a strong
partnership with Tateyama.” “The marathon exchange has been a popular program allowing local runners to participate in an international event, while also enjoying the cultural aspects that our sister city has to offer,” Cr Doohan said. As part of the marathon exchange, residents will participate in a homestay with a local family. “The experience is an invaluable one and gives
us an opportunity to exchange information, break down cultural barriers and build friendships.” “I’m looking forward to hearing about the trip and wish our runners all the best with the marathon – thank you for being such fantastic representatives of Port Stephens,” Cr Doohan said. Boat Harbour residents Kate and Steve
Brown and Sonya and Graeme Chamberlain were successful in securing funding for the 2017 Wakashio Marathon. Council and the Port Stephens Sister Cities Association provided each participant with $300 to help cover airfares, passport costs, meals and other travel expenses.
KATE Washington MP is disgusted that residents and businesses affected by contamination emanating from the RAAF Base Williamtown are facing potential financial hardship due to inaction and uncertainty. “Residents
and businesses have done nothing wrong. They are suffering financially and hurting emotionally,” Ms Washington said. “The government response has been entirely inadequate in terms of practical assistance to the residents living within the
investigation zone.” The report confirms that properties within the investigation zone have dropped 15% in value since the contamination issue was made public. The ValuerGeneral report states, “Contamination and human
health concerns can have negative impacts to land values.” The Valuer-General concludes that “a 15% reduction would be made to most of the land values in the investigation area.” Ms Washington has called upon both levels of
government to expedite the process for local residents. “State and Federal governments must act to restore some humanity to this appalling situation. Residents need assistance to get out of there,” she said.

Finding solutions to young people’s mental health By Jewell DRURY COPSY (Caring for Port Stephens Youth) is a volunteer community group set with the task of ensuring that the best possible independent and local Youth Health/Wellbeing Service is identified and established to satisfy the needs of young people with mental health and wellbeing risk in the
Port Stephens region. Research is being undertaken to evaluate a conclusion as to the best possible accessible and independent services as a resource to advocate, facilitate and support an effective, sustainable and free mental health and wellbeing support service for young people aged 12 to 24 in Port Stephens LGA .
COPSY has commissioned a research team from the Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health – University of Newcastle to conduct a study and provide recommendations to improve support and service options related to young people’s mental health in Port Stephens. Young people, service providers, parents, carers
and anyone with an interest in youth mental health are invited to attend the workshops. This workshop seeks local community input to this study on youth mental health in the Port Stephens area. The workshop will present and seek feedback on several issues including the range of mental health issues experienced by young people living in Port Stephens, current pathways to care, barriers to support, gaps in support and service delivery.

The organisation began in Newcastle in 1995 when a group of families got together seeking to improve the lives of people in their families and the local community living with a disability “Having responsibility for the provision of care to some of the most vulnerable children in NSW is an awesome responsibility that Life Without Barriers takes on with the utmost seriousness, compassion and motivation to do all we can to provide safe, caring and nurturing environments that give these children and young people every opportunity to thrive,” Nick Hedstrom, Life Without Barriers Operations Manager, told Bay News Of The Area. “The absolute key to doing this is the foster carers, without whom we have nothing and we understand that the challenge of taking children into their home is massive and should never be underestimated,” Mr Hedstrom said. Life Without Barriers is always looking for carers
and right now the key need is for people who are willing to provide respite care. Respite Care is where a child already has a carer who they live with full-time, but for a range of reasons respite
may be needed varying in different lengths of time. The other need is for intensive care, when the children and young people who come into care have been subjected to some form

Tips and Tricks for Recycling Week DID you know the average Australian produces 647 kg of municipal waste each year? This means that highlighting the many opportunities for improvements in waste reduction and recycling has never been more important. As part of National Recycling Week, Port Stephens Council wants to help educate residents on the simple things they can do to make a difference. The theme this year ‘So you think you can recycle?’ aims to highlight the golden rules of recycling that tackle the most common recycling conventions. Council’s Waste Coordinator, Emma Penfold,
said the National Recycling Week created a great platform to further educate the community on recycling. “In Port Stephens we have an excellent record of recycling with 7316 tonnes of waste recycled in 2015/16 alone, but like anything, there’s always room for improvement.” “A key issue for us is contamination, which has been highlighted in this year’s campaign,” Ms Penfold said. Contamination refers to incorrect items being placed in recycling bins causing problems during the sorting of recyclables, as well as affecting the ability of an item to be processed into a new product.

Rules of Recycling
Eight out of ten councils surveyed by Planet Ark across metropolitan, regional and remote Australia identified reducing contamination as a high priority. Ms Penfold added that there are a few simple things people can do to avoid contamination. “It’s important to know that plastic bags can’t be recycled and that jars and bottles should have their lids removed and be rinsed before being placed in the bin.” “As part of this year’s campaign, Planet Ark has created a list of golden rules which are a great guide for effective recycling,” she said. • Stay Loose: Recycling goes into the bin loose – never in a plastic bag, and keep other soft plastic out too. • Easy does it: Simple materials like paper, cardboard, glass jars and bottles, metal cans and aerosols, cartons and rigid plastics are easy to recycle and accepted in almost all kerbside collections. • Into the Garbage: Crockery, window and drinkware glass, polystyrene, plastic bags, nappies and food are the big baddies in the recycling. • Keep It Clean-ish: Recycling does not need to be spotless – just scrape off solid food and give it a quick rinse. • Drop ‘Em Off: Kerbside systems cannot separate items like mobiles, computers, batteries and printer cartridges – find local drop off services. • If in doubt: Leave it out! Putting the wrong thing in the wrong bin can ruin your good recycling efforts.
By Jewell DRURY SOME Nelson Bay film buffs were treated to an old black and white classic, Alfred Hitchcock’s film “The Vanishing Lady”, on Saturday afternoon. The Vanishing Lady was Hitchcock’s last British film before he moved to Hollywood and starred Margaret Lockwood. Sue Winter, a Nelson Bay resident, organised the afternoon which concluded with an old fashioned afternoon tea with crockery teapots, bone china cups, saucers and plates. “My friend Doreen and I both love the old classic movies and Doreen has been a professional actress performing around the world for most of her life.” “After a bit of coaxing she agreed to display her memorabilia when we showed the old movie which delighted me greatly,” Ms Winter said. Doreen Oakshott has a huge display of memorabilia, including photo and newspaper articles, which cover the 35 years that she

I have been blessed to have performed with many big names in the theatre and they are included in my photo collection,” said Ms Oakshott. Doreen left New Zealand nine years ago and settled in Nelson Bay. She is involved socially in community life as well as in activities at her local church. “It was a great turn out on the day and it was wonderful way of remembering these old movies by allowing yourself to be re-acquainted with one of the greatest artists of cinema’s golden age whilst creating new classic memories,” Maggie Dominey, who attended the nostalgic afternoon, said. Kmart Launch Wishing Tree Appeal By Sarah STOKES KMART Salamander Bay would like to invite people to the launch of this year’s Wishing Tree Appeal. It will take place at 11am on November 16 outside the store. As Australia’s largest gift appeal, the company as a whole hopes to collect more than 500,000 gifts for Australians in need. Launched in 1987 after an Adelaide team member suggested that the company use its network of stores as collection points for gifts, it has grown into what it is today. Since then eight million gifts have been collected and distributed. All you need to do to take part in the appeal, is to

place your gift, wrapped or unwrapped, under the tree outside the store. Take a tag from the tree and write the age and gender that the gift would be suitable for. People can also make a monetary gift at any Kmart store or donate money in the collection boxes at the cash registers. The gifts are collected by The Salvation Army and Mission Australia to distribute to those in need. This year’s launch will feature entertainment by Anna Bay Public School and special guests of The Salvation Army and Centre Management. The Salvation Army and the Wishing Tree Champion from the store will be cutting the Wishing Tree Cake. Hopefully it will be another amazingly successful year with the generosity of Australians nationwide.

Claws out for Koala Care
By Mandy ELLIS
q
ALTHOUGH there has been excellent coverage on our local koalas recently, a question yet to be addressed is, how can we help? Julie Jennings of One Mile Beach, a carer with Port Stephens Koalas, has some practical advice. “Teeth and claws. It’s a trick, the koalas con you into thinking they are cute (which they are) but when you are caring for them, you must remember teeth and claws,” Ms Jennings told Bay News of the Area. Currently, there are nine koalas in care with four carers. The volunteer organisation welcomes new carers, but there is a process to go through. Carer training is

Fun and Fellowship with Probus By Jewell DRURY THE Probus Club of Port Stephens has packed a lot into the last few weeks. Perfect weather enhanced their recent barbecue which was enjoyed by members and a few visiting kookaburras who popped in to taste some of the culinary delights. The following morning, 49 ‘Probies’ set off for a week of fun and fellowship in caravans and cabins at Halliday’s Point. Leaders Kerrie and John had an action-packed program with walks, bowls, boule, horse races of the human kind, trivia and putt putt. The program also included great lunches and dinners out, a cruise,
trip to an orchid farm and the traditional “Big Aussie Breakfast” the last morning to round off a wonderful week. This yearly trek is enjoyed by all attending for the fun, fellowship and friendship element which is the Probus motto. A Melbourne Cup function was held at the Nelson Bay Bowling Club where most of the members lost their shirts. A very elegant Trish Monaghan won the Best Dressed Lady. The following day a group set off for Lemon Tree Passage where they enjoyed a walk along the foreshore bush track and boardwalk. “It was a special place to explore on a cool sunny day with one koala lifting his sleepy head to say hello,”
Anne Gibson, Secretary, told Bay News Of The Area. “We had a fabulous lunch at Lemon Tree Passage Bowling Club to finish the day on a high,” Ms Gibson said. A coach trip is planned to see David Campbell in Dream Lover in the near future . Probus organises walks and mixed bowls on a regular basis. There is something for everyone at the Probus Club of Port Stephens and much excitement is up ahead with Christmas looming. Call Pam on 4981 0273 or Ann on 0412 243 260 for further information. Couples and singles are very welcome to come along to a meeting at Nelson Bay Bowling Club on the second Thursday of the month at 9.30am. competency based and trainee carers will have hands-on experience and training, and work in conjunction with the training manual. Training often takes several months, for at least an hour in both mornings and afternoons. Not everyone is suitable. If you have a dog, for instance, that would preclude you from being a carer at home. Working is not necessarily an impediment if you are well organised. If you are fit and have a car, you may like to train as a rescuer. Like any other organisation, there are also behind the scenes roles to be attended to including administration, fundraising, leaf picking, cleaning and supporting carers at their
home. Ms Jennings stressed that being a carer is five percent cuddle time and 95 percent animal husbandry. “We must, at all times, keep the koala’s best interests first and foremost as our intention, once the koala has recovered, is to return them to the wild.” Please visit the new website www. portstephenskoalals.com. au where you can also donate, adopt a wild koala or become a member. To discuss your skills and volunteer capacity, email portstphenskoalas@ gmail.com or call Vice President, Ron Land on 0401727795. Please save the 24hour rescue number 0418 628483 for all wildlife injuries.
Day memorial service to be held at Apex Park, Nelson Bay, to commence at 10.45am. Those participating in the service are requested to be there by 10.30am.
St Philips Christian College pupils will be taking part in this year’s service. A light lunch will follow at Wests Nelson Bay Diggers for members of the service. A local knitting group has been busy making poppies and these will be laid out on the lawn outside the club.

Tastes At The Bay is on the calendar By Mandy ELLIS IT was perfect weather for a perfect weekend at Tastes At The Bay. From early diners listening to the sound of Michael Bublé on the marina, to kids having their faces painted, cooking demonstrations, wine tasting and pie eating competitions, there were plenty of attractions to keep the crowds happy. Peter Clough, Event Coordinator, told News Of The Area, “This is the first year we have run a cruise with a live band on board. The tickets were sold out two weeks prior to the event.” “The success has been way beyond our expectations, and our new approach to utilise the three sites has been a great decision.” Guest celebrity chef Jade Phao-Chinda of Sydney was showcasing her talents on Saturday and said, “Lots of people were asking me
for my recipes after the demonstrations. This makes me feel welcome here.” The Town Crier was heard calling around the festivities and was photographed and enjoyed by many. Kids and adults kept the balloon man busy creating balloon animals and swords. Jazz singers on the marina entertained diners and visitors throughout the weekend. Tourists from England, Richard and Eunice Budd, described the atmosphere as, “Strong community and village like.” Toby Kuchta of Sydney won the pie eating competition and took home four bottles of wine. Jan Stone of Port Stephens FM said, “I am enjoying the Tastes At The Bay. We are playing great music and the atmosphere is terrific.” The winner of the draw, for the Taronga Zoo family pass courtesy of Bay News Of The Area, is Laice Moses.
