Unexpected, But Exciting Move By Mandy ELLIS UNABLE to renew the lease on their café in Queensland, Guy and Kylie Nicolls decided to take a break and consider their options. A decision was made to take a short holiday and head South rather than their usual destination further North and would utilise a Groupon voucher for Bay Breeze Holiday Apartments, Nelson Bay. Whilst making the booking, Kylie shared their situation with Les Merrett, Manager, who advised that he was looking for someone to take over the café within the holiday

Anna Bay resident Sandra Ferguson said the weed dumps started around 20 December 2016, with a thick carpet of weed covering the area on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day and fresh dumps into the second week of January. “If it is a natural occurrence, why is it not covering the whole beach?” Mrs Ferguson said. There have also been reports of a maggot infestation in the weed. Local resident Casey Ballard said she dived into the water and felt something crawling on her skin. Her mother, Jenn Ballard, picked up some of the weed and it “started wriggling” in her hands. Rumours of a trawler being responsible for the debris are still circulating, but to date there has been no substantiation of trawler

75th Anniversary of Fort Tomaree By Jewell DRURY THIS year commemorates the 75th Anniversary. On 19 February 1942, 188 Japanese planes were launched against Darwin, whose harbour was full of Allied ships. It was the largest Japanese attack since Pearl Harbour, 7 December 1941. June 1942 saw Tomaree Mountain turned into a massive fort. Its role was to stop a potential Japanese landing force trying to take the Tomaree sandhills, the Newcastle Steel Works and the Hunter Coal Mines. Regular walkers may be aware of the history from the storyboards placed on the mountain of Fort Tomaree, but few would be aware of the many hidden treasures off the popular walking tracks. Shane Goodwin is a passionate war history enthusiast and knows Tomaree Mountain and its history like the back of his hand. Mr Goodwin takes guided tours through the mountain, recounting stories and

pointing out many World War II remnants that would normally go unnoticed, including a machine gun pit that is covered with natural vegetation. Bay News Of The Area was invited to trek with Shane Goodwin on the original 1942 Patrol Paths. 500 Servicemen manned the mountain in 1942 and Mr Goodwin has spent thousands of hours examining wartime maps, researching and documenting the area with GPS markings to identify every significant site. “This area was also used as a training facility for more that 20,000 allied troops to practice landing strategies,” Mr Goodwin told Bay News Of The Area. Yacaaba Head opposite Tomaree was set up as a decoy fort and included a Gun Emplacement made out of wood, while camouflage netting was used to make Fort Tomaree look like a fishing village in the hopes of confusing the Japanese. Hidden off the main track and virtually unseen is the battery plotting room which also doubled up as an observation post and controlled

MAN’S best friend or a neighbour’s worst nightmare? The answer can often depend if there is a dog in the vicinity who barks incessantly. In changing the Legislative Act that dog noise is categorised, the draft policy recommends that only one barking dog diary is required, rather than the current three which has proved to be onerous for residents claiming to be impacted by the noise. The one diary requirement will, from the Council’s perspective, enable Rangers to act quicker and decisively about issues.

NPWS fees to grow and then to lobby council and the NPWS to use those park fees to refurbish and maintain the area so it will remain for future generations. You can contact Shane Goodwin at Escape Trekking Adventures.

If your dog is a barker, there are strategies you can take as a responsible owner, to discourage your hound from barking and disturbing the peace for surrounding residents. The RSPCA has a list of recommendations to assist owners to curb their dog’s barking. Consulting with your local Vet is a good starting place, as they are likely to know you and your dog. The RSPCA suggests that training should be based on a reward, rather than punishment, system. Using this method, dogs are rewarded for good behaviour and unwanted

behaviour is largely ignored. Long term resident, Barb Winkleman, has had enough of her neighbour’s bad behaviour, telling News Of The Area, “We have two small dogs inside that will bark if tormented and our neighbour purposely bangs the lid against the tin fence to torment our dogs.” “I informed Council that I will not pay any noise complaint fine because our dogs are tormented.” Of course, the fact remains, that a policy is only as good as its enforcement. Local residents impacted by incessantly barking dogs will have to see whether or not Rangers can, or will, enforce the policy through issuing a noise abatement order as written in the draft policy.

OWNING a new pet is even more meaningful when it involves saving a life. President of Hunter Animal Rescue Caroline Hawkless said their main mission is “giving vulnerable animals a second chance to find a loving forever home”. Hunter Animal Rescue saves the lives of companion animals left abandoned or unclaimed in local pounds, by providing temporary homes and rehabilitation, and re-homing animals. The organisation brought approximately 400 animals into care in 2016. It is easy to fall for a cute puppy or kitten, but

responsible ownership involves considering “the total life cycle of the pet,” Ms Hawkless said. Potential owners should “think in advance” and consider factors including children growing up and losing interest, home and yard security, quality care, and financial considerations. “Seeing the feedback from families that have adopted our foster animals and the obvious joy and enrichment all have gained as a result is the most rewarding part of the role,” Ms Hawkless said. But there are significant challenges including “realising that friendly and excitable large dogs and purring, head-butting, sweet adult cats are not as popular as puppies and kittens and stay in foster care a lot longer,” Ms Hawkless told

Nikki Shilling with rescue dog Myah. Shilling with her decision to adopt. The choice was even easier when a dog at Rutherford RSPCA made the selection for her. “Myah didn’t bark and she went running up to [my son] Oli and licked him through the big pen. We hung out with her for a while and played and it felt like she chose us, which was the idea,” Nikki said. For Nikki, pets are a life-

long commitment and there are important questions to ask before taking the plunge. “I’ve had neighbours before who had a Kelpie pup chained up most of the day alone while they were at work. That’s not fair,” Nikki said. Information on pet adoption can be found at www.hunteranimalrescue. com.au or www.adoptapet. com.au.

News Of The Area. Ms Hawkless said there were several ways people could assist Hunter Animal Rescue. “Foster – if you can’t foster – volunteer – if you can’t volunteer – donate – if you can’t donate – share our story with friends and family who may be able to.” The prospect of sidestepping the sometimes challenging puppy stage helped local resident Nikki

GODBOLD is a frontman with a chameleon-like voice. He was at the Fingal Bay Sport Club Wednesday 11 January from 6.00 to 9.00 pm. He can play it straight, crooning Save The Last Dance For Me by Michael Buble or All Night Long by Lionel Richie. But just when you think you have him pegged, Godbold will mix things up,

tweaking lyrics for comic effect, introducing a rogue guest voice into a song, or highlighting musical anomalies. What starts out as a version of Sweet Home Alabama (Lynyrd Skynyrd) morphs into All Summer Long (Kid Rock) then Werewolves of London (Warren Zevon). If he feels a reggae-like riff in a song, Godbold will

channel the voice of Shaggy and play with that. And cover versions of hits by female artists hold no fears for Godbold. His rendition of Man! I Feel Like A Woman (Shania Twain) is evidence of that. Hats, glasses and props add to the fun. Visit andrewgodbold. com for more information.

Don’t Drown in Distractions By Jo FINN A COMBINATION of the holiday season, extreme heat and alcohol has created the perfect storm for drowning deaths in NSW. Although any person of any age can drown, the statistics for males are sobering. According to the 2016 National Drowning Report by the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia (RLSSA), 83% of the 280 people who drowned in the 2015-16 financial year were males. Port Stephens is paradise for water enthusiasts, but Hunter Regional Manager of Royal Life Saving NSW Tanya Brunckhorst urged men to seriously consider their safety at all times and the decisions they make in relation to boating, fishing and swimming. “We see higher levels of alcohol consumed and basically a disregard for safety equipment such as life jackets. In some cases men are ignoring weather warnings and venturing out into rough conditions,” Ms Brunckhorst said. The highest risk group is males between 25 and 34, but under fives drowning in pools is also a huge concern. “Drowning is silent and happens very quickly. Everyday distractions such as going inside to turn off the oven can lead to irreversible tragedies,” she said. “Last summer 14 children lost their lives to drowning in backyard pools.” Tomaree Aquatic Centre is a partner pool with the Royal Life Saving Society and conducts the RLSSA Water Smart Program. The next program runs from 16-20 January

and includes a 30-minute swimming and water safety lesson for five consecutive days. In partnership with RLSSA, Tomaree Aquatic Centre also operates the Keep Watch program. Centre Manager Suellen Goyne stressed the importance of parents staying within an arm’s reach of children under five. “Lifeguards aren’t babysitters,” Ms Goyne said. “The mobile phone culture is an issue; parents get distracted.” For under fives and non-swimmers, a parent or guardian needs to be in the water at all times and within an arm’s reach of the child. The pool issues yellow wristbands for under fives and orange wristbands for non-swimmers, which act as an alert and reminder to parents and guardians, as well as pool lifeguards. WATER SAFETY TIPS

Keep Watch Program Advice: • 0-5 year-olds and non swimmers: Parent or guardian needs to be in the water at all times and within an arm’s reach • 6-10 year-olds: Constant active supervision. Parents and carers must be prepared to enter the water with this age group • 11-14 year-olds: It is recommended that parents regularly check their child by physically going to where they are in or around the water Children: • Restrict access to water e.g. if you have a backyard pool, make sure it is compliant • Supervise young

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis.Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb.

Dear Jasminda,

My mother removes the stems from vine-ripened tomatoes so they pass as common ones and cost less. Is this wrong? Ms VJ, Bulahdelah I don’t know, VJ. It depends if you think paying for one DVD and shoving the other one up your jumper is wrong. Or if you think shaking the plastic guide dog Labrador until it coughs up some loose change is immoral. Look, I’ll admit when you have to use the self-serve stations at the supermarket, it is tempting to weigh your gourmet asparagus as brushed potatoes. It’s understandable, when they keep running ‘buy two when you only want one’ deals, that you want to engage in some payback. But you must stop your mother from travelling down the slippery slope of criminality. I mean it might start as a simple tomato vine extraction, but things can go terribly wrong. Soon she’ll be hanging with the wrong crowd in aisle three, doing strange things with protein powder and couscous. Next she’ll be loitering with the weird frozen goods crew. You know, the ones with frost-bitten hands and icy stares. You’ve got to call her out, VJ. You can wean her with the ‘free fruit for annoying kids’ if you like, or else go cold turkey. In fact grab a cold turkey, knock her out and take her 12 items to the express aisle where there’s no temptation, oh, apart from the chocolates, the cigarettes and the chewing gum. Okay, I give up. Just order takeaway.

THE Community Wellbeing Program planned another event to ‘step outside the zone’ this week, with a free local Art class. Held on Friday in the Youth Hall at the Port Stephens Church of Christ, the class was open to all ages from seven upwards. The church donated the venue for the occasion. Hosted by local artist June Orr, all materials were provided including snacks

and a cuppa. Sunsets, watercolours and a free expression table were all set up to encourage all ages to feel comfortable. June told News Of The Area, “I have been following the Community Wellbeing program on social media for some time and they are trying so hard to bring some relief to the situation, so to be asked to be a part of that was amazing.” “To see the kids smile and laugh as they almost stepped into their sunsets was just

magical.” “I enjoyed it so much I am happy to help again with another class later in the year,” Ms Orr said. The Community Wellbeing program has door knocked, letter box dropped and used social media to engage with the community and plan events that appeal to all ages. So far the community has successfully planned a morning relaxation class and community cuppa with attached creche, an evening

yoga class, two movie nights, and a family beach day. They have received confirmation to run another term of the community cuppa, relaxation class and yoga class to begin within the next few weeks. Julie Bailey, one of the events key community planners said, “The art class was another great community event, full of smiles, laughter and creativity.” “We welcome everyone to come along and enjoy the events being offered and are always happy to welcome people who would like to take an active role in helping pull the activities together.”

Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Bay Blueberries By Jewell DRURY BLUEBERRIES have a wonderful combination of tastiness and nutritional benefits. They are low in calories and have a high antioxidant content, enabling them to scavenge radicals that might otherwise damage the body. Here in Port Stephens we have our very own Organic Blueberry Farm at Bobs Farm Berries, just past Murray’s Brewery. David and Tracey Pass have lived in Port Stephens for more than 29 years and on their Bobs Farm property for the last 16 years. David, a qualified local builder, and Tracey, a midwife at Maitland Hospital, have three adult children, Jennifer, Jonathan and Jessie.

Both David and Tracey decided to begin farming Blueberries after they heard a roadside blueberry farmer tell them that even though he sold his produce to the locals he would never let his children eat them. The comment motivated the Pass family to grow blueberries that were completely chemical-free for their own consumption and, in turn, others. They found that the position of their farm in the sandhills of Bobs Farm gave them the ideal conditions for the blueberries. “Sandy soil is great as it is free draining; we have plenty of groundwater and the temperature is perfect,” David Pass told Bay News Of The Area. What is in the fridge to sell is no more than three days old, so that means a greater shelf life in your fridge at home. Mr Pass guarantees “Fresh from the Bush to your hand in three days”. “There is no need to wash the blueberries as they are picked with a lot of love and with the cleanest of hands,” Mr Pass told Bay News Of The Area. “This year has been a dry year which has been good for picking the berries and just enough rain to fatten the berries up,” he said. During the Christmas and New Year period it is not unusual for the Berry Farm to turn over 80-100

kilograms of Blueberries per week. Opening hours are Wednesdays 9 - 1pm and Friday afternoon from 26pm unless they sell out early.

The store is full of Fair Trade Products that have been sourced from individuals, families and villages that make them by hand. “Whether supporting women in a local refuge to rebuild their lives, to empowering women in Fijian prisons to earn enough income to keep their children in school or providing food and accommodation for widows and orphans in Bali and the Phillipines or helping to resource local tribes in Tanzania, all of our products are directly helping to empower those who need it most,” Elly Webb from Spectrum Gift Shop told Bay News Of The Area. “We have a wonderful team of volunteers who run our gift shop who are all passionate about what we are doing here,” Ms Webb said.

The heart of what Spectrum Gifts does is to help people to help themselves. There are people on the mission fields, nursing and teaching in many third world locations. Spectrum gives these missionaries opportunities to make connections with people in these regions by facilitating purchases of high quality goods that are bought and sold through the gift shop. This then helps the individuals and communities by increasing trade and creating a flow of money to put back into their villages. Spectrum Gift Shop is an extension of C3 Spectrum Church, whose vision is to serve the community through a relationship of trust. The church’s goal is to tear down the walls and bring church to the people a kind of realness to the community. The church’s Farmers Market is another example of the church coming to the people as a part of a supportive community.

River Diesel Leak The leak has been traced back to small break in a fuel line at the Port Stephens Council Works Depot.

By Jo FINN THE NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is investigating a series of hydrocarbon discharges into the Hunter River at Raymond Terrace. A spokesperson from the EPA told News Of The Area that the leak has been traced back to small break in a fuel line at the Port Stephens Council Works Depot. Port Stephens Council was first made aware of the diesel leak on 15 December 2016 via a call to the Environmental Line from a concerned community member. Acting Port Stephens Council general manager Mike McIntosh said that as soon as Port Stephens Council was notified of the spill, they contacted the EPA and have been working closely with them ever since. Port Stephens Council was served a Clean Up Notice which outlined a series of control measures including ensuring no hydrocarbons left the premises via stormwater discharges and engaging a petro chemical specialist

Remediation measures included “pumping all potentially contaminated stormwater into storage tankers on site and disposing at a licensed waste facility,” Mr McIntosh said. Following the initial spill, a power overload resulted in a second incident. “Early on the morning of 2 January, a power overload on site caused our pumps to fail, which exacerbated the situation,” Mr McIntosh said. “The EPA attended the site and directed Port Stephens

Council to install extra booms to manage the risk of any further discharges to the River,” an EPA spokesperson said. “We also noted that the majority of the hydrocarbon was contained in the stormwater system and the sheen had reduced in size.” Residents in the vicinity of the leak have been contacted by Port Stephens Council. “We letterboxed all residents in the vicinity of Boomerang Park on 23 December outlining what had occurred and have subsequently held a number of individual conversations with community members,” Mr McIntosh said. “We then doorknocked and letterboxed local residents again on 6 January and we'll correspond with them again once we have any new information to hand,” he said. Mr McIntosh encouraged residents with any concerns or information to contact Port Stephens Council. Initial contact can be made via the customer service line on (02) 4980 0255.

Wildlife, Water and Fun THE blue water holiday centre of Port Stephens is renowned for its beautiful bays such as Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay and Salamander Bay. And now Port Stephens boasts a new bay – Splash Bay – a water park attraction that officially opened at Oakvale Farm and Fauna World on 7 January.. Opening in time for summer crowds to Port Stephens to enjoy its eight water play features, Splash Bay is one of Oakvale Farm and Fauna World’s biggest new attractions in its 37year history as one of the area’s most popular family attractions. The year-round Splash Bay water park – free for all park visitors to use – offers interactive water features inspired by the wildlife park’s fauna including a crocodile bucket dunker, a python spray tunnel and a koala water cannon as well as eight new electric barbecues and undercover seating for up to 250 people – ideal for lunches, birthday parties and

little kids and ‘big kids’ all invited to cool down in the water park while visiting Oakvale’s 250 species of animals including pythons,

And the winner is By Mandy ELLIS BRIAN Ingram of Salamander Bay didn’t believe it at first when he received a call from McCauley’s Bottle shop, Salamander Bay, telling him he had won a ‘tinnie’ and trailer. “I’m over the moon, stoked, this is great for the kids to grow up with and then heading into teenage years they’ll be able to take it out themselves,” Brian told News Of The Area. “Thank you for the opportunity to win, and, of course, I will continue to support McCauley’s Bottle Shop.” Jai Pyke, Licensee, approached a passer-by to pull out the winning ticket. Graham Fryer of Salamander Bay was more than happy to dig deep into the huge barrel of tickets. Jai said, “It took four

hours, with three staff, to scrunch all of the tickets, and I am extremely proud with the staff and their efforts to bring this together.” “I would also like to thank Joe and Jonine McCauley for running the sausage sizzle today, they have done an exceptional job. “The turnout and support this morning is amazing, and it’s good to see people enjoying the free sausage sizzle.” Owner John McCauley said, “The reason for this event is to thank the locals for their year-round support; of course, we appreciate the support during the tourist season, however, it is the locals who continue to support us throughout the year.” “I am very pleased with the staff who work well as a team and it has been a great effort from them to pull this

Skydive for Cancer... FROM Page 16 “When someone dies, it’s like your hands are tied and it feels like there is nothing you can do for the people you love,” Nicola Beadle told Bay News Of The Area. Nicola, Lewis and the extended family were coming to Australia in December and decided to organise a skydive as a fundraiser. All funds raised would go to the PSWCSG to help them pursue Sarah’s dream.

Nicola, a nurse in the UK , originally started the campaign through ‘Just Giving’, an online crowd fundraising website, with a goal of 600 British Pounds which is equivalent to $1012 Australian dollars. The end result saw an amazing 2,910 British Pounds raised which gave the PSWCSG a massive $4908.22 in Australian dollars. Beadle, and Albany Litten all made the successful skydive. “Mum was so positive about everything and always believed that there was a reason that things happened,” Albany Litten told Bay News Of The Area. “Our Mum was very spiritual, she believed that all things lined up for a greater purpose, she was amazing,” Kempsey Litten said. “She believed in the power of the journey, and thought that she was going to get well and write a book and always believed she would

see her vision of a ‘wellness centre’ become a reality,” Albany added. Sarah Litten has left behind a beautiful legacy of tangible love. A love that can be felt as her story is repeated by her family and those whose lives she impacted. A cheque for 2910 pounds was presented on Wednesday afternoon to Rhondda Shaw, Secretary of the PSWCSG. You can read more of The Sarah Litten story in an upcoming edition of Bay News Of The Area.

SARAH Litten was well known on the Tomaree Peninsula and founded the Port Stephens Women’s Cancer Support Group. Sarah’s dream was to establish a wellness centre in Port Stephens for women battling cancer. Six years ago Sarah was first diagnosed with cancer and recovered, only to find that it reappeared again in 2015. On August 28, 2016 Anna Bay resident Sarah Litten, wife of Andy and mother to Kempsey, Albany, Brooklyn and Eden Litten, lost her battle with cancer. Days after Sarah’s passing, her nephew Lewis and his girlfriend Nicola in the UK were grieving and felt unable to help the family from the other side of the world.
