THE Easter spirit was in full swing at Anna Bay Public School for their annual Easter Hat Parade. Mr Brett Woolfe said the hats were โall egg-cellentโ as the children paraded in front of an admiring audience of parents, friends, grandparents and caregivers. Some audience members would have been relieved that โbuddiesโ assisted their children with the daunting task of creating an Easter hat masterpiece. The students did a great job with hats adorned with Easter eggs, feathers, fluffy chickens, bunny ears and glitter. โYear 6 buddies have been helping the kindergarten kids to produce Easter hats and bonnets for their Easter Parade,โ Mr Woolfe said. Each class did a lap of the assembly hall and then posed for photos. CONTINUED Page 2

ONLY an elite few can boast being in business for 200 years. Westpac Banking Corporation is one such business. Formed in 1817, it was known initially as Australiaโs First Bank and was opened in Sydney and founded by Governor Macquarie. The bank was later renamed Bank of NSW and then, in 1982, was named Westpac Banking Corporation. The Bank celebrated its bicentennial year on 8 April; they are already planning on innovative ways to continue to serve the community for a further 200. โIt is an honour to work for such a well established and respected organisation and we are always looking at ways in which we can best support our loyal customers,โ Jason Russell, Bank Manager of the Nelson Bay branch said. โThe high number of parents taking up our current saving initiative and opening an account under the Bump* offer is very encouraging.โ
q Allan Rowe, (sitting), 41 years service, his first job was filling up ink wells and keeping quills sharp. Image supplied. A cocktail party was held at the branch for all past and present bank managers, and between the 30 people in attendance, it was calculated there was a total of 456 years between them. One such attendee recalled that if you were a male employee in the early days and wished to get married, you had to obtain
permission from the Bank and bank managers were issued with pistols, taken to gun ranges for target practice and how to use the weapon, however, at the end of the day, the gun had to be placed securely in the safe. The branch celebrated with customers the following day by sharing food, drinks, lollies

q Sean Walker with Rachael Corrigan of Hunter Connect. Photo by Sarah Stokes By Sarah STOKES PORT Stephens man Sean Walker was diagnosed with autism at the age of 41. At a talk last week hosted by Hunter Connect, a local
charity working with families experiencing autism, he sat and spoke about his life before his diagnosis. Sean didnโt look up and seemed uncomfortable, but this was in complete contrast to
speaking with him afterwards, where he was animated and friendly. Sean said that his life before diagnosis had been marked by difficulty in social situations, lack of organisational skills; having shutdowns, a very strong sense of justice, voice control, depression and anxiety, being gullible and naive, intense feelings and being too honest. He has had many failed relationships, been estranged from his children, been in fights, arrested, been an alcoholic and suicidal on many occasions. Sean was diagnosed following his son after a friend suggested he may also be on the spectrum. His whole life then made sense but he had to re-evaluate it in light of this, with feelings of grief and frustration leading to final acceptance. The father of three, stepfather of two, grandfather of one and now happily married to his wife, Lisa, also runs a successful business.

and balloons which were well received by the local community. Jason told News Of The Area, โThe Bank has come a long way in 200 years. It will be interesting to see where the next 200 takes us.โ *More information on the Bump offer can be found at your local branch and online.
Sean is a different man these days. He lists his positive attributes, which are common to many autistic people, as analytical, a seeker of the truth, thinking in pictures, an affinity with animals, loyal, says what he means, and has no hidden agendas and is not materialistic. Sean has an IQ of 136, has won scholarships to university and has a talent for mathematics. Sean told News Of The Area, โI think, although difficult, it is important for articulate autistic adults to talk about autism, so that those autistics who are not articulate or can not express themselves are understood, especially by those close to them.โ Sean stresses that autism is a genetic neurological difference and not an intellectual or learning disability. He uses the example of an iPhone and a Samsung: itโs a different operating system, borne out by FMRI brain scans. Sean says that autism is not an add-on, it is part of him.

Prospective Councillors Ready To Represent
By Rachael VAUGHAN
PORT Stephens. Itโs time. This is the message that prospective Central Ward councillors, Mr Patrick Byron and Ms Jenny Battrick, want you to remember. Both long-term locals, they are running as a team in Central Ward to make a difference for Port Stephens residents. The two candidates are committed to community involvement having both been Wirreanda P&C Presidents and involved in the local Soccer club. Mr Byron is on the community pre-school committee, Medowie Sports Council, and was elected as

The week-long event involved an interview portion, photos shoots, swimwear judging, fashion wear parade, evening parade, rehearsals and Eco party. Emilie shared her excitement with News Of The Area saying, โI had the best week at the competition with my family all there for support, including my two little girls.โ โIโve been trying to describe the week to
everybody and I say to them, as a mum you really lose yourself in the role, so this pageant journey has really brought me out my shell.โ โI seriously had the best time, it was so much fun, even more than I could possibly have imagined,โ Mrs Hardes said. Emilieโs husband was especially proud her, and was reportedly ecstatic to hear she had won. โHeโs so proud of me for having the guts to getting into swimmers after having two kids and being judged and all,โ Mrs Hardes said. The coupleโs girls are aged nine months and three years respectively. Mrs Hardes was also joined by other Port Stephens
WITH the snap of a stay during the closing scenes of the Seabreeze Super 12 NSW Championship fleet at Sail Port Stephens 2017 yesterday, the fortunes of the two diminutive frontrunners changed dramatically. The Melges 32 Breezin, owned by Brad Sewell from southern Lake Macquarie, had begun the final day with a one-point advantage over local Port Stephens entry Rumbo, Guy and Clark
Holbertโs modified Mumm 30. Rumbo won the peltimate race to make life even more interesting. Then misfortune struck for Sewellโs crew: โThe D2 just snapped โฆ I think the cockroaches mustโve gotten into it,โ Sewell said wryly. โWeโre lucky the mast didnโt come down actually.โ With Rumbo placing 7th in the last race, Breezinโs DNF reversed the overall

Mrs Shakaia Tickle, a resident of Salamander Bay, won a wildcard entry into the Miss Galaxy final, and Emilieโs sister Miss Gabbi Guihot also took part in the Miss Teen Galaxy section as a finalist. In her new role as Mrs Galaxy Australia 2017, Mrs Hardes will now attend the international competition to be held in Florida in June. Emilie will again be joined by her cheer squad family. Between now and then, Emilie has big plans for fundraisers, saying โIโm hoping to run a fundraiser in late May or early June.โ โI will be seeking auction items for a charity auction at this event.โ โIf any members of the public are willing to donate please contact me via my Facebook page,โ she said.
for longevity, with both short and long term goals past that initial four year term.โ Mr Byron told News Of The Area, โThe community need people elected to be able to relate to, we are family and community minded people.โ โThere is no room for politics in local government.โ โWe want people to be able to engage and approach us on a personal basis, not just a โlikeโ on a post on social media.โ Both aim for their campaign to be about respect. championship result by a solitary point. Looking back, it was a difference of 8 seconds on corrected time after Saturdayโs 3-hour passage race to Broughton Island that also proved telling. It showed just how effective the Super 12sโ PHRF system is โ in fact, barely four minutes separated the fleet on corrected time in most races. Sewell, a nine-year Sail Port Stephens stalwart, has previously collected a Commodores Cup trophy in 2008 and a Performance Racing gong last year, so he quickly cast off any disappointment. โItโs been great sailing in this Super 12 fleet because the handicap system gives the little boats a chance, particularly in light airs,โ Sewell added. โThe Broughton Island race on Saturday is just a lovely event โ we had a kite run all the way back, hitting 11-12 knots, and we had another Melges 32 in the fleet sitting on our hip the whole

News Of The Area will introduce all prospective Mayoral and Councillor candidates over the coming months, so that readers can make an informed decision at the September 9 Council elections.
time.โ For the Holberts, who won a NSW IRC title at Sail Port Stephens six years ago with the same boat, itโs reward for heavily modifying their vintage Mumm 30 with a wider transom, fuller bow sections and prodder. โWe knew we could never afford a TP52 but we wanted this boat to look like a mini version,โ Guy Holbert said. โThis series was a great chance for us to compete against the best sailors and it was amazing to scrape in by one point. โAs fifth generation oyster farmers I guess we know the tides pretty well around here but overall we sailed pretty well and stayed motivated.โ With Rumbo now packed away for the season, the boys were back on board their oyster barges at 6am today, tending their racks in a wintry 30-knot westerly. Third overall was the Melges 32 Mac 2, skippered by Andrew McDougall from Gosford Sailing Club. Adrian
Waltersโ Shaw 11 Little Nico won the lionโs share of line honours while the two Farr 400s Ignition and Vento were never far away. In the Australian Sport Boat Association national titles sailed on Salamander Bay, Sydneyโs Andrew York iced the cake that heโd largely baked on the Saturday by posting another two race wins out of the three sailed yesterday. Victory on the modified VX1 Reo Speedwagon was even sweeter after a disappointing conclusion to last yearโs nationals: โWe thought weโd won the title last year as well but a rating issue pushed us back to third place,โ York said. โI designed and built this boat to the sport boat rule and Iโm really happy with how it went. It looks a little under-rigged with a short boom but we have a good power-to-weight ratio and can be fully powered up and efficient in up to 15 knots. Weโre really competitive upwind and still light enough to go well downwind.

THE winners of the 12-15 years Short Film Category for the PS24 Creative Challenge were champions in more ways than one when they donated their prize money equally between two very worthy local organisations. The 24-hour challenge, organised by Port Stephens Council and its Youth Advisory Panel, invited young people in the Port Stephens area to unleash their creative sides by producing a short story, poem, photograph, illustration, song or short film within a 24-hour time limit. This yearโs theme, released at the start of the 24hour timeframe, was: โWho is your champion in the Port
Stephens community?โ A champion could be interpreted as a person, a group, a team or even a place. The 12-15 years Short Film Category winners call themselves the โSuns Up Crewโ. Local friends for many years, Mason Aurino, Beau Bramble, Taine Bramble, Jaiden Cavanagh, Hayden Davey and Tom Glenn also entered the competition last year. Champions to the end, their generous donation of $100 was given to the Suicide Prevention Network and Port Stephens Koalas. The โchampionsโ in their short film were Dave Sams from the Suicide Prevention Network and Simone Aurino
from Port Stephens Koalas. Group participant Beau Bramble told News Of The Area, โIt was hard with the weather during the 24-hour Challenge, but easy to find everyday heroes locally in Anna Bay and Boat Harbour like Dave and Simone.โ โThey are absolute champions for the causes they represent and the youth of today appreciate and recognise their efforts through this Port Stephens Council 24 Creative Challenge initiative.โ Beau encouraged other local kids to unleash their creative talents for next yearโs competition. โI hope to see more kids out there for the challenge next year, whatever the weather,โ he said.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
I bought a $1000 Dalmatian a year ago and he was an attentive puppy, but now he is fully grown, he has been spending more time at the neighbourโs house than mine. Yesterday I found him on her balcony and he acted as though he didnโt even know who I was. I donโt know what to do. The neighbour isnโt helping matters. She just says he seems happier with her. Mr JM, Tea Gardens Dear Mr JM, I fear that your dear neighbour (I am picturing an elderly lady with a delicate cardigan and sensible shoes) is actually a sinister captor. She has been grooming Darrel the Dalmatian with pig ears and liver bites and bowls of cream since he was a pup. The minute you turn your head, she tempts him to cross over to the dark side. She is the one who showed him the hole in the camellia bush that is now an escape tunnel. She also taught him to bark incessantly whenever you try to watch the tennis. Now the poor dog is a hostage and, worse, he has formed a damaging psychological attachment to the woman, that menacing wolf in sheepโs clothing and orthopaedic shoes. Poor Darrel has Stockholm Syndrome and I fear that your only solution is to kidnap him back and then take him on a long drive to Byron Bay. The two of you can book into some therapy and doggie yoga (which they are sure to have in Byron). Iโm guessing if you can afford a $1000 pet, youโre not short of a quid. Let me know how it goes, BM. Iโm here for you. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

THE Lower Hunter Draft Bush Fire Risk Management Plan is now on exhibition. โThis is an important document that aims to protect our community and assets,โ Glenn Wall, Chairperson of the Lower Hunter BFMC said. โEveryone should take the opportunity to have a look at the plan to ensure that their views are addressed.โ Your comments are invited on the Lower Hunter Draft Bush Fire Risk Management Plan, now on public exhibition

The litter of pups were surrendered along with their mother to a local pound. Through tireless efforts, the pups are now happy, healthy and have all had their first vaccines and been medically cleared for adoption. THIS July, Dr Ilona Hudson will be the only equestrian athlete to represent Australia in dressage at the Maccabiah Games in Israel. The Maccabiah Games, often referred to as the Jewish Olympics, draws together 9,000 athletes from 78 countries. The first games was held in 1932, and take place quadrennially in Israel. their lives. Dr Hudson is competing in the games following her participation in the dressage competition at the European Maccabi Games in Berlin, 2015. News Of The Area last year reported on her experiences competing in that event. There will be sixty equestrian athletes at these games. The competition structure is such that the athletes are loaned a horse, as many of the participating athletes are unable to travel with their own horses due to animal quarantine laws. Dr Hudson told News Of The Area, โThe name of the horse you get to ride is drawn from a barrel the day before the competition and each athlete is given 30 minutes to ride the horse.โ โThis is an amazing opportunity for me, and I have been fortunate to get some assistance from within the veterinary profession to make this experience a reality.โ Dr Hudson is seeking assistance, which is tax deductible, via the Australian Sports Foundation. Collaboration of volunteers
By Mandy ELLIS
MARINE Rescue Port Stephens (MRPS) and Port Stephens FM 100.9 (PSFM) are working collaboratively in an effort to increase boating safety by coming together to provide a community service. Following a request from Bob McKay, Vice President of PSFM, MRPS is supplying a Bureau of Meteorology marine weather forecast for the Hunter Coast with a โLive Crossโ to PSFM at 6.40am, Monday to Friday, with the intention of including a weekend live cross in the near future. The broadcast also includes local weather observations and tide information from the MRPS radio base at Nelson Head. In addition to the live cross, weather reports are available on request from Marine Rescue 24 hours per day on Marine Radio, VHF Channel 16 or 27Meg Channel 88, or alternatively by phone 4981 3585. Current weather observations are also available on the MRPS website, www. marinerescueportstephens. com.au. Colin Foote, Communications Centre Manager, reminds all boat skippers to contact Marine Rescue to Log On and advise their destination and return time, before they leave the boat ramp. โWith over 70% of all rescues taking place in the Bay, rather than in open waters outside the Heads, everyone should take the time to either call Marine Rescue
NewsOfTheArea.com.au
or use the Marine Rescue Mobile App to Log On,โ Colin Foote told News Of The Area. Bob McKay said, โWe are very pleased to be involved with Marine Rescue, and to support our community with the daily live cross and look forward to it being a seven day a week broadcast, especially during the holiday season when many get to enjoy the beautiful water we have here.โ
MRPS has had a significant number of enquiries for volunteers and have a few places available. Full training and support is given to ensure volunteers can carry out their role safely and effectively. More information on volunteering can be obtained from Lee Uebergang, Unit Commander on 0428 813 585 or email: uc.portstephens@ marinerescuensw.com.au.
