Tomaree Lodge Residents to Find New Homes

q Homes4Life CEO Charles Northcote, The Hon Taylor Martin MLC and Lake Macquarie Councillor Jason Pauling turn the first sod on Hunter Residences Redevelopment.

RESIDENTS of Tomaree Lodge and their families are finally seeing a future after years of uncertainty.

The redevelopment of the Hunter residences has moved from the planning stage to the building stage, with construction of the first properties commencing.

Member of the Legislative Council, Taylor Martin joined the construction crew from the Home4Life consortium to turn the first sod at the property in Swansea, which will include homes for ten people currently living in the Hunter Residences.

“Today marks an important milestone in the delivery of this major NSW Government reform,” Mr Martin said.

Rev Adam Cook said, “We have noticed over the last two years in our food distribution program an increase of working couples coming to use our services.”

“After paying the bills, there is not enough money to buy food for the kids.”

Foodways provides ongoing support to 1300 families, with 50 to 70 families using the services weekly.

They also prepare and provide 300 to 400 meals each week and provide long life and fresh foods.

Rev Cook attributes much of the increase in support required to the ever rising cost of living, in particular electricity.

Rev Cook said, “I am really encouraged to hear of any initiative to reduce the cost of living for everyday Australians.”

Local MP Kate Washington and Shadow Minister for Energy and Climate Change Adam Searle MLC both made time to visit with Rev Cook during the week.

MAUI Thai ten-time World Champion John Wayne Parr, otherwise known as the Gunslinger, delivered an inspiring seminar at Personal Touch Fitness in the Bay. Maui Thai is Thai style boxing, a Martial Art which uses stand-up striking and clinching.

The sport is also known as the “Art of Eight Limbs” as Maui Thai boxers use fists, elbows, knees, and shins in combat.

In 1996 Parr moved to Thailand and lived in a Muay Thai camp for four years; he trained in Bangkok and Pattaya, competing in 30 fights and ultimately winning two World Titles.

It was during his fights in Thailand that he first imitated a Wild West Gunfighter.

This signature was taken on by the Thai’s gaining him popularity.

He now lives on the Gold Coast and runs his own training facility.

Gold at Nationals SHARI Hurdman has taken out Gold at the Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA) Nationals in Melbourne in the 200m sprint.

The 11 year old has gone from strength to strength this year and performed well across all her events representing the NSW Track and Field team at the recent PSSA Nationals in Melbourne.

Shari came home with the Gold Medal in the 11 year old girls 200m sprint with a time of 27.02 seconds.

Anja Hurdman, Shari’s Mother, told News Of The Area, “It was a close race, but Shari’s long stride and ability to finish strongly all contributed to her win.”

Conditions were not favourable.

“The day was cold and wet but luckily her Coach Bob Walkley was there to help with her warm up routine and to motivate and keep her focused,” she said.

Shari also achieved a Bronze Medal with her NSW teammates in the 4x100 metre relay event.

Driving Success

IN 2017 The Raymond Terrace Rotary Club started a program to help disadvantaged or at-risk young people obtain their driver’s licence.

One year later and the program has proven to be a wonderful success with 21 young people passing through the program.

Klosters Ford generously donated the first car to the program.

The program enables youths who may not otherwise have the means, gain access to professional driving instructors for two to three lessons, then continue ongoing sessions with trained mentors.

The driving mentors

are volunteers from many community organisations such as SES, Rotary, and Wahroonga Land Council.

The mentors undergo a safe driver program run by the Port Stephens Council prior to working with the program.

PCYC, local Police, and local high schools are among the many organisations involved in this important community program.

Chief Inspector StephensHunter Police District Tony Townsend said, “It’s wonderful that Brad and the team at Klosters are able to help with this program. In an area like this having your licence is one of the best qualifications you can have.”

The first program graduate and 2018 School Captain of Hunter River High Kieran Morley said, “Mentors were a huge help with my parents working all the time.”

“The program has given me freedom and allowed me the opportunity to start a plumbing apprenticeship.”

Kieran told News Of The Area that after he completed the program he was then able to help other disadvantaged students get to and from school and appointments.

While some young people are recommended through various organisations in the community others may also apply through their schools or The Raymond Terrace Rotary Club.

Stuck in the Mud

JUST how do we keep them out? This is the question on many locals’ minds at the moment.

With two recent community Club thefts, new measures are necessary to keep away these opportunistic thieves.

Recently thieves have preyed on isolated locations and facilities that spend much of the time unmanned.

After the most recent robbery at the Grahamstown Dam Sailing and Aquatic Centre in the early hours of 1 December, Secretary of Port Stephens Sailability, Mr Richard Byrne said, “Seeing how the thieves got in there and then into our shed makes me wonder: just how do you keep people out?”

Using the very rope that helped store the equipment, thieves tied as much as they could to steal the 15 foot Quintrex launch.

Kayaks, compressors, paddles, battery chargers, right down to the most insignificant plastic dustpan were stolen.

Attaching the boat trailer to the Club’s tractor the thieves then proceeded to drive through a gap in the fence.

They then snuck down on the grass alongside the Campvale Pumping Station towards Richardson Road.

Fortunately the thieves drove into a ditch and got the tractor bogged.

Unable to get it out they abandoned the robbery and fled the scene.

With the help of the Hunter Water Ranger, members of Sailability Port Stephens were able to recover both tractor and boat and all the equipment.

The tractor is a vital asset for Sailability, providing the means to launch the safety boat supplied by Port Stephens Council for their children from Special Needs classes and adults from Day Care Centres and Group Homes.

Mr Byrne told News of the Area, “We were very lucky to recover everything.”

“Security has now been improved.”

Police are continuing with their investigations.

New Jets Arrive in Style

HUNDREDS of people lined the Nelson Bay Road / Medowie Road intersection on Monday to catch a glimpse of the Royal Australian Air Force’s latest acquisition.

Welcomed in by the outgoing Classic Hornets, the new RAAF F-35A Joint Strike Fighter Jets arrived to start work.

Wowing the crowd with a series of flyovers, replete with aerobatic tricks, the Jets made a jaw-dropping entry to the neighbourhood.

Minister for Defence Christopher Pyne told those present at the official welcome, “The Joint Strike Fighter is a game-changer.”

“It is the most advanced, multi-role stealth fighter in the world and will deliver next generation capability benefits and provide a major boost to our intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.”

Plane spotting enthusiast and photographer, Mr Marcus Bertino travelled from Hoppers Crossing near Melbourne to witness and record this historical event.

Speaking to News Of The Area, Mr Bertino said, “I have always had a strong passion for aviation, in particular Military aircraft.”

“I love the noise and am fascinated by the speed and power they have.”

Mr Bertino whose day job is at the Telstra store in Altona is keen to pursue a career in the RAAF said, “The display put on today was incredible!”

“It was well worth the trip up from Melbourne just to see this and will be something I will not forget.”

Wedding Generosity for Starlight Foundation

LONG term local business owners Paul Swain and Jodie Belford have been together for 12 years.

Together with their seven children Paul and Jodie have spent the past 12 months preparing for their wedding to be held on their property.

Many hours were spent creating ponds, gardens, paths, and arbours for their special day.

On Saturday 1 December, surrounded by 90 very special friends and family, Paul and Jodie finally shared their moment and became husband and wife.

Jodie said, “We endured bush fires in surrounding suburbs, hurricane like winds, torrential rain all in

the lead up to our day.”

“We celebrated well into the night, and our day was spectacular: we couldn’t have asked for more.”

But the magic does not stop there.

Jodie told News of the Area, “We’d been together so long there wasn’t anything we needed.”

Dear News Of The Area, THE Veteran Golfers of the Nelson Bay Golf Club held their annual presentation dinner at the Golf Club on the evening of Monday 3 December.

The winner of the prestigious “Tenten Perpetual Trophy” this year is member Jeff Birch.

The trophy is presented to the winner of the best Stroke round of the year.

The trophy was inaugurated by Harry Tenten a long time member and past President of the Nelson Bay golf club.

Harry Tenten was a well-known local builder, having immigrated from the Netherlands after WW2, and establishing Rutten and Tenten Builders with his friend and fellow Netherlander Peter Rutten.

Community may not actually understand size of increase Dear News Of The Area,

I READ your article “More on Rates” in the December 6th edition of News Of The Area with some disappointment.

It is not a “7.5% rate rise over 7 years...” it is a 66% compounded rate rise over 7 years. Or if you prefer, a 7.5% rate rise each year for 7 years, compounded.

I believe it is vitally important that the community has the correct facts

about this rate increase.

From attending the information meeting and discussions with others in the community, I can confidently say that there are still a great many members of the community who are confused about the size of the proposed rate rise and reporting such as this only adds to that confusion.

Massive Crowd at Christmas Carnival

By Kelly MAY and Heather SHARP MEDOWIE locals had the opportunity to dust off their Santa hats and warm their vocal chords with this year’s Christmas Carols held on Friday, 7 December.

The annual Christmas Carols held at Ferodale Park and hosted by the Rotary Club of Williamtown saw an enormous boost this year of locals and businesses in

attendance.

With a rebranding and a new name, the Medowie Christmas Carnival was a dancing, singing, and show ride spectacular.

Former President of the Rotary Club of Williamtown, and organising committee member, Mr Geoffrey Hamilton told News Of The Area, “The night was an absolute success.”

“It is such a joy to see the many smiling faces

of children and families enjoying the night’s festivities.”

“We have been fortunate enough to have Medowie Christian School come on board this year boosting the committee from four to 12.”

“We hope to continue this year’s success in 2019 and thank the local community for their support.”

The Carnival featured children’s rides, market stalls, food vans, the usual

live music and entertainment, much of it provided by local schools.

Hunter Valley’s best loved Santa attended the event, spreading his usual cheer.

The three primary schools Wirreanda Public School, Medowie Public School, and Medowie Christian School helped with the selling of tickets for the rides and were able to raise valuable funds for their parent and citizen groups.

What’s your advice on renovation?

GB Medowie A LOT of homeowners are completing renovations these days. In fact it seems to be a national pastime! The majority of the renovation warriors, it would seem, are trying to improve the value of their home for a future sale.

My advice on this would be to ensure you do it right, as a buyer can usually sniff out a slapped together reno a mile off.

For example when you are planning and completing your renovation and plan to paint, ensure that you take the time to prep all surfaces thoroughly prior to commencing with any paint brush. I was showing a home once when the buyers pointed out to me that the weatherboards on the exterior of the home hadn’t been prepared prior to a coat of paint being slapped on.

You could clearly see how quickly and cheaply it had been done.

The paint had been peeling off but instead of sanding them back, undercoating and then repainting someone had just painted straight over the peeling surface. And that is another case of poor presentation and first impressions going wrong.

How much money do you think the potential purchaser was adding up in their head for the cost of sanding back, undercoating and repainting?

THE Port Stephens P-TECH Partnership, commenced at Hunter River High School in January 2017, has had its future assured.

P-TECH accommodates the demand for work-ready employees in advanced manufacturing, engineering and aeroskills.

The number of students opting for a P-TECH pathway has doubled since the introduction of the innovative program, ensuring future generations of young Australians have the skills to equip them for the 21st century workforce.

Principal of Hunter River High School, Ms Deb Dibley said, “P-TECH partnerships between Hunter River High School and industry are providing opportunities for our students to engage with the workplace of today, and better understand the relevance of classroom learning to jobs and post-school pathways.”

Sporting Transition to High School

WITH high school only weeks away for some Stage 3 students, they can now feel more comfortable heading to Irrawang High.

On 4 December almost three hundred Stage 3 students from Wirreanda, Medowie, Irrawang, and Grahamstown Public Schools participated in a non-competitive Multisport Gala Day at King Edward Park in Raymond Terrace.

The day provided future Irrawang students the opportunity to meet each other in a non competitive environment before they merge together in high school.

For the third year,

Irrawang High students from Year 9 accompanied by their PE teacher Mr Hurley, have hosted the Multisport Gala Day. The day included netball, oztag, and soccer for which the Year 9 students participated as coaches and officials.

The Stage 3 students were given the opportunity to mix teams between all four schools with the day’s emphasis being on having fun.

Wirreanda Public School teacher Mr Patrick Hay told News Of The Area, “This year we had two students that took part as the first ever year 6 group three years ago.”

This was an opportunity for them to give back as sports leaders and forge new

The Sports Leadership

Academy is an extracurricular program being introduced in Irrawang High in 2019.

Irrawang PE teacher Mr Damian Hurley said, “Irrawang currently has some fantastic kids that do a lot of voluntary sports leadership during recess, lunch, Gala Days and more.”

“They give freely of their time, with very little in return.”

“The Sports Leadership Academy will recognise the time these students put into extra curricular activities.”

Sail Port Stephens 2019 gets ready to roll

WITH online entries and the Notice of Race now up and running for the 12th annual Sail Port Stephens regatta, an unforgettable sailing holiday experience awaits for everything from IRC, Super 12 and Farr 40 yachts to cruising boats, trailer sailers, 16-Foot skiffs and junior dinghies.

Dates for 2019 are 8-14 April, which falls outside the busy school holiday and Easter periods. The iconic Commodores Cup is held over the first three days, followed by a lay-day to allow crews to enjoy the region’s many attractions.

Racing then heats up for the final three days, both inshore and off, with the Pantaenius Port Stephens Trophy.

Jewel in the crown is the Garmin NSW IRC Championship, which attracts one of the largest and most competitive fleets on the domestic IRC scene. The Super 12 division, for PHRF-rated

boats between 9.1 and 12.2 metres, also conducts its State titles in conjunction with Sail Port Stephens.

The 2019 event will welcome the Farr 40 One Design fleet, while invitations have been issued to trailer yachts (under Cat 7 safety) along with 16-Foot skiffs and junior dinghy classes.

Following consultation with competitors, there are new divisions including a TP52 Class under the IRC banner and a Cruising Non-Spinnaker Class and Jeanneau Class (spinnaker and non-spinnaker) for the Commodores Cup. That means more prizes up for grabs and an easier task for the handicapping committee.

In another change of format, racing for the trailer yachts, skiffs and junior dinghies will be staged during the main event, not as satellite events in the following week. Their courses will be immediately off

The social calendar is equally packed, again commencing with a Monday welcome party hosted by Wild Oats Wines. The Commodores Cup presentation night, traditionally a sell-out, has a beach-themed ball. Post-racing events are also held on the Friday and Saturday at d’Albora Marina’s Broughtons at the Bay function centre, which becomes regatta headquarters.

The Women Who Sail Australia (WWSA) group are holding their third consecutive “Gathering on the Bay” on April 6-7 before making way for crews from a large feeder-race fleet from Pittwater’s Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club.

IN a year of wins the Fingal Bay Women’s Bowls Club have plenty to celebrate.

Ms Diane Henderson of the Fingal Bay Women’s Bowls Club told News Of The Area, “We were winners of the Grade Three Pennants, winning against Lambton Park in the sectional playoff, which saw the Club win the coveted flag for the second time in two years.”

“The team then went on to the district playoffs at Aberdeen, only going down by one point to go to State.”

“Jacqueline Hudson represented Fingal Bay Women’s Bowling Club at the Blind Bowls in Melbourne took out two Silver Medals and a Bronze Medal, she also won a Silver Medal at Charlestown State Bowls in October,” Ms Henderson said.

Jacky is now off to Perth in May 2019 Nationals.

Members Ann Murray, Kerry McFadden were chosen to play in Newcastle District Rose Bowl, representing Newcastle District where they came out the winners.

In the Waves to Wine

Competition three members were chosen for Waves Claudia Perrine, Kerry McFadden, Helen Lynch, and the Waves Teams won the day.

The Club’s presentation day was held in November, with trophies presented to all winners for the year, with club patrons May Maher and Aileen Hoare in attendance.

Estelle Latham is the first winner of Club’s new President’s Trophy, a welldeserved award.

The year ended with festivities at a wonderful Christmas party and concert.

2019 is going to be a hard year for this group of women to beat.

Funds were raised to support women with ovarian cancer.

In particular a local Medowie resident and friend of the netball club, who lives with this disease was close to everyone’s hearts on the day.

Everyone was encouraged to wear teal on the night and give a gold coin donation in exchange for cupcakes and sausage sandwiches.

The evening was a wonderful success raising $300 to support women with ovarian cancer.

President of the Medowie Netball Club, Ms Cheryl Smith said, “A special mentions go to the Dream Team who donated their left over umpire money, to Jeff Endresz who cooked the sausage sizzle, and the AFL club for the use of the BBQ.”

The social competition attracted over 300 players and 38 teams.

The competition included junior girls, senior girls, and mixed teams.

While a large majority of the players were from Medowie, others came from Raymond Terrace, Dungog, Seaham amd Nelson Bay. Run over eight weeks the twilight netball showcased the new Medowie Netball Club courts.

Medowie Netball Club Publicity Officer Ms Kerrie Whitty said, “Twilight was great for the Medowie community and there were lots of happy faces each week.”
