The CEO of Sand Dune Adventures, Andrew Smith, and the Marketing Manager of Port Stephens 4WD Tours, Sean Andrews, received the two awards from Destination Port Stephens as part of its annual acknowledgement of high-achieving ambassadors for the Port Stephens visitor economy. every year to a passionate individual who has made a major contribution to the local tourism industry. Announcing the award, Destination Port Stephens Marketing Manager, Danny Eather, said Mr Smith displayed unparalleled energy and passion and was devoted to promoting the scenic and cultural assets of Port Stephens’ 32km long and 30m high sand dunes, which formed part of the Worimi Conservation Lands. Accepting the award, Mr Smith said: “This award is really a reflection and recognition of our great team behind Sand Dunes Adventures. It’s a privilege to be part of the Port Stephens tourism industry.” Sand Dune Adventures is a not-for-

The current exhibition is ‘Colour and Design’ and a Christmas Display. As of 14 December, the exhibition will change to ‘Summertime Sands’ and ‘Tiny Treasures’. The Christmas display, containing all manner of festive decorations and artwork for purchase, will remain until Christmas Eve. As well as the art, the Centre has beautiful gardens, including a Fairy Garden for children. A Fairy Mailbox is available for children to post their letters to the fairies – see inside the gallery for a blank letter to complete. The Arts Centre survives on the commissions from art sales, cafe profits and the membership fees, set at a very modest $40 a year. The Centre is staffed entirely by volunteers, who freely give their time in the gallery, the gardens and the cafe. The tranquil Garden Cafe

A huge range of original and unique paintings, jewellery, cards, crafts and pottery are extremely reasonably priced and would make excellent Christmas presents as well as supporting local people. The Arts Centre is free to enter, making this a must on any tourist’s sightseeing list. Locals welcome too.

“Regularly check your bank statements and if there are any purchases you cannot account for report them to your bank.” Choosing strong PINs and passwords for all accounts, shredding statements and bills before discarding them and having up-to-date antivirus software installed on your computer can also help. CREDIT card holders are urged to check their statements regularly and report any unauthorised transitions immediately to their bank or financial institution. This advice comes after local residents spoke with News Of The Area about purchases charged to their credit cards without their knowledge. The charges were for several transactions over a five-day period with the amounts ranging from $25 to $840. The residents said they were informed by their bank that scammers will often make small transactions to see if they are approved before moving onto larger purchases. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australian’s lost more than $2 billion to credit card fraudsters last year, double the $1 billion lost in 2010-11. The figures also show a significant increase in online card fraud where purchases are made using stolen account details. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) say scammers have many ways of obtaining credit card details including over the phone and by accessing details from online shopping activities. “Once scammers have a credit card number and security code, they can make purchases over the internet or by phone,”

Celebration of Summer
q
Summer Yachting Fun.
SUMMER in Port Stephens is peak season but the local tourism industry has banded together to launch the area’s firstever summer promotion with activities and programs designed to enhance the visitor experience and inspire holidaymakers to return in the other three seasons. Running through December and January, the new ‘Love Summer, Love Nelson Bay’ program has been launched by the Tomaree Business Chamber, D’ALBORA Marinas, Port Stephens Council and Destination Port Stephens to showcase new activities that highlight the diverse appeal of Nelson Bay as the warm heart of Port Stephens. Events include new twilight markets, live music, late-night shopping along with both New Year’s Eve and Australia Day celebrations. Destination Port Stephens Marketing Manager Danny Eather said that while the region’s beautiful beaches, bays, weather
and fresh seafood continued to attract large summer crowds, the destination could not rest on its laurels. “It’s a competitive market and with so many destinations vying for the visitor dollar, we need to capitalise on our summer influx and give visitors the best holiday ever so that they go home with brilliant impressions, return in autumn, winter and spring and tell their friends all about our beautiful piece of paradise,” Mr Eather said. “Our aim as hosts is for our smiles to be bigger, our welcomes friendlier, our streets cleaner, our service more attentive and the atmosphere more memorable so we’ll be encouraging all businesses operators in Nelson Bay and across Port Stephens to help realise these goals.” Support
of the summer campaign has also come from the local business community with The Nelson Resort, Quad Bike King, Nelson Bay Golf Club, Telstra Store Salamander Bay, Port Stephens Accommodation and Ryan Palmer, all investing in the Love Summer, Love Nelson Bay program. Highlights of the Love Summer, Love Nelson Bay program include: ● Nelson Bay CBD and foreshore twilight markets including the popular Sacred Tree Markets from 4-9pm on December 30 and January 6, 13, 20 and 27. ● A free day of live music,

Movember a Good Cause A SMALL group of Port Stephens Council staff have raised close to $3,500 by growing out their moustaches for the month of November to support the Movember Foundation, which funds more than 1,200 men’s health initiatives worldwide. A group of four men from Council’s Parks Program joined forces and created their own ‘Mospace’ team called ‘RT Parks Boyz’, raising close to $3,000. Several other staff from Council’s libraries, administration building and depots raised awareness for the Movember cause by
growing out their ‘mos’. Parks Program Officer David Roberts raised close to another $500 selling raffle tickets, with the winner drawn yesterday by General Manager Wayne Wallis. Mr Wallis said he is pleased with how staff have taken the initiative with fundraising for men’s health. “I’m proud of how our people have embraced it this year, and the resilience they’ve shown through their fundraising efforts,” he said. “Men are not necessarily known for speaking up about their health issues, so getting involved in Movember is a fun way to show support.
“Seeing so many moustaches around serves as a reminder to men in our community to get their annual check-up, and that it’s okay for us all to talk about our health,” Mr Wallis said. Established as an official Australian charity in 2006, the Movember Foundation distributes funds raised to some of the biggest health issues faced by men, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention, with over five million participants.

A NATIONAL outage for BigPond emails last week is the latest in a string of disruptions for residents and businesses in Nelson Bay and surrounding areas. Problems related to service access, error messages and difficulties sending and receiving emails. When asked at the time of the outage if it was in relation to the NBN rollout, 24-hour Telstra support technician John Dale could not confirm the reason and said it was under investigation by higherlevel technicians. Mr Dale said that Telstra posted updates online at servicestatus.telstra.com regarding service issues. Anna Bay builder Todd O’Leary and his wife Kristy said the issues have been ongoing for some time. “We’ve had problems for at least two months, and not only in relation to our emails,” he said. “We constantly have to reset our modem. My daughter suffers regular Netflix withdrawals,” he joked. On a more serious note, Mr O’Leary said the disruptions were bad for business. “Kristy and I both run small businesses. Internet access is crucial for Kristy’s photography business and
it has interrupted our online accounting systems, which affects productivity,” he said. Anna Bay residents Elizabeth and Adam Howarth reported similar problems. “We’ve had internet issues for at least two months with constant glitches and trouble with our emails,” Mrs Howarth said. “Adam has recently started an excavation and landscaping business, LEED Civil, and being able to communicate with our customers means everything. This is really frustrating,” she

said. But for other residents, connection to the NBN has resolved their previous concerns. Soldiers Point resident Murray O’Dea said his ADSL service was an issue, but connectivity is “all good” since he switched to the NBN. Mr Dale apologised on behalf of Telstra for any inconvenience caused by the outage. He said customers should go to servicestatus. telstra.com or contact the Telstra technical team on 133 933 for updates.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. This week’s conundrum comes from Soldiers Point. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. My neighbour’s dog barks incessantly. Port Stephens Council has asked me to keep a diary, but I’ve got better things to do. Mr PR, Soldiers Point. Dear PR, DID the local council give you any diary guidelines? Because being asked to keep a diary sounds like a dream come true. Now if my literary agent had asked me to keep a diary, I would currently be cashing in on the movie rights. Picture Breakfast at Tiffany’s with a bit of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest thrown in for good measure. Instead I’m sweating like a pig in a shabby consulting office replete with 70s lava lamp and bowls of congealed chicken soup (good for the soul, apparently). Take the diary suggestion as a challenge, PR. Challenges are what keeps the world going – that and climate change action – but hey, the night is too young to dwell on rising temperatures and dying reefs. A barking dog calls and we, PR, must answer it. Now I’m a dog lover, so I’d just go and let the dog out of its yard and bring it into my office so we could assist each other through our days of solitary confinement, alternating between whines and whimpers depending on the day’s events. But not everyone likes dogs. I understand that. So there’s an alternative. I suggest you write about what you see when you go out to investigate the barking dog. Is there a pothole in the road that has been there so long that it’s sprouting leaves? Is the council-maintained verge overgrown? What about the graffiti on the bus shelter that suggests you partake in unsavoury acts with your mother? Write it all down, PR, and send the daily instalments to your council, and maybe even to News Of The Area. I guarantee that dog will be supplied with a councilissued shock collar that’ll make it more placid than Randle “Mac” McMurphy after his lobotomy. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

ON a blustery morning recently, descendants of William and Cecilia Cromarty, their families, council and historical society representatives gathered at Salamander Bay to witness the unveiling of the new white picket fence and plaque dedicated to Cecilia Cromarty, Ann McIntosh and Mary Cromarty. The Cromartys were the first settlers in Port Stephens arriving during 1822. William Cromarty was given 300 acres in Booral for services to the government, however as this land was unsuitable for agricultural purposes the government gave him land at Soldiers Point. William, and his eldest son, passed away on 1st September 1838 whilst trying to recover a lifeboat which had been washed overboard from a steamer. When Mrs Cromarty passed away in 1862, she was scheduled to be taken to Tahlee to be with her late
husband, however, story has it, a huge storm came from nowhere and lasted three days which in turn prevented her from being taken safely across the water. A family member remembered she wanted to be buried at Soldiers Point, overlooking the harbour, high up so she could have a nice view. After her burial, legend has it that the winds died

down a few hours later. Interestingly, it was very blustery on the day of the gathering! Marrion Gilby of Salamander Bay has been thorough in her research and, as a result, is the author of many books dedicated to the Cromarty family. Janet Henderson of Bobs Farm said, “We don’t know who did the original plaque, but there are two
M’s instead of one, so we made sure the new one has the correct spelling.” “I feel very privileged to be part of Port Stephens history. My great, great grandparents were the first settlers here.” After the unveiling, the family and friends enjoyed morning tea and, again, sharing their stories and connection to the original settlers to the area. If you wish to visit this historic site, it can be found at Seaview Crescent, Salamander Bay.

Training is also given on a regular basis to further equip each member to reach the full potential of their business.. The group began five years ago with only three members and now has approximately 28 members. Over the past 12 months BNI Horizon members have passed more than $400,000 in closed business as a
combined group. At last Tuesday’s breakfast meeting at Horizons Golf Club, the room was full of adrenalin as the group came together to share goals, referrals and some wonderful stories and jokes in order to motivate and stimulate each other’s minds and hearts for the busy day ahead in their individual businesses. Some of the businesses include Craig Catlow ICT, Geoff Clark Photographer, Greg Gibbons Office Stationery, Katrina Ridley Bowen Therapy, Anita Marshall Mortgage Broker,
Karen Harris Bookkeeper, Gerry Swan Motor Vehicle Sales and Troy Powell Electrician. “BNI is a great organisation, where we all get to encourage each other in business and build long term relationship building, referring good people to others in our community,” Craig Catlow, President of BNI Horizon, told Bay News Of The Area. “When I refer someone to you it’s my reputation, so I only want to refer the best of the best and that’s what I have found here at BNI Horizons,” Mr Catlow said. Visitors are welcome and BNI Horizons are constantly looking to grow their “membactive” business referral and networking groups. Other branches include Maitland, Cessnock, Rutherford, Newcastle, Nelson Bay, Central Coast, Campbelltown, Liverpool and Bankstown. For more information contact President Craig Catlow at Bright Networks on 0404 337731.

St Philip’s Christian College Port Stephens
Special Feature: PART 3 of 4
A new season begins By Jewell DRURY IN July 2012, the St Philip’s Christian College community was rocked by the news that their much loved founder and College Principal, Mr Chris Walkling, had suddenly passed away at the age of 48. There was an outpouring of grief across the Tomaree peninsula as Chris was known, loved and admired by so many. Through necessity, the search began for a new principal and late in 2012, the Board of Directors announced that someone had been found. Dr Timothy Petterson, a Housemaster from The King’s School in Sydney, was asked to lead the College community with his appointment taking effect at the commencement of the 2013 school year. “Having never met Chris, it is pretty clear from my interactions with others that he was much loved,’’ Dr Petterson told Bay News Of the Area. “I feel enormously privileged to have been entrusted with the leadership of the College and am grateful to Chris for the strong foundation which has been
laid,” he added. Over the past four years, the College has continued to grow both in enrolments and land holdings, and has attracted some outstanding teaching and non-teaching staff. “As we grow, our challenge is not to lose sight of our founder’s heart and the mission, vision and core values of our school.” Christ first, serving one another, striving for excellence, doing what is right and building community are the values which are espoused by the College. “The mission and core values are what attracted me to the College,” Dr Petterson said. Rachael Gillespie’s son, Matthew Gordon, has been attending St Philip’s since Kindergarten and is currently in Year 5. During 2013, Matthew had a massive asthma attack and was taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital very close to death. “Dr Petterson, Mrs Barbara Hayes and Karen Coleman rang me every day to make sure that Matthew and I were okay,” Rachel Gillespie told Bay News Of The Area.
Matthew returned to school two weeks later, needing close monitoring and medication throughout the school day.
“The staff were so wonderful and I am so grateful for them,” Ms Gillespie said. “Dr Petterson would often set time apart to talk
BAYNews Of The Area to Matthew to encourage him and to make sure that he was okay,” Rachael Gillespie added. It is this kind of love and support between the parents, students and staff, that St Philip’s College has become well known.
Next week we will look at the future plans for the College with the imminent opening of Narnia, a 58 place early learning centre earmarked for opening in January 2017.

THOU WALLA Sunset Retreat has been awarded silver in the Unique Accommodation category at last week’s prestigious 2016 NSW Tourism Awards at Luna Park in Sydney. Nominated for the first time, Thou Walla ranked amongst some of the most

of all Port Stephens Council’s parks. “It’s an honour to be recognised by the NSW Tourism Awards, but the real win is knowing we’ve created the best experience for our guests,” Ms Smith said. Thou Walla Sunset Retreat is situated on the tip of Soldiers Point and respects the original Worimi indigenous community; the name, pronounced ‘dha
walla’, signifying a place to gather. In addition to the Sunset Glam tents, Thou Walla Sunset Retreat also features 34 deluxe refurbished, selfcontained villas offering spectacular water views across Port Stephens and west over the bay towards spectacular sunsets. Visit twsr.com.au for more information.
Season for scams LOCAL Police are warning community members to beware of scam-artists trying to take advantage of Christmas generosity. “They sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts or soliciting donations door-to-door for charitable causes although no charity
is involved,” they say. Police advise residents to always ask for identification, say no to the scam-artist’s requests and phone police. Internet scams are also common at this time of the year and can be reported to the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network at www.acorn.gov.au
Santa, aka Ted Brown, distributed gifts and prizes and a kiss and a cuddle later he warmly thanked Vicki for organising the party. He added that she had shown fine dedication over two years keeping her seniors fit with innovative programmes. Julie McAllister Salamander Bay

Helpers Hit Golf Course By David and Rhona BIRSS
q
TUESDAY 6 December was a special day in the Ladies’ calendar at Nelson Bay Golf Club. An Ambrose team event with three clubs and a putter, rather than the 14 clubs allowed in a standard game, was followed by a Christmas meal and party. Special prizes were awarded for ‘best costumes’ as well as winners in the team event. There were some incredible outfits. The course has never looked so colourful and certainly there has never been so many elves and Santa’s helpers seen on Nelson Bay Golf Course, some looking very playful and mischievous. Much work had gone into the synchronisation of outfits with the team members. Special mention should go to the team who won the ‘best
Kylie Baker, Rhondda Shaw, Linda Drake and Kathy McPhail (standing).

costume’ challenge: Bel Hill, Marg Reimer, Pat Hawkins and Glenda McCaw. They would have all looked perfect on a stage in a Christmas Pantomime with reindeer hats perched on their heads, bright red ribbons around their necks, bells, glitter and tinsel draped around themselves and eye-catching globes as earrings. Then to top it off, to make certain there was no confusion, special pinafores with Santa faces attached. All very glamorous, fun and much appreciated by everyone. The results of the golf game somehow took second place to the priority of enjoying the food, catching up on the ‘goss’ or sharing details on how to keep the grandchildren occupied over the holiday period.
