IT was cool retro and modern, all at once, as Shoal Bay Country Club launched its new facility to the community. The venue’s history dates back to the iconic 1930s and there were 30s swimsuit models at the Opening reflecting the venues history. The Club also celebrated the history of the area in black and white images in the downstairs bar. The once rarely used upstairs section of the Club along with the main bar area, has undergone a six million dollar refit and there has been a change of focus for the venue as well. There is nothing old fashioned about the new sound system which will be used as the Club hosts a range of great bands and performers including an upcoming show CONTINUED Page 2

the meeting which was held at the Nelson Bay Bowling Club just one of the venues which the TRRA believes will be affected by the adoption of the proposed Nelson Bay and Foreshore Strategy. While the TRRA showed imagery of a potential building on one site, Mayor Ryan Palmer stated that the ratios in the strategy would only allow a three story building in the position which TRRA show a ten story structure. There is a general consensus that the town will benefit from street scaping and that there is a need to create jobs, particularly to build opportunities for young people. The investment of $140,000 which is matched funding from the NSW Government and Council was well received. Nigel Waters of the TRRA told News Of The Area, “The Mayor’s willingness to review the current proposal to allow 10 storey buildings anywhere in the town centre is to be

Club is also supporting Nelson Bay Soccer and Rugby League Club which is exciting,” he said.

“We therefore welcome the Mayor’s commitment at the forum to consider finer-grained ‘stepped’ height controls, as part of a solution,” he said. When asked about the possibility of the plan allowing building on the

While work on the public areas is now complete, the team are about to embark

on the next stage which is an upgrade of the Conference facilities.

Nelson Bay Foreshore Reserve, Stephen Crowe of Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “The current planning controls have been in place since 2013. “They can be changed, but there is no appetite to develop any of that land by Council.” During his presentation to the floor Nigel Waters of the TRRA stated that if the built height of 10 storeys was adopted for Nelson Bay it would apply to all of Port Stephens. In response to the TRRA claim that the heights would

be set for the whole LGA,Steve Crowe said, “The only height controls under consideration through the ‘Draft Delivery Program’ are those in the study boundary of Nelson Bay.” The draft strategy can be found on Port Stephens Council’s website and you can have your say on the strategy until 4 April, 2018. Council staff are encouraging people to comment on the strategy and held drop in sessions in Apex Park making themselves available to address individual concerns.

Art with Nature

This Exhibition, which combines Art with Nature, will coincide with a major Exhibition at the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra.

By Marian SAMPSON

PORT Stephens Community Art Centre will be presenting a small display of Australian Plants as Bonsai, for one week 14-21 March. This Exhibition which combines art with nature will coincide with a major Exhibition at the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra. Bonsai is an ancient Japanese art that takes patience and dedication. The Chinese also have a version of the art form which is known as penzai, but the

best recognised term for these tiny trees is Bonsai. Trees are planted in small containers and shaped to mimic the shapes of fully grown plants. Sometime those practising Bonsai also create miniature landscapes under the trees that they have lovingly shaped. Bonsai uses copper wire and pruning to train the plant to the desired shape. Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “For many years Bonsai artists around Australia have

been using native plants to create wonderful examples of miniature trees. “There has been an increasing interest in using native plant material and our natural environment has inspired a new approach, to try to incorporate a more Australian style, to emulate how these trees appear in the bush,” she said. The display at the Art Centre will include many native species including several types of figs, banksia and bottlebrush. All trees will be for sale and proceeds support the centre.

While anyone who has ever been in trouble on our waters knows Marine Rescue will be there to help: we often don’t think about the actual costs involved. Peter Young who is on the Fundraising Committee for Marine Rescue told News Of The Area, “It costs over $185,000 to cover the services overheads. “To help raise funds to run the base and boats, along with our collection boats at these three Events we will be running a raffle with a Microsoft Surface Pro 2017 Laptop as First prize, other prizes include fishing gear, a painting and even a BBQ.” he said. at the Marine Rescue base at Little Beach and at various Events around the Bay, it will be drawn on the last day of Sail Port Stephens on 15 April. Marine Rescue Port Stephens volunteers go to sea to help people in trouble in the worst of conditions. They brave the weather, that should see them in a safe harbour, so that we can all rest assured that our families and friends will have help if they are in danger. They tow boats back to harbour, they give their time and expertise as volunteers and they need the support of our community, and those they bring home safe to keep the engines running. One thing we depend on is that Marine Rescue Port Stephens will be there.

Dear News Of The Area, THE State government and Port Stephens Council, are investigating whether the ‘Coastal Lands Protection Scheme’ can be used to bring the Mambo wetlands site back to public ownership after it was sold ‘by mistake’ in 2016. This Scheme is used to bring significant coastal lands into public ownership following voluntary agreement and negotiation between the owner and the government. In the case of the Mambo land the parties in the negotiations will be the owner, who doesn’t particularly want to sell the land and the Liberal/National government that is desperate to buy the land back to minimise any further political damage following its ‘mistake’. When a sale is negotiated between an unmotivated vendor and a desperate purchaser the price paid is usually well above market value. It is highly likely that the Mambo land, which was sold for $250,000, will have to be bought back, by the government, for a price far in excess of that amount. Then we’ll see which Political Party understands a balance sheet! Any buyback price above $250,000 will be money that could otherwise have been spent on schools, roads and hospitals, if it were not for the Liberal governments ‘mistake’. Grant Kennett Corlette

Dear Jasminda,

Business Chamber Members Cruise Bay

Chamber President Leah Anderson advised members how the Chamber was proposing to respond to Council in relation to the draft Nelson Bay Strategy.

By Marian SAMPSON

THE Tomaree Business Chamber enjoyed a great turnout from the business community at a recent Networking Event which was held on Moonshadow TQC. Over 85 local business people gathered and enjoyed a cruise down the bay while networking and learning a little more about each other. Chamber President Leah Anderson advised members how the Chamber was proposing to respond to Council in relation to the draft Nelson Bay Strategy. The Chamber Executive held a special meeting giving up their Saturday to formulate a response to the issue which will impact member businesses and individuals. Leah was also congratulated by the membership for being awarded Port Stephens Business Woman of the Year. Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “This Networking Event will be a hard act to follow, but it is great for us all to experience the Bay and the different business offerings that are here.” Chamber Board Member Mel Turner of Moonshadow TQC conducted a fun speed networking activity which saw businesses connecting on a different level.

The Chamber holds regular Bay Business Breakfasts and Evening networking events for members and is currently working on a Civic Pride program to enhance the look and feel of the Nelson Bay CBD.

My Year 1 son gets a ridiculous amount of homework. If his teacher is doing her job properly, why do we have to be burdened with all this extra work and stress? A frazzled Mrs MR, Hawks Nest. Dear Mrs MR,

I’m not sure what your occupation is, but I’m guessing you have never been responsible for the social, emotional, academic and physical development of up to 30 children for over 30 hours each week (and that is disregarding the many hours of preparation, report writing, professional development and so on). Have you spent much time in a classroom, Mrs MR? I used to be a Year 1 parent helper for just one hour a day. At the end of that hour I would stumble towards the exit gate with an excruciating headache and a nervous twitch. Small children are like rabid dogs. It is very important that you don’t get down on their level or they will quite literally attack you and you’ll never get back up again. Don’t let those cute smiles, innocent eyes and podgy limbs fool you. You are basically in a room surrounded by miniature Kim Jong-uns. Does that sound like fun to you? Then there are the school discos, where poor Mrs Morcombe with her dodgy hip has to stomp along to ‘We Will Rock You’ while you have a bottle of red, a pizza and a whinge at the local tavern. Or what about the school camps where parents like you neglect to mention that little Timothy has a habit of sleepwalking and doesn’t have the mental aptitude to find a toilet, instead choosing to vomit, after a big dose of camp-issued Bolognese, in another kid’s bed. You are also the parent who picks Timothy up half an hour late and Mrs Morcombe has to play babysitter as well as educator, because your job is somehow more important than hers. Teachers should receive nothing but admiration, Mrs MR. If you have to listen to Timothy stutter his way through ‘My Dog Rex’ every night until he works his way up to ‘My Sister Sue’, then so be it. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Chloe, Cathyrn’s Guiding Star Cathryn’s story is one of courage and love. Cathyrn’s current Guide Dog is Chloe a Labrador, who is four years old.

By Marian SAMPSON

AT a recent meeting of the Fingal Bay Probus Club Cathryn Gilewski spoke about the freedom Chloe has given her. She held members entranced by her personal story of how living with a guide dog is an essential and wonderful part of her and her family’s life. She spoke about The Guide Dogs NSW/ACT breeding programme and how puppies that are selected spend their first year of life with a puppy

raising family. After their year in foster care the puppies that have been identified as having what it takes to be a Guide Dog undergo a six-month intensive training which costs $35,000 for each dog. Cathryn’s story is one of courage and love. The Guide Dogs and their owners are taught a range of commands so that they can communicate and have confidence in their dog. “Much as members longed to pat her, Cathryn told our members that dogs such as Chloe should not be distracted when they are involved in their vitally important work,” she said.

Fun for everyone on St Patrick’s Day

By Rachael VAUGHAN

LET the luck of the Irish rain down upon you this Saturday, for it is St Patrick’s Day to be sure, to be sure. The Tea Gardens Hotel

will be covered in shamrocks and fifty shades of green for the day, and they are even going to look after your little leprechauns as well. The night before, the Tea Gardens Hotel will be hosting

a Kids Disco from 5.30pm to 8pm with free finger food available. Then, on St Patrick’s Day morning, face painting will be available from 11.30am through to 1.30pm.

Please support the advertisers within the Bay News Of The Area

Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes will be calling from 2pm with a bagpipes performance followed by the exceptional Phil McKnight playing a combination of Rock n’ Roll, Blues and Country songs that will no doubt have an added Celtic theme for the day, which will help those glasses of Guinness go down that little bit easier. The fun won’t be ending there though. From 7pm, the talented Kevin O’Hara will hold centre stage and bring St Patrick’s Day to a delightfully harmonious end for another year. For those of you who reside in the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest area, the Tea Gardens Hotel courtesy bus will be running as always. If you reside outside the immediate area but wish to enjoy a wonderful St Patrick’s Day at the Tea Gardens Hotel, the Tea Gardens Hotel/Motel offer

overnight accommodation from single rooms to those equipped for a family to stay. It is quite incredible that a day that celebrates the man who scared away all of the snakes in Ireland has become the day that unites all Irish,

both through birthright and heritage alike, and even a few who just want to pretend that they are. Just for one day, may the Irish hills caress you, may her lakes and rivers bless you, may the luck of the Irish enfold you, may the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you. Happy St Patrick’s Day.

FROM Page 12 Tour B Tour de Cure 2018 told News Of The Area, “Seeing the first bunch of riders coming into sunny Nelson Bay was overwhelming. “Just knowing how far they’d come left me feeling nervous about what lay ahead as I prepared to do the reverse route back to Sydney. “As I left early the next

Thursday, 15 March, 2018

morning to a massive applause from support crew and onlookers, the stunning scenery took my mind off my nerves and I enjoyed the whole experience.” “The Westpac Tour 201 tour was an achievement that I am very proud of and I will remember forever. “I met so many wonderful, kind, generous and funny people and many

will remain friends for life. It was also wonderful to see our executives being closely involved, it shows care for our people and really demonstrates the company values and our culture. Over the last few months I learned many lessons and had realisations that will hopefully make me a stronger and a better person. I am honoured to be part of the Westpac and Tour de Cure family,” she said.
