Iconic Country Club transformation By Jewell DRURY NEW owner Andrew Lazuras is passionate about his new venture of transforming and restoring The Shoal Bay Country Club into the classic iconic hotel that it aches to be. Mr Lazuras, the Club’s third owner in 50 years, recently returned home from Hawaii after a second honeymoon with his wife, and his enthusiasm for all that is to come for the club is contagious. Local architect Adrian Sorensen has commenced the design plans, working closely with Mr Lazuras in order to bring his dreams for the Club to life. The new Shoal Bay Country Club will reflect a casual beachside atmosphere with classic sophistication and style. As well as drawing on French Provincial elements, the Country Club will celebrate a coastal Hamptons style with natural textures including the

These sorts of events will draw people from far and wide and will be a wonderful boost to the local
town. The Port Stephens Council backed initiative was established through the Smart Arts programme in conjunction with the Business Enterprise Centre and Octapod in Newcastle – one of NSW’s leading regional arts and cultural organisations. A vacant space became available in the council’s property portfolio and the artists moved in. They started out as a team of eight, selected through an interview process for an initial three month trial and now have eleven artists on board. All artists must reside within the Port Stephens area to apply to the Collective, currently due to run for another three months. Between them they cover many media including ceramics, textiles, mosaic,

We are all very passionate about bringing arts to the people of the Bay.” Art can help reveal the intrinsic essence of a place and its people. This can clearly be seen in the artists’ work, particularly elements of the natural environment of Port Stephens. The artists’ work is showcased on Instagram at artisancollective_ps as well as their Facebook page. The artists are also looking forward to setting up community workshops in the future. The shop is open Wednesday to Sunday 10am3pm and all works of art are for purchase.

Medal of Valour FROM Page 1 of the weather or events from January 2016. However, for dedicated volunteers at Marine Rescue Port Stephens and the Water Police, it was an evening of unprecedented events which created a lifelong bond between the crews of Port Stephens 40, Danial Thain, the watchkeepers, radio controllers and Water Police 24. Laurie Nolan, the first Medal of Valour recipient said of the conditions that night, “The weather was horrendous, one of the worst storms to ever hit the coastal waters off Port
Stephens. It’s hard to describe to you the conditions that we all faced that day, five to six metre seas, winds up to 50 knots – boat being tossed around like a cork, in absolute darkness without moon or stars or any land-based reference points, never knowing when the next wave would hit.” Communication between the boat and the watch tower was lost for five very long minutes. During this time, the boat was hit with three large waves, knocking the crew off their feet, resulting in injuries – a dislocated shoulder, cuts to the face and one crew member who was trapped underwater thinking, “I wonder how long I can hold my breath with the water washing over me?”
Fortunately, the boat righted itself, but with little time to spare, swift action was called for. Again, the boat was hit by a huge wave resulting in a crew member being pinned to the deck by his safety line wrapped around 30 metres of towline and deck furniture. Mr Nolan severed the lifeline and pulled his colleague to his feet and into the relative safety of the cabin. With many wiping away their tears at the ceremony, it was clear, all 21 recipients were very worthy of their recognition for bravery. Awards to Members of Marine Rescue Port Stephens

Celebrating second century By Mandy ELLIS CELEBRATING a second century is not just for cricket. Westpac Bank is celebrating it’s 200th anniversary for serving the communities with banking facilities. Jason Russell, Bank Manager of the Nelson Bay branch, said, “We are local and continue to be invested within our community.” “The Bump account is a great way for Westpac Bank to continue growth for our customers, we are proactive in supporting charities too, for instance, 2016 saw us celebrate 40 years of supporting the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.” The Bump account is being offered throughout 2017 for babies born during this year. Upon verification, the Trust account will receive a $200 deposit, and will be available from when the child turns 16 years old. If the account is added to by $20 per week, it is estimated, based on 1.5% interest, that the child will have a nest egg of around $19,000 when they reach
their 16th birthday. “I have already registered my interest in the Bump account, being 28 weeks’ pregnant and knowing how busy I will be after the birth it is one less thing to have to think about,” Rebecca Nulty of Shoal Bay, told News Of The Area. “I am ecstatic that I can be part of this celebration, and it will be a good start to her (baby) savings.” With an estimated 300,000 babies expected to be born this year, this is a huge commitment from Westpac Bank. George Frazie, Chief Executive Consumer Bank at Westpac Group, said, “The initiative reflects Westpac’s commitment to supporting the future of Australia, the Bump initiative helps Westpac to mark the beginning of our bicentennial year in the best way possible by investing in the next generation of Australians and inspiring good savings habits with the potential to have a lifelong impact.” For further information, contact your local branch or register your interest at: westpac.com.au/dearbump.

THE legendary songs and sounds of Fleetwood Mac are coming to the Bay. Performing at the Nelson Bay Diggers Club on 25 March, the ‘Running in the Shadows – The Australian Fleetwood Mac Show’ celebrates the acclaimed band and performs all their hits from the early music of Peter Green, to ‘Rumours’, ‘Tango in the Night’ and songs from Stevie Nicks’ solo career. Acoustic guitarist Gary Stewart said the biggest compliment they’ve received from the audience is that
“they closed their eyes and thought they were at the real Fleetwood Mac” concert. Ursula Cain’s rock voice and the jazz vocals of Clodagh Reid offer a unique harmonic blend. “Ursula is a born performer and embodies the spirit and passion of Stevie Nicks,” Gary said. The group also features renowned rock guitarist Eddy Santacrue on lead guitar, Gary Stewart on acoustic guitar and keyboard and Bill Kervin on Bass. Gary told News Of The Area that people of all ages could relate to the songs as they are “a soundtrack to

their life”. “They may have been played on the eight-track in their first car, or their Walkman,” he said. “A lot of our new audience members are under the age of 25, so they grew up with these songs from their parents.” Gary Stewart said the live audience added to the performance’s dynamism. “We are conscious that this is a performance and we are on stage to entertain.” “We would not be doing this if it was not for the audience, the energy and enthusiasm we get back from the audience can be electric,” he said. The show was established in 2000 by Gary Stewart and Ursula Cain. In 2015, they performed over 52 gigs with Gary describing the show as “by far the best and busiest Fleetwood Mac tribute show in Australia”.

Magical Narnia By Jewell DRURY MANY have read about ‘Narnia’ through the fantasy novels created for children by C. S. Lewis, but did you know that we have a doorway into our very own Narnia here on the Tomaree Peninsula? The new Narnia Port Stephens is the newest long day care centre and preschool in Port Stephens. It is a special centre that has been created for the little people in our community and steps into its third week with outstanding feedback from the community. Four year old Destiny Burgmann–Demech started preschool last week at Narnia and is settling in beautifully. “This is Destiny’s first year at preschool and she is all smiles,” Amy Demech told Bay News Of The Area. “My daughter looks forward to going to Narnia and I put that down to the beautiful atmosphere that is created at the centre and because of the kindness of the staff,” Ms Demech added. Inside Narnia are three rooms, set up to promote
a calm and comfortable atmosphere with natural timber furniture and the cosy touches of home. Each room is named in line with the Narnia Theme. “Lucy’s Room” is for children 0-2 years. “The Dancing Lawn” is for children 2-4 years and “The Great Woods” offers a unique transition program. The Great Woods caters for children in the year before school and has a comprehensive transition to school programs in conjunction with St Philip’s Christian College. “We are blessed to be in a location overlooking natural bushland, where we have an abundance of space outside with the children enjoying the gardens, our oversized sandpit, the water pump, bike track and other facilities,” Kelly Wallis, Director of Narnia Port Stephens, told Bay News Of The Area. “It’s an amazing design that incorporates the natural beauty of our surroundings while giving the children a sense of space, fun and adventure,” Ms Wallis said.
WITH horrendous conditions and a “Catastrophic” fire rating for the Hunter last weekend, advice from the local fire brigade is invaluable. An official reading of 45.2°C was recorded at Williamtown RAAF Base at 3.00pm last Saturday. Residents received text messages to warn of the “Catastrophic” rating. Following these extreme conditions, there is plenty of practical
advice that all residents can take note of to make sure they are well-prepared in the event of ongoing high temperatures and bushfire risks. In a bushfire, it is important that you stay up to date on conditions in your area. The NSW Rural Fire Service strongly advises saving these numbers, links and apps. Dear Jasminda,
There is friction at work and our boss has suggested we gather once a week for yoga sessions to improve team bonding and reduce stress. What do you think? Mr JG, Williamtown Dear JG, I MUST say it is nice to get some male mail. Now, onto the question. If we rephrase what your boss actually wants, it will become clearer. It is all in the wording, particularly the fine print. Gather once a week for yoga? What your boss is actually suggesting is that you spend an extra hour of your own precious time with the people you are desperately trying to escape from. That doesn’t sound like stress relief, more like community service. And yoga? I mean do you really want to see Sally from marketing trying to master the downward dog? It’s bad enough spending time with your work colleagues when they’re in a shirt and tie. Imagine Bradley lying prostrate in his tracky-dacks. Or Jed from IT curled up in the corner, nicotine starved and miserable, because by 5.30pm he’s normally downed three Coopers and chain-smoked his cares away at the Bull n Bush. It is not your fault your boss has hired 15 incompatible personalities. Leave at the normal time and take up boxing. It’ll feel so much better pretending the blocking pad is Henry the sales manager than trying to unblock your chakras to whale music. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

OPINION street as a parking zone for leisure vehicles? Street not a Leisure Park of theChildren live in our local streets. They play ball, ride Dear News Of The Area, WHAT happened to pride in our streetscape and pride in community space? This week in my street there are seven boats, five caravans and three trailers parked on the street, on the kerb, on the foot path, in front yard of houses, or half in and half out of front yards. Dangerous! Unsightly! Some of these appear to be permanent fixtures, never moved, never used? What are the Council Regulations concerning the use
Where have the sails gone? Dear News Of The Area, I HAVE come to Port Stephens for the last 60 years and have observed watercraft of all kinds using the splendid blue water of the port. I sailed it for fifteen years in my Heron and have made numerous journeys about the port. Its tourist cachet then was more than ‘where the sun spends the winter’, and there was always large yachts at anchor at or nearby the then modest marinas. The port was a popular destination for watercraft activities. Looking at Nelson and Shoal Bay today, we see a huge increase in powered waterborne activity, a huge number of tourists, several thriving commercial centres,
bikes and skateboards, and walk to school. One day a child will dart out from behind one of these parked obstructions, too late to be seen by a passing motorist and ‘kersplat’, a tragedy! Is the cost of parking leisure vehicles in the secure, designated, businesses already available in the community, prohibitive? Could Council negotiate with these businesses, a discounted price for ratepayers , and so avoid leisure vehicles obstructing streets? Many streets in the Bay are afflicted with this problem. C. Wright, Corlette new first class dwellings and amenities. With marinas at Lemon Tree Passage, Soldiers Point, Bagnalls Beach, Nelson Bay and Little Beach, one would expect that a glance at the port on any day – perhaps different at weekends – would reveal sails of all shapes and sizes tacking and running down wind or moored near the shore. But, to my great disappointment (save for the weeklong Australian Tazer Championships launched from Soldiers Point where 80 craft battled it out) the 30 footers or bigger yachts stay on their moorings. The small club at Soldiers Point do their racing midweek. Most big craft afloat cater for the tourists bussed in from Newcastle. Perhaps the council could play a part in stimulating more sailing activities at this time of the year, but as a marina manager told me, ‘power is the thing these days’. Alan Smith
Council Seeks Community Input PORT Stephens Council is calling on the community to comment on a discussion paper to improve the existing Nelson Bay Town Centre and Foreshore Strategy. Since its adoption in 2012, the Nelson Bay Strategy has sought to guide the town towards becoming more attractive to tourists, the business community and residents. Group Manager of Development Services, Mike McIntosh, said that despite significant growth in the housing and construction industries in the last four years, there has been limited private investment in the town centre. “Council is committed to understanding why limited
development has occurred, formulating ideas to improve the existing strategy, and ultimately enhancing the town centre. “We also want the community to ensure their needs are addressed in future planning,” Mr McIntosh said. With the aim to gather feedback for future amendments, the Discussion Paper – Progress of the Nelson Bay Town Centre and Foreshore Strategy identifies six key themes and 21 ideas for a better strategy. MERGER IS By Rachael VAUGHAN
PORT Stephens residents can breathe a sigh of relief with news just in that the proposed Port Stephens Council merger is officially off the table. A hard battle has been fought by the people of Port Stephens, who have been active and vocal from the first announcement by the Baird Government that a merger with Newcastle Council would take place.

Twenty Sydney councils did not escape their proposed mergers, with five more set to be decided on by the courts, but the Berejiklian Government has relented on regional parts of the State and abandoned their proposed amalgamations. PORT Stephens is famous for its golden sand and pristine beaches. Tourists and locals alike often flock to the more uninhabited beaches, those unpatrolled, to experience the feeling of isolation. During the Christmas holidays, 19-year-old local surfer Corey Smith saved a local 10-year-old boy who was caught in a rip at Samurai Beach. Like a scene out of Bondi Rescue, early last week Corey was again on the scene and rescued a man who was caught in a rip in
the same place. At Samurai beach there is a permanent rip that runs next to the rocks. The local surfers often use the rip to transport them quickly out the back to the sets. “I was with Corey when the chap started waving and I saw in Corey those rare qualities in a 19 year old, who instinctively realised what was happening and what needed to be done,” Scott Ireland, a former police officer and firefighter, told Bay News Of The Area. “At Christmas time he also pulled a small child from the same spot,” Mr Ireland
bad decision.” “Port Stephens residents should now take the chance to pop a cork or cheers a beer with each other and congratulate themselves on a very well battled victory.” “It is twelve months to the day that the residents of Port Stephens braved the stifling heat and celebrated Valentine’s Day at two public rallies to show their resistance to this merger proposal, and today they have been rewarded for
that effort,” he said. Ms Meryl Swanson, Member for Paterson, told News Of The Area “I’m glad the voice of our community has been listened to and these mergers are finally off the table.” Shadow Minister for the Hunter and Port Stephens MP, Ms Kate Washington, has welcomed the announcement that Hunter Councils will not be forced to merge. “I thank the many
Inclusive Bingo PARTICIPANTS of Endeavour Group Port Stephens have partnered with the Soldiers Point Bowling Club to invite the local community to a fun and inclusive bingo program that is tailored to individuals living with a disability. Endeavour Bingo is a social day developed entirely by the participants of Endeavour Port Stephens and will be held at the Soldiers Point Bowling Club on the second Thursday of every month. Endeavour Port Stephens Disability Support Worker Tori Abbott said Endeavour Bingo was developed to encourage a fun and social gathering for not only disability service providers, but also members of the Port Stephens community. “It’s all about inclusion; getting our participants together to meet new people and enjoy a day out with local the community.” By developing Endeavour Bingo, Endeavour Group participants have had the opportunity to design the format of the day, coordinate with the club and will build on their public speaking and social skills by hosting the bingo sessions. “The experience has been a great way for our participants to build their work skills, as well as their self confidence,” Tori said. “The Soldiers Point said. Corey is a reluctant hero stating that, “Surfers do it all the time with no recognition and without as much as a thank you.” In last week’s incident the man in his late 50s entered the water with his daughter at Samurai Beach and within minutes both were waving, signalling that they were in trouble. Within a few minutes the daughter found her feet and managed to get to shore as Corey headed out with his board to help the father. The man, approximately 6ft, 5 and estimated to be well over 100 kg, was completely submerged from exhaustion with his head back and only his mouth out

residents who have committed time and energy to fighting the proposed forced mergers in the Hunter.” “It’s just so disappointing that the NSW government has held a gun to our community’s head for so long, and all for nothing.” “The Hunter Councils have endured over 12 months of uncertainty which has delayed major projects, cancelled elections and seen long serving staff leave the organisations.” she said.
Bowling Club has been incredibly supportive of this new initiative, helping us to promote inclusion within the local community” she said. Soldiers Point Bowling Club Assistant Manager Sam Francis said that Club is happy to be of any help it can to ensure Endeavour Bingo is a success for the local community. “Soldiers Point Bowling Club is very proud of the fact that it was able to provide assistance to this fantastic initiative,” Sam said. “It’s very pleasing to see the participants of the Endeavour Group coming to the club and enjoying the activities”. Endeavour Bingo will run on the second Thursday of every month at the Soldiers Point Bowling Club (10:45am start). Cost of day: $5 for 5 games of bingo. Prizes will be awarded to game winners. The White Sands Bistro located in the Club will be offering $5 lunch specials to all participants on the day. Corey, 6ft, 3, weighing 75 kgs, paddled hard against the rip to pull the man onto his board and paddled him back to shore. “My lungs were burning when I finally got him in, I really didn’t think I was going to get him back,” Corey said. With summer’s heat still bearing down upon us, it is a timely reminder to always swim at patrolled beaches and never swim at beaches alone. q Reluctant local hero Corey Smith and Scott Ireland at Samurai Beach. Chris Doohan expressed his gratitude to the Mayor, fellow Councillors and the management and staff of Port Stephens Council and local government representatives for their resilience and positive attitude through these stressful times as the decision was being considered about Port Stephens’ future. “What doesn’t hurt you makes you stronger, and stronger we are,” said Mr Doohan. “Now we can fully resume our focus on the betterment of Port Stephens.” he said. It has been announced that councils and residents are now likely to go to the polls on the 9 September this year.

Playing 18 ends, the triumphant teams on the day were the Outsiders, with the following scoring 172 to the Insiders score of 143. This is the fourth time the Outsiders have had their name engraved on the trophy. The Insider teams are made up of residents of Fingal Haven and Shoal Bay retirement villages, and the Outsiders are members of Fingal Bay Bowling Club. “We have a friendly game at social level between the villages and the club,” Bob Miller of Fingal Bay said. “Doesn’t matter who wins, so long as the Insiders do.” This year, due to female interest, the event has been opened up to include ladies. Jim Partridge said, “Harbourside is important to us, it has given us funding for our refreshments later and it provides employment for locals and support for the older generation.” “We are grateful to the Sports Club too, as they have the courtesy bus which picks us all up and drops us home again and the staff are wonderful, always helpful.” Graham Weekes, of Fingal Haven, told News Of The Area, “It is a great afternoon, I played on Rink 6, and as a team we had a memorable day, unfortunately, we came second.” The match was almost called off given the poor weather conditions during the morning; fortunately, it cleared up and the 72 players were able to enjoy a friendly match and make plans for next year’s game.

Decades of Disrepair DOCUMENTS obtained by the NSW Labor Opposition under Freedom of Information show that schools in Port Stephens face a delay of up to two decades to repair existing school maintenance issues. Opposition Leader Luke Foley recently visited the Hunter to discuss the $775 million school maintenance backlog facing NSW schools. The NSW Government has provided schools a total of $65 million this financial year to address the repair backlog. Karuah public school has a maintenance backlog of over $280,000, but has only received $15,000 in maintenance funding this year. This budget will only cover five percent of the needed repairs and at the current rate will take 19 years to complete the existing backlog. “Parents expect minor repairs in schools to be addressed promptly, not allowed to build up into the massive backlog we now face,” Kate Washington MP said. Similar situations exist at schools across Port Stephens including a 14 year wait at Shoal Bay Public School. Maintenance issues include everything from broken ceiling fans, carpet needing to be replaced, damaged roofs to broken windows. These are not luxury items but the bare necessities. “Port Stephen’s families deserve better. We need to be building more schools in growing areas, not letting our existing schools fall into disrepair,” Ms Washington said.

THE hot weather was no match for the Nelson Bay ‘Neptunes’ U14 Junior Touch Football team. The formidable sportswomen are now heading to the Junior NSW State Cup in Port Macquarie after their impressive win at the annual Peter Wilson Memorial Championship. Nelson Bay Touch Association teamed up with the NSW Hornets Regional Touch to host the Championship, now in its eighth consecutive year. The event was held at the Tomaree Sports Complex. “The versatile facilities combined with the simple beauty and many activities available are the main reasons as to why the Championship keeps coming back to Port Stephens,” Janelle Gardner, Port Stephens
