MARIKA and Raymond Hutchinson married 45 years ago with Raymond, a Vietnam veteran, working in various positions including as a detective with the NSW Police Force and Marika working as a Community Services Co-ordinator. The couple found Port Stephens through their love of Scuba diving and boating and moved to Lemon Tree Passage and later to Salamander Bay. In 1989, Raymond purchased the Parasailing Business, “Fly n Ski” Shoal Bay and taught himself how to ski and operate the parasailing shute and boat. “Raymond was an amazing man and could put his hand and mind to

anything, learning new skills as they were needed,” Marika Hutchinson told Bay News Of The Area. In 2013, Raymond retired after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Last April, Raymond had a downturn in his health where it was found that he had been misdiagnosed and actually had Lewy Bodies, the same disease that comedian Robin Williams suffered with. Determined that Raymond would not live out his last days in a nursing home, Marika camped for two nights outside the Landcom land release estate at Corlette so she could purchase the smallest and flattest block of land in order to have a purpose built home to accommodate Raymond.

THE next Mayoral candidate in our News Of The Area local election coverage is Medowie family man Desmond Maslen. Des’s family has been a part of the Port Stephens area for a long time, with his father growing up at Bobs Farm, and his Mother’s side of the family hailing from Raymond Terrace, once residing in the two storey building near the old Raymond Terrace swimming pool. Des is married with three children, and one grandchild. Des told News Of The Area, “I, like most people, had little interest in the day to day running of our local council and only gleaned my opinion of what was being done by the same old ‘what I saw in the paper or heard in the pub’ and ‘did it affect me’ approach.” “That was until such time

as ‘it did affect me’ came into play with a proposed sand mine two doors up the road from my property on Cabbage Tree Road and I attended a council meeting.” “My god, what an eye opener that was, within ten minutes I had made up my mind that I must do something here,” he said. Further council meeting attendances reinforced Des’s desire to run for council. “I must say that I am very pleased to see that the Medowie Progress Association has been able to form into a fantastic conduit for people to get their ideas into council.” “With this in mind, one of my first initiatives is to investigate where everyone can log into a community web page and have a say on what matters in their area, even a simple yes or no poll on subjects will be of great

assistance to the decision making process.” “Knowledge is the key to success and the larger the number of people informing us of what is important, the better we as a council can deliver what is needed. Des promises a close involvement with our local state member in gaining a much needed high school in Medowie, and has a desire to see a better police presence here in Medowie. He also plans to reinstate the live streaming of council meetings as a must. “We need to be a transparent council, everyone deserves to know exactly what is going on.” “We need balanced growth in Medowie, increasing numbers of residents must be combined with increased services,” he said. Raymond leaves behind a legacy of love in Marika, their two sons, Christian and Adrian, and four granddaughters Callie, Shelby, Reaghan and Evie. “We had an amazing life together, we travelled, we scuba dived and danced,” Mrs Hutchinson said. If you have any photos of Parasailing with Fly n Ski from 1989 to the early 2000s, please forward your details to jewell@ newsofthearea.com.au.

q Marika Hutchinson looking over photos of the days of “Fly n Ski” Shoal Bay. Raymond made several trips to the home while it was being built but sadly passed away, August 9 2016, before it was finished. Ray loved and enjoyed operating “Fly n Ski” the most and it is because of this that Marika has chosen to make a memorial to him of this time, in their new home, in the hopes of linking Raymond to the home. “I would dearly love any pictures in relation to this business as I plan to make a memorial to him in my home,” Marika said.

Pathway for Whale Watching

There when you need us By Mandy ELLIS

By Jewell DRURY FRIDAY morning saw the opening of the new Whale watching path at Noamunga Headland, Boat Harbour. Federal Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson, Cr Sally Dover and President Peter Murray had the honour of cutting the ribbon to open the new Whale watching path. Boat Harbour Parks and Reserves volunteers first met with the Port Stephens Council in 2015 regarding the possibility of developing a whale watching path at Noamunga headland, Boat Harbour. The justification for developing a whale watching path was visitors who were already damaging the headland to see the constantly passing whales. The Committee applied for various grants and finally received a grant of $20,000 through Federal Member for Paterson Bob Baldwin’s office in 2016. Work commenced in July 2016 and three days later a gravel path was formed to Noamunga headland. Following a further three months of hard work, 50 square metres of eroded ground was transformed into a walking track from Telegraph Point to Iluka reserve with the assistance of the Green Army, Anna Bay Scouts, Tomaree High School and a handful of passionate volunteers. The result is a delightful walkable path through Iluka reserve to the beach. “I am very proud to have been a part of the project and I would like to thank the committee members and the volunteers for giving such a great gift to our community,

q Ribbon cutting honours were given to Federal Member Meryl Swanson, President Peter Murray and Cr Sally Dover. ” Peter Murray, President of the Boat Harbour Parks and reserves volunteers told Bay News Of The Area.

“It’s been a wonderful project with six to 12 local committed volunteers putting in many hours to see

q Robert Pitts, Laura Renehan, Peter Murray, Kevin Graham and Cr Sally Dover, all of whom contributed greatly to the Whale watching path at Noamunga Headland.

the project come to fruition,” Mr Murray said. Mr Murray’s family even rolled up their sleeves with son Garry providing bricks through Austral for the barbecue as well as son Mick along with mate Doug, who erected the fence paling frames to build the concrete signs that now direct the community around the headland. Many thanks were made to some local businesses and individuals for their unrelenting support and work with the project.

MARINE Rescue Port Stephens are there when you need them. As the volunteers of Marine Rescue Port Stephens were out training today, (Saturday), as they do, rain, hail or shine, to ensure they are trained and experienced to rescue under all conditions, skipper Robert Johnson noticed two females in the water, wearing life jackets and hanging onto their outrigger. After being rescued by crew of the PS30, another boat with passengers on holiday from Dubbo took the canoe ashore. Tony O’Donnell, Operations Officer of Marine Rescue Port Stephens, told News Of The Area, “We were lucky we were at the right place at the right time, fortunately, the ladies were wearing life jackets and had spent around ten minutes in the water holding onto their outrigger.” “As our rescues take place out of sight, and we return people to land, we tend to be invisible to the general public,” Tony said. “This is why, it is so

important that we are given exposure through such media as Bay News Of The Area.” “We need to raise $160,000 each year to remain viable, we are run totally by volunteers, however, the maintenance and annual running costs of such an operation must be raised.” Neil Hansford, Deputy Unit Commander said, “This is an ongoing issue, and whilst we have the support of local MPs and due to recent media coverage, our volunteers list has increased, we can still accommodate another 20 volunteers.” “After exhaustive training, the new volunteers will be deployed to roles in the radio room, on the rescue vessels and in the gift shop. No position is appreciated more than the other, we work as a team as that is the only way we can operate.” Further information can be obtained from Lee Uebergang, Unit Commander, 0428 813 585 or email: uc.portstephens@ marinerescuensw.com.au.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,

With all the talk about reduced penalty rates in the catering industries and how the employers will be able to employ more staff I don’t think on the whole that this will happen. You would think on the lines of paying less wages to their staff they would cut out all together the surcharges that they impose on Sundays and Public Holidays either upfront or hidden. I am of the opinion the staff numbers will remain the same as the surcharges will. I will wait and see if there’s any changes. JC, Tanilba Bay Dear JC, In order to answer your question (which was more of a statement or opinion, but hey, I’m up for a challenge) I drove to my favourite restaurant to do some undercover research. As always, the service was impeccable. There was a young staff member there who was so professional that she should not only control food and beverage operations, but potentially the entire country. I am confident her high-level diplomacy skills, energy and persuasive ability would run rings around many executives. She doesn’t sweat, she sparkles. She reinvents swine froth into pork belly foam and dodgy apple pie into tart aux pommes. Now I’m not sure what this young lady earns, probably not a lot, and yet she sashays past tables, flings serviettes like a bullfighter, cracks pepper over main meals with aplomb and makes you feel, just for a few short hours, that it is worth dropping your entire weekly pay for a three course meal. Now that’s talent. But to your letter. Will surcharges come down with penalty rate reductions? By that stage of your letter, I was on my third glass of red, care of Ms Hospitality 2017, and therefore any ability to think critically was somewhat compromised. So I don’t know, in short, if surcharges will come down or if more staff will be employed, but I did have a wonderful night. I may be poorer in the back pocket, but I’m experientially richer, and for that, JC, I thank you. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

I WAS standing outside the Lifeline shop in the Bay and the shop assistant ran outside to find a customer who had dropped some money on the floor in the shop. Alas the person had vanished. Nice to see there are still honest people around. Have a good day and keep up the good work.

I WOULD like to comment on the new arrangements to the entrance to the Salamander shopping centre. It would have been better all around with a Roundabout. The present arrangement is all wrong. I can see it creating more problems. Mr J Kerr Salamander Bay

Rotary Toy Trial Anna Bay By Jewell DRURY

NELSON Bay Rotary Club recently delivered a set of Klipee Educational toys to Anna Bay Public School to enable the school to conduct a trial to assist those children with learning difficulties. Klipee Educational Toys were designed and created

by local mum Laice Moses who saw the need through her own experience with a child who was having trouble with both learning and reading. The results were outstanding, and Klipee was created, and is now being manufactured commercially. Nelson Bay Rotary Club’s close association

with the Anna Bay School, where Rotary Reading is held, enabled a trial of the product to be used with children with learning difficulties. Anna Bay School teacher and Rotary reading coordinator Claire Morrison told News Of The Area, “ I’m excited by the trial which will add an extra dimension

Serenity Sounds By Jewell DRURY

TUNING in to 100.9 Port Stephens FM on Thursday mornings between the hours of 9am-12pm, you will hear the beautifully serene voice of Radio Host Colleen Antcliffe. Ms Antcliffe was asked to be a presenter by long time radio host Brian Watson not long after she retired from a rewarding career in Business Administration and Management. Originally from Newcastle, Colleen Antcliffe and her husband John used to come to Port Stephens often, holidaying and pursuing their mutual love of bushwalking. It was only a natural progression that the couple would move to the area, purchasing a block of land and later building their home here on the Tomaree Peninsula. Wearing two hats at Port

Stephens FM, not only is Colleen a radio host but she is also the secretary of Port Stephens FM. “I love being a radio host because I absolutely love the music,’’ Ms Antcliffe told Bay News Of The Area. “I really couldn’t do what I do without the support of my husband John, he is so very supportive of my role here,” Colleen Antcliffe said. John, is also a member of Port Stephen’s FM and volunteers regularly. Port Stephens FM 100.9 is based in Salamander Bay and broadcasts throughout the Port Stephens region. Property Demand Still Bubbling

q Charlie Elias makes the shift into Real Estate.

THE property market in Port Stephens continues to bubble along with the area still in big demand by families looking for a sea-change, investors and retirees. Close proximity to cities such as Sydney, Newcastle and Maitland, as well as improved road and traffic conditions, are just some of the incentives that the Port remains an exciting place to live. And high on the list is

the community of Anna Bay, which in 2016 enjoyed its biggest turnover of property in a decade. Property market analyser On The House revealed that 91 properties were last year sold in Anna Bay, 10 more than the previous 12 months and the highest since 2007 (104). A total of 30 properties were sold last quarter, an increase of 36 percent, and the median price in Anna Bay for the same period was

recorded in the area. The works will include a new set of traffic lights and a raised pedestrian crossing near the shopping precinct of Shoal Bay. For the implementation of traffic lights, Council acquired the land at the intersection of Shoal Bay and Government roads. According to Facilities and Services Group Manager, Greg Kable, Port

Stephens Council has taken the opportunity to include the installation of drainage infrastructure, which will aid in the future Shoal Bay drainage catchment upgrade. “We will install a new set of pipes alongside the existing drainage pipes from Bullecourt Street along Government Road,” he said. The entire project will be undertaken in two stages

Pedestrian Safety First MAJOR road works at the intersection of Shoal Bay and Government roads in Shoal Bay have commenced and are expected to be completed by the end of June. Charlie Elias, sales agent with Anna Bay’s only real estate agency Port Stephens Complete, said these figures demonstrated that there was no better time for vendors wishing to test the market. “In recent months we have had plenty of interest from buyers looking to invest in the Anna Bay/Boat Harbour/Fishermans Bay area,” he said. “The demand for

He is a proud member of the local community and is totally committed to helping both buyers and sellers achieve their lifelong the works are minimised. “There will be some parking rearrangements and part of the existing car park will be widened to accommodate more vehicles,” Mr Kable said. During stage one, trees along Government Road will be removed and initial drainage works will begin, with pedestrian and traffic plans to be in place. Smooth Transition

By Jo FINN

HAVING a child start school is a time of great excitement, however, it can also bring with it apprehension and anxiety. A community approach to transitioning to school can provide an important social safety net for parents and their child as they negotiate the sometimes confusing maze that is entry to the school system. The Early Childhood Network is holding a free Transition to School Expo at Tomaree High School (Multi Purpose Centre) on 30 March at 6.30pm. The Expo is designed to support parents who have children starting school in 2018 to make informed decisions and meet professionals who will be able to assist them throughout the process. Local education consultant Wendy Eves said having a successful start

to school leads to “more positive life outcomes, both educationally and socially”. “Having a whole of community approach to transition to school goes a long way to supporting children and families to achieve these positive outcomes,” Ms Eves said. Community agencies, such as Gan Gan Family Centre based at Anna Bay Public School, provide programs designed to support families through the transition process. This year Jacqui Orwell from the Gan Gan Centre will be experiencing this transition on two levels. Jacqui will be supporting other parents and also taking a personal journey as her daughter Tami starts school in 2018. “Having Tami start school is a big thing for us. As a mum, my hopes are that Tami will be happy and feel safe at school, she will make friends and be a confident

THE Fingal Bay Bomboras have been fitted out with their new jerseys and certainly look the part as they prepare for the season. The Bommies are working hard towards the challenge of playing in the A-grade competition for the first time in their 20-year history. At training during the week, the boys worked hard on defensive structures, and getting their combinations in attack right. “The line up is impressive and numbers are on track with new faces all over the park,” manager Stuart McDonald said. Coach Bo Earl will be spoiled for choice in a few key positions, retaining most of last year’s team. “The team is looking forward to the challenge after taking the B-grade title,” Mr McDonald said. games (18 March 5pm kick off at Fingal Bay Oval vs North Newcastle and 25 March at Glendale vs Cardiff) to get ready for the season kick off soon after. These games will give Bo Earl a chance to get his best team on the field come round 1. “If there are any budding footy enthusiasts out there who would like to get involved in a great familyorientated club, please get down to Fingal Oval Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm and meet the guys,” Mr McDonald said. The team will be sure to make any newcomers feel very welcome. This week’s trial game will be a twilight game held at Fingal. Kick off is at 5pm and the Bommies would love to have a strong crowd there to support them. The Fingal Bay Bomboras would also like to thank all their sponsors for the 2017 season.
