Bay Artist Exhibition By Marian SAMPSON
FOR an artist, holding an exhibition of your work, is exposing, sharing your view of life, the universe and everything. Three respected Bay artists recently took the plunge and held a successful major art exhibition at Nelson Bay Golf Club. Nada Yonge, Nikki Water & Robyn Killen have been working tirelessly to put together a great body of works for their exhibition of paintings called ‘Through Our Eyes’. Nada, Nikki and Robyn are well known local artists, all who share a great love of art, and have known each other for many years. Nada Yonge told News Of The Area, “We have worked tirelessly together in support of the local Port Stephens Community Arts Centre and it has been our common interest in art that resulted in this exhibition.” She believes that the exhibition “Through Our Eyes” was a true

and injured koalas from the region. In the past many of Port Stephens koalas were transported to Port Macquarie for treatment which they will now get locally. The hospital has the support of Port Stephens Council, and the Port Stephens Koala Hospital will be sited at the Council
managed Treescape facility at One Mile Beach. Catherine Cusack Duty MLC for Port Stephens said, “Port Stephens Koala Hospital will have a special Statewide role in terms of research and education. It is recognition of the significance of the local coastal koala population and the skills and advocacy of the Port Stephens Community.” The new Port Stephens
Koala Hospital will have an operating and treatment room, and four intensive care rooms along with outdoor rehabilitation pens. The facility will also participate in a breeding program which will form a base for scientific research into disease control as part of the new hospital. The project is funded by the NSW Government’s

The Hospital will also be an educational and tourism attraction with tourism funding the services and it is forecast that the koala hospital will inject over $1 million to the local economy each year. While locals are celebrating the hospital, there has been concern around the proposed sale of land by Council near the Mambo Wanda Wetlands core koala habitat site. Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “The block of land in question is not adjacent to Mambo Wanda Wetlands and is zoned R2. If approved, its sale will go towards funding the master plan for the Sports Complex at Salamander Bay. “Council is also working on some new roadway signage to alert drivers when they are entering zones where koalas are active in a view to prevent vehicle strikes,” he said. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb.
In all 34 members and their partners made the journey to the second penal colony. Highlights of the trip included a traditional dinner in the convict settlement; a high tea at Forresters Court on the cliff edge at Cascade Bay, a walk through time at the Pitcairn
Settlers Village and a visit to the home of the late Dr Colleen McCullough author of 27 books, most being international best sellers including The Thornbirds. Golf, fishing and bushwalking were also enjoyed by the more active members of the group. The group also enjoyed
visits to private homes and farms on Norfolk and were enthralled by the stories of their hosts’ ancestors and life in general growing up and surviving without a lot of the basics which we take for granted. The President of Tomaree Probus, Mike Mobbs, told News Of The Area, “This was a highly successful trip which captures the essence of fellowship, fun and friendship which is enjoyed by the members of this Club.”
Dear Jasminda,
My husband likes to hold my hand when we are walking in public, but I can’t stand it. What should I do? Perplexed Mrs PR, Tea Gardens Dear Mrs PR,
We all have individual reactions to PDA (Public Displays of Affection). Hand holding seems pretty low on the list of things that I have witnessed couples doing in public, and quite innocent and cute. We vary in our feelings towards PDA depending on a whole range of things including our upbringing, our cultural differences and our social values. Hand holding could be a sign of your husband protecting you (a bit like walking on the side nearest the road, which is a very honourable and gentlemanly thing to do). It could also be viewed as a sign of ownership (this is my wife, buddy, get your roving eyes off her), which may sit well with you or not, depending on a whole host of things. My husband likes to hold my hand when we are looking at plants in our garden. I’m not sure whether he is being affectionate, or trying to keep me there long enough to finish the weeding, but I’m not complaining either way. I do, however, find it difficult to hold hands when walking, because we are different heights and he takes one stride to each of my two. Hand holding feels a bit like a three-legged race. The only time I do want to hold his hand in public is when we are in Bunnings because I always seem to lose him. In fact, I would quite like to put him in one of those harnesses that used to be all the rage with frazzled parents so their kids wouldn’t take off in public. Perhaps you can show your husband affection in another way. A casual rub on the arm or a peck on the cheek now and then should keep him happy. Otherwise, make sure your hands are full, so the option isn’t there.

Carpe diem, Jasminda
By Rachael VAUGHAN ONE in two Australian men have had a mental health problem at some point in their lives and three out of four suicides are men, according to the Movember Foundation. One Port Stephens man is ensuring that he provides a strong role model for men with mental health concerns, as he shared his story with News Of The Area. For Darren Bisson, an event in February 2017 shook his family to the core. For the next 18 months, Darren did what any typical husband and father would do, and he focused on his family, at what turned out to be at the cost of his own physical and mental wellbeing.
In February 2018, it all came to a head, and Darren realised he needed help, and he put up his hand and asked for it. Darren told News Of The Area, “With no experience in running, I was not sure what I had gotten into.” “With my weight ballooning to 108kg, I started a 6 month marathon training program to begin preparations.” Darren will compete in the NYC Marathon in November. News Of The Area will keep up to date on Darren’s progress as he prepares for this important event. See Darren’s Full story on the News Of The Area website.

All of this hard work paid off when Georgia and her fellow squad mates were offered a very special chance to compete on the world stage. This prestigious event was held in Orlando, Florida in early May, and involved hundreds of teams from all over the world. Georgia’s Mum accompanied Georgia and her squad mates as one of the chaperones. They achieved 8th in the world for Level 3 and 12th in the world for level 2. News Of The Area congratulates Georgia Almond and her squad mates at MCPD Studio on these wonderful results.
GEORGIA Almond has taken her love and passion for Cheerleading to the world stage, showing that hard work really does pay off. This talented athlete has been training in Cheerleading for nearly five years, and clearly has a great passion and talent for her chosen career. Georgia has previously competed at a National level, and with enviable results. Last year at the National Dance and Cheer competition in Melbourne, Georgia came away with two National Titles for Lyrical and Jazz in the dance section, and two National Titles for Level 2 Senior and Level 2 Open in Cheer. Georgia also achieved National Grand Champion in Level 2 and was fortunate enough to be asked to compete in the invitation only Pinnacle Championships, which sees the best of the best go head to head. In the Pinnacle Championships, she completed in various sections, and came away with a First in Cheer, q Georgia Almond. and a Third in Cheer.

Barry is currently recuperating and has adopted a toned down exercise regime along with prescribed medication to assist with his condition.

August 2018 on the Central Coast. On Monday May 7 2018 the club held a District Flag Unfurling Day which was attended by the District President plus three other District Representatives, our Club President Jim Richardson with his wife Nan, representatives of other competing clubs and of course a huge contingent of our Club Members. The team was feted by the wonderful Piper Ian Innes and were piped in and around Soldiers Point Bowling Club and through a guard of honour to the flag unfurling. Ian also entertained us with many wonderful foot stomping songs making it an even more memorable day. Lorraine Cloke encourages anyone interested in giving bowling a try to do so. She believes it is a great way to meet people and you can play socially as well as competitively.
