Richo Reno Reveal q
John Ballantyne, from Nelson Bay, working on his latest illustration.
By Jewell DRURY
WEEKLY
MONDAY November 7 saw the airing of “Richo’s Reno” on Channel Nine’s A Current Affair.
WHEN things get too serious for John Ballantyne, he looks to illustration to let off steam. Nelson Bay’s Mr Ballantyne, a retired Engineer and draftsman, has a unique talent for creating one panel illustrations which succinctly address any situation. Mr Ballantyne, told Bay News of the Area, “I have taught boring technical lectures on engineering, boring for me and boring for the students.”
On the day of the filming of the ‘big reveal’, the town of Nelson Bay was abuzz, with tradesmen’s utes, police cars and Channel Nine vehicles lining the
street of The Richardson’s home. Bay News Of The Area visited the renovation site and was asked by a representative from ACA to keep the project secret until after the show aired. Now the show is aired and the renovation finished, we are free to bring you the story. Nelson Bay resident
“I realised one day, nowhere in the manuals did it say you can’t add humour or laughter to the lectures, so I set about making things fun and interesting for both parties.” After dedicating 49 years of his life to the industry, Mr Ballantyne is now doing something just for him. “It’s a selfish pleasure,” he said. “Creating illustrations CONTINUED Page 2

The period of time from concept to finished product varies, but it is usually about a day, sometimes less. Mr Ballantyne has come on board with Bay News of the Area and will be contributing his illustrations on a regular basis. By Mandy ELLIS IMAGINE keeping your yearly diaries for 82 years. That is what an inspiring, spritely Mr Fuller of Nelson Bay has done. He started writing them when he was
12-years-old and still has them all. Mr Fuller is now using his diaries and memory to write his memoirs via a dictating machine. He is currently up to his tenth year. He recalled a story from his forties when
he was attending an interview at Gladesville Mental Hospital. “As I approached Ward 3 (the Refraction Ward) I noticed the name of the manager and thought it was familiar,” Mr Fuller said. Mr Woods, then
manager of the hospital, recognised Mr Fuller and asked him if his name was Billy Fuller. Mr Woods used to be the truant officer of Billy Fuller’s primary school. “Oh yes, of course I used to truant, we all did,” Mr Fuller told Bay News Of The Area. He recalls Mr Woods saying, “Yes, I remember you well, Billy Fuller.” Apart from his ability at recalling life events, way back to being fiveyears-old and starting school with his brother, Mr Fuller also has a unique birth date. He was born on 02.02.22. His son has researched Australia’s birth records database and is unable to find anyone else, still living, with this date. His son is now taking his search overseas to see if he can find others who share this unique birth date. A person born on this day will be 94 years old.

Richo Reno reveal FROM Page 1 police officer, Margie, not only lost the man she loved but also faced an uncertain future with her two sons, with one suffering from autism.
A Current Affair and an army of big-hearted volunteers and suppliers stepped in to help Richo’s family. Margie was overcome with joy and gratitude when walking around her newly renovated home and seeing all the new features that had been generously donated. Her home had been completely transformed
and made into a much safer environment for Margie and her children . During the reveal, Margie said that, “Our lives changed terribly seven and a half months ago and I didn’t think that I would ever feel better or right again.” “I can’t express enough how much this means to the boys and me. It’s just amazing, you’ve made our dreams come true. I’ll
never be able to thank you all enough, so thank you,” she said. The renovation included a safer play area for her children, brand new kitchen, complete refurbishment of a deck that was once unsafe and brand new appliances and furniture that the Richardson family will be able to enjoy for years to come.

Harmonious tunes for a mother’s love PORT Harmony presents quality choral music to the people of Port Stephens and the Hunter. President of Port Harmony Joanna Davis said, “Its repertoire covers a diverse array of sacred, secular and popular music and the choir performs a number of concerts throughout the year.” Port Harmony’s next concert will be held on Saturday 26 November 2016 at 2.00pm at the Salamander Uniting Church. Entitled “A Mother’s Love”, the concert will feature the choral works of Durante (Magnificat in B Flat) and Mozart (Regina Coeli) performed with string ensemble along with Marian Christmas Repertoire and other songs that celebrate a mother’s love.
Port Harmony’s musical director Kathryn Dries has been at the helm since the choir’s inception in 2010. “Kathryn is a renowned soprano who has performed locally, nationally and in Europe over a 25-year career,” Ms Davis said. “Two other talented local artists will join the group – soprano Kathleen Moore and organist/pianist Callum Close.” Tickets for “A Mother’s Love” are $25 each and are available from Eventbrite.com.au or Black Pepper (ladies fashion boutique at Salamander Shopping Centre). New Bill passed sees Crown Land at Local Council’s discretion By Jewell DRURY WEDNESDAY evening, in the shadow of the US Elections, the passing of the Government’s Crown Lands Amendment Bill took place in the Lower House. The Bill is the greatest change to crown land in more than 120 years, with the government explaining that it will streamline how the states manage their land assets, handing the decisionmaking power of some crown lands to local councils. There are suggestions that the US Elections were being used as a red flag to distract the public from what was really happening in the Lower House. Questions are being raised on why the bill
was pushed through so quickly. A section of the bill gives the Lands Minister Niall Blair the power to hand over Crown land to any government agency deemed as “an appropriate owner and manager of the land”. It is widely believed that this new bill will make it easier to sell off public land to private interests and developers. Nelson Bay resident Bill Harris wonders about the fate of Tomaree Lodge on the Tomaree Headland. “I remember hearing years ago that NSW premier Nick Greiner wanted to close down Tomaree Lodge in order to build a casino,” Mr Harris told Bay News Of The Area. “What’s going to happen next?” Mr Harris

SeaSide Singers seek new Music Director By Jewell DRURY
newsofthearea.com.au
The choir is a forty member strong organisation that was established in 2009 by Diana Souter. Ms Souter will be retiring as of April 1, 2017 and as a result, the choir is looking for someone to take her place from that date. The choir has a traditional choral repertoire of over 200 songs, including classical music, jazz pieces, musical comedy and some arrangements of popular music. Conducting an annual concert in June or July, as well as an annual seniors concert in seniors week, bi-annual Christmas concerts, choral
workshops and appearances in numerous choral festivals certainly keeps the diary full. The SeaSide Community Choir lead the singing at the annual ANZAC Day ceremony in Nelson Bay most years and respond to the community’s needs for entertainment at the many community festivals held in the Bay. “We are a forty member group which includes a strong male chorus of twelve men, providing tenor and bass harmonies when the song requires it and we also have a dozen altos and 16 sopranos,” Jeanette Antrum OAM, President of the Seaside Singers, told Bay News Of The Area. The Music Director that the Choir is looking for will have music qualifications and/or experience and conducting qualifications and/or experience and
someone who can work flexibly in a team environment. Practices are held in the Community Centre every Tuesday night from 7.00pm to 9.00pm. The Music Director is supported by a music team made up of three section leaders for sopranos, altos and men who lead a section practice for that part only, once a week. The position has traditionally been a voluntary one, but there is some room to negotiate a fee for the right person. Expressions of interest will be received up until the end of December, 2016. Enquiries and a job description are available from the President, Jeanette Antrum OAM, on 49846483 or 0418266393, or email jaf.antrum@gmail.com

Frog hits the hot beats at Shoal Bay By Jewell DRURY AUSTRALIA’S hottest new rock band FROG, who recently formed in Port Stephens, is returning to the Shoal Bay Country Club on Saturday 26th November. Performing the music of the Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Offspring and Green Day, you may recognise the boys as locals around town. Frontman Joel Osborn sings up a storm, leaping from one great hit song to another as he belts out Dave Grohl songs and then slides into the cool classic tunes of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Guitars are crafted by the
experienced duo of Brent Dunlop and Ben Eick, who have played together in numerous bands over the years. “Replicating the guitar parts of these bands has been a fantastic journey and privilege,” Ben Eick of Nelson Bay told Bay News Of The Area. Smashing up on drums is drumming legend Brad O’Rourke, providing drum beats with loads of ‘feel’ and energy as he performs super hits by Green Day and OffSpring. SHOAL Bay Resident Kristie Faulkner moved to Shoal Bay from the Gold Coast in 2012. An inspiring artist at the age of 15 years, Kristie sang the National Anthem in front of more than ten thousand people at a Brisbane Bullets game in 1989. This led Ms Faulkner to more opportunities singing in various venues over the next couple of years. When Kristie was 17 years of age, she became the lead singer in a band called
Jump Club. Jump Club’s manager was Greg Shaw who was also Keith Urban’s Manager at the time. Keith Urban credits much of his success to Greg Shaw who orchestrated Urban’s big break in 1990 after Mr Shaw organised an A&R (artists and repertoire) representative from EMI records to see Keith, who later signed him to an EMI Record and Publishing deal. Kristie toured Australia with the band singing on the same stages and on the same club circuit as Keith Urban.

In 1997, Ms Faulkner gave birth to her first child, Ethan, whilst continuing her music career. In 2002, Kristie was signed as a solo artist to a worldwide publishing deal with EMI Music Publishing. Ms Faulkner toured internationally to such places as the USA, Singapore, Macau and Japan. The turning point for Kristie came after the birth of her second child, Savannah, when she realised that it was time to pursue other projects which led her to her second love – photography. In photography, Kristie found a perfect outlet to express her creativity and passion, very similar to song
writing. “I love capturing the beauty in people and in their children suspending in animation, their special moment in time for a lifetime,” Ms Faulkner told Bay News Of The Area. Kristie is an advocate for doing what you love and following your passion. “I have just branched into maternity photography and unique baby photos,” Kristie said. Ms Faulkner also takes Headshots for models and upcoming actor’s portfolios as well as collaborating with artists and musicians for great album cover photography. You can contact Kristie Faulkner at her Facebook page, Exhibit Photography, or contact Instagram, Exhibit Photography Australia.

Marine Rescue Briefs Kate Washington MARINE Rescue Port Stephens recently held a half day briefing for Port Stephens State MP Kate Washington. Ms Washington was initially briefed on the ‘roundthe-clock’ activities of the Unit at the Command Centre at Nelson Head. The MP was also informed of the Unit’s need for additional donations and increased members to ensure it can fully man its lifesaving activities. After seeing the Radio
Communications Centre, Ms Washington was shown the Inner Light Museum and Tea Rooms, and the surrounding grounds that are a now a popular option for local weddings. Ms Washington met the volunteers who operate the gift shop, which provides one of the main sources of income to maintain the Unit’s safety mission. Ms Washington received a tour of the Unit’s rescue vessels, PS31 John Thompson
and PS30 Codi K II, and was then taken out on the Bay to show the capability of the PS31, which was introduced to service in July 2016. Unit Commander Lee Uebergang said, “It is important that politicians and the community realise that the major source of funds comes from donors, sponsors and the community, and though Marine Rescue Port Stephens is highly trained and equipped, it is not an agency of the NSW Government.” “It relies on community funding to maintain the 24/7 rescue umbrella on waters inside and outside Port Stephens,” he said. The Unit expressed its appreciation of the support and interest of Kate Washington MP.

The intensity of our grief, the length of it, and our reactions to it will differ from person to person. According to Lifeline Australia, common reactions include feeling sad or down, frequent crying, shock, denial and numbness. Sometimes you can feel
stressed, anxious, confused, and often exhausted just accomplishing the most menial tasks. Another sign of grief is anger, guilt, shame, blame or even relief. Many times there is a feeling of loneliness mixed with isolation and

Coffee Pods Eco Friendly By Jewell DRURY
WHILE we don’t always think of it as a romantic beverage, coffee has a lot in common with the world’s most famous romantic beverage, wine. The aroma and taste of fine coffee conjures up images of romantic and exotic getaways just as the aroma and taste of fine wine conjures up images of the vineyards of France or the Barossa Valley. The invention of the coffee pod has enabled coffee lovers to enjoy a quality cup of coffee at the press of a q
button. But what is the environmental price of this convenience? Over three million coffee pods are consumed in Australia each day, however most of these pods end up in landfill. It is estimated that these pods can take between 150 and 500 years to breakdown. Nespresso, one of the world’s most well known coffee pod systems, has come up with a solution, and Salamander Village Florist is playing a part in their new initiative.

“Within the Nespresso community, we have a single word to describe our approach to sustainability and creating value for society, the word is ecolaboration,” a spokesman for Nespresso said. Ecolaboration involves collecting used capsules and recycling them instead of having them thrown into the rubbish bins and becoming landfill. According to Nespresso, there are over 14,000 collection points all over the world with over 1000 in Australia. Nespresso’s
network of collection points include their Boutiques found in many capital cities as well as ‘Coffee Capsule Brigades’ at select florists throughout the country. Salamander Village Florist has been selected as one of these Boutique collection points in the Port Stephens Area. Please support this new initiative and take your used coffee pods to Salamander Village Florist, Shop 2/255 Soldiers Point Rd, Salamander Bay.

FRIDAY 11 November saw the Remembrance Day service at Apex Park in Nelson Bay. It was well attended by those wishing to pay their respects, including service personnel past and present, local school children and members of the community. Two pupils from St Philip’s Christian College read the Ode of Remembrance, ‘For the Fallen’ – the poem by Laurence Binyon. The Padre from RAAF Williamtown led those gathered in a prayer to the

fallen. Ex-servicemen joined together to pay their respects to their comrades who had not made it home. Two minutes silence was observed, giving people the chance to think about those lost who gave their lives to protect us. The service concluded with the placing of floral tributes, from various local groups and individuals, at the memorial. Members of the service then proceeded to Wests Diggers for a light luncheon generously provided by the Nelson Bay RSL Sub-Branch.

The lawn outside the club was a bed of red and purple knitted poppies, lovingly made by the Club’s knitting group. The red represent the fallen, with eight separate poppies to represent the eight local servicemen who lost their lives. The purple ones are a touching reminder of the animals that lost their lives during the conflicts. During the lunch, young and old current and retired service personnel mingled and shared their stories, with lots of service medals on display. Secretary of the Nelson Bay SubBranch Russell Durrant had served in Vietnam in 5RAR (army). The ex-Corporal told News Of The Area that he felt it had been a very poignant occasion.

Happy Day in the Bay By Jewell DRURY
AN amazing Jungle theme met patrons at Salamander Bay McDonald’s on Saturday for McHappy Day with staff getting into the ‘swing’ of the day too. This year celebrates 25 years of McHappy Day in Australia. The goal is to raise a record breaking $3.8 million for Ronald McDonald House Charities, which equates to
providing around 28,000 nights’ accommodation for Australian families at one of the 16 Ronald McDonald Houses across Australia. This McHappy Day, $2 from every Big Mac sold helps families with seriously ill children to stay close to their children. Friday night and early Saturday morning, the Salamander Bay staff volunteered their time to create a magical jungle scene
that included numerous monkeys hanging from tree limbs within the restaurant. The scene would have taken hours to create and patrons were greatly impressed with the atmosphere it created. Judi Walker, resident and well-known Face Painter, brought her paints along which was a hit with the younger children. “We are so grateful to local businesses who joined in with

Sacred Tree Markets on Foreshore
By Jewell DRURY
“ART is when you hear a knocking from your soul and you answer,” by Terri Guillemets, is one of The Sacred Tree Markets mantras. Sacred Tree Markets are a unique market created around the premise of artists, designers, growers, makers and healers gathering and creating a beautiful, inspirational and uplifting event. Established by invitation from the Nelson Bay community, Sacred Tree Markets first launched in Nelson Bay Foreshore and d’Albora Marinas on December 11, 2015. The event was run on a trial period of three boutique events. On each of these occasions more than 5000
people visited the market. The Sacred Tree Market organisers and stallholders have a deep and evolving commitment to co-creating an environmentally and ethically sustainable future. Aiming to be unique, artistic, ethical, homegrown and as high quality as possible, The Sacred Tree Markets are based on a belief in compassionate fashion and in sustainable manufacture and trade where every person, their beliefs and their values are honoured. This is achieved through the creation of a high quality, holistic, culturally significant event focused on showcasing art, design, produce and local talent. The commitment is to the ongoing creation of an inspiring event created around the principles of
peace, unconditional love, compassion and service. Sacred Tree Markets have an ever evolving commitment to co-create an ethically sustainable future, asking stallholders to provide environmentally friendly packaging. Artistic, dynamic, fun, high quality and extremely unique stalls are typical of the Sacred Tree Markets. Ganga Ma (Pronounced Gun-ga Ma) is the co-founder and manager of The Sacred Tree Markets. “I am really inspired by conscious consumerism and a grassroots movement towards local design and production,” Ganga Ma told Bay News Of The Area. “I love seeing local businesses doing well, it’s a real driver for me to keep pushing forward,” Ganga Ma

Dear News Of The Area, “To be frank, the same as my opinion of ‘Home & Away’ or Christopher Pyne: complete garbage! Democracy died in America on the 22 November 1963, elections since have been public theatre to maintain the illusion of democracy. Eisenhower warned the world in 1961! Yes, Trump is a wealthy, greedy bigot but Clinton is part of a well-established globalist cabal that has ruined nations since WWII. Republican or Democrat, the electorate will receive a puppet who is controlled by the military industrial complex. The only saving grace is that Trump is not ‘on the inside’ with the globalists.” Matt Brown, Nelson Bay Dear News Of The Area, “The Best of the Worst.” Gary Jones, Shoal Bay

“It was a shock to the entire world, and was really another ‘Brexit’ (a word that has become shorthand for the UK leaving the EU). People may not like the end result they have now, but obviously middle America felt neglected. It’s a warning to Governments to listen to what people are saying rather than listening to the polls.”
Jo Williams of Nelson Bay.
Dear News Of The Area, “I actually don’t mind Trump, I prefer him to Hillary. The American people have elected him so they must know something.”

Dear News Of The Area, “Only in America would this happen. He’s a nut job. If I hadn’t paid my taxes they would put me in jail for 30 years. Not only is Trump building a wall to keep the Mexicans out, I hear that the Canadians have begun building their wall to keep those crazy Americans out of Canada!” Alan Grace, Corlette

David Dahl of Nelson Bay.
Dear News Of The Area, q
Paul Szumilas visiting from Kurri.
“Australians are very opinionated when it comes to bagging out the USA. We as Australians seriously need to look and see if we have any similarities in our Government as theirs and address our concerns instead of worrying about other countries.”
“Here in Australia the NSW State Government used the US election as a red flag to take people’s attention away from what they were doing through parliament. While everyone was engaged by what was going on, the NSW State Government was secretly passing laws that Crown land can now be sold to developers, resorts, housing and industry and mining. Keep an eye on Nelson Bay and watch sand mining take off as well as Tomaree Lodge on the Shoal Bay headland.”

There was also an introductory event for kids aged 9-10 years which involved a 250m swim, 500m paddle and 1.25km run. A fun event for kids aged 11-15 years involved two categories: the shortboard and longboard race. The shortboard and longboard events included a 500m swim, 1km
prone paddle and a 2.5km run. Jack Rixon, a Birubi Point SLSC cadet, participated in the day’s events for under 15s. “The Hydrothon event was very encouraging, in a nice relaxed atmosphere,” Ms Vivienne Rixon told Bay News Of The Area. “Hopefully this will be an ongoing event in our community, it was great to be a part of it,” Ms Rixon said. Each event Hydrothon conducts gives the hosting clubs 85% of all profits as well as promoting awareness programs such as the Stop the Coward’s Punch campaign. Hyrdrothon delivers a professional but fun, safe event that unites communities and gives young kids access to elite athlete expertise through the free NextGen program. In 2018, Hydrothon Legend will become our flagship event. The 3km Swim, 26km Ski Paddle and 21km Run will test not only your body but also your mind.
