Memorial Steps Lovingly Restored By Marian SAMPSON
THE Memorial Steps which were first built in 1929 to access Apex Park from the foreshore area on Teramby Road in Nelson Bay, have been lovingly restored and turned into a Memorial for those who served in World War I. The works are not yet complete with Council, still to install a sandstone block above the Steps to stop mulch from falling down into the stairs and a footpath and bollards will create a feature of the once overgrown site. The RSL Sub Branch is hopeful that the works including the garden which will frame the Memorial will be completed in time for the ANZAC Day Service in Nelson Bay.

The RSL Sub-Branch has applied for a Grant for the works. Tom Lupton Vice President of the RSL Sub Branch told News Of The Area, “We have had nothing but total support from Council in getting the steps which are Heritage listed restored.” The Memorial plaque features the Australian Imperial Forces insignia. “From 1929 Nelson Bay Anzac Day Services were held at the top of the stairs,” he said. The Steps form a part of the Memorial precinct for those from the region who have served. Councillor John Nell said, “I would like to thank the members of the RSL for taking the initiative and working hard to see that the steps gain the recognition that they deserve.” Councillor Nell believes that it is important that we preserve the history and heritage of the region. “The Memorial Steps are an important local feature. Our region is richer in history than many tourists and locals realise,” he said.

Damien stopped his Hazmat vehicle and commenced CPR on Alan while he was still in the car. Damien realised that he had to not only move Alan onto the ground but to get urgent help. He stopped CPR, dragged Alan from the vehicle onto the grass and radioed the rest of the fire crew who had not
stopped. The crew returned to the scene where Brad Dives leapt from the vehicle with a defibrillator. They used the defibrillator to shock Alan three times before the Paramedics arrived. The pair were joined by two off duty Intensive Care nurses, from nearby John Hunter Hospital their combined efforts saving Alan’s life. Damien Parker told News Of The Area, “Every situation is different. We travel in a team, and this was the first time I had to put my training into action.” At the awards Damien heard the story of Alan’s long road to recovery. “It was sad to hear his story: he lost all his short term memory.” Alan who was in a coma for a month, is now back at work, after having to relearn skills that many of us take for granted as adults. “It was great to hear that he is now really living life to

WHAT’s next for Nelson Bay is no longer a question but a plan that the community is being asked to comment on. A diverse mix of Nelson Bay and Tomaree Peninsula residents and stakeholders were invited to attend the launch of Nelson Bay Next which was held at Broughtons. Importantly, The Honourable Taylor Martin MLC was on hand to provide the community with a $70,000 contribution for Nelson Bay which will be matched dollar for dollar by Port Stephens Council. Taylor Martin MLC told News Of The Area, “The $140,000 in funds will be used for engaging a Consultant, improving pedestrian access, traffic flow, parking, and

Oh, I hear you. There you are, standing in a public place, an audience in front of you, your heart pounding, your hands shaking, your face blushing. There are no doubt times when those symptoms could be desired – meeting a new partner, for instance. When it comes to speaking in front of a crowd, however, these are not desirable feelings, because they could be followed by an inability to speak, and then an inability to run from the stage and bury your head in the nearest potted palm because you are dying from humiliation. Instead, you stand there and continue ranting, knowing that the audience is not listening to your words, because they are too busy watching you tremble. The positive in all this is that the audience is not there to throw bananas at you, or laugh at your flaws, or scoff at your words, or judge your private life (unless you are Barnaby Joyce over the past few weeks). q Year 7 students Zac Genders, Joshua Rush and Fletcher Connor participated in the swimming carnival. Photo by Marian Sampson.
By Marian SAMPSON TOMAREE Aquatic Centre was buzzing during the annual two day Tomaree High School Swimming Carnival. There were some great results and both days had a wonderful atmosphere. Students competed in traditional swimming races with breaststroke, freestyle, backstroke and butterfly at 50m, 100m and other distance races as well as enjoying volleyball, cricket and the waterslides at the aquatic centre. The queues weren’t too long to get onto the water slide where students were lining up for second and third turns. Staff donned their boardies and hats, participated in the cricket
and ensured that everyone had a great day whether they were a competitive swimmer or not. Tomaree High School Teacher; Miss Charnelle Crossingham told News Of The Area, “Both carnivals began with very spirited war cries and best dressed competitions before taking the splash in the fun filled carnivals. “It was great to see so many participating in numerous novelty events, including the water sponge relays for those less interested in competing. “At the boy’s carnival, the participation levels in the competition events was excellent, with many age groups having up to five heats per event,” she said.
