100 Poppies By Rachael VAUGHAN REMEMBRANCE Day, Sunday, 11 November 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). MarketPlace Raymond Terrace, along with local Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Schools, wanted to show a mark of respect on this special day to not only our fallen, but to families of the loved ones and the community. Colleen MulhollandRuiz from MarketPlace told News Of The Area, “This year being such a special year, marking 100 years, we wanted this to reflect in a special way with our younger generation showing a mark of respect and telling stories of our fallen and what Remembrance means.” It is with this that school students across Raymond Terrace, Medowie, Salt Ash

and Karuah, along with teachers and people within the community, come together to decorate and tell stories on 100 poppies. Each participating School completed ten poppies each, telling stories of war, survival, sacrifice and remembrance. The one hundred poppies will be placed around the sportsground next to MarketPlace on Sunday 11 November, marking this special day and coinciding with the annual Christmas Festival hosted by the centre. Lue Fagan from Irrawang High School, told News Of The Area, “Each School was privileged to be a part of the MarketPlace poppy initiative, because of the significance of the day the Christmas parade falls on Remembrance day.” “Lots of thought went

War on Waste By Rachael VAUGHAN
WITH the war on waste gaining momentum across Australia as big name supermarkets ban plastic bags, there’s some small fry doing their part to make a big impact in Port Stephens. Year seven Human Science and it’s Environment (HSIE) at Irrawang HIgh School, is continuing the school’s strong stance on recycling and reducing its waste, with its ‘Lead the Cycle 2 Recycle’ campaign. They want to see change and find a better way of recycling in all schools. During their studies, the students found themselves surprised at the lack of importance for separating waste and recycling, and the lack of recycling bins in New South Wales schools. They took it upon themselves to set a goal to make some noise, and hopefully bring about some change in the

Roger Yeo told News Of The Area, “Women are told this is their problem. It is not, it is our problem, it is a men’s problem.” In his address Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer recognised the strength and courage of the women who are victims of violence in attending the event and said enough is enough. Port Stephens Students join together for 100 years of Remembrance FROM Page 1 into the decorating each of the 100 poppies, which gave students the opportunity to acknowledge, in some cases their relatives, the significance of what had happened to our veterans.” The annual ‘Santa’s Arrival’ festival taking place at the sportsground from 10am on the same day, will ask the community to pause at 11am for a short service and a one minute silence as we remember the fallen.
Remembrance Day is a day for the community to pause and reflect on what these men and women sacrificed for our safety. It is vital we use days like this to show the younger generation how important it is to reflect, and to never forget what has been before us, and how it impacts on the lives we live today. Remember on this day when you are out and about, to say thank you to our service men and women for the duties they carried out,
for their country, and for our freedom. MarketPlace has invited Legacy to be part of the event this year, with all funds raised from the event going directly to Legacy to assist them in continuing the amazing work
they do helping our returned servicemen and women, and their families. o Phot ery Gall line On

Care packages for our Troops IT’S that time of year again, when the Williamtown Defence Family Group (WDFG) are starting the ‘Deployment Care Packages’ project and they’d love to invite everyone to participate. This year the project will run from 12 October to 6 November, collecting donations (for box top ups) and individuals filling packages to be sent to deployed troops, and it’s not too late to join in. The group has 200 boxes available for pick up from any of the collection centres including Fighterworld, Williamtown Preschool, Defence Bank, Australian
Military Bank and Overflow Church Medowie. You can participate by making a donation of items or by filling one or more boxes and returning it unsealed to the collection centre. The WDFG will then collect the items or boxes and prepare them for postage to the troops. My 18-year-old daughter has just let me know that she is pregnant. She and the boyfriend recently bought a cat and then left it with me when they moved out, so that shows her level of commitment. I’m worried. Besides, I’m only 39. I feel I’m too young to take this on. Yours truly, Mr PM, Boat Harbour Dear Mr PM, or should I call you Grandpa? Well, this is a fine old state of affairs. There you were encouraging the boyfriend over friendly cricket matches, and meanwhile he was hitting home runs with your princess. There are positives to being a young mum, though I can’t for the life of me remember what they are because I’ve suffered sleep deprivation since the age of 19. Did you not give her the doll that cries and wees and vomits when she was in her formative years? Did you not take her to cafes where screaming babies ruin everyone’s flat white and smashed avocado? Did you not show her images of mindless mothers playing Candy Crush because their brains are so fried? How about some birthing videos in slow motion with the Psycho soundtrack in the background for good measure? But don’t worry too much, Pop, or should I call you Pa or Gramps? You have not lost a daughter, you have gained a son . . . oh, and a baby. Well done, you. And the best part is, when she realises what a hard gig this parenting caper is, she’ll probably be spending a lot more time at your joint. There’s a plus. Or else she’ll just drop the little treasure to your house and go back to being a teenager again while you walk the hallways singing lullabies. Ah, the pitter patter of tiny feet is truly a joy for all to behold, but mostly the grandparents. Carpe diem, Jasminda.
Members, serving and ex-personnel, friends and the community are reminded of and are invited to the Memorial Service to be held in Apex Park, Nelson Bay at 10:45am on Sunday, 11th November 2018. Note: The public and any organization wishing to lay a wreath will need to provide their own. c

Comfort Kits for Emergency Admits The local Tilligerry branch of the CWA has been putting together wonderful hospital packs to help make the disruption to life that little bit easier.

IT is never convenient to go into hospital and it feels like you always leave something
you need at home. If you are unexpectedly admitted into the Mater or John Hunter Hospital in the near future you may get a
pleasant surprise. The local Tilligerry branch of the CWA has been putting together wonderful hospital packs to help make

The CWA Branch creates hospital packs annually and this year have made 99 packs to help those admitted into hospital unexpectedly. They have also crotched 12 beautiful rugs for the children’s ward. As a parent myself that has had a child receive a rug on a day when everything was going wrong in hospital, I can say with certainty that these will be well appreciated and loved.

Marilyn Sanderson of the Tilligerry Branch of the CWA told News Of The Area, “Our small but active branch beavers away to support not only the ongoing projects targeted by the NSW Country Women’s Association, such as drought relief and international projects, but we also support local services including the Rural Fire Brigade, Marine Rescue, The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Hunter Life Education.” The ladies of the CWA will be holding their annual

Singing In Japan By Marian SAMPSON
SINGING in a choir is a wonderful way to improve your mood, reduce depression and decrease stress and anxiety. Port Stephens’ own community choir, the Seaside Singers is currently touring Japan to share the joy of music. The Choir fosters an environment
where members sing together and learn together. The group also conducts social outings. The aim of the Seaside Singers is to have a substantial choir that can produce high quality singing that the community of Port Stephens will support and be proud of. During their tour of Japan the Choir has performed in a range

Nigel Dique of the Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee told News Of The Area, “It has been a joy and a privilege travelling with such a committed group as the Seaside Singers in Japan. “They have been most professional in workshops and performances in our sister cities, performing with Japanese singers.

“The impromptu ‘pop-up’ performances in parks and gardens takes ‘grassroots diplomacy’ to a new level. “Wherever they perform, they attract crowds, including young school children on excursions. We make sure we hand out pamphlets with information about the singers.” “This has been one of the most successful sister cities exchanges ever,” he said.

Banks at the Tavern
By Rachael VAUGHAN
SUNDAY afternoon is looking cruisy, with Anna Bay Tavern setting the scene for a perfect relaxing music of smooth tunes and cool refreshments. Justin Banks hits the stage at 3pm, and promises to provide the perfect end to the weekend. Justin was the lead vocalist in the International Award winning band, “Sonamulate” from 2005 to 2009. He was the only person to have won multiple consecutive International songwriting competitions with his unsigned EP album “Sleepwalking through life”. Justin left a 10 year stint in the music industry to pursue a career in acting and filmmaking, where he has had great success, particularly in his most recent film “Hero” starring
John Jarratt from Wolf Creek and Play School fame. Justin spent 7 years working for the Roland Corporation Australia, where he learned the ins and outs of digital musical instruments. With this knowledge and experience, he has taken solo artistry to another level entirely with his majestic harmonic vocals and clever use of loop pedals and vocal enhancers on stage. He covers a broad repertoire of artists, leaving not a musical genre stone unturned. From Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles, right through to Kings of Leon and Pete Murray. Justin Banks’s set is bound to offer something for everyone, in the perfect Sunday afternoon ambience of Anna Bay Tavern.

ur resident Property Expert, is here to offer advice. Denise will be responding to questions from News Of The Area readers, throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Dear Denise,
How do I present my acreage for sale? DF Bob Farm WHEN it comes time to sell your small acreage or farm, most of the same rules apply to a Residential sale. It’s mainly just on a larger scale. Probably the biggest issues I have, experiencing Rural Sales presentation, is that with acreage there are sometimes lots of old pieces of machinery/hardware lying around. I understand that these are usually handy to have at some point, for spare parts and repairs, but when it comes time to sell, either get rid of them or store them neatly away. Trust me when I say that your buyer can not see past them. They will see your property as poorly kept and unattractive. This is the last thing you want as they will want to pay less for it if anything at all. Another item that’s truly important is the grounds of the property. Have them slashed so that they are park like. This will appeal visually to your buyer. It will also enable your agent & buyers to walk or drive around the paddocks freely, thus having a better viewing. Hope this helps. Denise.
of remembrance, through the exciting discoveries made by the main characters, on their adventurous journey. Her expertly written text connects Australia’s involvement in France and Belgium during World War I to current topics such as the environment, refugees, experiences of trauma, sport, and remembrance. Natural history illustrator, Laura Arnull, has created beautiful imagery that reflects the sombre tone of remembrance on former battlefields. Heather told News Of The Area, “The book teaches Australians about the lasting impact of conflict so it is perfect in the lead up to Remembrance Day as it shows how war still impacts people and the environment even 100 years after the end of World War I.” “The book will appeal to those who want to learn about the impact of World War I.” “A newly designed font, Dyslexie, was chosen for this book as it will make the reading easier for those who have dyslexia or other reading difficulties.” Primary school teachers looking for new material for Remembrance Day are advised
NEWS Of The Area’s own reporter, and Newcastle University lecturer, Dr Heather Sharp, is also a published Author. She can now add ‘published Children’s book Author’ to her list of achievements. Her book ‘Remembering for Peace: The adventures of Emma and Ryan’ follows the adventures of Emma and Ryan as they travel through France and Belgium, finding out what their Great Grandfather experienced in World War I. Emma and Ryan encounter people along the way who teach them the history of the area. With a focus on the Remembrance Trail, children reading this book will learn about areas Australians fought in during the War, and understand the lasting impact conflict has on people and on the environment. The book is intended for independent readers who are already reading chapter books, but still enjoy the warmth of a picture book. The extended narrative provides a depth that will engage readers, and encourage them to think laterally about issues

Washington not impressed over Mambo missing
Port Stephens MP Kate Washington has slammed the recent announcement from Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton which allocates $20 million to buy privately owned koala habitat, but excludes the buy-back of the Mambo Wetlands. Accorcing to Ms Washington, a map released along with the expression of interest details identifies priority areas for purchase in Port Stephens, but seeminly
excludes Salamander Bay where the Government sold 6 hectares of koala habitat to a property developer in 2016. Ms Washington said, “The Government has refused calls to transfer land they already own in Fishermans Bay into the adjoining Tomaree National Park, but they are offering $20 million to buy private land to add to the same National Park. This Government has the wrong priorities.”

Newcastle District Annis Young Competition BOWLS
By Lynda RICHARDS Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club Monday 22nd October: Robyn Beaumont and myself travelled to Raymond Terrace for Round 1 of Newcastle District Annis Young Competition. There were 31 competitors in this Consistency Competition which is held annually. Robyn and I qualified for this event by reaching the final in our club competition. Sadly, due to the luck of the draw, (or bad luck for me), Robyn and I had to bowl against each other the loser is “knocked out” of the competition. After 27 ends Robyn reached the required 150 shots while I only scored 116. On Tuesday Robyn bowled at Heaton Birmingham Gardens, 2 games to be played, she won both of these. Wednesday was a rest day then the semi final was contested on Thursday at Merewether Bowling Club. Unfortunately Robyn lost this contest to Melissa (Missy) Witt from Nelson Bay 153 v 137, Missy went on to gain 2nd place. The competition was won by Adele Pearson from Soldiers Point. Congratulations Robyn on gaining 3rd place, a great achievement. Tuesday 23rd October: Social bowls as usual format for play 3 games of triples and a game of Fours. Prior to play President Robyn Webster welcomed our newest member Jan Coomer. It appeared Beverly Thrift, Julie Kennedy and Karen McPhie were going to be winners in their contest against Francis Betar, Lynda Richards and Maynie Roberts. The score on the 5th end 8 to 0. Thankfully Maynie’s team rallied claiming victory by 4 shots, 18 v 14. A good win for Jan Coomer, Pam Gilchrist and Sandra Leisemann 20 v Sheril Johnson, Carolyn Bywater and Karen Green 13. In the Fours Judi Polak, Dorothy Thompson, Bette Saillard and
q Robyn Beaumont 3rd place winner NDWBA Annis Young Competition. Deyonne Page demolished Ingrid Luck, Bev Rhodes, Bev Stephens and Lynne Green 24 v 6. An evenly matched contest against Dawn May, Lily Smith and Dale Winter 17 v Jean Glover, Jeanette Emmett and Pat Baker 15. The winners on the day winning with the highest margin were Judi, Dorothy, Bette and Deyonne. The winner of the voucher for the Myall Bistro and Café was Pat Baker. Many thank to them for supporting our club with the raffle prize. Thursday 25th October: What a great turn up of bowlers for our fun Thursday bowls. Everyone’s a winner on Thursdays, 12 ends of bowls for $5 a great chance to “have a go”, improve your game. Good to see Francis Betar playing Skip. Three games of Triples was played, Ingrid Luck “swinger” lead in one game. Results are as follows Bev Dunn, Dorothy Thompson and Francis Betar 7 v Jan Coomer, Jo Younghusband and Lynda Richards 10. Jan Kuzmic, Bev Rhodes and Lynne Green 12 v Ronnie Bradley (visitor), Bev Stephens and Maynie Roberts 15. Ingrid Luck, Judi Polak and Bette Saillard 8 v Ingrid, Jean Glover and Loretta Baker 15. Remembrance Day November 11 2018
Lest We Forget
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. On November 11 1918, at 11am, the guns fell silent on the Western Front (Belgium and France) and more than four years of bloody warfare was ended. Over 400,000 Australians enlisted in the First World War – roughly 60,000 never returned home. The First World War was also the first time that those killed in action were not repatriated home to Australia. This changed the nature of honouring their lives and grieving their loss profoundly – making such services as Remembrance Day even more important and symbolic. On Remembrance Day we remember the fallen – but we remember with equal sorrow those who returned battered and scarred from their service; “In War there are no unwounded soldiers” (Jose Narosky). At Peter Sinclair Gardens we will be commemorating Remembrance Day in the following way: Where: 2 Mirreen Street, Hawks Nest NSW 2324 Date: Wednesday, 7 November 2018 Time: 10:00am You are warmly invited to attend our service, as are members of our local community. To find out more, please contact Ursula Roberts on (02) 4997 0767.

Dance n Dazzle students excel FROM Page 16 in Dance Exams
All students passed with 100% pass rate for the studio, an impressive achievement. Principal of Dance n Dazzle, Ms Corynne Darcy, told News Of The Area, “Our students sit for exams every year which improves their overall ability, confidence and flexibility as well as giving students something to strive towards.” “They receive a report, certificate and medal.” “When students have completed their exams it goes towards possible future accreditation for themselves also,” Ms Corynne said the
