Bears for kids in need

CHILDREN in the region who obtain assistance during an emergency, may well be receiving a special furry friend to help them through a difficult situation.

This ‘Trauma Teddy’ project may have began in Victoria 30 years ago, but it has recently spread to other States including New South Wales.

These cuddly bears offer comfort to a child whose family has been made homeless, or involved in a road accident, or a child affected by domestic violence or sexual assault.

Raymond Terrace Lions Club met with Raymond Terrace Fire & Rescue last week to ensure the safe delivery of a box of special bears.

The plea is for all businesses and consumers in Port Stephens to ditch plastic straws.

PORT Stephens Sister Cities program participants have been saying konichiwa once again as they have played host to a delegation of participants in the program from Yugawara in Japan.

In the delegation were Yoshinori Hayatoh, President of the Yugawara International Exchange Association; Seiichi Tsuchiya, Town Councillor; and Tadashi Takahashi, Superintendent of the Yugawara Board of Education.

“The council has met all requirements under this process including developing a Plan for Management for the site and providing public notice of the proposed lease and considering any submissions.

“Raymond Terrace Men’s Shed has been serving the local community since 2011 and this lease will ensure security of tenure at its home in Boomerang Park.”

The building on the site was officially opened in December 2016 and a licence to occupy the site was issued to Raymond Terrace Men’s Shed.

The licence was issued as an interim agreement to ensure legal tenure of the site was in place prior to a subdivision which would allow a lease to be granted.

Makayla is a B Grade badged umpire, which she obtained through her local netball association.

On the day, she umpired boys netball, both years ⅞ and 9/10.

Car Crash Kills Teen

INQUIRIES are continuing after the death of a teenager in a single-vehicle crash at East Seaham.

Just before 4.30am (Tuesday 18 September 2018), emergency services were called to East Seaham Road, East Seaham. It is believed a Subaru Liberty had left the road and hit a power pole sometime earlier.

The male driver and sole occupant, was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital; however, died on route.

Officers from Port Stephens – Hunter Police District attended and established a crime scene.

As inquiries continue into the circumstances surrounding the crash, anyone with information is urged to come forward.

USING his former racing number of 101, former motorX and superX champion Luke George is powering ahead with new business ventures.

You may very well remember us catching up with Luke at his Salt Ash home track some time back. It was here that he was running a ‘Boot Camp’ for aspiring young dirt bike riders in the school holidays.

He had also branched out into the production of venison jerky under the 101 label.

This whole new direction in Luke’s life was accidental – literally. In 2009 the then 20 year old suffered a near fatal crash when a 130 feet (40 metre) leap went wrong.

This saw him land on his head and hospitalised in an induced coma for seven days.

Sheer force of will had him back on a motorbike in record time and competing but he lacked the ‘X’ factor that put him ahead of the pack in his glory days. To the amazement of family, friends, sponsors and fans he retired.

RESIDENTS of Port Stephens can find out how to prepare for the bushfire season as Rural Fire Service brigades throw open their doors to the public this Saturday.

Brigades across New South Wales are taking part in the annual RFS Get Ready Weekend giving local communities the chance to meet the volunteers and find out how to prepare their homes and properties against fire this summer.

“The Open Day is a great chance to meet your local brigade,” said Gavin Smith from Medowie Rural Fire Brigade.

“There will be plenty of activities for the kids – and adults – on the day with fire trucks and equipment on display, games and a sausage sizzle.”

With an ‘above normal’ bushfire season predicted across the State, Medowie Open Day coordinator Gavin Smith said the open day, this Saturday, 22

September, between 10am and 2pm, is a timely opportunity to find out about how to make a bush fire survival plan.

Mr Smith said, as well as completing a bush fire survival plan, residents can also take practical steps around the home to prepare for the season.

“Simple things like clearing your gutters, keeping lawns short and cleaning up fallen leaves, twigs and debris around the property will help.”

“You can also download a Bush Fire Survival Plan guide online or the MyFirePlan smartphone application.”

“Volunteers at the participating brigades will be on-hand to give practical tips,” Mr Smith said.

THE members of the Probus Club of Port Stephens have plenty on their to do lists each month.

In the last month they have enjoyed activities including croquet, a BBQ, dining out, walks, social bowls, a great tour of Fisheries with a picnic lunch, and a movie night as well as their monthly meeting.

This list of activities provides members with the option to join in around two activities each week.

Each month, a small group of keen bowlers compete in the Probus Inter Club Bowls.

They travel all over the district to join other Probus members for a friendly but serious bowls competition.

Ann Gibson President of The Probus Club of Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “Captain George Hammond rounds up a couple of teams for each match, they win some and lose some, but always enjoy the day in the Probus spirit of fellowship, friendship and fun.

“Their participation is always appreciated by their home club who look forward to George’s spirited report of the event at the monthly meetings,” she said.

The members of this club support all the activities with enthusiasm and would welcome anyone wishing to check out the possibility of joining Probus Meetings are held on the

second Thursday of the month, 9.30am at Nelson Bay Bowling Club.

Residents told News Of The Area that this fill, as well as the significant disturbance of contaminated soil, appears to be a contradiction to the EPA’s recommendations for residents within the “Williamtown Contamination Management Area” listed on their website.

The recommendations, created to minimise residents exposure to PFAS chemicals originating from the

RAAF Base Williamtown, state that residents “do not do anything with groundwater, bore water or surface water (including in creeks and drains) that might lead to incidental ingestion (swallowing).”

Residents say that the filling of the already contaminated area, which includes significant swamp land and wet areas, may result in the displacement of the water presently found there.

This displacement could well result in an increase in contaminated

water levels on properties located within the Williamtown Red Zone.

Cabbage Tree Road resident Linden Drysdale spoke to News Of The Area at her property, along with her immediate adjacent neighbours who are also set to be affected by this proposed infill.

She said, “This whole area is high hazard (flood storage), so if you fill one property, the water from the swamp moves to the adjoining properties.”

The development application is just the latest setback for the Red Zone residents who are seemingly caught in a nightmare there is no waking up from.

Linden said, “This man has no intention of living here and doesn’t seem to care about the people who call this place home, we are just the people unable to leave the contamination.”

“Because of the contamination, our paradise lost now sits between the Defence Force and a developer, and this is just another issue on top of a massive pile,” she added.

Port Stephens Council are yet to approve the development application, with Council meeting minutes stating that the development application is recommended for refusal.

Unveil: Charity home Open for Inspection

MEDOWIE was treated to a party, and a star studded morning, when The Children’s Cancer Institute’s ‘Build for a Cure’ house was officially revealed over the weekend, by ambassador Scotty Cam from ‘The Block’ fame.

The house build began on Monday 27 August and targeted to finish in just 21 days..

Every inch of the house has been generously donated from a suite of corporate partners and community groups – including the land, all materials, labour and furnishings.

The house was built in The Bower Estate in Medowie, with the Newcastle and Port Stephens communities rallying together to take on this monumental task.

For reveal day, celebrity Scotty Cam was joined by McCloy Group ambassador Mitchell Pearce, as well as a host of special guests including past contestants of The Block Maxine and Karstan, children’s cancer survivors and their families, medical researchers, architects, builders and interior designers.

Church would like to see blankets returned

SALT Ash Community Church of Christ have put the call out to any Tilligerry residents who sought shelter and support there during the recent fires.

Many residents from Salt Ash, Williamtown and Medowie brought down blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, clothing, phone chargers and more for the Tilligerry residents waiting out the fires

at the church.

Many residents were encouraged to borrow the blankets their children were asleep in when the roads opened, so as not to disturb them further.

Whilst most have been returned to the church, there are still a number of outstanding blankets and sleeping bags that are special to church members, that they would love to see returned when residents are able.

There is also a pile of blankets and pillows that were leant to the church on the night and returned, but which haven’t been collected by their lenders yet.

A kind local also lent her collection of phone chargers and cords to the church for the convenience of the stranded travellers being able to keep their devices running, and the church is looking for her to return the collection to.

What should a seller disclose to potential buyers/selling agent?

SA, Raymond Terrace WHEN selling a home, it is important that you disclose defects that you are aware of in your home or property. As a buyer there is nothing worse than moving in & finding items that are faulty, leading to unknown expense on top of the purchase price. It could leave your buyer with a sour feeling, after what should be an incredibly exciting time. If you are aware of any building or appliance defects, you’re always going to be better off being honest and upfront.

Whenever possible, fixing these items before going on the market is best. It’s a great idea to have a pest & building inspection completed yourself, to identify any issues that you, as the sellers, aren’t aware of.

That way you can amend anything that may possibly hold back your sale and avoid giving potential buyers reason to try to deduct the unknown cost of repair from your asking price. If the defect is something that you do not wish to repair, then at least disclose it to your selling agent for transparency. This

avoids arguments and ill feelings after the sale.

Dear News Of The Area, THE local community must have adequate time to consider Council’s revised Nelson Bay Strategy.

Tomaree Ratepayers and Residents Association (TRRA) has been advised that the next stage in the long running review of the Nelson Bay Town Centre and Foreshore Strategy will see Council’s proposals tabled for decision at the Council meeting on 25 September.

The papers will only

be seen by Councillors a week before the meeting and they will only be publicly available a few days beforehand.

The review of the Strategy has been highly controversial, with the draft published earlier this year proposing a more than doubling of height limits to allow ten storey buildings throughout the town centre, despite clear opposition to major height increases in the 2017 round of consultation.

We are aware that Council received many submissions this year, again objecting to major

height increases. We will soon see how Council has responded to these submissions, but indications are they will still propose high rise buildings in at least some areas.

Given the significance of this issue, and the high level of public interest, TRRA says that it is completely unacceptable for the community to have less than a week to digest and form a view on what will undoubtedly be lengthy and complex documents.

Councillors themselves need more than a week to review the proposals and consult with their constituents.

TRRA calls on Council to defer formal consideration of the revised Nelson Bay Strategy to allow for a longer period for public consideration and reaction, before any final decision is made.

Gardens Visit

A GROUP of twenty of us had a thoroughly enjoyable day at the magnificent Hunter Valley Gardens which were opened 15 years ago, how time gets away. After morning tea at the neighboring village and a spot of shopping we entered the gardens and had a light lunch in the cafe after which we took the train ride around the eight kilometers of pathways

and saw ten differently themed display gardens, unfortunately we were a couple of weeks too early for the roses in bloom, but it was a beautiful day and the gardens looked spectacular with the spring blossoms appearing. I am sure we were all inspired from the experience and will use some of the ideas in our own gardens, be it on a smaller scale.

Dear Mr TH, I guess it depends on the pyjamas. Some people have quite stylish, matching pyjamas that look far classier than your common tracksuit. Others have pyjamas with holes in places where there shouldn’t be holes, so various parts of their anatomy jiggle around and sometimes escape. It is quite horrific.

If the nightwear is stylish, I think it is okay to go as far as the letterbox, but only if you have looked for any traffic and done a mad dash to collect your very important mail. This should be limited to when you are expecting money or tickets or a letter from long lost Aunt Maud, not throwaway junk mail or your power bill.

There may be occasions when you are running very late to drop the kids at school and you feel that it is okay to drive them in your pyjamas because you won’t be getting out of the car. Don’t be so sure of that. You can bet the one day you drive your little darlings to the school gate in your flannelette pyjamas with the top three buttons missing, will be the day you run out of fuel on your way home. Then you will suffer the glares from other parents driving past in their SUVs wearing classy suits on the way to their very important jobs, while you look like a hobo. It isn’t great if you are a canteen helper or on the P&C committee, trust me. You’ll be the talk of the schoolyard.

Pyjamas in the supermarket are never okay, unless they are on the shelf and you are buying them. Wearing your bedclothes to the supermarket really indicates that you’ve given up on the last bit of self respect you had. Of course it is tempting to race in when you want a block of chocolate for your Sunday night Netflix binge, but do you really want to become a social media sensation for all the wrong reasons? It isn’t carefree, it’s just downright daggy and unacceptable.

Part of the special day saw attendees acknowledge and pay tributes to a very important PSSPN member, Rick Pettit, who sadly passed away last week, just shy of the 8th Walk With Us event.

Rick was instrumental in the designing of the obelisk at Solace Place, at Boat Harbour where the walk takes place each year.

The group networked five years ago with the Boat Harbour Parks and Reserves to build walking paths, the obelisk and a special seat.

PSSPN have now set their sights on their next project to fundraise for, a labyrinth garden.

PSSPN says the “motivation for a labyrinth at Boat Harbour came from someone who had experienced grief and loss,

because they are a tool for relief from overwhelming grief.”

“When you walk a labyrinth you do not stop grieving but you come to a better place where you can cope with it.

Providing a labyrinth in a community can support and enhance the community in a variety of ways.”

“It can be a quiet place where walking the labyrinth can be a proactive way to deal with anxiety and stress, PTSD, depression and addictive behaviour.”

Initial costings estimate the project will cost around $40,000.

ROCKY Horror Picture Show is a cult classic, and locals are in for a treat when the classic show gets “punked” at Anna Bay Tavern on 28 September.

Rohan Khan Brown along with the talented Andrew “Woody” Wood and Joel Jakes local music legend Josh Morgan of Equanimity, Newcastle along with heavy hitting cabaret punks The Pits, will perform in the show.

The event is 18+ and will showcase a selection of music from the iconic Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Performer Rohan Khan Brown told News Of The Area, “I’m certainly hoping that fans of the Rocky Horror Show will enjoy the punk rock spin on the classic songs, without necessarily being fans of punk rock.”

While the show will feature the music it is not a full production “the roles are a bit more fluid than otherwise” Brown said.

The stage will see its fair share of fishnet stockings and the infamous gold trunk and blonde wig will also make an appearance on the night.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show was first screened in 1975 starring film stars Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and was narrated by Charles Grey.

By David & Rhona BIRSS Weather-endless blue skies; Golf Course-perfect condition with the recent rain and the warm sunshine; Lady Players: looking forward to renewing friendships and playing in a relaxed but competitive atmosphere. The Nelson Bay Ladies Classic, sponsored this year by Place Property Management, has been running for over 20 years. Considered, within the Newcastle District, to be the premier Ladies’ event, with scores counting towards the final results for the NSW’s Jean Derrin Trophy and the Newcastle District’s Beryl Tobin Trophy. 179 players registered for the Monday and Tuesday events with 180 registered for the Thursday event. These numbers include visitors from Clubs from Surfers down to Canberra. Large groups from Bayview and Long Reef on the Northern Beaches return year after year to enjoy the facilities within easy reach of the Town Centre and the chance to play in the company of the kangaroos and the wild-life that is very active on the golf course.

Highlights of the week: Congratulations to both Alan Daubaras and Chris Mawson, both scoring Eagles in Saturday’s comp. Alan’s Eagle was on the 374 metre, Par 4,
