St Michael’s Christmas Pageant By Marian Sampson THE children, parents, community and staff of St Michaels at Nelson Bay celebrated the story of Christmas together with Father Brian Mascord, Bishop Elect and the past priest of the parish here in the Bay. The performance was delivered tying the modern materialism of Christmas to the biblical story of Joseph and Mary and God’s gift to the world of Jesus Christ. Father Brian told News Of The Area, “It has been five years since I left this

parish and it was hard to leave this community, I wish the community of Port Stephens a happy, holy and celebratory Christmas.” He believes that like the story in the children’s performance of the story, we should look beyond the Christmas gifts and look at the gift of spending time together that Christmas give us all.
Helen Bourne the Schools’ Principal told News Of The Area, “Coming together today with the school community was an amazing way to celebrate the season, looking at more than the gifts we give and receive.” She believes that in celebrating the Christmas story in this way children can see why the giving of gifts has become important. The students and staff have been working on a few projects where they are giving to others, which she said, “Is something we just do, and we encourage the children to be proud of giving to people that are less fortunate.
CRYING together is so less painful than crying alone. Losing a loved one is difficult at the best of times, however, Christmas is especially difficult. After attending a seminar on Grief and Loss at Christmas by Doris Zagdanski, a leading figure in modern day grief and loss, I walked away with some
thoughts on dealing with grief, not limited to Christmas, for the entire grieving process. There is no set time for grieving to finish, grief can take years if not decades to come to terms with. According to Ms Zagdanski, “You are the expert on your grief.” There is no timeline, no right or wrong way and sometimes well-meaning family and friends may say,

Catherine Cusack Member of the Legislative Council was at Mambo Wetlands this week to meet with the community, she told News Of The Area, “As Council has the 175 Hectare reserve, they have the legalities on their side to buy back the land.” She believes that some of the problems faced in acquiring the site relate to the rights of landholders, in Australia the Government cannot just acquire private land without good legal reasons. “The application made for the funding has been sent to the Premier for consideration

Council acted on Community Vision
PORT Stephens Councillors at last week’s meeting endorsed the Draft Progressing the Nelson Bay Town Centre and Foreshore Strategy: A revised implementation and delivery program 2017, which outlines a plan of action for implementing much of the feedback received during the public exhibition period earlier this year. Council’s Strategic Planning Coordinator, Jeffery Bretag, said during this review the community told Council the original Nelson Bay Foreshore and Town Centre Strategy was sound but it was the accompanying implementation program that needed to be refreshed. “So that’s exactly what we’ve done. The community has told us their vision for Nelson Bay and we’ve captured all the key issues; now it’s time to give us feedback on this implementation and delivery program,” Mr Bretag said. “We need to know if we’re on the right track and we’re keen to hear the community’s thoughts on

Dear News Of The Area I HAVE just read (in recent Bay News Of The Area editions) the comments by Roger Ball and Jeff Newman, both residents of Fingal Bay, on their thoughts re: the Fingal Link Road. what can and should be done to move Nelson Bay forward.” Since the 2012 implementation program was endorsed, Council has updated the traffic and transport study, which has informed car parking capacity. The 2017 implementation and delivery program proposes the formation of a ‘Citizen’s Panel’, to give an objective community perspective on what can be done to ease the pressure on parking during peak periods. A feasibility analysis was also conducted to ascertain at what building height development could occur. Port Stephens Mayor, Ryan Palmer, has welcomed the new implementation and delivery plan, and has encouraged a shift in thinking around building heights in the Nelson Bay Town Centre. “The narrative around growth is often a negative one, but growth means both public and private investment in public spaces, which leads to jobs and activation of the foreshore and town centre,” he said. “Growth doesn’t necessarily mean Sydney-style congestion; it means bringing people back to the Bay.

I don’t think I have it in me to endure the obligatory Santa photo this year. My kids are seven, five and three. Do you have any suggestions? Mrs LC, Soldiers Point Dear Mrs LC,
I’m not sure what your issue is with this fine Christmas tradition. What could be more enjoyable than standing in a queue that spans the entire circumference of the local food court with other screaming . . . I mean smiling mums and dads and their well-behaved offspring, all waiting patiently for their special time with the man in red? What could possibly bring more goodwill than joining together as babies howl at being placed on a strange man’s lap, photographers dance with stuffed toys to encourage the money shot, mums wipe spittle from toddlers and dads discuss how much they love forking out for cellophane, solar lights, baubles, LOL Surprise toys, hams, turkeys, prawns, cherries, drones, Lego sets, remote control cars with no batteries, trampolines that need an engineering degree to set up, with stealth, on Christmas Eve, and those boxes of toilet rolls wrapped in gold paper that contain a paper hat and a choking hazard (better known as Bon Bons). My children have always been forced to endure the great tradition of a Santa photo, particularly now they are surly teenagers. The one exception was last year when the queue was worse than every other year combined. Thankfully, the bearded man in the queue behind me had a similar body mass index to jolly old Mr Claus. I asked him to don one of the Santa hats I had in my shopping trolley, took a quick snap with my IPhone, and tried to ignore my kids as they whined “how embarrassing” all the way home. I do believe, Mrs LC, that the answer could be a new innovation that just occurred to me. Let’s call it the Santa Line Sitter (SLS). It involves paying obliging teenagers $10 to babysit your children until they reach position number two in the Santa queue. They’ll be happy, because they can stay glued to their devices, and you can do all your Christmas shopping. A quick text message notification and you can casually return to the queue, get the photo (or the 15 photos, digital pic, fridge magnets, postcards and Christmas mug upsize version) and be off on your merry way. The teenagers could be rated via an app, to make sure they are fine, upstanding queue sitters. I think, with a bit of tweaking, it’s a winner. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Fern Bay Land Use
THE communities of Fern Bay and North Stockton have had their say on a new land use strategy for the area, with a supermarket and retail space seen as key priorities for respondents over the next 10 years. Port Stephens Council is working together with Newcastle City Council to develop the draft strategy, which is due to go before Council in mid-2018. Jeffrey Bretag, Council’s Strategic Planning Coordinator, says the initial consultation period has been vital for informing the draft strategy. “We received hundreds of responses, which gave us a great indication of the vision the residents of Fern Bay and North Stockton have for their community as it continues to grow,” Mr Bretag said. “It’s pretty clear that commercial development is seen as by far the most important priority for Fern Bay and North Stockton, followed by recreation facilities and pathways for pedestrians and bikes. “Residents also said the key priorities for open spaces are accessible amenities and sheltered picnic facilities, while the thing they loved most
about living in Fern Bay and North Stockton was the proximity to the water and to Newcastle. “It was also great to hear some of the community’s ideas for the area, which include improved beach access, an open air concert and movie space, 72 hour camping ground and even light rail from the airport to the Stockton ferry terminal,” he added. Mr Bretag says work is currently underway on the draft Fern Bay and North Stockton land use strategy, with the aim of having the final report to Council by mid-2018. “I want to thank everyone who got involved in the initial consultation period, as their ideas and aspirations for their region are crucial to getting this strategy right,” Mr Bretag said. “Our staff are currently hard at work collating feedback from the initial consultation period and we hope the community’s ideas shine through in the proposed strategy for Fern Bay and North Stockton. “We’ll be going back to the community during the public exhibition period next year to make sure we’ve hit the mark,” he said.

PEOPLE power is the force behind Marine Rescue Port Stephens and each and every member not only counts but they save lives. The 250 volunteer members, of which 35% are women are Marine Rescue Port Stephens, a nongovernment Emergency Service organisation which operates within the NSW emergency management framework as provided for in the State Emergency and Rescue Management (SERM) Act 1989 and the State Rescue Board. What that means is that these people are the first line of response when a vessel is in trouble and lives are at stake in the Bay and out in our ocean. The organisation is subject to direction by the NSW Police Marine Area Command and it is one of 45 Units of Marine Rescue NSW spread throughout NSW. However Marine Rescue Port Stephens is much more than simply an organisation that man’s radios, and rescue boats, it is a community of caring people who make a very real difference. They are a registered not for profit charity which also manages the “Nelson Head Lighthouse & Rescue Station Reserve Trust” for Marine
Rescue NSW as Trustee for Dept of Industry – Lands. Which means, they manage one of the most stunning viewpoints, and wedding venues, on the coast! Laurie Nolan spokesperson for Marine Rescue told News Of The Area, “Volunteering with Marine Rescue is a great way to contribute back to the community, providing a worthwhile service saving lives at sea.” He believes that being a member of Marine Rescue is a great activity for retirement. “There are a number of different volunteering opportunities at the station, including Marine Radio Operator, working in the gift shop, joining the wedding coordination team, fundraising
and joining the Nelson Head Trust which manages the museum at Nelson Head,” he said. While there are many opportunities for volunteers at present Marine Rescue Port Stephens has a limited number of crew for the boats and are actively recruiting for crew members on the vessels as well as other positions. The vessels are on call for emergencies between Seal Rocks and Stockton Bite, the Myall Lakes and as far west within Port Stephens as Soldiers Point. V Dubs rock the Tavern By Rachael VAUGHAN
LAKESIDE Tavern in Raymond Terrace is the place to be this weekend, with live music by the V Dubs hitting the stage on
Saturday night from 8:30pm. V Dubs create their own type of energy and performance, and finish their sets with not an ounce of sweat left.
Lead Singer and Guitarist Richard Boyle believes if you are not totally spent by the end of the show, then you haven’t done your job. Likewise said of the

With many years of experience behind them, they say it is time to bring the old “SCHOOL OF ROCK” back. V Dubs will impress the crowd with their renditions of songs from top artists and bands like Bon jovi, Jet,
Choir Boys, Guns & Roses, The Darkness and many more. Lakeside Village Tavern have made some big changes in recent times with a menu overhaul amongst other things. They pride themselves on providing a quality venue for the community, and encourage you to give them a go for a tops night out with your friends. They are fast becoming a
venue known for their quality live entertainment, and for their support of local bands and solo acts. The Lakeside Tavern was recently a finalist in several categories of the NSW hotel awards for their food and ambience, so get down to the Tavern, enjoy a meal and stay for the entertainment!

Plenty On By Marian SAMPSON
CHRISTMAS time is perhaps the most exciting time of the year, especially if your family and friends have little ones to share the wonder with. Santa Claus with his sack full of toys and goodies is of course every child’s favourite and a special challenge for parents of young believers. Trimming the tree and decorating your home can bring so much excitement and magic to the holiday season. What will you hide in the Christmas stockings along with socks and jocks? Where do you hide the sleigh bells that your child will hear tinkling and how do you
get them off to sleep on Christmas Eve, so you can put the gifts under the tree? Creating magic at Christmas tests every parent’s metal. Where do you hide the gifts? How do you fit in all the shopping? If Santa has a list of every girl and boy that’s been naughty and nice every mum and dad out there has a list of epic proportion to have everything just right for the silly season. On the list there’s the ham, the turkey the salads and fresh seafood that will create a festive feast, not to mention all the ingredients to make the
perfect pavlova, shortbread and perhaps a Lions Christmas Cake and pudding, don’t forget the chocolate money coins for inside the Christmas Stockings! Then there’s the wrapping paper, the cards, the gifts, where to start? As we attack the shops with battlefield precision, to find that perfect gift, we are really looking for the joy we can share, happiness and the memories that we can make. Modern times have seen gifts become gift cards, and vouchers, but you can’t beat a well chosen
gift, bought with love and care. In the lead up to Christmas you can take the pressure off, pre-order your seafood and your ham. What would Christmas be in a region like Port Stephens without Prawns? Our local fishermen will thank you for buying Myall River Prawns and local seafood. Tomaree Business Chamber President Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “It is important in a small community like ours that we consider buying local for Christmas and the Holidays.” She believes that while Christmas is about spending time with family it is also important to think about community. “We were at the Carols at Fly Point doing our bit at the Rotary Club of Salamander

Bay’s fundraising sausage sizzle, the funds raised by Rotary go to those less fortunate in our community, and it is important to me to be seen to be giving back to community and instilling this ethos in my children’s lives,” she said. In shopping local you are more likely to find that special gift that is unique and will bring joy to those around you. Like many families Leah and her children will be spending Christmas with family and interstate visitors on Port Stephens beaches enjoying all that the region has to offer. For many Christmas is more that just the sense of family and belonging, the sharing of gifts and love it is a deeply religious time, marking the birth of Christ in a humble manger so many years ago. There are religious services at Port Stephens Churches which will celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, and of course there are the wonderful carols to be enjoyed. Of course Port Stephens rocks with live entertainment at many venues from Raymond Terrace to the Bay and it’s never too early or late to have a drink with friends and celebrate the festive season. News Of The Area would like to remind everyone to drink responsibly and of course have a designated driver. We would like to wish all our readers and supporters a very Merry Christmas and a happy safe and healthy New Year.
Winner
THE News Of The Area’s ‘Four Huge Events’ competition has been won by Marysha Joelle Stephens (Joe) of Raymond Terrace. Joe said, “Oh My God! I won! That is epic.” ‘Epic’ was probably an appropriate description for the competiton giveaway which saw four family passes won by Ms Stephens. Taraonga Zoo, Red Altert Laser Tag, Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas Lights Spectacular, and Australian Reptile Park are the destinations Joe and her family will be visiting this holiday period. “I'm so ecstatic. Thank you so much, this is incredible,” she said. News Of The Area wish to thank all who entered the competition. This is the second year the newspaper has run ‘Four Huge Events’ and it seems like it’s a popular addition to the competitions and giveaways N.O.T.A. will conduct.

NSW Golf Women’s Medal
By Marian SAMPSON THE States best female golfers descended upon Horizons Golf Resort to battle out the title for the 2017 Golf NSW Women’s Medal Competition Final. Competitors from as far afield as Pambula, Merimbula, Murwillumbah, Dubbo, Orange, Wagga, Temora and the ACT will compete across three divisions in the 18-hole final. Golf NSW Events Manager Olivia Wilson said, “The Medal is an extremely popular event on the golfing calendar with over 7,000 ladies from 200 clubs began the Medal Competition back in January, with competition running until October.” Bob Westbury Director of Horizons Golf Resort who are hosting the event told News Of The Area, “Horizons are really proud to be showcasing the Horizons Championship course at this years finals.” Nicole Bassant of NSW Golf Told News Of The Area, “The players go through six medal rounds held by their own clubs and then advance to a district or metropolitan regional competition play off with those coming Gold, Silver or Bronze competing in the finals.” Port Stephens Council is a sponsor of the shotgun start event, Port Stephens Mayor, Ryan Palmer, told News Of The Area, “It is fantastic to have such a large women’s golf event here in Port Stephens.” “We have a great record of women’s sporting events in Port Stephens with events like this one bringing more visitation to the region not just for the event but throughout the year,” he said. The 2017 Women’s Medal Competition State Final Winner was taken out by Jennifer Madsen of Roseville Golf Club.
