upgrade since the major works in the early 2000s and was now in need of an overhaul to revitalise the CBD and bring back the customer base, particularly from the
local community. The town centre had subsequently become very tired resulting in lack of developer interest and a large vacancy rate (32 vacancies

Free exercise on foreshore... FROM Page 1 time that David Birss saw his first Exercise Trail. In 2003, as David walked along the Bartlett Cycleway, he was transported back to what he had seen in Switzerland and imagined an Exercise Trail installed along the foreshore from Dutchies to Conroy Park. In addition to the equipment he envisaged a leaflet, which would be made available to the community and
tourists through doctors’ surgeries, libraries, tourist information centres and schools. The leaflet is now a reality along with the completion of the Exercise Trail and includes a map showing the four locations from Dutchies Beach through to Conroy Park. It also includes descriptions of the 15 different exercise options across the locations. The equipment is made from recycled plastic bags, a much more
sustainable material than the timber David had seen in Switzerland, and it is virtually maintenance-free. “My motivation was driven by a belief that we must educate and encourage our children and grandchildren on the importance of exercise in a healthy lifestyle,” David Birss said. In December 2015, at the launch of the Exercise Trail, David announced a new project to raise funds to provide an outdoor, MultiGym Circuit, with locations at Victoria Parade and at Little Beach.
Mayor Bruce MacKenzie made the initial donation for the Multi-Gym Circuit during that launch. This action was immediately followed by the Rotary Club of Nelson Bay. Rotary pursued two major grant applications, one from the Federal Government and the second from the Rotary District Foundation. This funding enabled the installation of the equipment that was the subject of the launch on December 14. An additional donation was made by the Rotary Club through their Charity Golf Day. This funding will provide
$28,000 in Scholarships
for additional equipment to be installed in early 2017 at the Victoria Parade site. Approximately $60,000 has been raised by Rotary to meet the total overall cost of $100,000. Mr Birss said, “I believe the Exercise Trail and the Multi-Gym Circuit will be significant assets that will result in better health outcomes to the community and will ensure we maintain our point of difference in the challenge to convince tourists to come to our area for their vacation.”

Palmer to Council... FROM Page 1 which have been influencing the lack of development and the general appeal of Nelson Bay as the CBD for the Tomaree peninsula. Mr Palmer said that it had reached the stage that over the past 10 years there had been no development in the CBD (apart for the Woolworths Development).
He made mention that Salamander Bay Shopping Centre had subsequently become the retail hub. Other issues including Council not meeting parking needs, the need for the two key parking stations upgrade and diversion of Newcastle investments into Nelson Bay were raised by Mr Palmer. Mr Palmer also presented a case in regards to the disconnect between the foreshore and the CBD and the need for residential development in the CBD. He said that Nelson Bay had
been identified as a Strategic Centre in the Hunter Regional Plan and that Nelson Bay “NOW” should be included in the Community Consultation process early next year. This was followed by very strong support from other Councillors who agreed that Nelson Bay needed to be the strong and vibrant CBD for the Tomaree Peninsula. “It was great to see the Councillors show such a great interest in the future of Nelson Bay,” Mr Palmer told Bay News Of The Area.
“We have not seen Nelson Bay progress in 10 years, in which the back half of this period has been a boom time in the property market, we need to capitalise on this market while we still have time,” Mr Palmer said. News Of The Area has made contact with Mayor Bruce MacKenzie, who was at the meeting, for comment and information from Council’s perspective. We will bring you this report.
Nick Arena: 2016 Farmer of the Year OWNER of the largest Barramundi farm in NSW, Nick Arena, has been named the 2016 NSW Farmer of the Year. Nick Arena operates his business at Bobs Farm near Port Stephens, with 1440 square metres of tanks, producing 1000 kilograms of fish a week. In addition, Mr Arena also uses an integrated hydroponic NFT system to produce leafy greens and herbs, which he uses in his on-site restaurant Cooka-Barra and offers daily tours to educate consumers about the pressures of farming and where their food comes from. Minister for Primary Industries, Lands and Water Niall Blair and NSW Farmers’ President Derek Schoen presented Mr Arena with his award at a function in Sydney. Mr Blair said Mr Arena is a leader within the land based fish production industry and is committed to promoting the State’s primary industries sector. “Nick has been recognised for his outstanding farm management skills and innovation. He has implemented business monitoring systems to improve the efficiency of his operations, including an alert system which tracks water flow,

airflow and power supply, daily water testing, fish behaviour and growth production reports,” said Mr Blair. “I congratulate Nick on this recognition and wish him the best of luck as he prepares to open his own retail shop to sell his barramundi and vegetables.” NSW Farmers’ President, Derek Schoen said all four NSW Farmer of the Year finalists were industry leaders and committed to safety and environmentally sustainable practices with profitable production.
“Mr Arena along with Casey Cooper a beekeeper from Tinga; Jock Nivison a mixed farmer from Walcha and Peter Matuszny a free range egg farmer from Taree are all clearly hard working and innovative leaders who are passionate about farming,” Mr Schoen said. “Its primary producers like this year’s finalists who ensure the food and fibre we all get to enjoy are of a high standard.” The annual NSW Farmer of the Year award recognises the best farmers in NSW, focusing on
their agricultural management skills, their use of innovation, profitability, environmental sustainability and community involvement. The Award is proudly presented by the NSW Department of Primary Industries and NSW Farmers, with support from The Land and SafeWork NSW. THERE was no Christmas goodwill for Nelson Bay residents Bettina and Paul Brooke following a collision involving their white Falcon Ute. Paul Brooke returned to his Austral Street residence on Tuesday 13 December to find the vehicle had sustained significant driver’s side damage. Fortunately the vehicle was unoccupied at the time, but there was no note left with the offender’s contact details. The crash, which occurred between 10 and 11.30am, has
resulted in the couple’s “Ute” being out of action in the busy lead up to Christmas. For Bettina, the damage and inconvenience pales in comparison to what could have happened had the car been occupied. “A car can be replaced,” she said. “But that could have been one of our children.” Austral Street, Nelson Bay is a 50 km/h zone, but Mr Brooke indicated that not everyone obeys that limit. The street provides access to the Austral Street Shopping Village and is also a bus route as well as a shortcut to Tomaree Community Hospital (formerly called

2016 ABS Labour Force statistics confirm that females are far more likely to work part-time than males (31% compared with 6.8%), but finding the ideal parttime job can be difficult. Joanne Hoy needed a job that offered flexibility for her two children with special needs. “I’ve been within the dance industry for 13 years. I wanted to do this five years ago, but that’s when [my son] was diagnosed with autism,” she said. The vision was put on the backburner, but ongoing discussions resulted in both women realising that it could be achieved if they worked together. Skills were pooled, Nelson Bay premises secured and they got down to business.

Although Austral Street is wide, there is no directional dividing line. “People drive in the middle of the road,” Mr Brooke said. “This is about the care of our children and the elderly. There are no paths and [some residents] use mobility scooters.” “It is an issue of awareness and local people looking after local people,” Mrs Brooke added.

THE NSW Government has provided $30,000 in funding for the development of a Newcastle Airport master plan which will drive airport upgrades and sustainability over the next 20 years. Parliamentary Secretary

A DESIRE for work/life balance and unique individual challenges has resulted in two local mums joining together to make that dream a reality. Anna Bay mums Jodi Warburton and Joanne Hoy met through their children’s shared interest in dancing. Both were looking for work, but it was difficult to find a job that would fit in with their circumstances. For Jodi, a medical condition that prevents her from driving limited her options. “It impacts on the sort of work I can apply for,” she said. “Most of my employment has been home-based or voluntary; I really wanted part-time work that would get me out of the house.”
significant economic driver for businesses in the Hunter and the nearby regions, generating jobs and economic growth,” Mr MacDonald said. A 2014 Economic Impact Assessment (EIA) found that the airport precinct supports at least 1,485 jobs, plus $856 million in business activity. “This funding from the NSW Government will help to ensure the airport can cater for the increasing travel demand in the years to come, as well as providing certainty on the future of the Hunter economy for the local community,” Mr MacDonald added. Business, John Barilaro, said the master plan will include analysis of market demand, airport capacity, ground use and environmental planning, along with land use proposals to help plan for the future. “The NSW Government recognises the importance of Newcastle Airport as the largest regional airport in NSW, with 1.2 million passengers passing through each year and the potential for further growth in the coming years,” Mr Barilaro said. “The Hunter Regional Plan 2036 identified Newcastle Airport as a key asset to link with international markets, so it’s important that a master plan is delivered.”
The name was the easiest part: Jo’s Dance Wear & Supplies. Their shared commitment is obvious. “We can’t do it without each other,” Jodi said. The aim has also been to help parents in similar circumstances. “We struggled with getting into Newcastle. For working parents it’s hard to get supplies within work hours. Now we are able to help the parents here,” Joanne said. The business opened in October. Jodi and Joanne balance the workload so they can fulfil their outside commitments. “We are independent suppliers and not affiliated with any dance studio,” Joanne said. “We are very keen to hear from parents so we can make sure that we are meeting the needs of our local community,” Jodi added.
Last year the NSW Government provided $855,000 to support the fit-out of the international processing areas of the Terminal Expansion project. “We also granted $11.1 million in funding for the Terminal Expansion project which increased terminal capacity for additional domestic services, creating more than 80 direct jobs across both projects,” Mr Barilaro added. “These future developments play a major role in boosting the Hunter’s presence as Australia’s largest regional economy and we are committed to supporting the community along the way.”

Journey of the Mark M boat By Mandy ELLIS
JACOB Parmax of Salamander Bay, who works at Albatross Marina, Lemon Tree Passage, was able to give some insight into the brief history of the Mark M boat which has recently been brought to Soldiers Point where it has been disassembled. “The Mark M was initially moored at the Marina around March/April of this year, it sank not long after we asked the owner to turn off the generator as we were receiving noise complaints from local residents,” Mr Parmax said. Albatross Marina invested a lot of time and money in an attempt to refloat the trawler
unsuccessfully, having to hire two 20 tonne chain blocks to assist their 15 metre barge to right itself. Staff had to plan and wait for the right tide to bring their barge back to shore in the correct position. Mr Parmax said, “I am disappointed the boat was not removed sooner, it created a serious environmental hazard, and along with the fire brigade, we had to use three complete oil/diesel spill kits, which are a ‘one use only’ piece of equipment. Even with the fire brigade’s assistance there was still some leakage.” A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson told News Of The Area, “Roads
and Maritime Services arranged for the removal of the 19 metre trawler ‘Mark M’ after it sank on a commercial mooring off Lemon Tree Passage at Port Stephens on Sunday 20 November.” “Roads and Maritime boomed the vessel to contain pollution, deployed a yellow flashing light to alert other vessels to the navigation hazard and contacted the owner to have the trawler removed,” the RMS spokesperson said. “Due to inaction by the owner, Roads and Maritime arranged for the refloat and removal of the vessel last Thursday via Soldiers Point boat ramp using a 250 tonne crane. The owner will be billed for these costs.”

Dear Jasminda,
I’m thinking of changing hairdressers, but the lady who currently does my hair has kids at the same child care centre and we bump into each other regularly. How do I explain it to her? WT, Tea Gardens OKAY, WT, let’s just think this through a bit more carefully. People from major cities can get away with changing their hairdresser as frequently as they change their car. You know, they start with a Toyota because they want to do that charming ‘Oh What a Feeling’ jump in the air with little Mimi and Sebastian, Jules the au pair, and Shih Tzu Teddy. Then along comes ‘Das Auto’ and, well, what woman wouldn’t swoon from the accent, not to mention the emission-cheating diesel fumes. I digress, WT, as I do when I get a question that raises the hairs on my fashionable new lotus flower undercut. Let me give it to you as straight as a vodka shot from the Tea Gardens Hotel Motel on Trivia Night. You don’t live in the metropolis, my poor misguided angel. Changing hairdressers in a small coastal community is social suicide. It’s the regional equivalent to clubbing a baby seal. Did she remove your entire eyebrow during the complimentary brow wax? Did she give you a blue rinse instead of caramel highlights? Those things mean nothing, nothing, WT. Hair grows back. Reputations don’t. Remember what you shared about Jimmy the mechanic when she lulled you into a false sense of security during the Argan oil treatment? What about the ‘between you and me’ whispers relating to Maria at number 93 as she GHDed you to perfection? Those acrylic talons aren’t just for massaging your temples you know. Hell hath no fury like a hairdresser scorned. You’ve been warned.

A WARM, slightly breezy Sunday evening at Fly Point greeted the Bay for Fly Point’s Traditional Christmas Carols. “Carols at Fly Point has become such a family tradition and social experience,” Emmi De-Vries of Corlette, told News Of The Area. “We moved here five years ago and knew no one, now, five years later, and it’s like one big family get together,” she said. Her daughter, nineyear-old Anique De-Vries, performed twice, once with St Philip’s Choir and a solo rendition of I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas. After her solo performance, Anique said, “I was so surprised when I was told I would be doing a solo; I was so nervous before my performance and when on the stage, I still feel, wow, I just did that, I love everything about Carols night.” Kira De-Vries, seven, said, “I love the fireworks, Santa and just everything!” Katrin Eriksson of Shoal Bay said, “Ever since moving to the Bay, this has become a family tradition

Into the future and beyond By Jewell DRURY WE come to the end of our fourpart series on St Philip’s Christian College, Port Stephens and at this stage we see the College propel into a new season of growth and success. Last year the College was in a fortunate position with a HSC Student, Brandon Smith, making the “HSC All Rounder” list. The Board of Studies rewards students with the honour of being on the “All Rounder” list if they obtain a Band 6 across 10 units. This year the College has the pleasure of announcing back-toback success with the news of Grace Kim being on the All Rounder list for 2016, joining the top students of NSW in this honour. “It is a great encouragement to the staff at St Philip’s to see students perform at that level,” Principal Dr Tim Petterson told Bay News Of The Area. “Even more satisfying is seeing students achieve a higher level of success than they previously thought they would,” Dr Petterson said. “Helping students to realise their potential is a key driver of what we do here at the College,” he added. When it comes to success, the college is seeing many new plans unfold including the opening of “Narnia” a Christian Preschool and

Early Learning Centre, scheduled for opening on January 16, 2017. With the motivation of the College being whole-of-life educators, Narnia will educate the children from 0-5 years. This means St Philip’s Christian College now has the opportunity to educate the children from 0-18 years old.
In 2017, the College has plans to begin the construction of a state-of-the-art building designed specifically to meet the needs of Senior Students. At a cost of 7.5 million dollars, the three-storey building will be situated behind the current basketball court. The top level will consist entirely
of a study common room for the Year 11 & 12 students with panoramic views over the surrounding bushland. The second level will consist of eight senior classrooms. The ground level will contain a Café and a two-storey lecture theatre equal in comparison to any modern university as well as an undercover seating area.

“There is a master plan written for the next season of the College and that is to accommodate 1200 students over the next 10 years,” Dr Petterson said. “It is something we are very excited about not just for ourselves but for the families of Port Stephens,” Dr Petterson added. One thing for sure is that the best is yet to come in the life of the College, and it will be wonderful as a local community, to be eyewitnesses to its journey.

Boxing Day Blues, Brews & BBQ’s Festival
By Jewell DRURY MURRAY’S Brewery is celebrating its eleventh birthday these school holidays with the release of two limited edition beers and a free Blues concert. Murray’s once a year Mango Beer and Anniversary Ale 11 will also be unveiled on 26 December as part of this year’s Boxing Day Blues, Brews & BBQ’s Festival. The festival is a tribute to flavour, fine tunes and family fun. It will be a great opportunity to sample a range of Murray’s medalwinning craft beer styles and flavours, as well as taste and enjoy a great selection of easy drinking local and regional wines. Local favourite Brien McVernon will perform the blues from midday with a free concert in the beautiful vine and eucalypt grounds. The Brewery’s undercover facilities will ensure that events will proceed rain, hail or shine. Brewery owner Murray

Howe is expecting a new release interactive kids’ game is going to be a huge hit with the kids. “The space for kids to play is one of the most consistent compliments we receive,” Murray Howe said. “We’ve launched “Pirate Bob’s Scavenger Hunt”, an interactive mobile app that takes the kids on a random adventure searching for treasure on our property.” “You can find it on the App Store or Google Play, then you can sit back, relax and watch the kids wear themselves out!” he said. Parents can enjoy some delicious summer food sensations with some great kids’ meals available too. Murray’s Brewery and Port Stephens Winery is very family friendly, and children are welcome. The day begins at 10am until 6pm with the concert from 12 noon. It will be free entry but bookings are essential. Contact Murrays Brewing Co for more details on 4982 6411.

ANOTHER medal haul for the students at Him-Do Tae Kwon Do, Salamander Bay. Hamish Clark, 7, and Reg Hyde, 19, both brought home gold medals to add to their personal collection. Hamish won his gold at the Australian Tae Kwon Do NSW States Championships in sparring and told News Of The Area, “I was excited to win and felt good about myself.” Hamish currently has nine medals and has been doing Tae Kwon Do for three years. “I am proud of myself and Master Ron is a great
instructor,” he said. Reg won one gold in poomsae and 2 in sparring at the same event. He was an active martial arts student when he lived in the Philippines, however only resumed in March 2016 in Australia where he started from a white belt and has progressed to a blue one. Reg said, “My motivation is a love for the sport which has been with me from a young age, I have always wanted to do tournaments and my next goal will be competing at National level and eventually overseas when I reach my black belt.” After searching far and wide, Reg said, “I feel this is

The organisation began more than 140 years ago and now has 400 million members worldwide. Mothers’ Union meets the 2nd Friday of every month at 10am at the All Saints Anglican Church, Nelson Bay. Calling future Cadets By Jewell DRURY IF you are aged between 13-17 years and have completed your SRC (Surf Rescue Certificate) or Bronze Medallion Award, you are invited to join the cadets at Birubi Point Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) on Friday afternoons at 5pm. Most club members begin in Nippers and then advance to the next stage called Cadets. However, Cadets is a very good place to begin as a future Lifesaver. “The whole focus is to have fun while practicing their skills,” Sam Faragher, Youth Development Coordinator, told Bay News Of The Area. “Cadets is also conducted in order to help the members remain focused and remain active in the SLSC into their adulthood,” Ms Faragher said. The Cadets meet at Birubi Point Surf Life Saving Club to practice board paddling, board starts and gain confidence in the surf in a fun supervised environment.
www.newsofthearea.com.au
The Cadet training is supervised and conducted by Club members with many years’ experience in Surf Life Saving. Parents are also welcome to join in or help with the barbecue. After training, it is a social time where the cadets usually have a chat and a sausage sizzle and plan any future events. Sometimes the venues and times change and include a paddle at Nelson Bay or Shoal Bay for a change of scenery and conditions. In the past the Cadets have enjoyed activities which have included a day out at the Tree Tops Adventure Park, Battlezone Laser Skirmish and movie nights. Throughout the winter months the cadets have the opportunities to stay in touch via a Pizza/Movie night or a quick paddle depending on the water temperatures. For further information on joining the Cadets please contact Sam Faragher on 0423585051 or via email: samanthafaragher23@ gmail.com
