Valentines For the Young at Heart
By Marian SAMPSON
q Kerrie Cordiner, Meryl Miller, and Cathy Lindsay serving up some sweet treats on Valentine’s Day.
THE Probus Club of Port Stephens proved that you don’t have to be young just young at heart to enjoy Valentine’s Day. Love was in the air with members gathering at Bagnalls Beach Reserve for a Valentine’s Day celebration in the cool shade of the late afternoon. A feast of chicken and champagne and other goodies were enjoyed with chocolate hearts and cakes served by Kerrie and Sylvia who organized the Love-In. Even the resident kookaburras swooped in for a nibble. Ann Gibson, the Clubs Publicity Officer, told News Of The Area, “Diana and Ron Souter entertained with appropriate love songs and a few would-be poets chipped
in with some lovers verse, and Lesley Palagy did a fine rendition from The ‘Sentimental Bloke’. “All in all, a couple of hours of fun and friendship,” she said. The Club’s activity calendar for the year is being finalised and it is going to be a busy one, yet again with something for everyone. Participation is the key to making new friends and enjoying your retirement. The Probus Club of Port Stephens meets at the Nelson Bay Bowling Club, 9.30am on the second Thursday of the month. TOMAREE High School student Tyler Regan with his project Orchard School Systems was highly successful taking out third place in the category; “Best creative thinking for a business idea or an existing business run by a student” in the Future Business Minds Project. The program came about due to the Hunter Region of Local Chambers of Commerce being keen to create an environment where young people can be visionary and cultivate business ideas. The Future Business Minds project was supported by some 50 local organisations, with Port Stephens Council one of the supporters. More than 200 people attended the awards function where the region’s future
business minds were recognised and Tyler Regan and Dakota Nicolson were presented with the award. You can check out the pitch that the students prepared for the awards at vimeo. com/247259787 Awards Coordinator, Duncan Burck, said “the Hunter’s business future looks very bright. “The Awards attracted more than 22 entries.” He believes that each of these entries demonstrated great insight and innovation. “It is really exciting to see how the next generation of business minds see opportunities today, that will shape the way we do business in the future,” Mr Burck said. There are already plans in place to continue and expand the program in 2018.
The verdict is that the future of the Hunter’s business community is in great hands. Janet Dobbie of Varley Group

Betty Rowe told News Of The Area, “The secret to their marriage comes down to faith in Christ, as it is he who has kept us day by day.” She believes that she and her husband have also had great support from family and friends throughout their

Allan and Betty will be celebrating their 70th Anniversary with Family, which means that they will be surrounded by their three sons, Bruce, Geoffrey and Phillip, their seven surviving grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. They will also be joined by their honorary grandchild from the United States who they opened their home to in 1988 as she is flying back out to Australia for this very special occasion. Dear Jasminda,
OPINION Dear News Of The Area, HOW distressed we was on Sunday afternoon 18th February to see a marlin being hacked to pieces at the waters edge at Little Beach between the boat ramp and the swimming
My daughter has recently purchased tickets to Groovin’ the Moo. She’s only 14 and I wonder if this is an age-appropriate event. Should I allow her to attend? Should I go as well?
IN THE NAME OF SPORT area, the water red with the poor creatures blood very near to families enjoying a swim. Almost as bad was the fact that parents were taking their children down to have a look!!! Imagine the outcry if the same was done to one of the
A concerned Mrs LK, Medowie
Dear Mrs LK,
rabbits in the caravan park or to a kangaroo on the golf course. Why are fish treated differently to other animals?
Groovin’ the Moo sounds pretty placid. When I say those words I imagine a small group of happy hippies in their 60s, blissed out in a meadow with some cows, a flute and a tambourine. They are singing songs such as Sounds of Silence and California Dreamin’. Maybe they are smoking some cow dung, but that’s about as radical as it gets. They can’t cause too much mischief because they keep tripping over their flares and falling over. As the sun sets, they sit in a circle singing Kumbaya and drinking kombucha. Of course if that was the reality of Groovin’ the Moo, your 14-year-old daughter wouldn’t want to attend. So think about what she would like to attend. I’d imagine it would be an event with hundreds of young people full of euphoria listening to suggestive lyrics, making sweaty human pyramids, moshing and getting lit (I’m not sure what getting lit is, but it can’t be good thing). The positive in all of this is that these events are well organised with lots of security. There will also be a whole lot of parents, just like you, Mrs LK, who will attend the event wearing some sort of camouflage to spy on your offspring to make sure they are safe. And the 14-year-old kids will be thinking: What are all these hippy has-beens doing at our event? Didn’t they get over all of this at Woodstock? Why are they gate crashing? And now they are dancing! And now they are moshing! And now they are getting lit! Aaaaaargh, Sebastian, is that your father dancing with my mother to Grinspoon? Oh my God, she’s getting up on his shoulders. My eyes are burning with embarrassment. Let’s get out of here and watch a movie. This is so hideous.

Councillor calls for defibrillators
AT the upcoming Port Stephens Council meeting on 27 February 2018, Council will consider a Notice of Motion proposed by Cr Giacomo Arnott, West Ward Councillor, to facilitate the purchase and installation of defibrillators at sports venues across Port Stephens. At a recent West Ward Sports Council meeting, Sports people from all sports and all Clubs joined together to support defibrillators being installed at each sports complex, to ensure that if and when they are needed, they can be accessed and potentially save lives. The discussion emanated from a recent incident at Lakeside Sports Complex, where the quick-thinking
actions of local cricketers ensured that a defibrillator was sourced from the nearby Lakeside Leisure Centre for a player who had suffered a heart attack. Medowie Clubs already benefit from this safety feature, with all Clubs currently fitted with a defibrillator machine, and it would a fantastic asset to see this same statistic carried across all Clubs in Port Stephens. “Council will be asked to work on a 50/50 split with each Ward’s Sports Council to facilitate the funding and installation of defibrillators at sports complexes such as Lakeside Sports Complex, Tomaree Sports Complex, and Mallabula Sports Complex.” “Working with Council staff, twelve sites have been identified in the Local Government Area
that would provide maximum coverage for as many Sports and Clubs as possible and I’m proud to be part of a Council that can play such a crucial role in protecting lives and assisting local sportspeople.” “For the amount of money Council is being asked to give, we really are making the most of ratepayer dollars, making this a common-sense move,” he said. Interested members of the public are welcome to attend these public meetings. Residents can also take advantage of the brand new webcasting of council meetings, available live on the Council website when meetings are held.
Carpe diem, Jasminda.

A Regenerated Anna Bay
By Marian SAMPSON
THE Anna Bay and Birubi Hall Community Landcare Group (ABBHCLG) is dedicated to improving the environment of the parks in the Anna Bay area. While they have been delivering some wonderful outcomes like the new garden at the entrance to Anna Bay opposite the Primary School on Gan Gan Road, many locals may not realise that the parks and gardens are delivered by this group of community volunteers. On 24 February, the group are holding an open day and working bee at the Birubi Community Hall which will see the volunteers and the local Scouts along with members of the community, working on improving the gardens around both the Community hall and the Scout hall. The day promises to be a great learning experience for families, with participants learning about sustainable planting and securing native endemic species in the area. Carl Boardman Deputy Chairman of the ABBHCLG told News Of The Area, “We have been working on planting koala corridors and ensuring that areas that
BAYNews Of The Area approved, funding is sought. “If you want projects to go ahead, which are focused on improving the community, creating a better environment and habitat for koalas, and other natives we need people in the Anna Bay community to help,” he said. The community is encouraged to come along to the Open Day and see how ABBHCLG is actively engaging with the Scouts to improve the space, through the planting of long term sustainable species.
The Scouts and Working Bee volunteers will be gaining valuable knowledge about local species, the need and ways to prepare soil prior to planting and how to create a sustainable asset. With the two sites planted with similar species there will be an improved look and feel for the two properties. The Group is giving away 50 native plants at the Open Day which they are hoping many local families will attend.
