Helping Hands Needed By Marian SAMPSON

HELPING hands are needed to keep the Bay’s cemeteries looking good all year round. The Council’s Tomaree Cemeteries Committee is involved with Nelson Bay, Birubi and Anna Bay Cemeteries. The need to memorialise the loss of loved ones through the cemeteries is one which meets the emotional needs of many in our community. It is important to these people in their time of grief, or reflection, that the grounds are

maintained and the cemetery looks well cared for. Volunteers make a big difference to the region and can be seen rolling up their sleeves in many different capacities. Ron Swan past Mayor of Port Stephens and volunteer with the Councils 355C Tomaree Cemeteries Committee told News Of The Area, “It is a feeling of great satisfaction to be involved and contribute ‘in the good old fashioned way’ to the

betterment and upkeep of our local area. “We take a Pride in Port Stephens.” The cemeteries committee meets a minimum of 3 times per year. At these meetings they formulate financial reporting and formalities, and additionally conduct working bees. “Generally the meetings run for around three quarters of an hour and are a get-together over a cup of coffee, when convenient for members,” he said.

Port Stephens Councillors are represented on most committees with the Mayor Ryan Palmer and Councillor Jamie Abbott, who are both active members of the Tomaree Cemeteries Committee. To ensure the safety of anyone participating in working bees, a short induction is conducted by council staff. At the moment the committee is seeking a person prepared to assist with the secretarial, notes, which is minimal. Anyone wanting to get involved can contact Ron Swan on 0418 495 336 or Peter Sherriff 0402 360 773. There are approx 45 council 355c committees ranging right across the local government area, including Tidy Towns, Hall committees, Reserves and parks, Landcare groups, and sports councils. The benefits of volunteering are well recognised and include providing people with purpose, connection to community and positive social interaction.

munity the upgrade to Apex Park will see improved connections between the waterfront and Marina precinct and the town CBD. Apex Park is set to see an amphitheatre on the hillside, new lighting, with wider footpaths and stairway to the foreshore. Meanwhile Robinson Reserve at Anna Bay will receive $700,000 going towards a new district scale playground, skate-park, Aboriginal Place interpretative signage, BBQ facilities, accessible amenities block, native landscaping and supporting park infrastructure.

Catherine Cusack told News Of The Area, “This One Million Dollars in funding will rejuvenate these public places for residents and visitors.” The funds are through the Stronger Country Communities funding program, which is part of the NSW Government’s $1.3 billion Regional Growth Fund, designed to improve economic growth and productivity in regional communities. Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “Council is working hard to get projects implemented for the community.” He believes that Apex Park is a divide between the CBD and the foreshore and that this work will bring them closer together, through holding concerts and markets. It’s about creating connections,” he said. Councillors Abbott, Smith, Nell and Dunkley all thanked Catherine Cusack and the NSW Government for the funding which will see the projects de-

with no transition to height from the residential area to the CBD the town would be overshadowed from the Western side particularly in winter. David Shoebridge told News Of The Area, “If the development proceeds with 10 storey development throughout the town the amphitheatre of trees will be gone,

creating an urban canyon.” He believes that it is imperative that after the change to the Crown Land Act last year which allows for the transfer of Crown Land to councils that something is put into place to ensure spaces like the Nelson Bay Foreshore parkland shown as two storey in the Nelson Bay Strategy are protected and stay as community land. At present, after transfer

from Crown Land to council community land it is possible for councils to rezone land and sell it off. “The Greens are requesting a caveat be placed on all Crown Land transferred to local councils so that these spaces cannot be sold or rezoned.” The issue of the Nelson Bay Strategy and separate LEP which are on display is that under the proposed LEP

clause 4.6 has no limitations and is LGA wide. There is potential for Council to add to clause 4.6 to ensure that buildings do not exceed certain heights, in specific areas and have design excellence and offer significant public benefit to justify any variation to the development over planning issues such as height. He believes that 10 storeys across the whole of the CBD as outlined in the current strategy on exhibition is an example of bad planning. “It is out of keeping with the character of the town.” The LEP once adopted will be valid across Port Stephens. “Residents should be sceptical of policy that is LGA wide,” he said. Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “ I’d welcome a discussion with any visiting member of parliament to get the facts around strategies that council has worked with community on over a long period of time.” “Members of the Greens have told me openly that they are running a scare campaign on heights at Nelson Bay,” he said.

Councillor Abbott said, “I am excited about the $80,000 amphitheatre for Apex Park and have a vision of seeing Friday night concerts being held similar to events in Taronga Park Zoo.” Rory Milne a long term trader in the Nelson Bay CBD and member of the Tomaree business Chamber told News Of The Area, “I think this is a wonderful achievement of Council to get the funding. Apex Park is a significant part of Nelson Bay and this will be well received,” he said. Councillor Sarah Smith said, “Anna Bay is close to my heart, improving the town with this project will see residents and visitors very excited.” John Nell commented “It’s great to finally start the rejuvenation of Apex Park, the community has asked and we can now do lots of work thanks to these two grants.” Work is expected to commence in the second half of the year.

DISTRIBUTION & COVERAGE:

Station hits 25.0 PORT Stephens FM is celebrating its 25th year of operation following its inaugural broadcast all so long ago on the 1 April, 1993. Back then, the studio was a caravan parked on the top of Scott Circuit in Salamander Bay, with a meagre output of just 30 Watts. To help get the Station started, volunteers sold raffle tickets in Nelson Bay CBD and Salamander Shopping Centre to raise money for the purchase of the muchneeded equipment. The first presenters were the late Benni Lind (Founder/President and the

first Life Member), Margot Anderson (Secretary) and Leyton Archer (Sales Representative). Port Stephens FM has been responsible for launching many careers in radio, the first being Leyton who went on to be a popular 2NUR FM presenter with a career that continues in the industry to this day. Within twelve months of its launch, a permanent studio was established in the Nelson Bay CBD, with broadcasting being limited to just one week a month. In 2000, the station moved to its current location in the Port

Stephens Community Centre, next to Tomaree Library, in Salamander Bay. With a significant boost to its transmitting power, the station’s reach now extends from Newcastle west to Medowie and further west to Raymond Terrace depending on receivers, broadcasting 24 hours per day with 1000 Watts. Paddy Twohill, President of the Port Stephens FM Inc, said, “The station runs entirely with volunteers and after our very humble beginnings, we now have two state-of-the-art studios, a production studio and administration office in the Centre.” “Most importantly, we continue to go from strengthto-strength.”

Dear Jasminda,

No Comply no Wi-Fi PORT Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer last week joined Port Stephens Duty MLC, Catherine Cusack to announce that Council has been awarded $60,000 by the NSW Government for an innovative plan to tackle litter using Wi-Fi. The ‘Pop Shove it’ in the Bin, if you ‘No Comply’ no Wi-Fi project will use a positive behavior reward system to encourage skaters at Boomerang Park, Raymond Terrace to do the right thing with their litter. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says this is a new and exciting approach to dealing with a problem like litter. “Port Stephens Council is incredibly innovative in the litter prevention space, and this Grant will allow us to trial a new approach of rewarding people who do the right thing and look after our environment.

“As the name suggests, the trial will deliver free, solar generated Wi-Fi internet through the bin as reward for putting litter in it,” Mayor Palmer said. “It’s an exciting idea, which if successful, could be rolled out to other parts of our region,” he added. Council Rangers will regularly patrol the area and will distribute in-car litter bags to target littering from vehicles visiting the park, while Permanent Tosser! signage will be installed to promote the anti-litter message. The new litter campaign will also be integrated into the local primary schools’ waste education programs. Port Stephens Council’s initiative is one of 18 projects successfully funded through round 4 of the Litter Prevention Grants program.

Graham Oborn told News Of The Area, “Learning to sail gives young people confidence, they learn life skill and about our waterways in a fun and safe environment at the Sailing School. “This has been a wonderful opportunity for these students at the sailing school and we hope to be able to repeat the scholarships again if we get enough support from the community,” he said. NewsOfTheArea.com.au

In the past week I have had three people bump into me because they are on their mobile phones with their heads down while walking. It is becoming a hazard to walk along a path or a supermarket aisle these days. Mrs ND, Raymond Terrace Dear Mrs ND,

There are so many hazards out there. Paths are loaded with dogs on extendable leads, people dawdling in their activewear, cyclists with bells that scare the bejesus out of us, nannas on motor scooters, stray toddlers, yogis practising mindfulness, roller skating enthusiasts, teenagers carrying hottedup sound systems on their shoulders, and various other combinations that are destined to end in a major collision. Supermarket aisles are just as bad. You have shop assistants stacking shelves, merchandisers doing stock rotation, toddlers lying on the ground in full tantrum mode, mothers’ groups having a weekly meeting (their prams creating an impenetrable barricade), unidentified liquid spills, sulking husbands, frazzled shoppers, trolleys that only veer in one direction due to dodgy wheels, and on it goes. Now, add to the mix the ever-growing number of individuals who have their heads permanently bowed, as though praying to their Smartphones, and every outing is a catastrophe. You can try clapping very loudly before the collision takes place. From experience this works quite well, even though people will look at you as though you are a bit of a loony. Or else walk and shop in the early hours, because you can bet that these poor, misguided phone addicts will be getting some shut-eye to soothe their damaged retinas. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Jason Paris is a musical tsunami like no other. Is it his Freddie Mercurystyle showmanship, working the crowd into a frenzy? Or his mellow tones, layering a chilled vibe over the whole audience? Jason is an extraordinary pianist, putting on a real

show for the crowd. He possesses an extremely impressive four-octave voice that is both powerful and sensitive. Few performers can carry off everything from Queen to ABBA in the original key, but Jason does exactly that. With his Elton – The Young Years show, Jason has established himself as a performer of excellence, athletic, power-

ful and emotional. Whether he’s filling auditoriums or pubs, Jason stuns young and not-so-young audiences alike. When seeing Jason perform, you can be guaranteed that your audience will be completely satisfied. Ready to assist your business! office@perpetualbookkeeping.com.au

By Marian SAMPSON FOUR local students have been awarded scholarships to learn to sail thanks to a local family. Locals Freddie Gravenor, Tilly Gravenor, Emily Brill, Chad Butterworth are all undertaking the eight week course that has been made possible by the generous financial support of a local benefactor. The aim is to encourage young students to participate in the sport of sailing. Four students have enrolled for the 8 week minimum sessions, which will conclude by the presentation of a Start Sailing 1 certificate by the Australian Sailing accredited instructor Graham Oborn.
