Beach Accessible for Everyone

IT was a day for all abilities at Fingal Beach on Sunday with Push Mobility matting making access from the concrete path into the water possible for people of all abilities.

Andy Fielding who is blind and has other mobility issues was wheeled down to the water and also took a turn in the mobichair with floatation devices.

It was two thumbs up for Andy who test drove the new floating wheelchairs recently purchased by Ability Links for Port Stephens beaches.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says it’s a fantastic initiative that is being launched in time for the summer beach season.

“Our Accessible Beach Day is an opportunity to see these brand new chairs in action! They will soon be available for anyone to use at Fingal, One Mile and Birubi beaches,” he said.

“With the help of Ability Links, this Council is working hard to improve the quality of life for people living with a disability across Port Stephens.

“We’re lucky to have many beautiful beaches and this initiative will ensure that everyone will have the opportunity to enjoy

FROM a humble beginning some five years ago practising in the Senior Citizens Centre, the ‘Lemon Eukalypts’ ukulele orchestra have branched out.

They now regularly perform at public functions as well as train and entertain at their new home base in the Tilligerry Habitat.

VIETNAM Veteran and Port Stephens resident, Mr Doug Sanderson will this Saturday, 24 November speak at a Men’s Breakfast about his experiences as a young soldier.

Hosted by St Francis Anglican Church the bush church on Brocklesby Road, Mr Sanderson will share his testimony.

All men are invited to attend the breakfast.

Joining in 1963, Mr Sanderson told News Of The Area, “After basic training, I was allocated to the Military Engineers.”

“I enjoyed my training, especially the explosives

part!”

“I got sent to Sydney Harbour, to Chowder Bay.” In 1965, Australia’s involvement in Vietnam was looming to move beyond the military advisors who had been there since 1962.

The escalation saw Doug selected to go to Vietnam.

“I had to volunteer, which I agreed to do,” Doug said.

Doug was deployed with 3 Field Troop and was attached to the US 73rd Airborne.

His deployment was in the first wave to be sent over, before the main Task Force.

When Doug was handed live ammunition on his arrival to Vietnam he said, “I thought, this is getting real, I am 19 years old and suddenly I realised the responsibility of

Upcycled Coffee

YOU can’t buy happiness, but you can buy coffee, and that’s pretty close.

Salamander Bay Recycle Centre has added their own little trailer of happiness, with the introduction of their very own upcycled coffee van.

In true recycle centre fashion, the coffee van is a renovated vintage trailer, brought back to life and purpose by ‘new local’ Bradley Cox, who has made Port Stephens his home.

Bradley Cox originally hails from the Northern Beaches in Sydney, but

moved to Port Stephens two years ago.

He has owned several successful business, including restaurants in Sydney and Noosa - one of which even won the NSW Restaurant of the Year.

Bradley Cox told News Of The Area, “While renovating the vintage trailer, I spent a lot of time at the recycle centre, and after meeting the General Manager Gerard McClafferty, I decided that I wanted to be part of the community service that the centre offered.”

The van opened to the public, with a wonderful response immediately from

the community.

You can now support the work of the Salamander Recycle Centre, and all they do for our community, whilst enjoying a coffee and a sweet treat from Bradley’s Van. The Van is already operating 7 days a week from 9am to 3pm daily serving coffee, drinks and homemade treats.

The recycle centre has fast become a place that is a true shopping experience, not just a quick visit to rifle through boxes of donated second hand items.

TOMAREE Neighbourhood Centre are holding a Christmas raffle with a difference.

The proceeds of their raffle will go directly to those most in need at this time of year - people experiencing homelessness, and to continue to help support families and individuals in the community who are in crisis.

The aim of the fundraiser is to provide people in the local community experiencing homelessness with funds for transport, to be able to attend appointments at The Department of Housing in Newcastle and to continue to provide food hampers to people experiencing homelessness and disadvantaged members of our community.

Currently across Australia 1/200 people are experiencing homelessness.

Tonight 116, 4727 people across the country will be homeless, everyday 250 people are turned away from crisis centres across the country.

Clare Saunders from Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre told News Of The Area, “Through our work with families and individuals at the neighbourhood centre, we have seen an increase in our clients experiencing homelessness and poverty.”

“We want to continue to do the work we do, and increase the services we can offer these people and families, so that this statistic goes down instead of up.”

Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre currently assists people experiencing homelessness and also families and individuals who are disadvantaged in our local community.

Clare said “We provide our clients with food hampers and assistance with referral to appropriate services.”

“We are seeing an increase in client’s visiting the centre and unfortunately at times our food pantry runs low.”

“We currently do not have the funds to provide clients with assistance to travel into Newcastle to attend appointments at The Department of Housing - something that seems so simple, but is so important.”

You can help the staff and volunteers of this wonderful service to be able to do their job over this incredibly busy period by purchasing a raffle ticket.

There are nearly forty prizes, ranging from vouchers for local businesses, through to scuba diving packs, complete dinners out and experiences across Port Stephens and Newcastle.

There’s a new hand at the Helm RICHARD Tyler is the new commander of Lemon Tree Passage Marine Rescue. He replaces Richard Osborne OAM who has stood down after 35 years of service to the Coast Guard and Marine Rescue. He will continue to serve in a non executive role.

Richard, who is also a life member of Tilligerry Rural Fire Service, was awarded his OAM for his unstinting devotion to the two volunteer services over such a long time.

He was quite taken aback when a 35-Year Service clasp was added to his long service ribbon and was asked to cut a cake with his name on it at a recent meeting.

“I’ve enjoyed the training, the camaraderie and seeing the transition from the Coast Guard to the newly formed Marine Rescue”, he said.

THE concept of Street Libraries is gaining in momentum and popularity around Port Stephens and the Myall Coast, with News Of The Area coming across two new locations to add to the Stroud Street Library we reported on a few months ago.

The two new libraries that have sprung up now bring Medowie and Raymond Terrace into the program.

The Raymond Terrace Street Library location is that of a private residence across from Riverside Park in Raymond Terrace, attached to their front fence.

The owner of the property and constructor of the street library, Annie Woodard-Knight, told News Of The Area, “I became interested in the concept of a Street Library after seeing some on our travels and borrowing books from them.”

“We live in a beautiful part of Raymond Terrace that has lots of passing travellers and community groups using the nearby park, so I wanted to contribute to the fabric of our town, and as I had a backlog of books this project seemed to fit.”

“I bought the library as a kit and my husband and I were able to construct it using fairly basic tools.”

“I hope that it becomes an asset in the community and that it inspires other people or community groups to put one up,” she said.

Medowie’s brand new Street Library, is a beautiful bright yellow two shelf library constructed by Century 21 Curtis and Blair Medowie.

One of the first to use Medowie’s new Street Library was local author Mel Gole, who has recently returned to live in Medowie.

Mel brought some books to donate to the Library, as well as one of her own books she has written, Who am I? Mel told News Of The Area, “I just moved and I had a lot of books at home, so I’d been looking for what to do with them and Jane’s always been a good friend so I was happy to help.”

“Being an author has given me a great new bunch of friends to make through and with books, so it was special to sneak one of mine in as well.”

“It’s great to do things that give a sense of community, which is one of the reasons I’m so happy to be back in Medowie,” she said.

I’VE given this one some thought and I think the only way to sort it out is to think of drivers on the road as different dog breeds.

Now some drivers are like the Collie or the German Shepherd. They are intelligent, have great levels of concentration, keep their eye on the task at hand, and progress in a thoughtful manner. Other drivers, and I am going to put your wife in this category, are more like the two-year-old Labrador or Boxer.

They race around like lunatics, unable to stay on task, and they veer all over the place as though their mind is constantly wandering to the same beat as their wavering sense of direction. Still, they mean no real harm, though they are an accident waiting to happen. There’s a third category of driver that I would put in the angry, hovering-too-closeto-your-arse box. Think of the Doberman, perhaps the misunderstood Pit Bull, or even the Rottweiler. Now I know I’m generalising here. There are some lovely dogs in all these categories, but there are also ones that would be pretty happy to chew your arm off or tailgate you down a dark alley. Now you, Mr GF, you have to be a Kelpie in this situation.

You need to herd your wife back in the right direction. If she starts veering off course, just set her on the straight and narrow again.

When she pulls up at the roundabout, like a dog pulling up at a tree, or a urine-stained patch of grass, or the back end of another dog, you need to nip her heels, metaphorically speaking, and guide her, gently yet firmly.

Be the Kelpie, Mr GF, and all will be right with the world again.

Dancers on National Stage

A group of talented dancers from Tanilba Bay got a taste of the big city lights and performing on a national stage when they headed interstate recently to compete in a national competition for cheer and dance.

The Elite Diamond Dancers, a small dance studio located in Tanilba Bay, took a group of seven talented and hard working students to the Gold Coast, Queensland to compete at the Aussie Gold International Cheer and Dance Championships.

Bianca Peacock (13), Bindi Steele (13), Amelia Parkes (11), Hollee Pevitt (11), Hannah Coupe (13), Angel Hodson (12) and Braelyn Lawrie (9) were selected to attend this prestigious competition.

This competition attracts studios from across Australia and through New Zealand, so it was a big honour for the Tanilba Bay dancers to attend.

Alarna Grantham from Elite Diamond Dancers told News Of The Area, “We decided in July 2017 that we would be taking a team up to Queensland.”

“These students started training in 2018 and have worked super hard to get to where they are today.”

“Not only did they go to Queensland to compete at Aussie Gold, but they performed at Dreamworld too.”

The girls showed an incredible amount of resilience and teamwork, having to change their entire routine a week out from the competition, due to one of the team members

unfortunately hurting herself at home.

Alarna said, “The girls quickly adjusted to the changes and pushed on like professionals.”

The girls performed one jazz group routine and came second place, missing out on first place by only .2 of a point score.

The girls then performed their jazz group routine at Dreamworld, with a few extra special performances.

Bianca performed two solos.

Bindi, Hollee and Hannah performed one solo each.

Bianca and Bindi also performed their duo together for the crowds.

Congratulations to these Tilligerry Peninsula dancers on such a wonderful achievement.

Indigenous Soldiers honoured

IRRAWANG Public School has created and unveiled an incredible recognition and testament to our Indigenous soldiers this week.

This new ANZAC Memorial space recognises soldiers from many cultures and backgrounds, with space for more stories on their adjacent reflection wall.

Principal of Irrawang Public School, Stacy Mathieson, told News Of The Area, “It is a thank you to all who fought for our country bravely.”

“We have made specific reference to our Aboriginal soldiers who fought equally, but unfortunately weren’t given the recognition and thanks they deserved back home.”

Before World War

I broke out, Aboriginal men, women and children experienced hardship no one should have to endure.

They were not seen as citizens of this country, they had no rights and were treated in a way that still creates trauma, generations on.

At first, Aboriginals were not officially allowed to join the military, although there are many stories of those

who did enlist, with the enlistment officers turning a blind eye to their race.

However, as the war went on, more lives were lost overseas and Australia’s promise of service men to Britain could not be sustained by non-Indigenous soldiers alone.

This prompted the government to officially allow Aboriginals to enlist.

For the first time,

while fighting in a war for a country who did not recognize them as equal, they became part of a team, experiencing equality, mateship, and a sense of camaraderie amongst the other soldiers.

Aboriginal soldiers have spoken about all people in the Army at the time being the same colour: green.

Many Aboriginal soldiers lost their lives and sadly those who did return, returned to the same trauma and hardships in Australia as

Sports Club clears final hurdle AFTER 30 years in the works, the Medowie Sports and Community Club will at last become a reality.

Port Stephens Council approved a funding model during their public meeting last Tuesday with the final hurdle of approving the preferred tender for the development and build of the new facility.

“Stalwart of the Medowie community, and former councillor, Mr Ken Muir and countless others initiated the prospect of a Sport and Community Club in our town,” current Port Stephens Councillor and member of the original steering for the Medowie Sports and Community Club, Chris Doohan told News Of The

Area.

“Years went by, developments happened, and S94 money leaked to everywhere in Port Stephens, but Medowie.”

“Well, it’s our turn.”

The Club, to be located adjacent to the current netball courts and playing field at Ferodale Park, is set to be used by sports groups including netball, Australian rules football, cricket, soccer, touch football, tennis, the Hash House Harriers, futsal, rugby union, Little Athletics, mountain bikers, social golfers, and lawn bowlers.

Community groups looking to use the facility include the RSL, Bridge Club, Lions, CWA, Probus, and Seniors with many more expected to show interest.

SOLDIERS Point Bowler Betty Herbertson was State Selected to play in the Australian Senior Sides Championships held in South Australia in October this year.

Each state in Australia entered three teams of four and Betty was the Skip for one of the NSW Women’s Teams.

This National Competition was played at Wallaroo Bowling Club & Moonta Bowling Club on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia.

The event was held over

four days and some great bowls were played.

Soldiers Point Bowling Women’s Bowling Club’s Lorraine Cloke, told News Of The Area, “The result came down to the wire, NSW had to beat Western Australia in the last game to win and they did.”

This means Betty has won a National Gold Medal.

“She is a true champion, Betty joined Portland Bowls Club in Vic. in 1977 and as she had always done in any sport she fancied, she worked at it,” she said.

ELEVEN year old Joshua Lee proudly represented Medowie Christian School and the State of New South Wales at last month’s School Sport Australia Diving Championships held in Perth.

It was only the third time Perth has hosted the event, which is shared throughout Australia’s capital cities.

School Sport Australia championships are held for several sports which include competitors representing each State and Territory.

Sports in which competitions are held include Australian Rules football, baseball, basketball, cricket, cross country, golf, hockey, netball, rugby league, soccer,

softball, surfing, swimming, tennis, touch football, track and field, triathlon, volleyball, water polo and, of course, diving.

The Diving Championships hosted at Perth’s HBF Stadium were for boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 19 years to compete in events including springboard, platform, synchronised diving as well as the Knockout event.

The Knockout event consists of three rounds where contestants are eliminated each round until three finalists are left to compete for the gold medal.

The 11 years boys knockout event was just one of three events in which Joshua attained

the gold medal.

Joshua also took out the Gold in the 10-12 years Platform, as well the team event.

In total, Joshua returned home from Perth with five medals making the long trip CONTINUED Page 14
