Fight continues over amalgamation WHEN the announcement was made in December 2015 that Port Stephens Council would amalgamate with Newcastle Council, the reaction from Port Stephens residents was not favourable. Port Stephens Councillors got together and formed a plan to put up a solid fight on behalf of the residents.
Port Stephens Council Deputy Mayor, Councillor Chris Doohan, told News Of The Area, “We put on gloves and became determined to challenge the ridiculous proposal, and have remained stoic in our fight for the people of Port Stephens.” The council invested a lot of

resort was continually plagued by work stoppages, late payments to contractors and court battles. The eyesore angered residents and left local contractors thousands of dollars out of pocket since work commenced in late 2011. The site was eventually placed into receivership in 2014. Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan met with News Of The Area to discuss the sale. “Mayor MacKenzie and I, with support of council staff, found the original owner, and gave him an ultimatum that the site needed to change from sitting in its current state,” Chris Doohan said. Port Stephens Council reported that the new sale contracts were signed and authorised on 1 November, 2016. The purchasing company, known as Landmark International Group Pty Ltd, has already commenced the site’s rebranding process, advising that the unsightly temporary fencing will be down within the week, with new fencing and site branding established over the next fortnight. The new owners have chosen the name ‘Anna Bay Resort’. “The Mayor and I will personally continue to push for this redevelopment to move along as quickly as we can, to rid Anna Bay of this long awaited and frustrating eyesore,” Cr Doohan told News Of The Area. The new owners have advised that the remainder of 2016 will be used to commence the initial clean up of the site. “I spoke with [one of the new owners] Mr Hu this week and encouraged him to use local tradesmen and businesses wherever possible, and that it would be a great start to being a part of our wonderful community,” Cr Doohan said. They intend for the site to be a modified version of the original tourist resort, accommodation and function centre that was first

Joan Shannon Retires at 79 years young By Mandy ELLIS JOAN Shannon is retiring at 79 years young. Westpac Rescue Helicopter volunteers recently bid farewell to the long-time serving volunteer from Corlette. Mrs Shannon started volunteering 20 years ago with her husband (Dec), and at 79 years she has decided to call it a day. Mrs Shannon said there is “always something to plan and consider, especially how our decisions today would impact on the future.” “Consideration of future benefits and usefulness, this has kept me mentally alert,” Mrs Shannon told Bay News Of The Area. Mrs Shannon, surrounded by the love and support of fellow volunteers, beamed as she received a bouquet of flowers and certificate, but most importantly the beautiful words from her colleagues. “I have known Joan for nine years, she was here

Fight continues over amalgamation... FROM Page 1 time and funds to put together a submission to the Government Appointed Delegate (GAD), to prevent the merger with Newcastle. The delegate did his report, and it was given to local government to digest. Chris Doohan comically told News Of The Area, “The rubbish in this report was impossible to digest – it smelled more like vomit.”
During this period, Port Stephens recognised the opportunity to have a more successful merger with the LGA of Dungog. After many of the councillors canvassed the people of Dungog, the support that was mustered was overwhelming. That proposal was put together and submitted, again with a lot of heart from Port Stephens Council and residents, and that invoked a second enquiry.
To date, the delegate report from the proposed Port Stephens/Dungog enquiry is still yet to be received, despite it being months since its submission. At the recent Local government NSW annual conference (LGNSW) Chris Doohan spoke, and publicly questioned the Minister of Local Government (Minister Toole) about the need for an immediate answer for the people of Port Stephens who have been waiting too long.
we will continue to support Joan as she enjoys her leisure time,” volunteer Neddie Billet said. Mrs Shannon plans to spend time relaxing and enjoying the pleasures in life.
He may not have worn his gloves – but he certainly gave Newcastle Council plenty of upper cuts during his address. Port Stephens is currently paralysed, awaiting the debacle to be over, and an appropriate decision to be made for our area. Every decision the council makes at the moment is implicated or hampered by the potential merger. Chris Doohan will keep News Of The Area up to date with updates surrounding the fight against the amalgamation.

Fundraiser for Heart Surgery By Simone JOHNSON
BORN only four months ago with seven holes in his heart, baby Luke has already gone through open heart surgery, followed by a cardiac arrest, and another heart operation followed by pneumonia. After such a devastating start to life, the community is being encouraged to get involved with a fundraiser to assist with Luke’s ongoing medical treatment. Tilligerry RSL is holding a trivia night to raise money for his family.
Normally residents of Lemon Tree Passage, the family has been living in Ronald McDonald House in Sydney since he was born and they have rarely been home since. After being awarded a bead to symbolise every surgery he has undergone in hospital, Luke now has 3.5 metres worth. The fundraiser will be held on Saturday 26 December, beginning at 6pm. Tickets are $10 per person, with tables of eight. Prizes have been donated by
local businesses such as Sand Duning Adventures and Moon Shadow Cruises. Spirits, wine and seafood have also been donated as part of the prize pool and raffle. Family friend and event organiser Paul Green told News Of The Area, “We would like to thank all local businesses for everything they have supplied or donated, as well as the community members for getting involved.” “At the moment, I’m not sure if the family will even be able to make it on
the night as they only come home for a few hours at a time,” he said. Paul has also set up a ‘GoFundMe’ page, which has raised approximately $1500 so far. Donations can be made at http:// www.gofundme/nm-lukey “Let’s all pull together to help a local family in need who are currently struggling,” Paul said. You can book a table for the night by calling the club directly on 49823889.
Dream up a new product BEING a mum of three would be enough to keep most people busy and put small business plans on the back burner, but not for Laice Moses, who has dedicated the past two-anda-half years to see her idea through to completion. A small desk, mobile phone and basic printer is what Mrs Moses of Corlette calls her office. Committing 100 percent to the business and daily reflection of her decisions is what has helped keep her focussed and on track. Mrs Moses told Bay News Of The Area, “There have been many obstacles which I have had to address, but my determination to prove to myself ‘I can do this’ kept me going.” Two weeks before the launch date, she had to change her packaging supplier as they did not meet her stringent quality control requirements. Taking a leap of faith, she agreed with her agent’s recommendation to use another company. “Although it was nerve-wracking waiting for the new packaging to
arrive, I am very happy with the result.” Asking questions and leaving my ego behind has got me to this point of my journey. After realising she did not need a degree, know how, nor be a computer whizz, she was then able to reach out to others who were experts in their field. “I am feeling such nervous excitement about the product now being available; it has been a steep learning curve for me,” Mrs Moses said. “I now know that I can dream up and create a new product. I want to lead by example and show my own children they can do anything they put their minds to and not be held back by limiting beliefs.” Mrs Moses would like to encourage others who may be sitting on a great idea to take the plunge and do it and shares some insight – contact an Industrial Designer as your first contact, the rest will follow. Carolling in Christmas THE countdown to Christmas continues with Burton Toyota, Port Stephens Council, Salamander Shopping Centre, Raine and Horne and the Churches of Port Stephens announcing a special night that will usher in the spirit of the season. Mark your calendars for Sunday 11 December to enjoy a night of sitting under the stars for Carols At The Bay, Fly Point Park Nelson Bay. Carols are a time-honoured tradition for families across Australia who sing along every year to their favourite Christmas songs and this year will be completely Christmas Carol orientated with the night ending with the Bay’s traditional Fireworks display. The night will begin at 5.30pm with Community Performers including local schools, dance companies, singing groups and local churches. ‘’Singing is good for the soul, our community Christmas carols are a fabulous family night out and a special time to reflect on the reason for the season,” Bill Brill, Pastor of Beachside and organiser of
this years Carols, told News Of the Bay. The Marching Koalas will also be a part of the Fly Point Carols this year. The Marching Koalas, a youth marching band, have travelled extensively to many parts of the world enjoying an international reputation for their excellent performances. Bonnie-Lee Mooney will also grace the stage after having much success in the music industry over many years. Bonnie has written and recorded with Jimmy Barnes, Human Nature and Cosima De Vito and performs musically in the local area. Bonnie is also a very successful makeup artist through her business Makeup by Bonnie-Lee. Headlining this year’s Carols in the Bay is Anyerin Drury. Working as a professional musician in the USA for the past eight years, Anyerin Drury returns to the Bay just in time to take you on a journey through the Christmas Carols tradition. Be prepared as Anyerin carries you away in a beautiful version of Silent Night that will

The Community Forum will be held at Tomaree Community Centre, beginning at 2.00pm on Sunday 27 November and is open to the general public. Dr Blanch said any move to have the Mambo Wanda Wetlands listed under Ramsar would require broad community support to enable a detailed assessment against criteria for formal listing and he encouraged as many people as possible to attend the forum. “It is significant that for
20 years volunteers have been caring for the Mambo Wetlands Reserve and Wanda Wetlands Reserve, which are important elements of wildlife corridor and habitat for endangered and threatened species of fauna,” Mr Blanch told Bay News Of The Area. “Thanks to these volunteers’ efforts, these reserves can now be considered for international recognition,” Dr Blanch said. Dr Blanch has been CEO of the Hunter Wetlands Centre for the last two years, following a nine-year stint in Darwin as Director of the Northern Territory Environment Centre and as an environmental campaigner for WWF-Australia.

Crowds Gather at Tilligerry Festival By Heather SHARP HELD at Henderson Park, Lemon Tree Passage on Saturday 19 November, the annual Tilligerry Festival Foreshore Fun Day proved once again to be a successful event. State Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington was in attendance, telling News Of The Area, “So many people work so hard to make it happen.” “The community spirit has always been here and with increased numbers at the Festival you can really feel it today.” In addition to the usual rides, show bags, and fireworks, many volunteer, community, and education groups participate in the Festival, showcasing their services and products to the general public of festival attendees. The Tilligerry Auto Club was a popular attraction and in a kerbside chat, President Ian Jones told News Of The Area, “This club has been going for seven years.” “If you like cars, you’re
welcome to come along, we don’t discriminate against make, model, or gender.” The Ocean and Coast Care Initiatives (OCCI) volunteer group had a mocked-up rock pool to showcase some of the work they do. Volunteers Ainsley and Roger Reeder told News Of The Area, “We are here to educate people about the local environment.” Experienced rescuer from the Port Stephens Koala Group Ms June Wheen said, “Making people aware and educating them about who to contact when they find a koala is a key focus today.” President Carmel Northwood added, “Community engagement is important to us as our focus is on rescue and rehabilitation.” “Surrounding groups don’t have specialised care so we collect animals from areas such as Medowie and Muswellbrook to provide them with medical care before releasing back into their local environment,” she said. THE Rotary Club of Nelson Bay recently honoured five non Rotarian members of the Port Stephens community in acknowledgment of their service to the community, with the title of Paul Harris Fellow. The Club donates $1000 US for each recipient and the foundation finances projects around the world. Vickie McCleer was acknowledged for her work in a voluntary capacity over and above her normal duties to ensure the wellbeing of many young people experiencing difficulties of a personal, family, social or mental health nature. Vicki has helped to set up special programs for individual students and has initiated more extensive programs such as breakfast facilities for groups including many young people who are undernourished or inadequately cared for in many areas of personal need. Max Pride is most well known as President of Nelson Bay Golf Club. Through his and others efforts, many charitable organisations have benefited from events held at the course over the years
including Rotary, Community Hospital and Men of League to name a few. Max formed the Tomaree Prostate Cancer Support Group which provides assistance to the growing number of sufferers in our area. The group provides a “Buddy Program” where survivors of Prostate Cancer buddy up with sufferers to provide education and awareness programs, as well as providing volunteer drivers to appointments and monthly meetings. Gerry Mohan has been a director of Port Stephens Veterans and Citizens Aged Care Ltd. (Harbourside Haven) since around 2000 and took over as Chairman around 2008. Gerry is a driving force behind many programs at Harbourside Haven. He puts in many hours in this role, which is a voluntary

Supermoon over the Bay

By Jewell DRURY ON the evening of Monday 14 November, thick clouds blanketed much of the Bay during the much awaited ‘Supermoon’ and it was only the most patient who were rewarded. Soldiers Point resident Adam Peterson’s passion for photography is merely a hobby at the moment, but that could soon change if his ‘Supermoon’ photographs are any indication of his underlying skills and talents. “I love photography, what you can see with the naked eye is interpreted so differently through the lens of a camera because you can see so much more detail,” Adam Peterson told Bay News Of The Area. Adam and his wife, Amanda, have three children

the sun had just set reflecting light from the sun. Adam’s third photo was also taken on Tuesday night from Soldiers Point as the moon rose high into the sky, heading towards thick cloud cover seconds before it disappeared behind clouds. The effect Adam received by the clouds and moon colour gave him such a unique outcome that he decided to call this image ‘Darkside of the Moon’.
The final photo is probably the best and most accurate image of how most of us see the moon every day. The photo was taken from Adam’s balcony at Soldiers Point around midnight Tuesday night. Adam felt very lucky with this shot as there was a large break in cloud cover with the moon almost directly above him. “Nothing was between my camera lens and the moon, I
had crystal clear shooting in this shot,” Adam said. Adam calls this image ‘Exposed Moon’ as the moon was exposed in her true state to the naked eye. The moon came closer to Earth this year than any full moon since 1948 and is not expected to approach Earth as closely until 2034. You can contact Adam at: a_peterson83@bigpond.com
Devastating HSC Reforms set for 2017 By Jewell DRURY DUE to recently introduced reforms, 1000s of NSW students could potentially be prevented from receiving their HSC. The new reforms mean that NSW students who do not receive a Band 8 or above in their Year 9 NAPLAN will only receive a

The past year has seen membership double from its last financial year total. A huge contributor to this success has been by the appointment of a Business Development Manager, Peter Clough. Tastes at the Bay this year was a huge success with the event being run to showcase what Nelson Bay has to offer. More than 15,000 people flocked to the Tastes at the Bay Wine and Jazz Festival which highlighted Nelson Bay as a popular venue for major events. “I loved how this event brought people back into the Bay CBD and in the following years we hope to include Salamander Bay, Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay and Anna Bay,” Ryan Palmer, President, told Bay News Of The Area. “Our goal is to help each

Nelson Bay NOW has been an initiative that is being driven by the Tomaree Business Chamber and a number of organisations across the Tomaree Peninsula. The key purpose for the creation of Nelson Bay NOW, was to establish an advocacy organisation made up of local groups and individuals who have a vested interest in the future of Nelson Bay CBD and to be able to speak in a united and cohesive voice on matters that they all agree on. A highlight of the AGM was that a new board was announced for 2017. Vision Fuels Dreams Jack Standen was one of our elite athletes
By Jewell DRURY
MOTIVATION is the key to any goal and Jack Standen’s life is living proof. Shoal Bay Resident Graham Standen brought out scrap books full of memorabilia from his Dad, Jack Standen’s life when News Of The Area visited him earlier this week. Jack Standen was born in Camperdown NSW on 20 February 1909 and passed away 29 October 1973. At the age of 13 years, Jack cut out articles on his hero cyclists from the local newspapers and stuck them into scrapbooks, creating a vision board to feed his passion for cycling. He was an Australian junior cycling champion at
the age of 15 and was very passionate about the sport. Jack became a stand out at most events and the newspapers of the day took great interest in documenting this young man’s achievements. Each week Jack would have articles written regarding his own triumphs and victories and filled more than six scrap books with the cut outs, each page keeping his motivation alive. “When I go to a big professional track meeting, I do not merely sit down and enjoy the fun,” Jack Standen told a Sydney Mail journalist back in 1926. “I watch every move, the position a rider has and the finessing that takes place, I have gained no end of hints
in that way,” Jack said. “It is the dream of my life to represent Australia at the 1928 Olympic Games and I can assure you that if hard work and perseverance have anything to do with it, I shall not be found wanting.” Finally his passion, hard work and talent came q Graham Standen with his Dad Jack Standen’s memorabilia that proves together when Dreams Do Come True. Winds of Change
q Ken Osborne’s love for the Enga shines through the words in his book Winds of Change. Photo by Jewell Drury By Jewell DRURY SALAMANDER Bay resident Ken Osborne worked among the Kyaka Enga people of Papua New Guinea with the Australian Baptist Missionary
Society from 1956 to 1971. The 88-year-old’s short-term brief was to examine the agricultural methods of the Kyaka Enga in an attempt to improve their nutrition as medical staff had confirmed that malnutrition was widespread among children, with an infant mortality rate of 30 percent. Ken had heard many derogatory stories about missionary endeavours interfering in the cultural life of tribal peoples and this made him adamant that he would achieve a different outcome. He was determined to learn the local language and spent a lot of his time in the village learning from the Kyaka Enga people. Ken soon realised that the Enga villagers had each been engraved into his heart. “I even began to dream in the local language as I had become so much a part of them,” Ken told Bay News Of The Area. “I understood the importance of training Enga pastors, understanding that they would have the same worldview as their fellow tribesmen and not merely teach from a western worldview,” he said. Ken soon began work on translating the Bible into the local language. He met his wife, Shirley, when she
came to the village as a nurse and together they had four children whom they raised in Papua New Guinea until they returned home to Nelson Bay when their children reached high school age. An Enga tribesman came to Australia and lived with Ken and his family for six months
to complete the translation of the New Testament, which was presented to the Enga people in 1973. Statistics show that 90 percent of the Kyaka Enga are now Christian and that there are some 80,000 Baptist church members in the whole country of Papua New Guinea.
Ken’s love for the Enga shines through the legacy he has left in the hearts of the Kyaka Engas and in the words he has written in Winds of Change. Ken Osborne’s book is available by contacting mmc73218@bigpond.net.au or ph 4982 0360.

World COPD Day November 16 A healthy set of lungs is fundamental to a healthy life; yet the simplest daily action – breathing – is often taken for granted or overlooked. Symptoms of lung disease tend to creep up slowly and people automatically adjust their daily activities to accommodate or reduce their symptoms rather than getting help. 16 November is World COPD Day and Discount Drug Stores, together with Lung Foundation Australia, is raising awareness about the prevalence and impact of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Our Pharmacists can help you to determine the risk factors and symptoms of COPD, and if you’re on treatment, they can help you to manage your medication together with your health care team.

Thanks to the Salvos Dear News Of The Area, I WOULD like to sincerely thank the Port Stephens branch of the Salvation Army on behalf of carers who attended an amazing Pamper Day on 15 November. Those who care for loved ones were fed a sumptuous morning tea, had their nails done, new hairstyles, feet and hands massaged, and received a facial. What a blessing it was. We were all feeling very special and loved and shared our many experiences. Thank you to all who assisted to make this such a great day. Sue Mitchell Corlette
Privatisation concerns Dear News Of The Area, I AM writing to you over the concern of the privatisation of both Tomaree Lodge and Stockton Centre and the eviction of long time residents who have called these disability centres their home over the many years that they have been cared for. Both Tomaree Lodge and Stockton Centre are steeped in historical pasts with Tomaree Lodge being built by the Americans as a Training Centre during World War 2, later becoming a naval hospital/infirmary, transferred over to the State Government after the war it became a Centre for those suffering from Mental illness before becoming a home for the Disabled’ Stockton Disability Centre also has an historical past, it was built originally as a Quarantine Station after which it became a Hospital for those suffering from Mental illness to Stockton Disability Centre which is still known as today. As a Carer myself certified in Aged care, Disability and Home and Community Care I strongly believe that the residents could be disadvantaged by being moved out into Community Housing. Growing up and going to School in Nelson Bay I know both these facilities well, my Brother in Law is currently a Resident being cared for at Stockton Disability Centre. Stuart Tomlinson

Devastating HSC... FROM Page 8 possible teen suicide. The reforms fail to recognise students who excel in non-academic areas such as art and design but struggle with English and maths, and others who blossom later. “These reforms are quite simply discriminatory and offensive while at the same time badly thought out, unacceptable and contrary to what school is meant to be,” Michelle Morrison, retired Salamander Bay teacher, told Bay News Of The Area. “If we want better educational outcomes, then
we need to not exclude some children but rather look to better educational models to emulate,” Ms Morrison said. Michelle Morrison suggested we should look at Scandinavian countries whose results are often higher than ours and who do not follow the same driven, developmental outcome model we do. Much of the Scandinavian model includes play for much of the day resulting in less pressure, more fun and less paperwork for teachers. Team 2 - Winning Team, Fingal Bay Bowling Club.
History Making Finals HISTORY-making Finals took place at Fingal Bay Sports Club on Wednesday 16 November. Out of 56 teams from the Newcastle and Port Stephens districts, it came down to
Team 1 and Team 2 of Fingal Bay Bowling Club to bowl it out. Team 2 defeated Team 1 by a mere 7 points with Team 2 -v- Team 1 66/59. John Smith, President of the Newcastle District Bowls Association said, “It
is a unique occasion in our 3x3s Men’s competition, in Newcastle District Bowls Association, when for the first time we see two teams from the same club qualify through a round robin play off to play each other to find the winner.” “This competition is
another win for the Fingal Bay Bowling Club, following on from their success in the No. 6 Grade, Zone Pennant.” John Borthwick, Chairman of Selectors, said, “It’s an older person’s game in this area, I would like to see younger people getting
involved.” “I’d like to thank the ‘Ancient Reserves’ in the smoking lounge for cheering on their teams.” Fingal Bay Bowling Club along with Soldiers Point Bowling Club are co-hosting the 2017 Bowls NSW State
No. 5 Grade Pennant. Rink 1 No. 1 team won 25 / 18 Rink 4 No. 2 team won 22/13 Rink 6 No. 2 team won 26 /21
