Fire Station Educates Community By Sarah STOKES

SATURDAY saw the doors of Salamander Bay Fire Station being flung open to the public for its annual fire awareness event. Crowds flocked to the family event to learn about fire safety and the latest home safety equipment, to chat with firefighters and of course, to enjoy a sausage sizzle. Children were able to don a plastic firefighter’s hat and sit in the cab of a fire engine or have a turn with a water hose. By 12 o’clock, it was estimated that at least 200 people had already attended the event. Margaret Petersen, the station’s only female firefighter, demonstrated how to use a fire blanket and explained the importance of replacing old smoke alarms with the latest photoelectric

variety. These latest technology alarms are able to detect smouldering fires before they become smoke and flames, giving people that vital extra time to escape. Margaret, who has been in the service for 11 years, told News Of The Area, “The open day is an excellent occasion to learn about fire safety, especially the new photoelectric smoke alarms.” Other displays included a demonstration of how a stove fire can start and how to tackle it. With almost half of all fires starting in the kitchen, this was an important educational opportunity as part of Fire and Rescue’s ‘Keep Looking When Cooking’ campaign. The firefighters are also trained snake catchers and can be called upon to remove snakes from residential properties. Snakes can also become

LOCAL brewer Murray’s, based at Bobs Farm, is taking part in this year’s GABS (Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular) Festival. It kicked off in Melbourne on 19 May, then goes to Sydney on the 27 May and Auckland on 16 June. Each brewer is asked to produce a ‘festival beer’ which goes into selection by the attendees to vote for them to win People’s Choice. both sides of the fence. Councillor and Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan told News Of The Area, “I feel sorry for the good people of Dungog. It would have been the right moral thing to do, for Port Stephens to help our neighbour, and to think that Port Stephens Council’s own General Manager had to educate the Dungog councillors on the honest state of the situation is amazing.” “For Port Stephens residents, we have now lost

the opportunity to merge with a good neighbour, that welcomed us with open arms.” “It was Dungog that assisted with the delay on the decision of Port Stephens and Newcastle, and this delay was the lifeline given to us to stop the forced merger.” “We may not be so lucky next time because, Liberal or Labor, forced mergers are always a good possibility, and now our head is back on the chopping block,” he said. Councillor Geoff Dingle

competition. This year Murray’s Craft Brewing Co presents Brown Town. A Murray’s spokesperson told News Of The Area, “Brown Town is a speciality brown ale, with the additions of coconut, almonds and cocoa nibs at various stages in the brewing process. A rich malty backbone is the foundation of this beer with the three speciality ingredients giving it a unique complexity.” The GABS festival has been running since 2011 when two beer aficionados organised an event to celebrate craft beer. It was so successful, that it became an annual event.

Over the years, about 700 new beers have been brought into production. Murray’s has been in operation since 2006, initially at Taylor’s Arm on the NSW North Coast and later at Bobs Farm. They have up to 10 craft beers on tap at any one time plus bottled specials. Murray’s Brewery suffered a major fire last October but managed to bounce back as a major food, drink and special occasion venue in the Port Stephens area. We wish them lots of luck in the competition.

backlog, then a voluntary amalgamation is a bad deal for both Port Stephens and Dungog ratepayers when we are all left to sort out and manage the financial burden resulting.” “After September’s election we can all take a deep breath and start a respectful dialogue with our constituents and the State government about what any future amalgamation might look like and can it be equitably funded,” he said.

Washington: Government misleading Dungog

SHADOW Minister for the Hunter Kate Washington has accused Nationals Leader John Barilaro of misleading Dungog Councillors about the availability of NSW Government funding should a voluntary merger with Port Stephens be agreed. The Deputy Premier has reportedly told Dungog Councillors that he will ‘advocate’ within Cabinet

However, a written answer to Labor’s Shadow Minister for Local Government has advised that the funding is not available to Councils that did not merge as part of the “Fit for the Future” process, and that the allocated funding has now been returned to Treasury. “The Nationals Leader couldn’t stop the Government from merging his own local Council. Fidgets spinners are much more than just another fad toy, they can be excellent tools full of therapeutic benefits if children are taught to understand their origin and why they were first introduced into classrooms. Teacher Simon Tarrant spoke with the News Of The Area about the avalanche of popularity that the Fidget Spinner has seen. “I have used different fidget devices, both handheld and attached to the legs of chairs, to assist my students who legitimately need them to learn more effectively, but recently so many other kids have suddenly started saying that they ‘need’ these fidget spinners to focus.” “Problem is, the trend I am seeing is they only focus on the spinner, not their work and they also distract the kids

The Fidget Fad

THE Fidget Spinner, a three pronged spinning gadget centred on a central ball bearing, has become the controversial new fad sweeping the nation and taking over our schools and playgrounds. Originally created as a gadget to assist children who may be antsy, nervous, hyperactive or anxious, the gadgets have become popular with children across the board, seemingly overnight. Before spinners came along, many children who would perhaps benefit from them were hesitant of using fidgets because they felt “different” than their friends. But now, with these fidget spinners gaining so much popularity, the majority of children are using them regardless of whether they

Marine Rescue receives funding boost By Mandy ELLIS

PARLIAMENTARY Secretary for the Central Coast Hunter, Scot MacDonald has congratulated Marine Rescue Port Stephens Unit on receiving $12,800 in grants. Mr MacDonald said the Emergency Volunteer Support Scheme, a joint State-Commonwealth Government program, assists organisations with the recruitment costs, retention and training of volunteers working in emergency services. “Our emergency services volunteers are often the first people we turn to when we are at our weakest and so now we are supporting them so they can further train and expand their volunteer base,” Mr MacDonald told News Of The Area.

“The Port Stephens Unit will use this funding for first aid and advanced resuscitation training equipment and to run recruitment advertisements to increase membership.” The Port Stephens Unit is the largest in NSW with over 200 members and has major training demands to induct new members and revalidate all members in their qualifications. Marine Rescue NSW is auspiced by the NSW State Rescue Board and tasking is by the NSW Police Marine Area Command. Marine Rescue Port Stephens also supports the RFS Lower Hunter Firecom by providing after hours coverage for emergency calls in Port Stephens, Maitland, Cessnock and Dungog Council areas.

“I toured the Headquarters Radio Base and Training Facilities before being taken out on rescue vessel PS 31 to see its capabilities with Unit Commander Lee Uebergang and Deputy Unit Commander Neil Hansford earlier this year, was very impressed with the professionalism and competency of the team there.” Minister for Emergency Services, Hon. Troy Grant MP said that the NSW Government continues to deliver for regional communities. “Marine Rescue volunteers are an indispensable part of our emergency management system. Their work to protect lives and properties cannot be underappreciated,” Mr Grant said.

A HORRIFIC tragedy in Arusha, Tanzania has inspired Corlette mother and businesswoman Lauren Chircop to fundraise for the grief-stricken community. The final year pupils from the Lucky Vincent school (believed to be aged between 12 and 14) were on their way to take mock exams at

another school when the accident happened. More than 30 people perished in the accident, made up predominantly of schoolchildren as well as their two teachers and the bus driver. Only three students survived the accident. Lauren and her family first became involved with wanting to help

African children and their communities after a talk at their church. They were moved to bring about change, and joined a mission trip to Arusha to visit the families’ sponsor children. Upon their return home, Lauren and her daughter Gemma were inspired by their trip to beginning planning for a bigger goal, the establishment of an orphanage in Arusha by the end of 2018. Currently, all fundraising funds are pooled into an account and sent to Arusha to cover the needs of students. Their most recent achievement was putting Arusha student Andrew Mwakabana through University. Andrew is now in his final semester of a social work degree and will head up the orphanage when it opens. With the news of the distressing accident involving the Lucky Vincent School students, their fundraising

Exquisite Craft affects VIEW n the O Couch THE Nelson Bay VIEW Club was delighted with the response to its ‘Cavalcade of Exquisite Craft’ afternoon, held on the recent Mother’s Day weekend. Guests were amazed at the quality and range of stitchery and craft items on display, particularly those of Guest Presenter, Olive O’Kane, a local resident. Olive O’Kane has featured in several embroidery and stitchery magazines and held her audience spellbound as she talked about her works and told fascinating stories

relating to them. Ms O’Kane is passionate about her craft and her joy, talent, skills and excitement were infectious. “I have always known that Olive ’sews’ and that she is a humble person who never boasts about her creations, however I have only recently learnt the depths and heights of her amazing talent,” Pat Gibson, President of Nelson Bay VIEW Club told Bay News Of The Area. “Olive takes a lot of inspiration from nature and creates her own works, not relying on ‘kits’,” Ms Gibson said.

“One time I rang her and she said she was in the middle of trying to create a spider’s web inside a glass vase as she was making beautiful beaded spiders,” Pat Gibson added. A very powerful part of Olive’s display was a large framed embroidery piece embodying the ANZAC spirit, a tribute to her father. Featuring poppies, buttons from defence uniforms, a dog tag, and other mementoes, it is truly a magnificent work. Olive’s presentation was followed by a delicious afternoon tea as guests were invited to take a further look

at the amazing exhibits. The VIEW Club would like to thank all those ladies who so willingly and beautifully displayed their work and helped make the afternoon such a success. The money raised from the afternoon goes to the Learning for Life program, an initiative of the Smith Family to help disadvantaged children with their education. “Sharing is a part of Olive O’Kane’s psyche and we would love to present her work if other local ladies were invited to display their work too,” she said. For further details contact Pat Gibson on 0401 698 003.

PORT Stephens women will have the opportunity to apply for a $1,000 scholarship to help them achieve their goals as part of 2018 International Women’s Day celebrations. Three scholarships worth $1,000 each will be available for women aged 16 and over to encourage, inspire and support them in a broad range of endeavours, including arts and culture, environment, business, community, health and sport. Port Stephens Councillor Sally Dover brought the proposal to Council, where it was unanimously backed by her fellow councillors. “With this, we’ll have

the opportunity next year to highlight the work of women, some who have been working tirelessly in the community with passion and dedication,” Cr Dover said. “A lot of women sow their lives into their families and this might be an opportunity for them to step out and do something important to them. “Our community is full of amazing women. We need to acknowledge these women’s efforts as often as we can, and handing out these scholarships on International Women’s Day would be a great way to do it,” she added.

Nominations will open in early 2018, with the awardees to be announced on Thursday 8 March 2018 at the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay’s International Women’s Day lunch. Darcy Geale, President of the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay, says Rotary is proud to be part of the joint initiative with Council. “The scholarships will encourage further valuable participation by women in our community,” Mr Geale said. “One of our key focuses as a Rotary Club is the involvement of youth in the

future of our community. Speaking with two young ladies at the Real Future’s program and hearing their excitement to become part of the program was very encouraging,” he said. At the end of the scholarship period, the successful candidates will be asked to make a small presentation at the 2019 lunch on how they used the scholarship. For more information about the scholarships and the application process, contact Council’s Community Development & Engagement Coordinator Penny Amberg on (02) 4980 0255.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,

Friends of ours have asked us to join them on their next camping trip. We’ve never actually been camping before. How should we prepare? Dear Ms GH,

Ms GH, Raymond Terrace

Ah, camping. The second great Australian dream after home ownership. In fact, given our current housing crisis, it may become the first great Australian dream. Kids will save their pocket money in order to buy a three by three metre plot in their parents’ backyard and pitch a yurt. Camping means different things to different people, so I’d be asking a few more questions before you commit. Do they mean the sort of camping where you stock up at BCF with every contraption known to man and then pitch your tent on a car-space sized area for $35 a night? Lots of people like camping grounds, but I can’t understand why you’d want to sleep in a synthetic pyramid, wear your thongs into the communal shower so you don’t get ringworm, or cook in the ‘food hygiene rules do not apply’ camp kitchen. Or are they ‘real’ campers? This involves living off the land. You basically wear camouflage gear, and your camping equipment looks like something out of MASH. You spear a bush turkey for dinner and then eat it raw because no one has succeeded in the fire-making efforts portrayed by Bear Grylls (with his soft stubble and impeccable attire, even though he’s just wrested the sound guy who is dressed up as a bear – sorry, I digress). The toilet is a spade and a eucalyptus leaf. You sit around on camp chairs and start dozing off until someone says, “Didn’t that brutal killer Malcolm Naden have a cabin near here?” Do you find either of these options appealing, GH? If, even after my warnings, you throw caution to the wind, take note of all motels within a 50km radius. You just never know when your group of happy little campers will turn feral. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Scholarship Boost for Women

OPINION Dear News Of The Area, ON behalf of the Leukaemia Foundation, I would like to say a big thank you to readers for their incredible support of World’s Greatest Shave this year. The extraordinary people who shaved or coloured and their generous sponsors have now raised an incredible $4,920,000 in NSW alone, helping to fund projects that will make

Hair-Razing Effort

a genuine difference to local families facing blood cancer. The money will now be used to provide safe and comfortable accommodation in the city for families living in regional NSW so they can more easily access life-saving treatment. It also means we can offer free transport, counselling, information and practical support to the 60,000 Australians living with a blood cancer.

Meanwhile, researchers funded by our supporters are working tirelessly to discover safer and more effective treatments. Although their critical research is improving survival rates, sadly an Australian still loses their life to blood cancer every two hours. But thanks to those taking part in World’s Greatest Shave, we are well on our way to reaching our goal of $5.6 million in NSW. There is still time for

people to sign up or make a donation at www. worldsgreatestshave.com. au. Thanks to you, the Leukaemia Foundation will be able to help more Australians with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related disorders survive and live a better quality of life. Bill Petch CEO - Leukaemia Foundation

Paddle For The Planet By Jewell DRURY

THE inaugural Port Stephens Paddle for Planet is supported by Port Stephens Tourism and will be one of the opening events for the popular Naturefest festival which runs from 1 June to 16 July, 2017. Paddle for the Planet is a global paddling relay, uniting paddlers, creating awareness and a movement for conservation. The goal is to have simultaneous paddling events happening, at a specific time, in every time zone in each country around the world. Launching Port Stephens Naturefest, Paddle for the Planet comes to Shoal Bay 3 June. Port Stephens Paddle for the Planet aims to draw attention to our unique water environment and activities and has been organised by Rod Waski, a passionate Stand Up Paddleboarder,

diver and passionate water enthusiast. “We are hoping to encourage paddlesport enthusiasts from all around Port Stephens and beyond to come and be part of what will be an amazing day of paddle fun,” Rod Waski told Bay News Of The Area. “Kayaks, outriggers, SUPs, surf skiers, canoes and Dragon boaters are all welcome and we hope to connect paddlers of many different persuasions through their shared passion for the water,” Mr Waski said. Paddle for the Planet aims to raise awareness and financial support for marine conservation specifically in the area of conservation reserves and “no take zones”, minimising the impact of fishing on sensitive areas, river pollution clean up programs, beach clean ups and marine awareness programs. Paddlers of all crafts can register through Facebook

or through the organisation’s website. Paddle for the Planet will take place at Shoal Bay Boat Ramp on 3 June.

Registrations open at 8:30am and the event will start at 10:00am with a barbecue at the conclusion. Shoal Bay SUP will be offering a number of paddleboards for free to participate on the day,

however pre-booking is required. Donations on the day will be accepted on behalf of the Australian Marine Conservation Society and Sea Shepherd Australia. More information can be

found on the Facebook page, Shoal Bay SUP. Paddle for the Planet is a supported by International Canoe Federation and International Dragon Boat Federation, and is a registered not-for-profit organisation.

Kinky Boots for Probus By Jewell DRURY

IT’S been another busy month for the members of the Probus Club of Port Stephens. The group has been out and about again attending their meetings and participating in various activities. Guest Speaker at the monthly meeting was Monte Dwyer, who is best remembered as the weather man on the Today Show a few years back when Liz Hayes and Steve Liebmann were hosts. Dwyer was an amusing entertainer with a very interesting and checkered career and held his audience in the palm of his hand as he shared his stories. The snooker boys who meet for “Pot Black” every Tuesday are well into the hotly contested blue versus red pairs competition. “The monthly social bowls mob involves a keen group which includes a lot of sledging and laughs involved in the night which makes a fun night for all attending,” Ann Gibson, President told Bay News Of The Area.

“Twenty-seven members travelled to Sydney to see ‘Kinky Boots’, enjoying a pub lunch before the show and lots of great conversations on the way down and back,”Mrs Gibson said. The fun, feel-good musical tells a simple story about acceptance of yourself and others. A trip away to Mudgee in August is currently on the drawing board and a Morning Tea by the Sea has been planned for Thursday 25 May. Coming events include an Annual Ladies Lunch in mid-June, Railway and Mining Museum day trip and a Christmas in July Mystery Tour. The club offers fun and friendship to retired and semi-retired couples and singles. Everyone is welcome to attend meetings on the second Thursday of the month, 9.30am at Nelson Bay Bowling Club. Call Penny on 0419 436 733 or visit the website for more information or go to www. probusclubofportstephens. org.

Tri Port Stephens

PORT Stephens played host to the last race of the racing calendar in the Elite Energy Triathlon Tri Series at One Mile Beach. The Saturday event was well attended with in excess of 1100 people registering to race across four different distances. Despite the widelypublicised threat of inclement weather, Port Stephens turned on a day of blue bird triathlon festivities for participants of all ages and abilities. 2017 was the sixth time Shoalhaven based Elite Energy (the organising company) had brought the event to Port Stephens and with the support of Port Stephens Council has seen participant numbers increase each year. “The Tri Port Stephens leg of this 12 stop series has an atmosphere like no other, people come in big groups with family and friends for one last race before winter, it really has a party atmosphere,” said Sebastian Gallery of Elite Energy. CEO of Elite Energy Mark Emerton said, “Being the third largest of all our events we get excited to see so many different walks of life, different abilities and different age groups getting

behind the fantastic sport of triathlon in such big numbers.” In the longest of the four contested distances was the standard distance (1.5km swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run). With near perfect racing conditions spectators were in for some very exciting racing. In the Men’s Standard distance race Chris Huang took out the honours in a time of 2.05.54. Huang of Wollongong, NSW held a strong two and

a half minute lead out of the water and extended that lead on the bike by a further 23 seconds being chased by Matt Lewis of Huskisson, NSW who closed the gap on the run, but didn’t have enough to outclass a very strong performance by Huang. Huang finished his season in style finishing minute and a half ahead of second place Lewis (2.07.03) with Nathan Miller a regular on the standard distance podium rounding out third place(2.07.43).

Nelson Bay 2-day Veteran Women Country Tournament held on 18 and 19 May

The Women’s Standard Distance was by far the most entertaining with a dead heat between Erin Doyle and Kate O’Conner. Doyle lead O’Connor out of the water with a 54 second lead, this lead was chased down by O’Conner on the bike who came into transition 2 one minute and twelves seconds ahead of Doyle. With Doyle a known strong runner Doyle came back to run side by side with

lieu of their time. It is expected that in excess of $5000 will be donated to community groups and charities who supplied 50 volunteers who manned drink stations, athlete safety and other various roles across the event. “The Port Stephens triathlon festival is only made possible by the hard work of our fantastic volunteers,” said Jody McClaren, the Volunteer manager at Elite Energy.

The format was an Individual Stableford on the Thursday, with a 4BBB on the Friday. The Winners on Thursday were: Division 1 Loraine Sladden, Wakehurst; Division 2 Margaret Oakley, Shelley Beach; Division 3 Rhonda Barbat, Shelley Beach. In the 4BBB event, the Diamond Jubilee Perpetual Trophy was won by Barbara Clark and Deborah Campbell, both Members of Castle Hill Country Club. “With our new club house nearing completion it is envisaged that this will be the first of several such events to be held bringing many visitors to the Port Stephens region, not only to play golf on our beautiful courses but to enjoy all the facilities that our blue water paradise has to offer,” Anne Peterson, Lady Veterans Delegate, said. Lyn Walker, President of the VWGA of NSW, added, “The course looked beautiful, in the sunshine, on the Thursday.” “The experience of playing in this setting with the wildlife and the native bush is an appealing prospect for those who normally play on a city-linked course. The rain on the Friday was unfortunate but didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the ladies for the event and

[Golf] Nelson Bay Golf Club By David and Rhona BIRSS

Veteran Women

Country Tournament

MORE than 200 lady golfers, representing 29 golf clubs from Metropolitan Sydney and various rural areas of NSW, descended on Nelson Bay for the 2-day Veteran Women Country Tournament on 18 and 19 May. Due to the popularity of Port Stephens, Nelson Bay Golf Club was elected to host the 2017 event and, emphasising this point, entries closed in a matter of weeks. CONTINUED Page 8
