Our Place is completely community focused with both couples having the philosophy of supporting the community who supports them even down to the build using local suppliers and companies. As part of opening celebrations and the “giving back to our community” ethos, Our Place Preschool gave away two fee free positions up to three days per week for a four week period valued at up to $1,164 per position through a Facebook competition.
Winners of the competition were Rachael Jenkins from Nelson Bay and Mel Massey of Fingal Bay. “We want to be a part of the community not only serving the community through our families but giving back to our community,” Ms Slade said.

A Giant Step for Bay Actor
LOCAL Actor Seth Drury recently won a role in the Australian premier of the Musical Big Fish. Now 26 years old, Drury first moved to the Port Stephens area when he was six and was always destined for big things, but no one would have thought that it would mean him landing the role of Karl the Giant in the international hit, Big Fish. Although tall, the role required Seth to increase his height by 2.6 metres which meant he had to develop the ability to act whilst on stilts. “Dream big is one of the main themes of this show and we have certainly done that in every way, from mermaids to witches and everything in between,” Seth Drury told Bay News Of The Area. “It’s truly a magical experience bringing Karl the Giant to life on stage each night,” Seth added.
CONTACT US:
Seth is now based in Melbourne and has won numerous acclaims in the acting field including for his one-man cabarets touring Australia, “Bring Back the Baritone” and “Unmasking Prince Charming”. RPG Productions presents the Australian Premiere of Big Fish at the Hayes Theatre Co from 18 April to 14 May 2017. Based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed film directed by Tim Burton, “Big Fish”, centres on Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest and then some. Overflowing with heart, humour and spectacular stagecraft, “Big Fish” is an extraordinary new Broadway musical that reminds us why we love going to the theatre, for an experience that’s richer, funnier and bigger
than life itself. Director Tyran Parke, who hails from Newcastle said, “Since the moment we announced we were holding open auditions for this production, we were overwhelmed by the amount of talent presented and the enthusiasm for this special story.” “It is a great family show full of magic,” Mr Parke said. The cast of 14, includes Phillip Lowe, Katrina Retallick, Adam Rennie, Aaron Tsindos, Joel Granger, Brittanie Shipway, Alessandra Merlo, Kirby Burgess, Seth Drury, Brenden Lovett, Zoe Ioannou, Zachary Webster Sam Wood and Brendan Godwin. Joining Tyran Parke will be Luke Byrne as Musical Director and Cameron Mitchell as Choreographer.

School of Rock, Craig Rosevear, was approached by ABC Radio and took up the challenge to “do something with drums”. He gathered his music students to support the ANZAC Day commemoration and a new tradition was born, with members of the Drum Crew participating in the event every year since. Craig is a talented musician best known for his role with the legendary Australian rock band The Screaming Jets. The drumming performance for ANZAC Day was called ‘Stick With It’. With Craig’s expertise and guidance, the young drummers mastered their marching and performance skills in the lead up to the big day.
Craig said the event encouraged different generations to join together for an occasion steeped in tradition and honour. “It is a great way to connect with what ANZAC Day is about,” he said. “It allows young people to spend time with an older generation and be part of an Australian tradition.” Beau Bramble from Anna Bay is a member of the Hunter ANZAC Drum Crew and said he was grateful to be able to participate in the ANZAC Day Service. He said it was important to respect the past and preserve the drumming tradition. “On ANZAC Day we are marching to commemorate the fallen soldiers of wars past and present,” Beau said. “Drummers were an integral part of the war effort as various drum rolls were used to signal different commands and the Drum Corps is still relevant today,” Beau told News Of The Area.

Traffic Congestion TOURISTS and locals have endured another holiday traffic snarl on Nelson Bay Road. In 2015, then Premier Mike Baird travelled to the Hunter and committed $67 for the “full duplication” of Nelson Bay Rd. This funding comprised $7 million for planning and $60 million for construction. The funding was to come from the sale of Newcastle Port. So far only $200,000 has
been allocated for a business case and corridor strategy. Kate Washington has called on Premier Berejiklian to ensure that her predecessor’s commitment is kept and that the full $67 million is allocated in this year’s budget. In March, Kate Washington questioned Roads Minister Melinda Pavey through Parliament. She asked when work would
commence on the $67 million duplication, did the Government stand by its commitment that the funding would allow for the full duplication, would the planned business case be made publicly available and had a scoping study been undertaken to determine upgrade priorities for Nelson Bay Road. The response was to refer Ms Washington to a previous response (LA 3659) which was provided in September 2016 by the former Minister Duncan Gay. That response was that a

corridor strategy for Nelson Bay Road was being prepared to identify areas which may need action, including congestion and traffic flow. The strategy would also help determine short, medium and long-term priorities for the road. “Two budgets have come and gone since Baird promised this funding,” Ms Washington said. “Premier Berejiklian needs to make sure that this money is in the budget this year,” she said.

Mullet run attracts crowds
By Jewell DRURY
THIS time of the year is the time of the well known “Mullet Run” along large stretches of Australia’s east coast. Most of the catch is taken during the Autumn/Winter pre spawning period, when adult mullet aggregate in estuaries, or migrate along ocean beaches. During this time anglers and commercial fisherman set up camp on beaches waiting for the mullet to move in. Tuesday and Wednesday saw schools of mullet gather at Fingal Bay providing a smorgasbord for numerous grey nurse sharks, causing the beach closure.
If you wish to read these other News Of The Area publications we can mail you a copy each week. Contact us for paid subscription rates: Email us media@newsofthearea.com.au Or you may see the edition in full ONLINE, on the News Of The Area website: www.newsofthearea.com.au
Saturday around midday, Nelson Bay residents Prue and Jeff Bamford along with two-year-old Huddy, went for a drive and happened to come across the amazing site of commercial fisherman pulling up several nets full to capacity on Fingal Bay Beach. “Our son, Huddy, actually directed us to Fingal by chance, as we were playing a game of “which way” and Huddy chose the way,” Prue Bamford told Bay News Of The Area. “These fisherman really earned their money, there is no way that I would stand out in chest deep water netting them in,” Ms Bamford said. The scene created a frenzy of visitors to the beach to witness this remarkable
event where the commercial fisherman stood in chest deep water pulling their nets out of the water. Once the fisherman had their eye on the prize, the nets were attached to a waiting 4WD, where they were pulled up the beach further in order to be packed into boxes to sell commercially. It is not uncommon for some commercial fisherman to catch up to 200 tonne of mullet during this season. The Mullet Run is a seasonal occurrence and yet never ceases to amaze and attract people by the seemingly unnatural phenomena. Videos of last week’s run have been uploaded to youtube and have gone viral.

Beccy Cole headlines The Blue Water Country Music Festival By Jewell DRURY
THE Blue Water Country Music Festival will have more than 100 artists performing across 22 venues over five days this year and is recognised by the community as the largest festival in Port Stephens. Bringing Country to the Coast is the point of difference that sets the Blue Water Country Festival aside from all other music festivals in Australia. This year’s festival also includes Country Music Cruises on our Beautiful Blue Water Wonderland of Port Stephens from 8-12 June. It has just been announced that headlining the Country Music Festival will be nine time Golden Guitar Winner, Beccy Cole. The country songstress Beccy Cole has delighted Australian listeners and concert goers for more than twenty years. With her stunning tenth release Sweet Rebecca, Beccy colours these winning qualities with bittersweet remembrance and reflection on her life thus far, both onstage and off.
“For me, every time I write songs it’s a very cathartic experience, because I write about my life,” Beccy said. With nine Golden Guitars to her name (including four for Female Vocalist of the Year), as well as multiple ARIA Top 10 Country and Top 40 Mainstream albums, a Top 10 DVD, three gold certified releases, and more than a dozen Number 1 Australian country singles, Beccy Cole is one of Australia’s most successful singer-songwriters. Beccy has toured with Slim Dusty, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers, and Glen Campbell, and fellow Australian performers including Felicity Urquhart, Sara Storer and Gina Jeffreys. The promoter and facilitator of this wonderful five day event is the Tomaree Business Chamber, one group of the many movers and shakers in our community. “Our first country music festival was in 2006, with Amber Lawrence making her first performance as a young artist,” Peter Clough, Festival Co-ordinator said.

Trooper Wilfred Wilkinson. Born in Bowna in 1895, Wilkinson was just 19 years old when he enlisted locally in the 1st Light Horse. He would go on to fight in the famous Light Horse battle, the Battle of Beersheba, which the Australians won. Wilkinson died, Killed In Action on 18 June 1918. But before that, Wilkinson saw quite a bit of military action, was wounded in battle, convalesced and included a one-time stint of illness related to lifestyle choices of the stereotypical larrikin digger. His first experience of front line conflict came on 7 August 1915 when the 1st Light Horse charged the hills of Lone Pine. Of the 200 men, only 50 survived this horrific assault. After convalescing from battle wounds, he returned on 1 March 1916 to the 1st Light Horse Regiment now based in Heliopolis after the Gallipoli evacuation. This would be a very
different war to the one he had fought at Gallipoli. The light horsemen were now mounted and eager to avenge their losses at Gallipoli. Turkish soldiers would find them an even more formidable enemy. Wilkinson continued to participate in numerous battles throughout 1916, 1917, and 1918 in the Middle East region. As News Of The Area history buffs will know, Beersheba fell on 31 October 1917, allowing the British and dominion forces to outflank and roll-up the Turkish defensive line. Wilkinson participated in this attack. On 18 June, 1918 the regimental headquarters of the 1st Light Horse Regiment was attacked with 75mm shells killing one man, our local hero Wilfred Wilkinson. Wilfred is now buried in the Jerusalem War Cemetery. He is remembered at the Medowie Public School Honour Roll, the Williamtown Public School Honour Roll, and Memorial Panel 3 of Australian War Memorial. Lest We Forget Wilkinson and his comrades. Ms PF, Corlette Dear Ms PF, When you said “soiling the workplace”, at first I thought we were dealing with incontinence issues. I was more than a little relieved that this senior was not relieving herself in a very literal sense, marking her territory, if you will, as some senior staff like to do when confronted with a new kid on the block. I envisage that your workplace is a bit like The Hunger Games. You are the delightful Katniss Everdeen, with cute plaits and olive skin, and your senior colleague is the female equivalent of President Snow, plotting each day with new levels of filth and depravity to test your limits. If she has been in the workplace for many years, you’ll never get rid of her. Her sense of entitlement is not based on merit, but on longevity. Like a long-term partner, she also feels very comfortable in her own skin. So comfortable, in fact, that I fear the keyboard crumbs and whistling nose breathing are just the start of more sinister vices – gouging the butter container instead of gently scraping, coffee granules in the sugar, an empty toilet roll on the holder, soup slurping and tooth grinding. Oh, the horrors these actions bring to the more obsessive and compulsive among us. Perhaps you need to demarcate your workspace. Or print out a cleanliness affirmation and stick it in a prominent place. Something like: “I shall tolerate no uncleanliness in body, clothes, habitation or thought” ought to do it. If her grotty ways continue, arm yourself with an arsenal of cleaning products and hunt her down, Katniss style. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Huge month for Probus
By Jewell DRURY
THE Probus Club of Port Stephens has had a busy month with lots of different activities being enjoyed by its members. The Golf and Putt Putt day at David Grahams organised by John Townsend was a great success with 33 keen players enjoying the day. “A sausage sizzle with drinks, coffee and homemade cakes was organised at the “19th hole”, followed by the hotly contested matches,” Ann Gibson, President and Publicity Officer of Probus Port Stephens told Bay News Of The Area. “In the spirit of fair play and fun, at the end of the day the winner’s cards were drawn out of the hat,” Ms Gibson said. Another successful event planed saw Nelson Bay Croquet Club host 19 Probus members for a social croquet morning. The strategic game was a surprise to many who had not played before and has now become a regular activity. Earlier in the month, the
walking group headed off to Nobbys via the Stockton ferry for a most enjoyable “out of towner” trek, and more recently over 20 members were joined by four grandchildren for a local stroll from Bagnalls Beach. This month also included over 100 members from all over the Hunter Probus

FOR most people, ANZAC Day is a day for reflection, a day to remember the sacrifices of servicemen and women who played a part in campaigns fought around the world over the course of history. For the children of serving defence members, the day holds a special extra
sentiment as they not only deal with the absence of a parent, but also the concerns associated with deployment. News Of The Area met with some of these very special children as they recounted their experiences. One Defence wife spoke to News Of The Area about her husband being deployed, and how their children have been

coping, coming up to ANZAC Day. “My husband is currently deployed with the RAAF for six-and-a-half months to the Middle East.” The couple have three children, aged five, four and eight months, When asked about their Dad, the eldest children, Jack and Georgia, said they wanted to tell him, “We can’t wait for Charlie’s first birthday because it means you will be home, we miss you Daddy.” Their father is due home the week Charlie turns one. Their mother sends this message: “Come home safe, we love you.” Carmen, mum to Charlie, Jackson and William, said, “My husband is currently away on deployment overseas for the next seven months, so he misses most birthdays and other important events or milestones in our family life with our boys.” “We love him so much and are very proud of what he does and what he has given up for us.” “Without the help of some amazing friends and

Emily, six, said “I am sad when Dadda is away because I miss him so much, but I am so glad he can help others and keep us all safe.” Ashleigh, nine, said “It makes me sad to see him
leave us for long trips but I am really proud of the work he is doing helping others and protecting us.” Sam, mother to Michael and Olivia, told News Of The Area, “The sacrifices my husband makes such as missing milestones, time with the kids and just being away in general say so much about the type of person he is. He wants the best for his family
and for that we will always be thankful.” News Of The Area sends a heartfelt thank you to all current and past members of our Defence forces.

Fostering Saves Lives By Sarah STOKES
WITHOUT foster carers, these two gorgeous animals would not be alive. Fostering really does save lives. Dog Rescue Newcastle and the Kitty Rescue Project are both desperate for more foster carers. The more carers, the more animals they can save from being euthanised. The Kitty Project currently has 26 animals in care and Dog Rescue has about 150. Dog Rescue Newcastle focuses on taking dogs out of the pound, particularly those on death row who often only have days or hours to live.
Junior Regatta, to hone young skills FROM Page 12
This term St Philip’s took up the call to sailing with students gaining confidence with their new found skills. Since the sailing school began five years ago, there has been more than 500 students and adults learn how to sail. A young woman from Victoria recently contacted Mr Oborn for lessons so she could compete in the Port Stephens Regatta. Having limited experience in sailing, she wanted to be able to use the correct terminology and to learn how to be a part of a crew. After three days of training she completed the Keel Boat Training Course, receiving a certificate and entering the Regatta as a crew member. “This young lady has now caught the bug for sailing and is looking forward to participating in the next Regatta after falling in love with our beautiful waterways of Port Stephens,” Mr Oborn said. Instruction is available in Dinghies, Racing and Keel Boat Training through the Soldiers Point Marina’s Sailing School. Contact Mr Graham Osborn on 0418 687531 for more details.
Kitty Rescue Project saves cats from the pound but also from people who can no longer care for their animals and those advertised on social media requiring homes. Food, flea and worm treatment plus any necessary veterinary treatment is provided. All that is required is that you are an animal lover and can provide affection, a secure yard (for dogs) and shelter for the animals until a suitable permanent home can be found for them, even if it is interstate. Lauren Baker is a local foster carer for Dog Rescue Newcastle and told News Of The Area, “Being a foster carer for dogs has been a rewarding

Unit Commander, Lee Uebergang said, “The Unit is so appreciative of what Women Who Sail Australia are able to achieve and greatly values the donation which goes directly to helping provide necessary safety equipment to MRPS as we are constantly upgrading our safety equipment to ensure that MRPS can fulfil its responsibility of saving lives on the water.” MRPS relies on donations from bodies like WWSA to make up the shortfall of over $150,000 annually which is not provided by Government. Junior Sailing Regatta
By Jewell DRURY THE Port Stephens Sail Junior Regatta was a great opportunity for 15 young people to hone their sailing skills. The yardstick handicapped system event saw the President’s Award go to St Philip’s Christian College student, Rebecca Petterson with Noah Davis receiving line honours in two races. “It’s great to see the young students now achieving a standard of skill where they can now compete in sailing regattas,” Mr Graham Oborn, Chief instructor at Soldiers Point Marina Sailing School told Bay News Of The Area. Mr Oborn, who has 60 years experience in Sailing, offers free sailing lessons to Tomaree High School and St Philip’s Christian College students during the first and fourth term of the school year.
