Mayor Ryan Palmer says this campaign is an important one for Port Stephens, as it is a popular holiday destination for families.

“Port Stephens Council is proud to again partner with Little Blue Dinosaur to keep kids safe these Christmas holidays,” Mayor Palmer said.

“We know this time of year is a busy one with visitors flocking to Port Stephens, so it’s an important time to remind people to drive safely and watch out for kids.

“These brightly coloured signs are a reminder to slow down

The ‘Holiday Time’ campaign was established in 2014 on the Central Coast by the Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation, after the tragic death of Tom McLaughlin in a pedestrian accident during a family holiday.

The campaign is now in 39 Councils across four States in Australia.

Tom’s parents, Michelle and David, founded the Little Blue Dinosaur and now channel their energy into making the school holidays safer for children, by working with local Councils to ensure community safety during these peak periods when

“Holiday destinations are most often a new and unfamiliar environment for children and their families with key visual roadway differences including lack of kerbs/guttering, no line markings or footpaths.

Parents must have a conversation with their children and go through how they are expected to behave when they’re in this environment,” said Michelle.

With a staggering 874 people killed on Australian roads alone already in 2018, amongst those young children, it’s now more important than ever to promote the pedestrian road safety message.

CHRISTMAS and the summer holidays are all about children, and the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre is celebrating with a special Exhibition; ‘Children’s World’.

When you enter Children’s World you will step into an exciting display of art and gifts to enhance your child’s world.

Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “Don’t forget to pay our fairy garden a visit, where your child may also write a letter to our fairy queen, who is sure to reply.”

The Centre has something for everyone and it is a perfect venue to take a break from the outdoors and great place to visit on a rainy day with the family during the holidays.

‘Ocean Blues’ a new Exhibition will also be on display until 29 January 2019.

‘Ocean Blues’ brings out the best in what our artists love about capturing the unique quality of the Australian light and the amazing colours of our oceans, seas, sky and sand.

The artworks tell the story of our beautiful Port Stephens, as well as the Australian Coastline at its

best.

The Centre’s member Kathi Oastler is the current feature Artist “Kathi is an artist who enjoys capturing the beauty in the world and continues to experiment with different media and styles to capture the rawness through to the intricate in nature,” she said.

Admission to the Community Arts Centre at Cultural Close, off Shoal Bay Road in Nelson Bay is free.

The gallery is open to the public 10-4 pm daily.

Driver Reviver needs your help

LONG car rides on hot summer days are all par for the course in the Australian summer holidays.

Whether you are visiting family interstate or skipping away for the weekend on the coast, the Driver Reviver helps many long car ride stories.

Stationed on every major arterial road, the iconic Lions Club Driver Reviver vans have been providing tea, coffee, and biscuits for almost thirty years.

Approximately 1.1 million travellers stop at the vans across New South Wales resulting in the consumption of 1.7 million cups of coffee or tea, and 1.3 million snacks.

One location is at the end of Medowie Road, where it meets the Pacific Highway.

The Medowie Lions Club vigilantly operate this station during all peak holiday periods providing a much needed rest for weary travellers.

A Transport for New South Wales study showed fatalities caused by fatigue have risen by 49% since 2015, however the number of Driver Reviver vans has reduced leaving Medowie as the only one in the local area remaining.

Their role is vital in supporting travellers transiting through the area.

Unfortunately, keeping the last van open is becoming increasingly difficult due to

a decrease in the number of volunteers available.

The Lions Club is urgently seeking help from Port Stephens locals to serve in the van over the coming and future peak travel periods.

The Medowie Lions Club President, Mr Patrick Byron told News Of The Area, “We understand it is a very busy time of the year and many families travel away from the area.”

“We are asking for local support to help pay forward the holiday spirit to our travelling comrades.”

The volunteers are not required to join the Lions Club.

They would simply be helping a Lions Club

member at the Driver Reviver van.

As the statistics show there is a need for this dedicated service.

THE NSW Government has granted the Port Stephens Council Mobile Pre School $60,000 to keep a mobile PreSchool Open providing early childhood education services around Port Stephens.

their wonderful service,” Ms Mitchell said.

“This Government recognises the importance of providing a quality early childhood education to all children, so this investment was a no-brainer.”

The service offers a challenging and stimulating educational program that provides opportunities for children to try new experiences, practice new skills and enjoy play at their personal developmental level.

The service focuses on making the transition to big school as smooth as possible and giving children important skills to help them enter school with confidence.

It caters for children aged 3 - 5 years and provides a school readiness program delivered by qualified, experienced and caring educators.

The service is subsidised for low income families and ATSI families and for children in the year prior to school entry with the program funded through the NSW Department of Education.

Port Stephens Council’s Community Services Section Manager Steve Bernasconi says it’s great to see this additional investment in the future of local children.

“Our service is focused on

prioritising enrolments of four and five year olds before they begin kindergarten, while supporting Indigenous and low income families, as well as families of children with disability from three years old,” Mr Bernasconi said.

“We aim to help children learn the skills to be schoolready through exploration and experimentation by growing their unique abilities.

“As this Grant supplements our existing funding, the mobile preschool will now benefit from more than $220,000 in 2019 — this will see us able to increase staff hours and provide better equipment for the children,” he said.

“This means we’ll be expanding our service from four to five days, plus adding in an additional location at Fern Bay to allow even more Port Stephens families to benefit. We’re proud to see this service grow in 2019,” Mr Bernasconi said.

Port Stephens Council’s Mobile Preschool will service Anna Bay, Fern Bay, Grahamstown, Medowie, and Raymond Terrace in 2019.

Operating six hours a day, now five days a week, the service is licensed to care for 20 children at each session.

2019 School Leaders

IT IS that time of year again where the school leadership battens are passed down.

Irrawang Primary School’s motto is ‘Safe, Responsible Students who show respect to everyone, everywhere, every time’.

Their election of 2019 School Captains is a true reflection that they stand by their motto.

The School Captains for 2019 are Phoebe Low and William Swan.

Phoebe is an outstanding student who is reliable and trustworthy.

She is best known for her happy, positive outlook, and her well-timed jokes.

William is a calm, enthusiastic student who can always be relied on to follow school and community PBL values.

He is a friend to everyone

The School Vice Captains for 2019 are Jakoby Hunter, Kaitlyn Taylor, Maggie Castles, and Lachlan Hilzinger-Geise.

The Stage 3 Assistant Principal, Mr Matthew MacDonald said, “With such a high calibre of leadership within the school and role models such as these six students, 2019 is shaping up to be a great year at Irrawang Public School.”

From little to big school, the incoming 2019 Irrawang High School’s student leadership group consists of nine exemplary students.

They were elected into their positions by their peers and teachers.

The newly elected representatives, their parents, and the Principal Mr Paul Baxter signed a Student Leader Code of Behaviour to begin their tenure as the 2019

Student Leaders.

School Captains for 2019 are Samantha Newell and Ryan Knowles.

Samantha is a national referee in both futsal and soccer.

Ryan enjoys fishing and playing soccer.

School Vice Captains are Rebekah Agius and Matthew Burke.

Rebekah plays hockey and soccer.

Matthew enjoys cheerleading and dancing.

Student Leaders are Hannah Williams and Tara Courtney.

Hannah enjoys horse riding, netball, and football.

Tara is undertaking a TAFE course in childcare.

CAPA Ambassador is Jenny Tiamu.

Jenny is involved with cultural activities and rugby league.

Support Unit Ambassadors are Timothy and Mitchell Low. Together Timothy and Mitchell raised over $5000 for Cerebral Palsy Alliance.

They also enjoy Sailability and lawn bowls.

Mallabula Makeover

STAGE one of the $200,000 upgrade of Caswell Reserve Mallabula is now complete and ready for the influx of holiday visitors.

The access road and new carpark have been sealed and speed bumps added. On top of this the old play equipment has been demolished and a new adventure playground is now available for the children. It has been built close to the shelter shed.

Linking pathways are also in place.

A new amenity block will be erected sometime in February, on the eastern side of the car park. The old block will be demolished.

Cr Steve Tucker said that with all of the public facilities being clustered on one side of the car park, it would be a much safer environment for the children.

“There will be no need

now for them to run across the road anymore,” he said.

“The large open space created on the western side will be great for recreational games.”

The next improvements to this popular picnicking spot will be pathway construction from Billy’s Beach across in front of the boat ramp to the little creek. There will also be a rebuild of the boat ramp.

Rick, Medowie HI Rick, Beside from my usual advice of always presenting a home immaculately, stylishly and clutter free, one of the other things I love to see my sellers doing is to assist in the promotion and ultimately help sell their own property. So when you see your home FOR SALE online, jump on board and share the link to the listing with all your friends and family on your Facebook and social media pages.

You may think that your friends and family won’t be interested or that you’re spamming them with your personal advertisement but seriously, who cares? One of them might actually be interested in buying it or they may know someone who is seeking a home just like it.

A lot of the time people have family who want other family members to move closer to them as well, so it’s certainly worth sharing. Request that your friends and family share it too.

Another tip is not to just promote it once, share your property and talk about your property whenever an opportunity arises. Give yourself every possible chance of a successful sale!

GARY and his wife, Christina Hill couldn’t be happier that a huge number of guests managed to travel to Port Stephens from Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the lessor known, Isle of Man to attend the wedding of their daughter Leah Hill to Callum Gallagher.

The Groom, Callum, is from the Isle of Man. Leah is Australian. They met in Thailand and the rest is history.

The wedding has involved many thousands of miles of International travel for everyone to be here to celebrate the nuptials.

You’ve got to give him kudos for trying, Mrs KM. I mean he could have taken the soft option and bought her a vanilla-scented candle, or a matching tattoo, or perhaps some inappropriate underwear, but no, this young man has saved for weeks in order to offer your daughter an adrenalin-charged, unforgettable experience. Never again will her heart race as it has with him (well, actually, not with him, with the instructor she’s strapped to, somewhat defeating the purpose).

But still, he’s gone the extra mile, and that deserves credit. If it makes you feel better, statistically, she is far safer jumping out of a plane than driving along Nelson Bay Road. Even better, she is far more likely to be proposed to in a hot-air balloon than a skydive.

Just tell her to make sure he jumps first, then there’s still time to chicken out if she gets cold feet.

q ELEVEN EVENTS: Keira McGregor with six medals including four gold.

KEIRA McGregor is enjoying a well earned rest after another weekend filled with gold medal winning performances.

Two days of competition started with 12 year old Keira breaking the records for both the 100 metre and long jump as well as winning the 800 metre and hurdles at Little Athletics in Raymond Terrace.

Then it was off to the Hunter Athletic stadium to compete in another six events in the Shield Competition.
