New Year and it’s eve, is celebrated in many ways by people, but it’s often a time when resolutions are made for the start of a fresh year. Take some time to reflect, take some time to think and take some time to celebrate. New Year’s Eve will see Nelson Bay’s CBD and foreshore

in Port Stephens abuzz with live music, boutique shopping, family amusements and a spectacular fireworks display. More than 5000 people are expected to gather at D’Albora Marina on the Nelson Bay foreshore for the free, family-friendly event, which will begin with live music from 12 noon and culminate with fireworks soaring over CONTINUED Page 3 q Enjoy the spectacular fireworks display.

Shopping Centre Accident A MAN is in hospital after being struck by a vehicle in Salamander Bay yesterday. About 3.20pm (Monday 26 December 2016), emergency services were called to a shopping centre car park on Town Centre Circuit, Salamander Bay, and found a 76-year-old man trapped under a Suzuki Vitara. Fire & Rescue NSW attended the scene and removed the man from under the vehicle. NSW Ambulance Paramedics also attended and treated the man at the scene before he was taken to John Hunter Hospital by Westpac Rescue Helicopter, where he remains in a stable condition. Officers from Port Stephens Local Area Command searched the Suzuki Vitara allegedly finding ‘Ice’ in the vehicle. The driver, a 37-year-old man, was arrested and taken for mandatory blood and urine testing. Inquiries are continuing into the crash.

All-Season Destination MORE events and conferences, improving the quality of tourism product and luring more interstate and overseas visitors through Newcastle Airport are on the agenda for the new Board of Destination Port Stephens (DPS). New Chairman of the Board Andrew Macdonald – owner and manager of The Nelson Resort will join four new Directors: Michael Aylmer from Port Stephens Accommodation, Matthew Findlay from Newcastle Airport, Michael Hogg from Port Stephens Paddlesports and Alicia Cameron from Little Beach Boathouse. Completing the nine-member Board are current Directors Deborah Stretton from D’Albora Marinas, Simon Glover from Mercure Newcastle Airport and Janelle Gardner and Mike McIntosh from Port Stephens Council. The DPS Board is backed by the recently appointed Destination Marketing Manager for DPS, Danny Eather. New DPS Chairman Andrew Macdonald said he had been a Board Director for six years but was looking forward to his first term as Chairman to expand Port Stephens’ thriving $400 million-a-year visitor

economy. “We boast outstanding natural assets in Port Stephens but by developing and evolving our product and lifting its quality, we can take our brand to the next level and attract higher-yielding visitors.” In partnership with Newcastle Airport, we’re also focused on leveraging the airport to open up new domestic and international markets for our region,” Mr Macdonald said. Danny Eather said the organisation was working to build a strong, all-year events calendar and lure more corporate conferencing business to Port Stephens to highlight the region as an all-season destination. “With our pristine beaches and blue, dolphin-filled waters, Port Stephens is always popular in summer but our mission is to ensure there is always something to see and do here year-round and to ensure domestic international markets know that,” he said. “We are also keen to build our relationship with the local business sector and wider community to ensure the visitor experience is of a consistently high standard.”

Oh No, Bottle’O FROM Page 1 it would have a “major impact” on policing resources. The submission described Anna Bay as a “hotspot” for alcohol-related crime. Port Stephens Council Minutes relating to the application noted police opposition, but determined that the liquor outlet was “unlikely to have a negative social impact” and also that the premises would add “to the character of the village centre” as it would be open during the day. Local small business owner and resident Jeff Lee said the refusal was “a wonderful result for the area, since there is already an anti-social problem with regards to alcohol consumption and abuse” in Anna Bay. “As if we need a third bottle shop,” Mr Lee told News Of The Area. “We don’t need the extra competition and the decision made by the Liquor and Gaming Authority is the right one for Anna Bay.” “I don’t believe that Port

Eat it to beat it AS 2017 approaches, inspiration is at hand for Hunter residents looking to put down the booze and stock up on beverages that don’t fuel a hangover. Cancer Council NSW nutrition program Eat It To Beat It works with parents to help families add more fruit and vegetables to the household diet for better health and cancer prevention. The program has already helped inspire more than 1470 Hunter parents in 2016, through free sessions and workshops. Hunter Nutrition Project Officer Clare Murphy said celebrating the New Year and making a resolution to pick up healthy habits was a great way to start 2017. Drinks, which so often featured in celebrations, offered a great starting point. “Fruit and veg mocktails can add great liquid punch to a New Year’s party, while fruit and veg smoothies offer a great pick-me-up next

morning,” Miss Murphy said. “It’s also a quick and easy way to help reach the recommended daily intake of two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables.” Miss Murphy said New Year was also a great time to think about lifestyle choices, which affected cancer risk. In Australia approximately 37,000 or one third of cancer cases each year are preventable. Evidence now shows that nearly as many cancer cases are caused by a combination of the following lifestyle choices as smoking: drinking too much alcohol; being overweight; a lack of physical activity; eating too much red and processed meat; and not eating enough fruit and vegetables. For New Year’s fruit and vegetable beverage inspiration, try these recipes: Mocktail: juice or blend your favourite combination of fruits (mixed berries, orange and pineapple, or grapes) and

newsofthearea.com.au mix with a sparkling water or milk base, along with cubed or crushed ice. Frozen fruit pieces make a great garnish too. Smoothie: in a blender combine two large handfuls of baby spinach, one banana, five strawberries, one mandarin or small orange, ½ cup water and ice cubes. towards the construction of a dedicated koala hospital at Port Stephens, in an effort to curb the rapid decline in the local koala population due to loss of habitat. “Port Stephens is renowned for its local koala population. Unfortunately, the local koala population is in rapid decline and we must act to avoid their extinction,” Kate Washington MP said. “A dedicated koala hospital will help protect our treasured national icon. It would be a travesty, if we don’t do all that we can to ensure our children’s children can still see koalas in the wild in Port Stephens,” Ms Washington said. Port Stephens Koala Carer Carmel Northwood said the grant would offer more support to koala care and rehabilitation in the area.

“It is difficult to find fulltime carers. The funding will allow us to roster volunteers into less intensive roles in areas including caring, maintenance and cleaning,” Ms Northwood said. Stage One of the project will include rehabilitation pens, carer accommodation and storage for Port Stephens Koalas operational equipment. Additional funding will be required to see Stage Two of the hospital proceed, which will include emergency veterinary and educational facilities. Ms Northwood said it was vital that residents and tourists knew the correct wildlife injury contact number. “For all native animals, including koalas, call Hunter Wildlife Rescue on 0418 628 483,” Ms Northwood told Bay News Of The Area. “It doesn’t matter what time of the day or night you

call. If a koala has been hit by a car, immediate treatment is required. Koalas can also quickly become dehydrated and puncture wounds require antibiotics,” Ms Northwood said. It is estimated that there may be as few as 150 koalas in the wild in Port Stephens now. Koala numbers in NSW represent just 10 percent of the nation’s koalas. Koala protection is something that both sides of the political spectrum agree on. Ms Northwood praised the work of both Kate Washington and Port Stephens Mayor Bruce MacKenzie. The grant was funded through the Community Building Partnerships Grant. For more information, visit Port Stephens Koalas on Facebook or go to portstephenskoalas.com.au

New Year’s Day Chillout FAMILIES, foodies and fans of good beer will gather at Murray’s Brewery in Port Stephens on New Year’s Day as an Indie chart topper gives a free concert and two brand new exotic beers are released. The free-entry ‘New Year’s Day Chillout’ event will run from 10am to 6pm and include the launch of a blue-tinged Blueberry Beer and a blood orange IPA. “If you think mixing beer and fruit is for wimps, then think again!” brewery owner Murray Howe said. “Properly balanced fruit beer can be the perfect, refreshing beverage on a hot summer’s day, and although relatively uncommon in Australia, craft brewers around the world are busy experimenting with fruit

in their beers in new and creative ways.” Chart-topping music act, Grayson, will perform a free concert at noon. With a number one hit in the USA on the New Music Weekly Country Chart for his current single, 10-9-87, Grayson has enjoyed international success on Indie and mainstream music charts, and currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee. Complimentary beer and wine tastings will be on offer at the event, and a full lunch menu is available. A brewery tour held at 2.15pm will give guests an insight into how Murray’s award-winning beer is made, and costs $5 per person. A brewery bus shuttle will operate on the day. The event is family-friendly, and the venue recently launched “Pirate Bob’s Scavenger Hunt”, an interactive mobile adventure which will take kids on an adventure around the property. Entry to the brewery is free, but bookings are required.

Dear Jasminda,

My 20-year reunion is coming up in the New Year, but post-school life has been a series of humiliating misfortunes. Should I go, or stay at home and watch funny cat videos? RM, Medowie Dear RM, REUNIONS are an uncomfortable experience for most of us. It’s hard when your former schoolgirl crush is now overweight, moustachioed and bald. Particularly when you went to an all-girls school. But school reunions are a time to embrace the past, not the present. It doesn’t matter if Tiffany ended up becoming a Vogue model. You can nod at her inane conversation and Botoxed forehead and recall that day in Year 8 when she had a gastric attack on the backseat of the all-stops bus. So what if Priscilla is a neurosurgeon. Her teenage tunasandwich-induced halitosis is a lingering memory more powerful than the kudos of a medical degree. Reunions are a great equaliser. No amount of therapy can cut the bonds formed when forced to wear a maroon tunic with matching Sherlock helmet for six years. Just breeze through questions about what you are doing with your life with obscure information you’ve gleaned from midnight infomercials. You know, “Life with a FlowBee Precision Home Haircutting System is pretty damn satisfying” or words to that effect. If that doesn’t work, remind your childhood friends that it was your finesse that clinched the inter-school Hockey final against the Medowie Muzzlers. Smile sweetly, guzzle some Dutch courage (at $95 a head you deserve it) and try not to gaze longingly at the courtesy bus (or the courtesy bus driver for that matter). Oh, and RM, when you return from your reunion, delete all your social media accounts. When the inevitable post-reunion Insta-stalk starts, you don’t want to be known as that sad old has-been who posts cat memes and Louise Hay affirmations. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

PORT Stephens Little Athletics have achieved outstanding results from the recent Zone Championships. The Zone Championships are conducted in each of the 24 zones throughout the state. Athletes in the age groups of U7 through to U17 are eligible for this event. Children progress to the Regional Championships from Zone and then to State. There are 11 Clubs in the Hunter zone ranging from Adamstown to the Myall Coast. Port Stephens Little Athletics sent 21 athletes to the Zone Championships, with these athletes competing in 66 events. The club returned home with a phenomenal 44 awards consisting of 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. Out of the 21 competitors, only two are in the U7 age group and are the only ones

funds for this worthwhile cause and we would thank our prize donors and the audience for their generosity,” Mrs Spencer told Bay News Of The Area. The new 2017 Office Bearers and Committee for Port Stephens Women in Business include President Kylie Smiley, Mobile Marketing Link, Vice President Amanda Gascoigne, The Biz Buddy, Secretary Louise Catlow, LMC Lawyers and Treasurer Deborah Laut, The Business Organiser. Committee Members are Emily Perry, Jane Parker, Peta Cussell, Bev Ryan, Melody Williams and Linda Scott. “2016 was a memorable year for our group,” Kylie Smiley, President PSWIB, said. “We introduced our new logo and developed a new website.” “Our members can now manage their own business page on the site and gain access to other information such as mentoring and educational resources, event details and highlights of guest speaker presentations,” Kylie Smiley added.

TWO young Corlette sports stars are among the latest winners of Federal Government Local Sporting Champion grants. Hockey player Joshua Bruton and touch player Amy Dufour were presented with their $500 grants by Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson last week. Joshua represented NSW in the under-13 state hockey team at the

National Championships held in October, and Amy was selected in the NSW Touch Development Team at the National Youth Championships in September. Ms Swanson met with the budding sporting champions at Nelson Bay last week to acknowledge their achievements and congratulate them on receiving the grants, which are aimed at helping them represent

NSW in their respective sports. “Amy and Joshua are fine young athletes and I congratulate them on their achievements,” Ms Swanson said. “Our community has a proud history of producing sporting champions, and it is important that we continue this tradition by supporting our champions of the future. “Succeeding in sport doesn’t just take talent and determination; it often requires great financial sacrifices. I’m

very pleased to be able to help these families with financial assistance through these grants.” Ms Swanson invited other young athletes who had been chosen to compete at a state, national or international event, to apply for a grant in the next round of applications. The round opens on March 1 and closes on June 30. For information visit http://www.ausport. gov.au/participating/ local_sporting_ champions

Local Junior LifeSaver Nominee LIKE US

www.newsofthearea.com.au

By Jewell DRURY THE next generation of leaders within the NSW Lifesaving movement will be put through their paces at an exciting Youth Development Camp at The Retreat, Anna Bay in January. All 13 Hunter SLSC Clubs in the Hunter Region have nominated a junior lifesaver to represent their branch for the opportunity to be crowned Junior Lifesaver of the Year and all will be attending the Youth Development Camp. This award is open only to junior club members in the U14 age group who have demonstrated dedication to their club and leadership potential throughout their time as juniors. Birubi Point’s SLSC NSW Junior Lifesaver nomination is 13-year-old Angus Tonks from Anna Bay. “I love helping the community and I love the water, so lifesaving is perfect

for me,” Angus Tonks told Bay News Of The Area. “I started Nippers last year and then went into Cadets this year; I was so excited to hear the news that I had been nominated,” Angus said. Each candidate gained their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) in the U14s of the current season, and have completed their time at ‘Nippers’, now graduating to serving on patrol in their SLS red and yellow uniform. Each candidate is interviewed and assessed on their knowledge of SLS, their active involvement within their own surf club and extended community, their leadership skills, communication and presentation skills, and their plans for their own future role within Surf Lifesaving. Many previous attendees of the camp have gone on to hold key leadership roles within their clubs and

branches and it is hoped that the class of 2017 will follow in their footsteps. An interview process will take place with one boy and one girl chosen to represent the Hunter Branch of SLSC, with the winners going forward to compete against other regions within NSW. The winner will then become the Junior Lifesaver of the Year. Birubi Point SLSC Youth Development Coordinator Sam Faragher, believes that while being named the NSW Junior Lifesaver of the year is a great achievement, the opportunity to make contact with young leaders from other clubs and be exposed to leadership techniques is a great benefit to all of those who attend. Bay News Of The Area wishes Angus Tonks all the best with his nomination and look forward to seeing what happens next in this young man’s life.
