Caring for our Youth By Jewell DRURY COPSY is a community group whose purpose is to ensure that the best possible independent Youth Health and Wellbeing Service is established to satisfy the needs of all young people who are at risk in Port Stephens. COPSY ordered a study to be conducted by researchers at the Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health based in Newcastle University which was funded by the Hunter New England Central Coast Primary Health Network and Port Stephens Council. The focus of the study was more than 10,000 children aged 12-24 years

Caring for our Youth... FROM Page 1 in the Port Stephens Local Government Area. Following literature reviews, interviews, questionnaires and two workshops, the research team found that the most common issues are anxiety, depression, alcohol and drug use. Factors associated with these experiences included histories of trauma,
violence in the home, family breakdowns and a lack of stable role models. Experiences of stigma and community disengagement from work, school and recreation also potentially exacerbated poor mental health. Previous studies have found one in six males aged 12-17 years experienced mental disorders and older youth aged 16-24 experienced more problems

Mr de Ridder also explained that this is not a COPSY project and that improving youth mental health in Port Stephens is a community project. The outcomes will be shared with youth at the second major youth mental health forum on 10 March, organised by the Youth Advisory Panel with the Port Stephens Council. The team on board “Reel Trouble” included Robert and Paige Fitzalan, Ray Wykes, Stephen Ritchie, Phil Smith from Bobs Farm, and Dean Gray

Robert Fitzalan from Forster and his team on board ”Reel Trouble” a 35ft Caribbean, had an unexpected surprise on day two which catapulted them into 11th position. Fourteen-year-old Paige Fitzalan, Robert’s daughter, tagged and released her first Marlin weighing approximately 140kg and received 12,500 points for her efforts. INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day, March 8, 2017, is a global day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. This year’s agenda encourages women to have an active part in changing the world around them through numerous methods including challenging bias and inequality by boycotting all-male speaking panels. Another way is by challenging stereotypes, calling it out when women are excluded, questioning all-male shortlists, monitoring the gender pay gap, pointing out bias and highlighting an alternative, embracing inclusive leadership and redefining the status quo. The organisation begs women to campaign against violence by educating youth about positive relationships, to challenge those who justify perpetrators and blame victims, to donate to groups fighting abuse, to speak out against the silence of violence, to be vigilant and report violence and to campaign for the prevention of violence. Forging Women’s Advancement is another point of the agenda with advice to decide to buy from companies that support women, choosing to work for a progressive employer of women, to support or back a female-owned business, to take a junior female colleague

The powerful stories have come from women of all different ages and levels of education and from a variety of

The tickets for the lunch cost $50 and funds raised will be donated to a variety of Rotary Community projects including Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services and in support of PNG Family planning. THE World Day Of Prayer takes place Friday March 3, and is a worldwide movement of Christian Women of many traditions, in more than 170 countries, coming together for a day of prayer each year. Women are drawn together from different races, cultures and traditions in order to pray for the nations. The world day of prayer creates an awareness of the whole world and a reminder that we do not live in isolation of each other. Each year a new country and its people are under the spotlight as the whole world focuses on them in prayer. This year the country chosen is The Philippines.
On the Tomaree Peninsula, World Day of Prayer is being hosted by Beachside Church, Taylors Beach and everyone is invited. The day begins at 11am. “We are wanting to invite the Filipinos in our community to come along and be our special guests,” Bill Brill, Pastor of Beachside Church told Bay News Of The Area. Special Guest speakers are Stephen and Helen Blake who have worked in the Philippines over the past 25 years and in other nations such as Turkey and Vanuatu. regarding his council strip, which he can no longer maintain. After being advised that council had received complaints about the state of the council strip, Geoff contacted the Council and was very impressed when he found the staff member helpful and understanding of his situation. He was even more impressed when an offer to send out a team to cut the grass was made, which of course he accepted. At this stage though, he is unsure if this is a long-term offer of support or a one off. With declining health and mobility, Geoff is unable
to maintain his garden and told News Of The Area, “It’s not that I don’t care, I simply physically can’t do it now. I’ve planted fruit trees and put in an irrigation system and now I sit back and look at it going to waste, it frustrates me as I know what needs to be done.” He said, “I have a ride on mower, if someone wants to come and cut the grass for me they can use it, but I can’t.” If you have a couple of hours free and would like to support Geoff in getting his garden back to how it once was or are able to help him maintain the council strip, please contact Mandy at mandy@newsofthearea.com. au.
The Gift of Tennis to Students By Jewell DRURY
THE Anna Bay Public School Senior Students Tennis 8-week Program beginning Term Two, aims to give a total of eight professional tennis lessons for each student. Garry Custer, a professional Tennis Coach, is assisted on the courts with the assigned class teacher and three or four responsible adult volunteers. Student numbers range from 20 to 26 in each session, attending for four sessions in Year 5 and again in Year 6. In 2017, the tennis coaching program enters its seventh year and is again expecting around 100 Anna Bay students to participate with 584 children having already participated in the program. The program is a community gift to the school, students and school parents. As head tennis coach, Garry Custer, former Tennis Pro, developed the unique Anna Bay Public School Tennis Program. It aims to encourage students in the basics of playing tennis, from the rules of the game to the basic stroke techniques, in a disciplined yet fun environment. Garry combines professionalism
with a sense of humour while he imparts knowledge and skill. Sponsors, along with the Boat Harbour and One Mile communities and the occasional grant, have raised the funds required to conduct these special annual senior tennis coaching classes. The Boat Harbour Community also provide the racquets and balls required for the School Tennis Program. To date the Boat Harbour Recreation Club has managed to raise in excess of $35,500 for this school gift to our very young community members. A Community award was presented to the founder of the program, Coral Kearins of Boat Harbour Recreation Club, during 2016 Education Week, for the co-ordination and organisation of the annual Anna Bay Public School Senior Tennis Coaching program. Coral Kearins told Bay News Of The Area, “There would be no tennis program without the wonderful Fogg Family, Port Stephens Coaches and the myriad of sponsors throughout the years.” “It is a gift to the students of Anna Bay School by our wonderful community, and we could not do any of it without
them,” Ms Kearins said. Bay News Of The Area applauds Ms Kearin’s commitment to the children in our community through this wonderful program.

IT was standing room only at at the Tomaree Ratepayers and Residents Association’s general meeting with approximately 200 residents in attendance. Concerns regarding building heights in Nelson Bay’s town centre and surrounding ridges provided the basis for discussion. Council planners David Rowland and Jeff Bretag from Council’s Planning Department presented central points raised in the ‘Progress of the Nelson Bay Town Centre and Foreshore Strategy’ discussion paper. Since its adoption in 2012, the strategy has sought to guide town planning. Responding to comments from TRRA’s president Geoff Washington that there has to date been “a failure to implement many of the recommendations” from the strategy, David Rowland said the public submissions were an opportunity to assist Port Stephens Council in determining how to make the plan “come to fruition”. Mr Rowland said it was important for residents to make themselves heard regarding “expectations, what you want to protect [and] what you want to enhance”. Resident George Allen used the analogy of a pleasure boat to describe development concerns. “We are quite happy as it is,” he said to applause from audience members.
“It’s a bit like a pleasure boat; if we have too many in it, it is not pleasurable.” Feasibility studies on building heights relating to profitability levels were presented leading to intense discussion, particularly in relation to the Donald Street East modelling which was deemed unprofitable unless it was over 17 storeys. Nigel Waters from TRRA also addressed the meeting stating that discussions about building heights and density “appear to conveniently support development”. Resident Sue Olsson suggested that “a far more innovative approach to buildings” would be a step forward and that there were important considerations to be taken into account including “bringing green community spaces into the town”. David Rowland stressed that it was vital that residents forward their submissions in the allocated timeframe in order to make their voices heard. “We are doing this as a pre-conversation,” he said. “We have to work out the best way.” Public submissions can be made prior to 5pm on 13 March 2017 via the haveyoursayportstephens. com.au link. Residents can also attend an information session at the Sacred Tree Markets, d’Albora Marinas, between 4-8pm on Friday 10 March.

Dear HP, YOU know, HP, this is one of my bugbears. It is to do with sheep or, more specifically, people behaving like sheep. There are clearly marked trolley bays at Salamander Shopping Centre, and very helpful trolley collectors who will happily take your trolley before you’ve even finished emptying it. Why, then, do shoppers insist on leaving them in between cars, or else parked amongst the very minimal vegetation? Do they think their trolley will sprout baby trolleys if left in the dirt? Then there are people who try to shove their Woolies trolley into the Aldi bay or their Coles trolley into the library book shute. Sheer insanity, HP. How about the patrons who balance their trolley against a pole, knowing full well that it’ll slide down the path and into a Mitsubishi with just the hint of a breeze. You need to park your car as far away from other cars as possible. This drives my family members out of their minds. They have been known to exit my moving vehicle because it takes me so long to select an appropriate car space. “Can’t you see that?” they yell. I pay them no heed, HP, and I can assure you my chassis is dent free. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Student Executive.” “We would like to see people learning how to be nice to one another by co-operating, working as a team and respecting one another.” “This position teaches us to take responsibility, show respect and do your personal best.”
q Rylee Moses Kinkaid, School Captain.
q Student Executive, Rylee Moses Kinkaid, Jamee Lee Coughlin, Riley Shaw, Abigail Deacon, Ben Barwood, Aishat Kareem and Lachlan Bartlett Baldwin. “This will be a positive influence in the future as it also allows us the opportunity to speak in front of others and improve our public speaking skills and confidence.”

Bras for the Nations By Jewell DRURY
LOCAL Business Woman Anita Marshall, has inspired local women and beyond with her generous passion to provide bras and baby clothes to the people of Vanuatu, Fiji and the Kimberley Missions. Ms Marshall, a Salamander Bay resident of more than 46 years, is passionate about giving back to those who are in need. The women of Vanuatu are in desperate need of bras which cost the same amount as one month’s wage. For this reason, it is understandable that a
woman would not have a bra as her main priority. Anita looks for people going on holidays to Vanuatu or Fiji to deliver the bras and baby clothes for her to the villagers. “We took 300 bras on our most recent trip to Vanuatu, thanks to the donations from some very generous ladies in our area,” Ms Marshall told Bay News Of The Area. “The response was so overwhelming, we gave them out to the ladies at our resort, ladies in restaurants and bars, at the markets and we set up a stall in one of the local villages,” Anita said. When Ms Marshall first met “Teacher Mary”, the only equipment Mary had to

Leap of Faith and Love By Jewell DRURY THIS week, Bay News Of The Area had the opportunity to sit down and talk to Cindy and Ron Gurr in their Nelson Bay home. Originally hailing from Zimbabwe, the pair met when they began dating at the age of 16 and 17 years of age. After several months the relationship was broken off after an untruth was told to Ron about Cindy. Both felt strongly for the other, but each went their separate ways. Fast forward to June 2011, when after more than 40 years, Cindy looked
up Ron on Facebook and found him living in Perth, Australia. “I couldn’t believe that the years had been so good to her,” Mr Gurr told Bay News Of The Area. The pair messaged each other for several months, they skyped, spoke over the phone and it didn’t take long to rekindle the love they once felt for each other all those years ago back in Zimbabwe. On the 1 June 2013, Ron and Cindy became Mr and Mrs Gurr. Late December 2016, Ron was offered an opportunity for a business prospect here in Nelson Bay. Ten days later, they both took the leap of faith and gave the majority of their
belongings to charity and drove 4000 kms across the Nullabor. Ron is a classically trained singer, singing at hotels, restaurants and retirement homes. Cindy is an accomplished author with three books she has previously written with her newest novel called “The Dark Side Of Revenge,” a story about bravery and resourcefulness in the face of abuse and retribution. Available through Amazon, it stands as a testament to those who have suffered many forms of abuse at the hands of those who should love and protect them. “I believe that everything I went through in my life

Spearos Dive for Shark Victim OVER 50 competitors entered the Big Fish Competition in Nelson Bay to compete for prizes and raise money for shark attack victim Glenn Dickson. Mr Dickson was attacked while spearfishing off Hinchinbrook Island in Far North Queensland. He later had his leg amputated. Competitors raced to familiar dive spots including Broughton Island, with some venturing as far as Seal Rocks in their quest to catch the biggest fish. The Newcastle Neptunes hold the Port Stephens competition to encourage sustainable fishing methods.
