ANNA Bay as well as Raymond Terrace residents last week welcomed the dedicated volunteers of Orange Sky Laundry and DARA’s van to their suburbs, and they’ll be back every week! Staffed solely by volunteers, these two services work hand in hand to provide support to the community across several areas during the week. Orange Sky Laundry offers residents a chance to wash their clothes, while DARA’s van provides you a home cooked delicious meal. The volunteers from Orange Sky Laundry and DARA, which stands for development and relief agency, provide hospitality
and friendship to anyone in need, offering you a warm meal, a clean load of clothes and a friendly ear. This collaborative team offers an invaluable service to a growing number of visitors to the vans across Newcastle and Port Stephens each week. DARA Chief Officer Barry Urwin told News Of The Area, “This service is open to people from all walks of life, no cards or concessions are needed, we just aim to support the whole community.” “As with all new services, it will take time for the word to spread around, but we’d like some families to come down, have a meal with us, wash some clothes and take a little bit of pressure off the week.” “Our volunteers
at all venues are kind, compassionate people who just want to contribute to the community, so we’re looking forward to getting to know lots of new faces,” he said. DARA’s Van and Orange Sky laundry will be at Anna Bay every Monday from 6-8:30pm at the All Saints Anglican Church. They will be in Raymond Terrace every Wednesday night from 6-8:30pm, behind the Marketplace Shopping Centre in the Bourke Street Car park next to the Skate Park. There is also a current opening for more Volunteers to be a ‘Van Assistant’, which can be found on seek.com Spread the word and make sure our community knows about this very important new program.

Rotarians Make Great Neighbours
By Marian SAMPSON
ROTARIANS make good neighbours, and you couldn’t beat the neighbourly acts that the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay do, for our nearest neighbours in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The Club supports Spacim Pikinini which provides women’s health, family planning, medical support and safe birth services to women in remote and poverty stricken areas of PNG. Through the vessel Kula Spirit they have created a sustainable, capacity building service within the remote communities, helping to educate and empower the locals to reduce the devastating child mortality rates in PNG. Wendy Stein, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay and creator of the Spacim Pikinini program told News Of The Area, “It’s a big job; 20 percent of children in PNG under five years of age who die, do so suffering needlessly from curable illnesses.” She believes the key to helping

THE poppies adorning the front of Wests Nelson Bay Diggers on Remembrance Day will be even more impressive this year with 1,000 red poppies honouring wartime efforts. They were lovingly knitted by Club member Eunice Locock. “It is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by the men and women in all conflicts and peacekeeping operations and all those service personnel who are no longer with us,” Nelson Bay RSL sub-branch Secretary Russell Durrant said. Eight poppies for local men who did not return from war will be placed in a separate area. There will also be purple poppies displayed to represent the actions and sacrifices of animals. “It is really pleasing to see the work that Eunice has done to create 1000 poppies and the support from other Diggers Club members and staff in mounting and placing the poppies,” Mr Durrant said. Coming up for Wendy and the crew of Kula Spirit is a trip to the Treaty Islands where villagers will paddle to the clinics and the Spacim Pikinini team will train the female Rangers to deliver health outcomes for the people.

News Of The Area, “I like to be of assistance and to get better results for the community.” Although now retired Geoff believes that he has a wealth of knowledge that our community can benefit from. He believes that local groups like the TRRA and Landcare groups have had a positive impact on the region. “It is a pity that the town centre area of Nelson Bay doesn’t have a Landcare Group as this would improve the look of the township.” Through his role with the TRRA he believes that the group has assisted in improving plans and outcomes for the area. “We drill down through the facts to get to the bottom of things and we monitor council activities, we are keen to see a new town centre strategy with view sharing and good parking ratios,” he said. Geoff has a vision to see a museum and interpretative centre built at Nelson Bay which would encompass the regions natural history, indigenous history and culture and war history. He believes that the community may be able to access Federal Government Grant Schemes to fund a project of this scope.
By Marian SAMPSON YOU know that a couple is truly in love and committed to each other when they reach their 60th wedding anniversary. Local Salamander Bay couple Margaret and Barry Jones are about to celebrate their 60th anniversary. The couple met in Orange at a dance, but Margaret had noticed Barry earlier that day and told the girls she was with that the guy over there was a good sort. When they were married they were very young and Barry’s father said the couple would not last together longer than a year. The couple have enjoyed 60 years of marriage and have three children Lyn, Kaylene and Kerry, 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Barry Jones told News Of The Area, “The secret to a long marriage is give and take, and having no secrets from each other.” Barry believes that helping out with the cooking and housework is also good for a marriage.

Dear Jasminda,
I’m not sure if my daughter is studying or not. Each time I go to her room, her head is buried in her laptop, but how do I know if she is learning her work, or engaging in other activities? Mrs BS, Salt Ash Dear Ms BS,
I have a teenage daughter, so I am cued in to some of the subtleties of distinguishing between study and social media. You need to observe her facial expressions. If she has a smirk on her face, she probably isn’t finding the constant of proportionality on the maths exam practice paper. Instead, she is no doubt planning end-of-year parties or deciding which of 50 Snapchat filters she will use. Is she sobbing about how maths sucks and has no value in the real world, or is she making peace signs into her phone and giggling? The first is a sign of study (albeit frantic study the night before the exam rather than weekly revision). The second is her careful planning for a 1970s-themed ‘gatho’ with 300 hyped-up teens at a house with no parental supervision. Is she making comments such as, “Who cares about onomatopoeia? I mean, really, who cares about this stuff? Who even made up a word as insane as that?” or is she saying, “Mum, the Wifi keeps dropping out!” The latter is a clear indication that social media activities are well and truly underway. You need to get your daughter out of her bedroom and into the dining room. Even though this will ruin your weekend, you will be able to furtively glance at her laptop at regular intervals, and ensure she is experiencing the same misery we all had to endure as teenagers. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

POLITICIANS AT WORK
Part of a coordinated strategy for economic growth
PORT Stephens Council is working in collaboration with the NSW Government and six local councils to develop a coordinated strategy for economic growth in the Hunter. The Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS) will be used to inform regional development policy and identify actions that can be undertaken to support economic growth across Port Stephens, Cessnock, Dungog, Maitland, Muswellbrook, Singleton, and Upper Hunter
Shire council areas. Jane Perrin, Council’s Economic Development Coordinator, says the strategy will guide the NSW Government’s budget allocation of $1.3 billion for regional NSW through the Regional Growth Fund. “The regional strategy is designed to support greater access to grant funding and increased investment opportunities throughout the Hunter,” she said. Ms Perrin says that in order to develop the strategy,
feedback is being sought by Sapere Research Group. “To promote economic growth in the Hunter, we need to hear from our local community, business and industry on what they think are the key opportunities and challenges facing industries,” Ms Perrin said. “The survey only takes about 10-15 minutes and it is the best way for people to have their say on how this strategy can best encourage growth in our region, including key infrastructure
PORT Stephens Council has taken out the award for ‘Excellence in Workplace Health and Safety Culture for big business’ at the 2017 Safe Work NSW Awards. The awards recognise businesses and workers with the highest standards of workplace health and safety and return to work outcomes in the state. General Manager Wayne Wallis acknowledged the efforts of the whole team for
this impressive win. “For Port Stephens Council to be recognised as having the best Work Health and Safety culture in the State is an amazing achievement,” Mr Wallis said. “Developing a workplace culture isn’t a simple fix; it takes a mammoth team effort over a long period of time to establish and maintain, and that’s what we’ve been able to achieve. “This award is truly a credit to each and every Council worker. I would also like to acknowledge Council’s
Work Health and Safety team, past and present, for their efforts in driving this culture change,” he added. Nicole Le Grange, Council’s Work Health and Safety Manager, says it’s wonderful to see the team rewarded for their hard work. “Port Stephens Council has made vast improvements to our safety practices over the past six years. We’ve gone from a poor performer in some areas, to the best in the state, which is why this Award means so much,” Ms
Bay). This is to overcome traffic congestion during the short holiday periods. Is it really justifiable to spend $50$100 million (or probably more) on a project that has such limited benefit? Wouldn’t an extension to the existing hospital benefit local residents far more. Another issue is the environmental cost. The current proposed route appears to be mainly through native forest areas. Once again it seems to me to be difficult to justify destroying extensive native habitat for such limited benefit. Don’t we already have enough roadkill! Some have suggested that the bypass would provide an alternative
escape route during bushfires. It could be argued that as the road would mainly traverse bushland, it is more likely to be cutoff by bushfires than the existing access. A properly conceived evacuation plan (possibly by water) would be a far more cost-effective and viable alternative. Transport-wise, I would prefer to see a feasibility study by Port Stephens Council on a light-rail project from Shoal Bay to Newcastle Airport. Such a piece of infrastructure would stimulate economic growth and be far more environmentally sound. Both local residents and tourists would benefit.

priorities. “The results of this survey will provide valuable inputs into the analysis that forms the basis of the new economic development strategy,” she said. Responses are strictly confidential and will only be used to determine group responses and specific industry suggestions for improving regional economic development opportunities. To complete the survey, visit https:// www.surveymonkey.com/ r/22HDDKN by Friday 17 November 2017. Le Grange said. “Our commitment to safety has resulted in less workplace injuries, less severe injuries and a reduction in workers compensation premiums – saving Council over a million dollars per year. “But it doesn’t end here. We’ll continue to work hard to ensure that every worker goes home in the same, or better, physical and mental condition than when they arrived at work,” she added. The 2017 SafeWork NSW Award winners were announced last week at Doltone House in Sydney.
Bypass the Fingal Bay Bypass?
OPINION Dear News Of The Area, WHILST willing to be convinced otherwise, I find it difficult to justify promoting the proposed Fingal Bay Bypass. On a cost-benefit basis, it would seem to be a low priority in the list of the needs of the Bay area. As locals would know, Fingal Bay is a small, secluded and beautiful area. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the naysayers of the ‘antidevelopment’ groups could do something positive for a change and support this initiative. Tourists could travel directly to and from the airport to their destinations in Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay. Local residents could be transported around the Bay Area and possibly to and from Newcastle. If planned properly to take advantage of the fantastic scenery (the ride itself becoming a tourist attraction), the Bay could be turned into a world class tourist destination. Paul Attard Nelson Bay

with petitions and residents submissions against the proposed development on the parcel of land adjacent to the Mambo Wanda Wetlands. The Mambo Wanda Wetlands Conservation Group with their koala mascot delivered the mayor with a very clear message from the community of Port Stephens that any development on this land is unacceptable. 1094 residents signed the petition against the development and the group also presented plus 535 individual submissions which will be added to those which have been submitted to council direct.
Conservation Group believes that any development would irreparably damage an environment with high ecological values, including habitat of the endangered Port Stephens koala population and other threatened species.

DESTINATION Port Stephens members gathered to make changes to the constitution which will see representation on the board of management change from 2018. The various categories represented on the board will be removed. Destination Port Stephens member and tourism operator Frank Future of Imagine Cruises was voted onto the board with a margin of one vote beating Elyse Larkham of Moonshadow Cruises. Frank Future told News Of The Area, “I believe that the greatest benefit to tourism in this region will be the establishment of a World Heritage Listing for Port Stephens.” He believes that the region can achieve the listing in the next few years. “The other thing I would like to see is the establishment of an interpretive centre which focuses on nature, and

Premier’s Flying Visit to Bay By Marian SAMPSON
WHEN the Premier takes the time to pop in we know that Port Stephens is definitely on the radar. NSW Premier The Hon Gladys Berejiklian MP popped into Nelson Bay and addressed Liberal Party Country Convention The Premier was welcomed to Port Stephens by Local Councillor and Liberal Party Branch President Jaimie Abbott, who took the opportunity to add a number of issues to the State Government’s to-do list, including future protection of Mambo Wetlands, construction of Fingal Bay Link Road and infrastructure needs around housing growth in Medowie and the Tomaree Peninsula. Delegates from all over NSW including Tweed, Dubbo and Monaro in the south visited Port Stephens where the Party focused on a wide range of issues including delivering better public services and “keeping young people in the bush.
Members of NSW Parliament were also in attendance at the Conference including Minister for the Hunter Scot MacDonald. The NSW State Government has set up a $1.3 billion dollar Regional Growth Fund. While addressing the floor Premier Berejiklian said, “If you are a business that wants to set up shop in a regional town and bring jobs but there’s a road, or utilities need to be established then we can provide that support in-kind, to make sure that there’s an incentive to set up your business here.” She believes that there is no better way of supplying stability and dignity to people than to have a secure job that rewards and provides satisfaction, through meaningful work. Miss Abbott believes that she has showcased our greatest needs to the Premier over the past few days, taking time to address the communities’ concerns surrounding Mambo Wanda Wetlands and the proposed development and the vital
Fingal Bay Road Link, and believes that Port Stephens is definitely in the Liberal Party’s sights. “It’s a great honour for Port Stephens to host this event. I have also
encouraged all the delegates who attended the conference, to take extra time after the meeting to explore our beautiful landscapes and natural environment,” said Miss Abbott.
Singlets and t-shirts were on sale raising over $1400 in vital funds for the Yacaaba Centre. Among the runners was Port Stephens Councillor Sarah Smith who told News Of The Area “I have participated in Reclaim the Run every year, since it started, it’s getting bigger and better and starting conversations which gets people talking and letting victims of domestic violence know that there are people there to help them.” “What has occurred with this event in Port Stephens is quite unique, the
enthusiasm and support of the Port Stephens community is something locals can be incredibly proud of,” said Kirrily Dear. Port Stephens Member Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “It is amazing to see such a great turnout raising awareness, and reducing the stigma attached to domestic violence, which is so important.” She believes the fight for equality is one that women still need to win which is linked to domestic violence. “Everyone that is here is part of a movement, one
that it getting bigger around the state. We need to look at the root cause of domestic violence and address it; inequality and gender pay gap are a part of the problem,” she said. Mayor Ryan Palmer recognised the strength and courage it takes for those impacted by domestic violence to be a part of the event. “Violence against women is never OK, we need to shine a light, start conversations and send a clear message,” he said.

Inaugural Tournament for Juniors and Cadets
Two athletes eyeing games championships
Highlights of the week:
FROM Page 16
President of the Port Stephens Athletics Club told News Of The Area, “Lilly can throw a discus 35 metres.” He believes it is a great achievement for the girls to attend the Pacific School Games in Adelaide competing in the athletics category; these games are held every other year. “Port Stephens Athletics Club accepts members all year and kids who participate get to enjoy the camaraderie, create friendships, participate in the competition and gain a sense of achievement,” he said. Bob has been involved in training athletics for over thirty years and originally got involved when his children were participating in athletics, he has continued to be a part of the athletics community even after moving to the bay in the past two years.

NELSON Bay Golf Club held their inaugural Tournament for Juniors and Cadets on Sunday 22nd October. The event was extremely well supported attracting many keen youngsters under 18. Players were from as far away as Kew to the north and Bowral to the south. Wonderful support from dedicated parents as well. 28 Juniors, handicaps ranging from 1 to 36, played on the full length championship course. A total of 21 Cadets played on a shortened, 6 hole course. The Overall Boys’ Scratch Winner was Connor Benjamin with a superb par round of 72. The Overall Girls’ Scratch Winner was Celine Chin from Gosford with an excellent round of 88. The Golf Club was very pleased with the response from players and their parents. Plans are in place to ensure an even better day next year when, hopefully, even more Juniors and Cadets will be attracted to Nelson Bay’s Championship Course.
