Brickfest is coming back to the Bay at the all new location of Anna Bay Public School over the weekend of 6-7 January, 2018. This year Brickfest will be held with proceeds going to the Tomaree High School Robotics program. Each year Brickfest contributes to a different cause in Port Stephens, Kevin Evans who is running the event got involved with Lego as a child, and again when his son started playing and learning with Lego when he was aged 5. Kevin Evans “We got the tower bridge kit and it snowballed from there.” He believes that anyone can build with Lego. “Lego can be used for basic robotics, you can learn a lot from Lego and there is a certain amount of precision,” he said. Brickfest will have displays of Lego that are hands off, but there are also speed building competitions and a build area for children to explore after they have viewed the displays. Tickets for Brickfest are available at the door, children must be accompanied by an adult, however Brickfest is not an event just for kids as anyone aged 6-99 can enjoy Lego.

local community will see immediate benefits from the works across the Salamander Central precinct. “Salamander Central has never looked better – there’s now a dedicated bus interchange, a new road called Terminus Parade, shared pathways throughout the centre for better accessibility and traffic lights at Bagnall Beach Road to improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians,” Ms Foster said.
“The new bus interchange will be used exclusively for buses, while the existing bus stop will be turned into a taxi rank. Community buses will still be able to use the rank as a pick up/drop off area to ensure for easy accessibility. “The new traffic lights at Bagnall Beach Road will make crossing much safer for pedestrians, while drivers will be able to turn right out of the centre with two dedicated lanes to alleviate traffic,” she said.

Never Too Old
By Marian SAMPSON
HARBOURSIDE Haven residents are proving that you are never too old. Resident Gwen Smith, who is a sprightly and somewhat glamorous 90 year old recently formed the “Village Singers”. Bringing together a small group of former choristers who have joined to sing and have fun while keeping themselves and others entertained at their retirement village. Gwen who was a famous Musical Comedy star in her heyday, told News Of The Area, “Just because one is living in a retirement village, it doesn’t mean you are retired from living to the full, having fun dressing up and planning events.”
She believes that singing together also has many health benefits- it boosts the immune and breathing systems, aids in memory retention, posture and self-confidence. Ron and Diana Souter who spent many years as a part of the Seaside Singers were also co-opted to assist with the Village Singers’ first concert which truly delighted the residents and staff. Diana Souter told News Of The Area, “It was an absolute joy to work with the Village Singers and to see them enjoy themselves is a real privilege.” Gwen welcomes more singers and would love to hear from other retirement village residents who would like to join her little choir. You can find out more about joining the Village Singers by calling 0404 732 314.

Water Safety First!
By Heather SHARP
WITH a scorching summer
already in full swing, with temperatures in January expected to continue to soar,
water safety is a top priority for the local swimming pools. To aid in ensuring that
the safety of young children is prioritised, Belgravia Leisure, that run Lakeside (Raymond
Terrace) Leisure Centre, Tomaree Aquatic Centre, Tilligerry Aquatic Centre, and Kurri Kurri Aquatic and Fitness, have instigated a new safety program. Ms Tanya Brunckhorst, Regional Manager of Royal Life Saving told News Of The Area, “The Keep Watch wristband is for every children five and under.” “They will be given a wristband that is compulsory to wear so the lifesavers know they need to be within an arm’s reach of the parent or adult in charge of the child.” The wristbands are a waterproof paper type, similar to what people get given at paid recreation events and do not interfere with children’s movements in the pool. The wristbands, Ms Brunckhorst said are about, “Identifying the nonswimmers and making parents more responsible and the children under their care being in arm’s reach.”
“The lifesavers are not babysitters.” Ms Nicole Dunn, the Area Manager said, “Any child in the pool without an adult supervising them will be asked by a lifesaver to leave and find their parent or caregiver.” “We will explain the safety issues to the responsible adult.” “It is designed around education of parents and families when they come to the Centre.” Belgravia facilities have recently undergone a safety audit, with Mr Troy Hughes, the Operations Manager pleased with the result, telling News Of The Area, Lakeside scored 95%, Tomaree 94%, Tilligerry 89% and Kurri Kurri 93%.” “These are all excellent results.” The audits are conducted by the Royal Life Saving NSW Aquatic Safety Check and these results are considered exemplary.

Bay Priest Bishop-Elect
By Marian SAMPSON WE’D like to introduce Father Brian Mascord Bishop-Elect. Fr Brian Mascord was the parish priest at Nelson Bay for over five years, and he is still well regarded in the Bay community which he recently visited. The Holy Father Pope Francis has appointed Fr Brian Mascord, currently the Vicar General of the Diocese of MaitlandNewcastle, the fifth Bishop of Wollongong. Australian Catholic Bishops Conference president Archbishop Denis Hart said BishopElect Mascord brings a wealth of experience in parish ministry, education, chaplaincy and governance. “Fr Mascord has been a
fine, hard-working parish priest for many years and will be a worthy Bishop of Wollongong. I congratulate him on his appointment on behalf of the Australian bishops,” Archbishop Hart said. Father Brian Mascord Bishop Elect told News Of The Area, “As Bishop I will be responsible for leading the catholic community in Wollongong.” He will be travelling to Rome in 2018 to undertake Bishop School and Fr Brian Mascod BishopElect admitted that he will be doing his work for the Church in what can only be described as difficult times. “The idea of being a bishop was quite strange to me as my role as a priest has been to serve the people, I will now be working with
priests and allowing them to be of service to gods’ people and to encourage them,” he said. In addition to parish appointments across many parts of the Diocese, BishopElect Mascord has served as vocations director since 2007 and has been Vicar General since 2012. He has been a longstanding member of the Council of Priests and is currently a member of the diocesan Clergy Life and Ministry Team and the National Council for Clergy Life and Ministry. In announcing Bishop-Elect Mascord’s appointment, Pope Francis also accepted Bishop Ingham’s resignation. The catholic community of the Bay will miss Fr Brian Mascord Bishop-Elect.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
I spent a lot of time coming up with appropriate gifts for my husband for Christmas. He opened the first one and said nothing. I jokingly suggested I regift it and he agreed. He opened the second one, which I had unfortunately left the price tag on, and he said, “You didn’t pay that much for this did you?” My daughter then ran to her room and screamed that he had ruined Christmas. We are still getting over it. Mrs JF, One Mile Dear Mrs JF,
Your husband sounds like the Christmas grinch. He obviously hasn’t been taught the subtleties of gift receiving. This is a skill developed over many years of receiving things that we don’t actually want, or even need, but we still have the ability to show, even feign, delight. It is a key learning area. Perhaps your husband has a deepseated resentment of Christmas that stems from childhood. Nothing short of the psychoanalyst’s couch will be able to cure that one. But you could offer him some cues for the future. These are appropriate comments when you receive a gift you don’t really like: “You shouldn’t have.” (You really shouldn’t have). “I have no words.” (If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything). “I’m feeling overwhelmed.” (I’m going to need a couple of drinks to come up with an appropriate response). “Oh, wow, it matches the gift that you gave me last year.” (There’s a whole range of this hideous stuff?). “I know the perfect spot for this.” (I knew that storage cabinet would come in handy). “It’s perfect. Did you keep the receipt in case I need the next size up?” (My left leg wouldn’t fit into those shorts, you moron). I hope that 2018 is an improvement on this year, Mrs JF, and that your husband becomes the man you deserve. Interestingly, we have the same initials. You must be a lovely person. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

New Sport In Port By Marian SAMPSON
PORT Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer enthusiastically took the first kick at the recent launch of Port Stephens new sport FootGolf. The second kick was taken by Selva Saverimuttu, Chairman Horizons FootGolf and Horizons Golf Resort. FootGolf is an affordable game that takes place on the fairways of golf courses around the world with 20 courses in NSW participating in the sport, including in Port Stephens at Horizons Golf Resort. It is played using the rules of golf using a size 5 soccer ball and using the par rating of the hole, FootGolf holes are closed during regular golf play. At the launch of the game, one round of the FootGolf World Tour was held at
Horizons Golf Resort. Bob Westbury Director of Horizons Golf Resort told News Of The Area, “Horizons is excited to be the only accredited FootGolf course in Port Stephens.” He believes that in opening the course to the sport that Horizons will engage with a much wider audience, and they are looking to a future which will welcome families, schools and sports leagues through to play this new fun sport. “New sports and activities that families can get involved with are great for Port Stephens, and tourism, families and locals can put teams together and visitors to the region can also give this sport a try,” he said. Mayor Ryan Palmer said “I think FootGolf will be a great addition to the activities Port

Leonardo Fernandez said “I have been talking to the World Tour players here today and they have already said that this is one of the best FootGolf Courses they have played at so far. The locals tested out FootGolf and first placed and congratulations go to Andrew Kirk, Jai Pyke, Daniel Macca and Matt Cole from Nelson Bay FC who have took out the Inaugural title. Country Women For Women By Marian SAMPSON
THE Country Women’s Association (CWA) is about far more than scones jam and cream. It’s about women doing things for women. The ladies who make up this organisation are a community which offers friendship and supports each other in times of need. Carol Rigby who is the Secretary of the Nelson Bay Country Women’s Association told News Of The Area, “We raise money for country projects,
“CWA also funded water tanks in Nepal after the earthquakes and we make packs for the women living in third world countries with sanitary items in them,” she said. There are two branches of the CWA in Nelson Bay one meets during the day and the other in the evenings. CWA is open to all women living in the area and offers a way to make a positive difference in the community.

Bay’s Pasta Masters comes down to skill and technique.” Domenica puts the success of the pasta down to the time she spent cooking and learning in her mother’s kitchen. “We’re proud to see our pasta on menus at local restaurants like Little Beach Boathouse, Sandpipers, Little Nel and the Crowne Plaza in the Hunter Valley as well as being served in restaurants locally we are also in restaurants in Brisbane,” she said. While the traditional
recipes come from the traditions of the Italian Calebresian regions home kitchens with wonderful warming osso bucco stuffed pastas and lasagne, Pasta Di Porto also create wonderful modern pasta options including their delectable Blue Swimmer Crab and Leek ravioli. While you can visit the premises in Anna Bay and have a great coffee and buy pasta and sauce to cook at home, the team do not serve cooked meals on site.

paramount. “Shari did very well,” she said. Lilly Mullane from the Bay also competed at the games coming fourth in the 11yrs Discus. It was a fantastic experience to attend the games for both Shari Hurdman and Lilly Mullane, they both forged many friendships with their fellow NSW teammates and competed with students from around the Pacific region. The 2017 Pacific School Games Adelaide is proudly recognised by the Australian Olympic Committee as an Olympic Education Program. For both Lilly Mullane and Shari Hurdman performing well at an Australian Olympic Committee recognised program is recognition of the high standards which they have both achieved in their sports.
