Baptisms at Fishermans Bay By Jewell DRURY

FISHERMANS Bay has been the recent site for multiple baptisms. Most people associate baptisms with the sprinkling of water over a baby’s head, but there is so much more to this biblical tradition. Reverend Kesh Govan from All Saints Anglican Church conducts Baptisms regularly and has chosen Fishermans Bay as the venue for this holy event. According to the biblical interpretation, baptism in the early centuries was by immersion. “Baptisms are such a great community event,” Rev Kesh Govan told Bay News Of The Area. Recent baptisms at Fishermans Bay included Jack Torr, Jamie Torr and Pat Allsopp.

Jack Torr is 17 and is one of the Pastors of All Saints Anglican Church in Anna Bay which opened last October as a mission church from All

Saints Anglican Nelson Bay. Jamie Torr, Jack’s father, joined All Saints at Nelson Bay two years ago after he came along to a ‘Christmas in July’ event. “I enjoyed it so much, I stayed,” Mr Torr said. Mr Torr is also actively involved in All Saints Anglican Anna Bay, in fact father and son preach regularly there.

Pat Allsopp joined All Saints Anglican Church at Nelson Bay last year and wanted to make her faith public through her baptism. Pat in her younger days was a bass player and singer in a 60s all-girl band called the Pebbles Show Band. “We love holding community events and bringing people together,”

awaiting the outcome of Council’s own community consultation process. The proposed development for 11-13 Church Street, Nelson Bay will reach a height of 32 metres, on land zoned for a maximum of 15 metres. Port Stephens Council had recently sought community feedback on the future of Nelson Bay’s CBD but the final report from this consultation has not yet been presented to Council. Kate Washington MP said, “Once again,

c

FROM Page 1

Mayor Mackenzie and his voting bloc have ignored community opposition and pushed through their high rise development agenda.” “But it gets worse. They’ve entirely ignored their own consultation process which was designed to address exactly this issue they’ve now decided on.” Hundreds of submissions were lodged and a well-attended community meeting resoundingly expressed opposition to increasing height limits. “There is not one sector of the community, including the business sector, that

wants to see Nelson Bay lose its charm and become the Gold Coast,” Ms Washington said. “If the rescission motion isn’t supported, it’s open slather for developers in Nelson Bay. What a terrible legacy we will be left with by those who purport to represent the community.” Cr Nell had moved to defer a decision until this report was complete, however Mayor Bruce Mackenzie’s voting bloc approved the development without waiting to hear the community’s view. A rescission motion on this decision will be heard at the next Council meeting on 9 May.

Rev Kesh said. Seeing the success of previous events including “Men & Motors”, “Blokes & Bikes” and “Men & Meat” has encouraged the Reverend to continually think outside of the box. June 17 will see All Saints Anna Bay hold another event titled, “Guys & Guitars”. “The idea is to get guys together to share their guitars

with each other and show each other their skills ,” Kesh said. With more than 30 guitars on display, the afternoon will see men jamming together as well as enjoying each other’s company over lunch. The afternoon begins at 1pm and concludes at 4pm. You can contact All Saints Nelson Bay for more information on 49811 839.

Charges after drugs found

A MAN will face court today charged with drug offences in Nelson Bay. Officers from Port Stephens Local Area Command were patrolling Lagoons Circuit, Nelson Bay, about 11.45pm on Saturday 29 April 2017, when they spoke to a man standing beside a car. Police allegedly located a large plastic resealable bag with a white crystal substance, believed to be

‘ICE’, a short distance from the vehicle. The items were seized and will undergo forensic examination. A 46-year-old man was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station and charged with supply prohibited drug and breach of bail. He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Sunday 30 April.

ANGEL Gowns Mid North Coast and Angel Gowns Hunter Central Coast Inc. are two groups of volunteers who, by their skill, love and compassion, hope to touch the hearts of families who suffer the tragic loss of a baby through miscarriage, illness, prematurity or stillbirth. The groups are run solely by volunteers who donate their time and skill to the community. They take bridal gowns that are filled with love from a couple’s wedding day and gently wash, deconstruct, and sew these gowns into stunning Angel Gowns, which are then gifted to families free of charge. The groups also make wraps for very early miscarriage loss, and four sizes of angel gowns for babies from 20 weeks to term plus. In Australia alone six babies a day are stillborn, and six families suffer the tragic loss of their child. The Angel Gowns Mid North Coast group recently received over 70 bridal gowns from the Port Stephens area

GREYHOUNDS have featured in the media in the past year due to government racing restrictions, and then political back flipping, resulting in the spotlight being put on this breed. April was Greyhound Adoption Month and rescue organisations have been promoting the benefits of adopting or fostering this breed. Medowie residents are not unfamiliar with greyhounds, with many owners of racers and retired racers residing in the community. Ms Mel Taylor combines her love of cats with owning her gorgeous hound, Buddy. She is also the coordinator of Cat Rescue Newcastle and shows that, contrary to popular misconceptions, greyhounds can live peacefully with their feline friends. Ms Taylor told News Of The Area, “Buddy fitted straight into family life with

myself, young kids and cats.” “I run Cat Rescue Newcastle, so we always have cats/kittens around, Buddy has helped with the rehabilitation and introductions of hundreds of cats and kittens over the years.” “These cats can go to their new homes without a worry of dogs.” Of the decision to adopt a greyhound six years ago, Ms Taylor said, “I saw an increasing need for Greyhounds to be adopted.” “I researched the breed and found them to be very suitable for my family.” “They are quite different to what people think and unfortunately have not had a fair go.” “Greyhounds are quite lazy and would rather laze around with a family.” “They have acquired the suitable nicknames of ‘lounge lizards’ or ‘couch potatoes’.” “They do not need excess exercise, and are not vicious beasts as people think due to muzzling laws.”

“Jeannie has such an extensive knowledge of the area that we all walked away not just with a sense of wonderment but also feeling like we learnt something,” she said. Man arrested following pursuit

POLICE have arrested a man after a pursuit in the Port Stephens area. About 6.30pm Saturday 29 April 2017, police were patrolling Nelson Bay Road, Williamtown, when they sighted a man wanted on warrants in a Ford Falcon. After losing sight of the vehicle for a short time, police sighted the vehicle again on Cabbage Tree Road, Tomago, and

Sang repertoire. The Historical Society’s member, Ms Moira Saunderson contributed by relating her experiences in researching local history. Two local History teachers, Mr Joel Ross and

Ms Melanie Innes, who is also a PhD history education candidate at the University of Newcastle; and yours truly; fulfilled the theme of Having A Voice by reading letters by World War I soldiers from the local area. Of the experience, Ms Innes told News Of The Area, “Although I am not a stranger to public speaking, I really felt a sense of community, embracing our shared history.” “I feel that events such as these are increasingly important, as our lives become busy and hectic, people in our community are at risk of losing the connection to local history.” With the event being held on the weekend before ANZAC Day, Ms Innes added, “I think hearing these personal histories from figures in our local area brings a greater significance to the far-reaching impact of WWI.” President Ken Barlow said, “It is Society members that provide events and services such as these.” “To continue our work the society seeks new members and practical support for projects.”

initiated a police pursuit. The pursuit travelled along the Pacific Highway and New England Highway, before being terminated on John Renshaw Drive, Beresfield due to dangerous driving. The vehicle was later located abandoned on Queens Wharf Road, Morpeth. A search of the surrounding area was conducted with assistance from the Dog Unit, along with officers from Central Hunter and Port Stephens Local Area

Commands. A 27-year-old man was arrested after being located nearby in a rural farm shed. He was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station, before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment to a laceration to his arm. The man remains under police guard at hospital. Charges are expected to be laid at a later date.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,

My son is obsessed with becoming the next School Captain at the local primary school. The votes don’t happen until the end of the year, but he is already fine-tuning his speech, walking up and down the corridor, reciting the central points. I know he won’t be able to deliver on many of the promises, which become more outlandish each week. How do I tone him down? Mr PT, Mallabula Dear Mr PT, You know, if there’s one thing I have learnt about politics in the past year, it’s that anything is possible. Even if your son doesn’t seem like School Captain material, even if he’s only participated in a reality-style pantomime and not once shown an interest in the finer machinations of the school, the role could end up his. I wouldn’t be too worried about the distortion of facts in his speech. Elections are often won, or lost, on spin or lack thereof. Say, for example, he is promising lemonade in the bubblers, or free-dress every Friday. These are fairly innocent undertakings sprouted by many before him. But if he is perhaps thinking about getting rid of Sick Bay, because it is draining school funds, or if he is considering building a border wall between the infants and primary sections, you could be encouraging a catastrophic trajectory. And if, when the girl before him in the speeches makes a good point and he says “lock her up, she’s been using school computers to send personal emails” there is definitely a concerning pattern. If he asks to see the last School Captain’s birth certificate (because he believes his predecessor was born in Kenya and therefore ineligible) you need to engage professional help. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

General Manager, Wayne Wallis, says the bumper lineup is a result of Council’s investment in sponsorship of events and sporting infrastructure. “Events provide valuable social and economic benefits to the greater Port Stephens community particularly during off-peak times when tourism numbers start to decline,” Mr Wallis said. “When you combine our natural assets, accommodation options, extensive food and beverage choices and world class sporting all within two and a

half hours of Sydney, you get something every sporting team wants – a serious competitive advantage. “It’s also an opportunity for us to showcase our beautiful home to a national and international audience,” he said. The line-up includes: • Guns and Hoses Charity Surfing Competition, where 150 Police, Ambulance and Fire Rescue personnel will compete at One Mile Beach (9-10 May) • 2017 NSW Country Junior Rugby Championships, which will bring over 200 competitors to the Tomaree Peninsula (13-14 May) • Port Stephens Triath-

lon, which will welcome 1500 competitors, many from outside the local area (20 May) • Disability Sports Australia’s Multi-bowl Championships, a 6-day tournament at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club (21-26 May) • Port to Port MTB, a unique race bringing competitors from across the Hunter region and further afield to ride from Port Stephens to Newcastle (25 May). In addition to the many sporting competitions, a number of popular cultural events will take place in May, including the Karuah Lost Highway Bluegrass Music Festival and the King Street Heritage Festival.

New Marine-themed Playground A NEW marine-themed playground unit has been installed at Corlette Community Hall, complete with a soft fall area. Two years ago Port Stephens Council officer Di Mahanga reported that the previous play equipment was outdated and did not comply with today’s standards. Thanks to Murray Smith, Sarah Rees and Jason Lantry from Port Stephens Council, the $70,000 project was constructed. “There was very little disruption to our clients and tenants as the concreting and play equipment installation were carried out in stages,” Secretary/ Treasurer Brian Watson-Will said. The uneven pavers in the yard and path have been replaced with smooth concrete eliminating trip hazards, sand from green ant nests and also updating and replacing the sewer inspection cover. This component of $10,000 will be paid for out of the Hall’s funds. “Our Hall Committee signed-off on a request for three quotes at the February AGM,” Mr Watson-Will said. “We are to fund this cover to protect the investment and assist in keeping it clean.” “Port Stephens Council’s vision for our community is to provide such facilities to enable community groups . . . to utilise these safe facilities at affordable prices,” he said.

Common myths about koalas By Mandy ELLIS

WILD Koala Day is here and with record growth in international tourism, all Australians should know koala facts from fiction. We are calling on Australians to protect koalas in the wild and Port Stephens Koalas (PSK) has provided some facts below to assist in that important endeavour. Although koalas often look docile, they are not, of course, inebriated by their diet of eucalyptus leaves. Koalas rest because they are mostly nocturnal and have a low nutrient diet. Koalas do not eat only one type of gum-tree, although they do have personal

favourites. Surprisingly, koalas can run at up to 32km/h and leap up a tree in two metre bounds. Healthy, wild koalas are not placid and will usually defend themselves if a human tries to touch them. Scientific studies have shown koalas become stressed when humans approach within five metres. As cute and cuddly as they appear, wild koalas do not love to be cuddled. Koala numbers around Australia are declining in every state except South Australia. There are five to six well-publicised populations of koalas in Victoria and

South Australia that are over populated, but they are the exception, not the rule. Koalas are not overpopulated, but they are in danger of extinction due to habitat loss, stress, disease, car hits, bushfires and dog attacks. Julie Jennings from Port Stephens Koalas told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens Koalas aims to provide world best practice standards of care to sick, injured and orphaned koalas ensuring they receive the best opportunity to be returned to the wild, while supporting research and collaboration to preserve their habitat.” If you would like to learn about wild koalas and Wild

Men’s Shed help

Even more newsstands for News Of The Area By Daniel SAHYOUN MEN’S Shed members have been busy, with another batch of News Of The Area newsstands completed and ready to hit the streets. The men have now made more than 80 of the modern, high-quality stands, to keep up with the growing circulation of the three News Of The Area papers. Shed Member for the Bulahdelah Shed, John Renfrew, said they have “certainly enjoyed making them”. “We gained a lot of experience, especially with a number of new tools that we used to build them,” he said. “We lost sleep over it a few times, but the main thing about it is that we were up here doing it together.” And a team effort it was, with all shed members having “a hand in each component of the stands”. Max Burrows and John Renfrew lead the construction

and Peter Millen and Barry Holm were the chief painters. Neville Wing and Max took on the role of mentors, and all other members pitched in to help with each stage. The men constructed their first newsstand more than 18 months ago, and have since modified the original design many times. John said the project allowed them to work together in a supportive and social environment. “It has been a good thing to work on, we really did enjoy it, and it is also good to be able to support men’s health in this way,” he said. With the latest set of newsstands completed, John said their attention would now be focused on other activities. “We’ll still be working on beehives, and we will work on other projects to help the community,” he said. “We also have card nights twice a week, it’s a small shed, but we do get a big roll-up.” The Men’s Shed is a registered health promotion charity and supports programs to improve men’s health and wellbeing.

Maggie’s High Tea By Rachael VAUGHAN

q Maggie and her Mum, Amanda. Treasured memories given to the family by Heartfelt.

q Koalas look cute and cuddly, but can become stressed if approached by humans.

A SPECIAL event has been organised in memory of one very special baby. A high tea will be held on the 8 October at the Novotel hotel in Newcastle in honour of baby Maggie Gill. This high tea will raise awareness for infant and pregnancy loss and much needed funds for Heartfelt, an organisation of volunteer professional photographers who come to take photos of stillborn or terminally sick children. This important event has been organised by Amanda Gill, in honour of

her angel baby Maggie. Maggie, born a picture of perfection, may not have taken a breath on this earth, but she continues to make a difference in the lives of the people who love her. Her passing will never be in vain, as those around her use her memory to raise funds, awareness and support for families who so desperately need it. Heartfelt offers an invaluable service to grieving families, giving them a gift that that does not have a price. Irreplaceable photographic memories of a child that will never be forgotten, delivered

to families in a caring, compassionate and heartfelt manner. Amanda told News Of The Area, “ I was blessed to have a heartfelt photographer take photos of my beautiful angel Maggie, and they are a real treasure.” “This wonderful service is completely free to families, as are the prints and photos on USB.” “We hope to make this year’s event in honour of Maggie a massive success so we can make sure this service continues to be available to families like ours,” she said. Tickets are $50 each and can be bought individually, or gather your girlfriends

and organise a table of 8-10. Tickets can be purchased via the Facebook event at ‘Maggie’s Heartfelt High Tea’ or from Amanda at ajgill083@gmail.com. The organisers of this wonderful event are also looking for generous local businesses willing to donate a prize for the event, so that raffles and auctions can be held throughout the day to raise even more funds. Please contact Amanda if you are able to be a part of this request. Amanda also wishes to thank her mother, Genelle Ireland, and sisters Kellie Reddon and Belinda Gallacher for their help with this very special event.

The Bombers represent the Williamtown RAAF Base, the Canons represent Fort Scratchley, the Miners represent the rich mining heritage of the Hunter and the Marauders are a loose connection to the boating lifestyle of Lake Macquarie and coastal areas of the Hunter.” HGL games are played on Sundays at 12pm and 2pm, with training each Wednesday at 6.30pm, at Walters Park in Speers Point. Handsome Heath needs a home

OUR News Of The Area rescue pet of the week comes to us this week from Dog Rescue Newcastle. Let us introduce you to the very handsome Heath. Heath is a four-year-old Border Collie Cross. When Heath came into care he was very timid around people, but good with other dogs. He is currently in foster care with two other dogs and gets along well with them. He is coming out of his shell a little more each day, but is still a little timid when meeting new people and other dogs for the first time. Heath is looking for a family who will be at home with him to give him the reassurance he needs. Heath would love for his furever family to continue his training as he is a very smart dog. Ashleigh Foyster from Dog Rescue Newcastle told News Of The Area, “Heath is such a lovely dog, he appears to be house trained when his carers bring him inside, but he prefers the security of his kennel at the moment.” “He loves attention and nothing better than a good scratch.” “Heath is a very playful dog and loves to toss his toys

Heath is currently with his carers in Cameron Park, NSW (Newcastle area). Heath’s adoption fee is $400 and he is desexed, vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms, microchipped, and lifetime registered.
